Abstract:The vertical variations of corrosive conditions, including atmospheric, splash, tidal, and submerged zones, are generally oversimplified in the literature, which obscures the understanding of time-dependent fluctuations in non-uniform corrosion of reinforced concrete structures under marine environments. Given the challenges associated with conducting long-term experiments, this paper developed a coupled model of corrosion electrochemical kinetics and chloride transport. Electrochemical parameters were validated against experimental results to ensure consistency with engineering practices. The findings reveal significant non-uniform variations, typically decreasing by a factor of 0.1 in the following sequence: Splash and Tidal zones > Atmospheric zone > Submerged zone. The significantly high macro-cell current densities at interfaces accelerate the iron dissolution rate of reinforcing bars, leading to a sudden decrease in cross-sectional area and an elevated probability of failure. Though reducing electrolytic conductivity and the cathodic-to-anodic area ratio can notably decrease macro-cell current density in tidal and splash zones, it is not as effective at the interfaces. However, the presence of stirrups can mitigate or exacerbate corrosion of steel reinforcement, with mechanisms varying across different zones and positions. These observations enhance the understanding of time-dependent non-uniform corrosion in marine environments and provide valuable guidance for mitigating corrosion damage in engineering applications.
