Abstract:Cerium dioxide (CeO2) nanocrystalline thin films were grown on glass substrates by pulsed-spray evaporation chemical vapor deposition (PSE-CVD) at temperatures of 350-500 degrees C. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that films grown by this process crystallize in the cubic structure, with a preferred (200) orientation when grown above 450 degrees C. The crystallite size was observed to increase from 7.5 nm to 35 nm with increased deposition temperature. The growth activation energy changes from 50.2 kJ/mol in the range of 350-450 degrees C to 22.9 kJ/mol at 450-550 degrees C, indicating the change of the rate-limiting step from surface kinetics control to diffusion control. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows uniform surface morphology for films prepared at the substrate temperatures of 400-500 degrees C. These films exhibit high transparency and band gap energies that are comparable to that of the bulk material (3.2 eV).

Abstract:Nanocrystalline ceria (CeO2) particles have been successfully prepared via sonochemical and microwave assisted heating routes from aqueous solutions containing (NH4)2Ce(NO3)6, hexamethylenetetramine and poly (ethylene glycol)-19000 (PEG). The products were characterized by techniques such as powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller nitrogen adsorption and UV–Visible absorption spectroscopy. Analysis of the results showed that the products had uniform shape, narrow size distribution and displayed conspicuous quantum size effects.

Abstract:Nanometer CeO2 particles were synthesized by microwave irradiation. The materials included cerium sulfate and sodium hydroxide, and surfactant was polyglycol (PEG). The products were characterized by FT-IR spectrum, XRD and TGA-DTA instrument respectively. The particle size was 24.9 nm. Nanometer CeO2 was modificated with sodium laurate in order to extend its application range. Because of cross action between the four factors, the orthogonal tests were done in order to obtain the optimum condition of modification. The results reveal that the process had environmental and rapid characteristics, the particle diameter was very small, the dispersity of samples was very good and the preparation method was apt to extend.

Abstract:In this work,nanometer CeO2 particles were prepared by microwave,the materials included cerium sulfate and sodium hydroxide,the surfactant was polyglycol.The effect factors of preparing conditions were investigated respectively.The optimum conditions of synthesis process were obtained by experiments as follows:the molar ratio of reactants was 4.8∶1,the dosage of PEG in the reaction process was 8 mL,the dosage of PEG in the washing process was 7 mL,the dosage of absolute alcohol was 10 mL,the irradiation time was 6 min,the microwave irradiation pressure was 0.14 MPa,the microwave power was 232 W,the ultrasonic wave dispersing time was 10 min and the microwave drying time was 10 min.The product which was produced under optimum condition belonged to the nanometer material,the particles diameter was 24.9 nm.

Abstract:Ultrafine CeO2 powders have been prepared from a solution of cerium(III) nitrate by a two-stage precipitation process. Precipitated cerium hydroxide gel was reacted in boiling basic solutions. Amorphous cerium hydroxide gel crystallized to CeO2·nH2O (n<2) during the low-temperature hydrothermal treatment, and this process was effective to dehydrate the adsorbed water and decrease the hydrogen bonding effect leaving a weakly agglomerated powder. The preparation was calcined at 600°C to obtain urea. In order to avoid agglomerating during drying and calcining, sodium hexametaphosphate was introduced. The resulting powders are highly crystalline and weakly agglomerated.

Abstract:Uniform-sized monodisperse cerium dioxide nanocubes with 20–120nm edge lengths can be synthesized by an inexpensive microwave-assisted method. This is based on the oxidation and then decomposition of cerium (III) nitrate aqueous solution under a basic environment. The high energy emitted by microwave irradiation at a short time can promote the reaction and the crystallization process simultaneously. Both shape and size of the cerium oxide could be tuned more conveniently by changing the concentration of surfactant in the solution and the power of the microwave irradiation. The morphology and crystal structure of cerium dioxide nanocubes obtained at different conditions were characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction.

By a direct decomposition of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate in a solution of 1-octadecene and oleylamine at 180°C, well-dispersed CeO 2 nanoparticle colloid, with an average size of about 4.5 nm, was obtained.

