Abstract:A thorough literature survey was made to obtain all useful information relating to helium-3. Based on this fundamental work, the Gibbons' equation of state for He-3 in the gaseous region from 4K to 20K at pressures 0.1 MPa to 10MPa was tested and refitted, and a modified form was presented.

Abstract:An equation of state for 3He using the Helmholtz potential function has been developed. The lower limit of the equation of 0.01 K is safely above the superfluid transition at 0.0026 K. The upper limit of 60 K is approximately the upper limit of available 3He property measurements. The new state equation form is based on Debye function which goes smoothly to zero in the limit of zero temperature and reduces to the ideal gas in the limit of zero density and/or very high temperature. The equation combines (a) necessary temperature-independent compressibility terms at the lowest temperatures, (b) terms describing the linear specific heat of a Fermi fluid below 1 K, (c) terms describing the phonon excitations which begin above about 1 K, and (d) terms which attempt to fit the conventional critical point thermodynamics at 3.3157 K and 114 604 Pa. State properties, e.g., p-V-T relations, specific heats, thermal expansion, sound velocity, etc., are determined from the Helmholtz energy by standard thermodynamics. Transport properties, e.g., thermal conductivity and viscosity, are not obtained in this work.

Abstract:An equation of state for normal liquid 3He has been constructed in the form of Helmholtz free energy as a function of independent parameters—temperature, and density. The equation was fitted simultaneously to the collected experimental p-ρ-T, specific heat, sound velocity, isobaric expansion coefficient and isothermal compressibility coefficient from the world’s literature to accuracies comparable with reasonable experimental errors in the measured quantities. Extensive comparisons between the equation of state and experimental data have been made by a set of deviation plots. The state equation is valid in the region for temperatures from 0.1 K to T c = 3.3157 K, and for pressures from vapor pressures to melting pressures.

Abstract:A saturation vapor pressure equation, p(T), is an essential component in the 3He state equation currently under development. The state equation is valid over the range 0.01–20K with pressures from 0 to the melting pressure or 15MPa. The vapor pressure equation consequently must be valid from 0.01K to the critical temperature. This paper surveys available 3He critical temperature and pressure measurements, leading to new recommended critical values of 3.3157K and 114603.91Pa. The ITS-90 temperature scale is defined by the 3He vapor pressure from 0.65 to 3.2K. A new vapor pressure equation is developed for the interval from the upper end of the T90 scale to this newly defined critical point, employing a mathematical form in which the second derivative d2p/dT2 diverges in agreement with scaling laws at the critical point. Below 0.65K, an empirical vapor pressure expression is adopted, consistent with a theoretical expression valid in the limit T→0. These two new components are fitted to be piecewise continuous with the EPT-76 p(T) scale rather than the ITS-90 T(p) scale between 0.65 and 3.2K. Probable deviations between this vapor pressure scale and PLTS-2000 melting pressure–temperature scale are recognized, but not reconciled.

Abstract:At low temperatures the properties of the isotope He-3 differ considerably from those of He-4 because of quantum effects. Based on the work of Gibbons, the thermodynamic properties can be calculated with a modified Strobridge equation between 4K and 20K, while between 20K and 100K a correlation based on the modified quantum version of the principle of corresponding states instead. In this correlation the reduced de Broglie wavelength lambda(*) is introduced as the third parameter besides the reduced temperature and volume. Hereby, a program is built to compute the properties of He-3 between I K and 100K, including the PVT properties, entropy, enthalpy, internal energy, thermal conductivity and viscosity. The results agree with the technical report AFML-TR-67-175 of Air Products and Chemical Inc.

A practical density equation for saturated vapor of helium-3 from 0.01 K to the critical point

Abstract:Based on the ideal gas state equation and the saturated vapor pressure equation of helium-3, a saturated vapor density equation is proposed, which can be applied for calculating the saturated vapor density of helium-3 from 0.01K to the critical temperature. Above 1.4K, the average deviation between the results by this equation and experimental data is about 0.66% and the maximum is 2%. Below 1.4K, the results of this work show a comfortable agreement with those by virial state equation (the deviations are generally within 0.1%). Based on this new vapor density equation, the compressibility factor of saturated vapor is determined and the vaporization heat is calculated.

Abstract:Based on the Debye state equation and the phase equilibrium equations of helium-3,a computer program for calculating the thermodynamic properties of helium-3 has been developed.Based on a series of calculations,the p-h and T-s graphs of helium-3 have been plotted in the range of temperature from 0.2 K to 300 K and pressure from 0.000 1MPa to 30 MPa.Compared with the p-h and T-s graphs(0.2 K to 20 K) plotted based on the experimental data before,the new graphs are based on the thermodynamic theoretical calculation and provide a broader temperature scope of application.The overall random errors of these two graphs are within 2%.

