Abstract:The ratio error caused by the unstable bridge arm resistors will occur when a traditional resistance Kelvin bridge is operated for actual measurement. Usually in DC condition it can be eliminated by changing the physical position of the measured resistor and the standard one, however in AC condition this exchange will lead to a new ratio uncertainty because of the position variation of the lead wires between the two resistors and the bridge. To solve this problem a new method named electrical exchanging is presented for the 1:1 comparison between two same nominal value resistors. All of the components of Kelvin bridge are integrated into a central plate by the connecting leads. With reasonable wiring the electrical position exchanging between the measured resistor and the standard one can be realized by exchanging the location of the four short links. At the same time a resistance Kelvin bridge operated in the frequency range from DC to 10 kHz is developed for the comparative measurement between two Tinsley 5685 AC standard resistors. The experimental results and theoretical analysis show that electrical exchanging could improve the measurement accuracy of the bridge in AC/DC conditions.

Abstract:In remote measurement systems, the lead wire resistance of the resistance sensor will produce a large measurement error. In order to ensure the accuracy of remote measurement, a novel lead-wire-resistance compensation technique is proposed, which is suitable for a two-wire resistance temperature detector. By connecting a zener diode in parallel with the resistance temperature detector (RTD) and an interface circuit specially designed for it, the lead-wire-resistance value can be accurately measured by virtue of the constant voltage characteristic of the zener diode when reverse breakdown occurs, and compensation can thereby be made when calculating the resistance of RTD. Through simulation verification and practical circuit testing, when the sensor resistance is in 848-2120 Omega scope and the lead wire resistance is less than 50 Omega, the proposed technology can ensure the measuring error of the sensor resistance within +/- 1 Omega and the temperature measurement error within +/- 0.3 degrees C for RTDs performing 1000 Omega at 0 degrees C. Therefore, this method is able to accurately compensate the measurement error caused by the lead wire resistance in two-wire RTDsand is suitable for most applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a bridged contactless measurement technique that can measure the resonant frequency and quality factor of a fully-integrated powered off voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). Unlike the use of the conventional two-coil inductive link, the proposed technique uses an additional inductor to bridge the coupling between the LC tank and the external inductor serving measurement purposes. This makes it possible to examine the on-chip high frequency oscillator with an off-chip inductor at Printed Circuit Board (PCB) level. As an example, a K-band VCO as well as the proposed test structure have been designed and simulated using 0.13 μm CMOS technology. The quality factor and operating frequency of the oscillator are measured using the proposed contactless technique through extraction from the frequency response of a bridged inductive link. The efficiency of the method has been validated by full wave electromagnetic simulation. As a reference, the characterization of the oscillator is also obtained using the Cadence Spectre RF and Mentor Graphic's Calibre PEX commercial Electronic Design Automation (EDA) software. The results of these two solutions agree considerably well, which supports the feasibility and potentials of using this technique for contactless measurements.

Abstract:Two electronic circuits are designed for measuring liquid conductivity under different conditions.The details of the circuits are presented,the features of the two circuits are analyzed.The liquid conductivity measurement circuit based on phase-locking amplification principle is suitable for low speed measurement with high resolution.The measurement circuit based on bi-directional pulse current technique can work at high speed with good accuracy.The possible improvements of the two proposed liquid conductivity measurement circuits are discussed.

Abstract:For the accurate measurement and calibration of the AC standard resistors in the resistance range from 1 Ω to(10 kΩ),a new type of Kelvin bridge operating at the frequency range from DC to 100 kHz is designed,and a measuring method of substitution is developed.The experimental results of 100 Ω and 1 kΩ standard resistor prove that this bridge takes some advantages,such as high accuracy,simplicity of operating and wide working frequency range,which has already met the specification requirements of the subject of The National AC Resistance Standard.

Abstract:The article designs a new type of bridge circuit with a controlled source—when the resistance on the bridge arm of the controlled source bridge circuit meets the bridge balance condition, and the bridge branch contains only one Current-Controlled Current Source (CCCS), a Voltage-Controlled Current Source (VCCS), a Current-Controlled Voltage Source (CCVS), or a Voltage-Controlled Voltage Source (VCVS), the circuit is called a controlled bridge circuit, which has the characteristics of bridge balance. Due to the relationship between the controlled source and the bridge arm, the sensitivity of the components on the bridge is higher mathematically and logically. When applied to measurement, engineering, automatic control, and other fields, the controlled bridge circuit has higher control ac-curacy. Mathematical derivation and simulation results prove the correctness of the bridge balance conclusion and the special properties of this bridge when applied to the measurement field.