Abstract:The preparation of nano-sized CeO2 powder by mechanochemical reaction of hydrate cerium carbonate with sodium hydroxide and subsequent heat treatment was studied using X-ray diffraction, differential thermal and thermo gravimetric analyses, and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the mechanochemical reaction process can be divided into two steps: the first step is the multi-phases mechanochemical reaction of cerium carbonate with NaOH to form amorphous cerium hydroxide, the second step is the crystallization of Ce(OH)4 to form crystalline CeO2·2H2O under a quasi-hydrothermal synthesis condition caused by the mechanical ball-milling. The CeO2 powder obtained from as-milled Ce2(CO3)3·8H2O+NaOH following water washing and heat treatment at 800 °C appears clearly separated monodisperse nano-size particles: their crystal sizes are from 10 to 20 nm and the medium size aggregated particles is 0.21 μm.

Abstract:In this work,nanometer CeO2 particles were prepared under microwave irradiation.The reactants were ceric sulfate tetrahydrate[Ce(SO4)2·4H2O] and sodium hydroxide.The surfactant was polyglycol(PEG) which dispersed the product.The products were characterized by FTIR,XRD,TG-DTA instruments and the UV-VIS spectrophotometer.The influencing factors of preparation were investigated.The optimum condition of preparing process were obtained:the amount-of-substance ratio of sodium hydroxide and ceric sulfate tetrahydrate was 4.8∶1,the quantity of PEG was 8 mL in reaction and 7 mL in washing,absolute alcohol was 10 mL in washing,irradiation time was 6 min,constant microwave irradiation pressure was 0.14 MPa,microwave power was 232 W,the ultrasonic wave dispersing time was 10 min and the microwave drying time was 10 min.Under the optimum conditions,the product′s particle size was 24.9 nm.There was a broad peak between 280 nm and 400 nm.The experiments revealed that it has excellent absorption capability in UV ray region and high transparency in the visible region.It can be added to cosmetics as sunscreen.In this preparation process the manipulation was easy,the process was environment-friendly and the diameter was very small.

Abstract:Cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) nanoparticles were obtained by heating a polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution of cerium nitrate hydrate [Ce(NO 3 ) 3 6H 2 O] at 383 K for 3 h. When the PEG, whose molecular weight was 20,000, was used for the preparation, the monodispersed CeO 2 , whose particle size was about 102 nm, was obtained. When the mixture of PEG20,000 and ethylene glycol (EG) was used to prepare the PEG solution of cerium nitrate hydrate, the average particle size increased from 102 nm to 660 nm with an increase in the EG content of the solution. The pore structure in the obtained CeO 2 particles also depended on the weight ratio between EG and PEG20,000.

Abstract:Without adding any surfactant, CeO2 nanoparticles and nanorods are prepared by a very simple hydrothermal method. CeO2 nanocrystals with different morphologies were synthesised simply by dropping ammonia into cerium nitrate [Ce(NO3)3·6H2O] water solution at room temperature. The obtained samples were characterised by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The results show that all samples are indexed to phase of CeO2. The synthesised nanoparticles are spherical with a 10-30-nm diameter and the nanorods are 100-200-nm in length and 5-10-nm in diameter. The morphology of CeO2 transforms from granular to rod-like with the ammonia concentration increasing from 0.5, 1 to 2 mol/l. The UV vis spectra exhibit a slight red shift because of increasing crystallite size.

Abstract:The nano-crystalline CeO_2 powders with cubic structure were synthesized with the deposition-molten salt method.The characters of these materials were analyzed by ways of XRD,TEM,BET and TG,etc.The reaction process was studied.By controlling the calcination temperature to the range of 500～800 ℃,different CeO_2 powders are successfully synthesized with the corresponding crystal sizes of 9.5～105 nm and specific surface of 105～9.3 m~2·g~(-1).The molten salt method is easy,cheap,and available to industrialized nano-crystalline CeO_2 powders production.