Abstract:The equation of state, self-diffusion, and viscosity coefficients of helium have been investigated by quantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations in the warm dense matter regime. Our simulations are validated through the comparison with the reliable experimental data. The calculated principal and reshock Hugoniots of liquid helium are in good agreement with the gas-gun data. On this basis, we revisit the issue for helium, i.e., the possibility of the instabilities predicted by chemical models at around 2000 GPa and 10 g/cm(3) along the pressure isotherms of 6309, 15 849, and 31 623 K. Our calculations show no indications of instability in this pressure-temperature region, which reconfirm the predictions of previous QMD simulations. The self-diffusion and viscosity coefficients of warm dense helium have been systematically investigated by the QMD simulations. We carefully test the finite-size effects and convergences of statistics, and obtain numerically converged self-diffusion and viscosity coefficients by using the Kubo-Green formulas. The present results have been used to evaluate the existing one component plasma models. Finally, the validation of the Stokes-Einstein relationship for helium in the warm dense regime is discussed. The Computer Program For Thermodynamic Properties Of Helium-3

Abstract:A self-built computer program for the properties of He-3 between the temperature 1K and 100 K, the pressure up to 10 MPa is introduced. Arbitrarily selecting two property parameters among pressure, temperature, specific volume (or density), entropy, enthalpy and internal energy as the input variables, the rest, the thermal conductivity and viscosity could be calculated. The comprehensive unit system of the input and output parameters, the continuity of calculating and the high accuracy with the maximum error within 5% characterized this program as a feasible one.

Abstract:Based on the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, the Virial equation and the newest phase equilibrium equations of helium-3,two important properties on the phase equilibrium curves,that is,the vaporization heat and the melting heat have been calculated.The temperature ranges are 0 K~3.315 7 K for vaporization heat and 0 K~35 K for melting heat.The accuracy of these results can satisfy the application requirements.

Abstract:On the basis of the equation of state and the phase equilibrium equations of helium-3 (3He), a computer program for calculating the thermodynamic properties of 3He has been created. With this program, many iso-property tables were prepared for generating p–h and T–s diagrams of 3He over the range of temperature from 0.2 K to 300 K and pressures up to 300 MPa. Compared with the previous diagrams plotted with interpolated experimental data sets, the new ones are more thermodynamically consistent and cover a broader temperature and pressure range. The estimated overall random errors of the diagrams are within 2 %.

Abstract:3He,as a special substance,is now having more and more applications in the field of cryogenic engineering,fundamental physics and space technology,etc.These applications need reliable thermodynamic data of 3He.However,there are not any state equations in wide range for 3He so far.In addition,its thermodynamic data are extremely shortage,which brings inconvenience for researchers on 3He.On the base of collecting and picking up different kinds of data of 3He,as well as writing down computer programs,this paper checks the feasibility of V-T relationship using five normal state equations from 4K ～100K,and compares the calculational data with the experimental data,which make valuable reference for the research of the state equation of 3He.

Study of Equation of State of the Dense Fluid He+H_2 Mixtures

Abstract:The mixing rule and the variational perturbation theory together with van der Waals one- fluid model have been used to study the equation of state of the dense fluid He+H 2 mixtures with different H 2∶He compositions in this work.The first-order quantum correction is included.To test the model and computational code,the isotherm of the fluid He+H 2 mixtures at 300 K is calculated by using the existing α-exp-6 optimization potential parameters.The calculated isotherm for the fluid He+H 2 mixtures is in agreement with the experimental data and molecular dynamics simulations.Then the equation of state of the fluid He+H 2 mixtures with different He∶H 2 (He∶H 2=1∶1,1∶3,3∶1) compositions have been further investigated in the pressure range 0～60 GPa and temperature in the range 50～7000 K.Comparisons of the present results with Monte-Carlo simulations indicate that the quantum corrections for the calculation of the thermodynamic properties become significant at lower temperatures.

Abstract:A density equation for saturated vapor and liquid 3He is presented based on 205 experimental measurements for temperatures greater than 0.2 K collected after a careful survey of the literature. The average deviation of the densities predicted by the equation against the experimental values is 0.39%. There are only 16 points with deviations larger than 1%. This equation is valid for both liquid and vapor densities of 3He up to the critical temperature of 3.3157 K. The form of the equation satisfies known scaling laws approaching the critical point, with β=0.3653. In the low-density limit, the vapor curve of our equation matches smoothly to the published virial equation density at a temperature of 1.62 K and at the saturation pressure. The rectilinear density deviates from the critical density by less than 0.28% down to 0.48 K.

Abstract:Nonsegmented equations for melting pressure and density at temperatures from 0.001 K to 30 K have been developed to fit the reference data. The maximum and average deviations between the melting pressure equation and the totaling 298 reference data are 2.17% and 0.218%, respectively. For the density equations, the average deviations are 0.236% for the liquid side and 0.218% for the solid side. Both the melting pressure curve and melting density curves predicted by the submitted equations approach their minimums at about 0.315 K.

Abstract:Quantum molecular dynamics simulations for self-diffusion, mutual-diffusion, and viscosities of hydrogen-helium (H-He) mixtures are investigated to benchmark the standard theoretical models in the warm dense matter regime. We carefully examine the differences in velocity autocorrelation functions (VACFs) between the mixtures and pure hydrogen or helium. The VACFs for the mixtures exhibit oscillatory features, which however are absent for pure species. At low temperatures, the VACFs of H in H-He mixtures have a negative correlation region, which results in an obviously smaller self-diffusion of H in H-He mixtures compared to that in a pure H system. The calculated self-diffusion coefficients of H and He in H-He mixtures show much different behaviors with the variation of the composition of He (XHe): the self-diffusion coefficients of He increase monotonously with increasing XHe, whereas the self-diffusion coefficients of H generally decrease with the increase in XHe. The viscosities are smaller for the H-He mixtures with a more helium content. These diffusion and viscosity coefficients are used as a benchmark to check some analytical models based on the one component plasma or the Yukawa one component plasma.