Abstract:Comparing with semiconductor material, thin film samples have smaller resistivity and more fragile texture. Existing four probe measurement equipment could not fulfill the measurement requirements of thin film resistivity. Dual-configuration four-probe method is based on thin layer principle, ignores the influence of scale factor and more suitable for thin film samples, but it requires circuit switching in the measurement process and complex calculation in data processing. Visual instrument technique integrates the measurement device and computer, and the measurement process and data processing are accomplished under program control. In this paper a thin film resistivity measurement system is introduced. The stability of the system is proved by test results and the influences of variable environment factors on measurement results are also described.

Abstract:The growing need for ubiquitous, ultra-low-power sensors has driven continuous advancement in low-power performance and energy efficiency for read-out circuits, with broad applications in environmental sensing of temperature/humidity [1,2] and barometric pressure [3]. In these sensor architectures, a Wheatstone bridge circuit provides balanced readout. While this approach is efficient for large sensor resistance $(5k \Omega - 500k \Omega)$, measuring small resistance $(\lt 1k \Omega)$ with low power consumption presents a fundamental challenge that is increasingly necessary for a growing class of sensors for strain [4] and force [5] in wearable devices and robotics.

Abstract:Traditional methods of inductance measurement encounter difficulties when they deal with inductors working in both high frequency and high current.A novel method of inductance measurement based on half-bridge circuit is proposed, which can meet the requirement on megnetizing current,which include ac component,dc component and variable frequen- cy.In addition,the dynamic magnetization process of the inductor core can also be taken into consideration.Therefore,a much more accurate inductance result can be achieved.

Abstract:A Wheatstone bridge and the following amplifier are widely used for measuring resistance. However, for the measurement of small resistance change, the gain of the amplifier must be very high, which can reduce measurement range and introduce obvious baseline drift into the measured signal inevitably. In this study, a self-balancing Wheatstone bridge is designed based on a digitally controlled potentiometer (DCP). During the initial balance of the Wheatstone bridge, the DCP is adjusted until the output of the bridge is close to 0 V. When the bridge works for the measurement of dynamic resistance, the DCP is readjusted to compensate the remarkable change in the resistance, and the output of the amplifier is, thus, limited in the input voltage range of the analog-to-digital converter (ADC). At the same time, the signal sampled by the ADC is processed by the least-squares fitting to extend the measurement range. In addition, an attention-based gated recurrent unit is proposed to remove the drift in the signal. The effectiveness, stability, and accuracy of the proposed method have been demonstrated through multiple force measurement experiments on the instrument of a robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery system.

Abstract:The ultrasonic piezoelectric transducers have been widely applied in industrial fields, and they should be well matched to ensure its power transfer efficiency or measure accuracy. However, the electric characteristics of the transducers vary greatly with temperature, which will cause the deficiency of static matching. The existing tuning method or dynamic matching method may compensate for the variations, but they both have some limitations in applications. In this paper, a method based on the Wien bridge oscillation circuit is proposed to dynamically measure the equivalent static capacitor of ultrasonic piezoelectric transducer. It can overcome the limitations facing the conventional dynamic matching and help to realize self-adjusting of the matching inductors. This method is adaptable for a variety of ultrasonic instruments and devices, especially for the ultrasonic flow meters.

Abstract:To ensure the safe navigation of electric ships, it is especially important to detect the insulation status between the ship’s high-voltage system and the ship’s hull in real-time. In this article, a real-time insulation resistance (IR) detection method based on the double-arm unbalanced bridge method was proposed for the problem that the IR calculation results of electric ships have large errors. The detection principle was described, and an experimental test platform was built. The influence law of each branch resistance and voltage on the IR measurement error in this circuit was studied to provide a reference for the parameter selection of the double-arm unbalanced bridge, and the effect of temperature on the measurement results was also considered. Besides, the extended Kalman filtering (EKF) algorithm was used to reduce the influence of voltage fluctuation on the insulation detection error. The results show that the insulation testing method could accurately measure the IR, the insulation testing error was less than 2.4%, and the error was about 0.18% after processing with the EKF algorithm. This proves that this article improves the measurement accuracy of IR from three aspects: circuit design of insulation testing, bridge parameter selection, and filtering algorithm.