Abstract:The microwave-hydrothermal method has been investigated for the fast synthesis of rare earth cerium oxide (CeO(2)) nanoparticles and nanorods. This approach combines the advantages of both hydrothermal and microwave heating techniques. It is facile, rapid, energy-saving, and environmentally-benign and leads to high-yields. The average sizes of the obtained CeO(2) nanoparticles could be adjusted from similar to 1.6 nm to similar to 20 nm. Moreover, by changing cerium source and adjusting the amount of the added ammonia water, CeO(2) nanorods could be synthesized under microwave-assisted conditions for the first time. No calcination process or surfactant is required in our experiments for both CeO(2) nanoparticles and nanorods. The ultraviolet and visible (UV-vis) spectra show the obvious size-dependence of the position of the absorbance peak. The Brunaur Emmett Teller (BET) nitrogen adsorption indicates that these nanoparticles and nanorods have high specific surface areas, which are needed for potential applications in many fields. Compared with conventional hydrothermal method, microwave-assisted hydrothermal method shows its advantages of rapidity, convenience and perhaps cost-effectiveness and could be extended to the synthesis of other nanoparticles and nanorods.

Abstract:CeO2@SiO2 (core@shell) nanoparticles were prepared by means of chemical precipitation technique. Results from X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Zeta-potential analyses provide strong microscopic and spectroscopic evidences to prove that CeO2 particles have been encapsulated inside amorphous SiO2 shell. As revealed from TEM investigations, the average grain size of CeO2@SiO2 is significantly smaller than that of uncoated CeO2 nanoparticles prepared under the same conditions, indicating it is an effective method to restrict the grain enlargement of nanocrystalline CeO2 by coating a thin layer of SiO2 at elevated temperatures. The CeO2@SiO2 nanoparticles display a similar surface electric character behavior to that of SiO2, and its dispersibility in water is improved.

Abstract:Nano-crystalline particles of CeO2 have been synthesized via a low temperature hydrothermal synthesis process. Two types of precursors were studied—cerium hydroxide and ceria acetate. The precursors were adjusted to a basic (pH 10) and acidic (pH 4) medium before hydrothermal treatment at various durations of 6, 12, 18, and 24h at 250°C using a Teflon-lined hydrothermal bomb. The synthesized samples were characterized using DTA/TGA, XRD and TEM. Based on the characterization results, both precursor systems produced crystalline ceria nano-particles after 6h of hydrothermal synthesis at 250°C. The average crystallite sizes were 6 and 15nm for the hydroxide and acetate system, respectively. The acetate precursor system appeared to produce better particles in terms of crystallinity and morphology. Based on the DTA/TGA analysis, hydrothermal synthesis had been effective in reducing the amount of intermediate products. With increasing hydrothermal treatment duration of up to 24h, the samples did not exhibit a remarkable improvement in properties. The synthesized nano-particles were subsequently heat treated at 500 and 1000°C for 2h. After the heat treatment, enhanced crystallinity and growth in crystallite size was observed, but particles appeared more agglomerated.

Abstract:Novel slight yellow CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres were synthesized by the hydrothermal method without any surfactant and characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and x-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The results showed that the products were CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres, the shells of which were composed of CeO2nanoparticles with a mean size of 70 nm. The effect of the preparation conditions, the reaction temperature, the reaction time, and the molar ratios of urea to Ce(NO3)3·6H2O on the morphology of the products, was investigated. The optimal preparation conditions are determined as follows: the reaction temperature of 230 °C, the reaction time of 6 to 10 h, and the molar ratios of urea to Ce(NO3)3·6H2O of 3:1 to 6:1. The formation mechanism of CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres was proposed. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) diffuse reflectance spectra of the samples were measured. The results showed that the absorption edges of the samples were red-shifted compared with that of bulk CeO2, and that the red-shift of the absorption edges and the yellow of the samples enhanced with increasing the yield of CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres. The catalytic activity and the recycling performance of the sample on CO oxidation were tested and theT100%(the temperature at which CO 100% conversion) was 230 °C in the first run and decreased by 270 and 205 °C compared with that of bulk CeO2and CeO2nanocrystal, respectively.