Abstract:In the DC system of electric ships, insulation drops and grounding will pose a threat to stable ship operation and personal safety. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the insulation status of the battery pack between high voltage and ground in real time. However, traditional measurement methods have problems such as low accuracy, long measurement time, and poor reliability. In this paper, an insulation detection method based on an unbalanced bridge was proposed and the principle of insulation resistance detection was analyzed. The influence of different resistance values of insulation detection circuits on the measurement error of insulation resistance was studied by simulation analysis and experimental tests to obtain the optimal set of bridge resistance matching designs. Digital filter and Kalman filter were used to filter out noise in the voltage signal. The results show that measurement error of insulation resistance after optimization was less than 3% and drops to approximately 0.46% after processing by the Kalman filter algorithm, which proves that the insulation detection method designed in this paper has high measurement accuracy.

Abstract:We have built and demonstrated a digital four-arm bridge for the comparison of resistance with capacitance. The digital four-arm bridge mimics the classical quad bridge in the digital domain with three balances: the source balance, the detector balance, as well as the main balance. Due to correlation, the required precision of the source voltages is only of the order of the square root of the ultimate bridge precision. For the comparison of a 100 kΩ resistor with a 1 nF capacitor near 1592 Hz, the combined standard uncertainty (k = 1) is 5×10 -9 .

Abstract:Transducer bridge circuits include arrangements such as individual bridge,half bridge full bridge and etc. The relationship between the output voltage and the variation of the transducer resistance is nonlinear for individual bridge and non-differential half bridge circuits. Nonlinearity correcting circuits which apply operational amplifiers are discussed. These correcting circuits can eliminate nonlinear errors thoroughly and increase sensitivity of the bridge. They own simple structures and can be realized easily. It is helpful for the teaching of Measurement and Control Circuit course.

Abstract:Generally, a digital generator and a lock-in amplifier are used as the signal source and the detector for the precise AC resistance comparison bridge of wide frequency range. The measurement results indicate that the obvious disturbance may occur in such a system, which makes the balancing of the bridge difficult. Sometime, the detector cannot be locked in some frequency range. Analyses and theoretic computation show that the problem is from the parasitic coupling between instruments and the ground and the disturbance of the electromagnetic field in space. To solve these problems, an optical isolator, a sine wave generator with very small parasitic capacitance to ground, a metal shielding box and other measures were applied. The uncertainty of the measurement results with the bridge is better than 10(-5) in the frequency range from 40 Hz to 100 kHz.

Abstract:The four-terminal-pair impedance bridge using pulse-driven Josephson voltage standards at PTB has been fully automated. The same bridge configuration was employed to determine R:R and C:C ratios over the frequency range between 53 Hz to 50 kHz. Only minor changes are needed to cover this large frequency range: amplifiers to increase the sensitivities of the current detections for low frequencies and signal generators with higher resolutions at high frequencies to reach 50 kHz. Furthermore, the bridge can be operated for quadrature R:(1/ωC) measurements. The combined standard uncertainties (k = 1) for the new bridge were evaluated for all operating frequencies. They reach 2 nF/F and 4 nΩ/Ω at 1233.15 Hz. At this frequency, the 10 nF:10 nF ratio matched the ratio of PTB's bridge employing inductive voltage dividers within 1 nF/F ± 3 nF/F (k = 1). Over 45 days, the 10 nF:10 nF ratio deviated less than -2 nF/F ± 3 nF/F (k = 1). The 12.9 kΩ:10 kΩ ratio at 53 Hz differed -2 nΩ/Ω ± 5 nΩ/Ω (k = 1) from the DC ratio measured by the PTB's cryogenic current comparator bridge. Using a 12.9 kΩ resistance standard and a graphene AC quantum Hall resistance, the 10 nF:10 nF ratios derived from quadrature measurements agreed with the PTB's inductive voltage divider bridge better than 9 nF/F ± 13 nF/F (k = 1).

Abstract:The electric impedance of electrolyte solutions have been measured by using alternating Current impedance method.The results showed that the testing frequency at 1-4kHz adopted in regular alternating current bridge method could be used to measure the resistance of electrolyte solutions,and the possible influence of electrical inductance in higher frequency could be avoided effectively.
