Abstract:In this study, a simple one-step wet chemical method was presented to prepare colloidal cerium oxide, CeO 2 , nanocrystals. By a direct decomposition of cerium(IV) ammonium nitrate in a solution of 1-octadecene and oleylamine at 180°C, well-dispersed CeO 2 nanoparticle colloid, with an average size of about 4.5 nm, was obtained.

Abstract:This article reports a novel preparation of nearly monodisperse spherical aggregates of CeO2 nanocrystals by using ionic liquid (1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide, C(16)MimBr) as both template and solvent. The products were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy, and N-2 adsorption-desorption methods. The spherical aggregates, with average diameter of 100 - 150 nm, are composed of ca. 3.5 nm CeO2 nanocrystals as building units, giving rise to three-dimensional (313) open porous structures with high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area of 119 m(2).g(-1). Mesoporous CeO2 with surface area up to 227 m(2).g(-1) was prepared by simply tuning the amount of the ionic liquids. Loaded with 5 wt% CuO, both the spherical aggregates and the mesoporous CeO2 exhibit high catalytic activities for CO conversion with 100% conversion rates at low temperature of 150 degrees C, suggesting potential applications in preferential oxidation (PROX) and water-gas shift reaction (WGSR). This sustainable and facile method may be extended to the preparation of other metal oxide nanoarchitectures and provides guidance for structure-controlled synthesis.

Abstract:CeO2 nanoparticles with good monodispersity and narrow size distribution were synthesized by the combined method of homogenous precipitation with microemulsion. The affect factors of preparing conditions were investigated. The products were characterized by XRD, TEM, FTIR, DTA and TGA. It was found that the average size of CeO2 nanoparticles could be tailored by adjusting the precipitation temperature, calcination temperature, and the sort of surfactants or the relative concentration of reactants.

Abstract:CeO2(IV) fine particles were prepared by heating a polyethylene glycol solution of Ce(NO3)(3).6H(2)O at 383K for 3 h. When a polyethylene glycol whose molecular weight was 7500 or 20000 was used for the preparation, the obtained CeO2 particles were almost monodispersed.

Abstract:CeO2 nanoparticles with good monodispersity and narrow size distribution were synthesized hy the coupling route of W/O microemulsion with homogenous precipitation. The morphology, size, size distrbution and the crystal structure of CeO2 nanoparticles were inspected. It was found that the sort of surfactants and the relative initial concentration of reactants have regular affections on the average size of products. The average size of products increases sharply with the calcination temperature. Research results may present a promising method for the synthesis of nanoparticles with controlled size and size distribution.

Abstract:CeO2 nanoparticles hydrosol was synthesized by colloidal chemical method. The optimum experiment conditions for the preparation of CeO2 nanoparticles hydrosol were discussed. The effects of pH values, the reactant concentration and temperature on peptization process were studied. TEM photos showed that the CeO2 nanoparticles were spherical in shape and the size was about 3nm. Particle size distribution was in narrow range, and no agglomerates were observed. ED images indicated that the CeO2 nanoparticles were polycrystalline structure, and some of CeO2 were monocrystal particles.

Abstract:Cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) nanoparticles were obtained by heating a polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution of cerium nitrate hydrate [Ce(NO 3 ) 3 6H 2 O] at 383 K for 3 h. When the PEG, whose molecular weight was 20,000, was used for the preparation, the monodispersed CeO 2 , whose particle size was about 102 nm, was obtained. When the mixture of PEG20,000 and ethylene glycol (EG) was used to prepare the PEG solution of cerium nitrate hydrate, the average particle size increased from 102 nm to 660 nm with an increase in the EG content of the solution. The pore structure in the obtained CeO 2 particles also depended on the weight ratio between EG and PEG20,000.

Abstract:Without adding any surfactant, CeO2 nanoparticles and nanorods are prepared by a very simple hydrothermal method. CeO2 nanocrystals with different morphologies were synthesised simply by dropping ammonia into cerium nitrate [Ce(NO3)3·6H2O] water solution at room temperature. The obtained samples were characterised by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The results show that all samples are indexed to phase of CeO2. The synthesised nanoparticles are spherical with a 10-30-nm diameter and the nanorods are 100-200-nm in length and 5-10-nm in diameter. The morphology of CeO2 transforms from granular to rod-like with the ammonia concentration increasing from 0.5, 1 to 2 mol/l. The UV vis spectra exhibit a slight red shift because of increasing crystallite size.

Abstract:CeO2@SiO2 (core@shell) nanoparticles were prepared by means of chemical precipitation technique. As revealed from TEM investigations, the average grain size of CeO2@SiO2 is significantly smaller than that of uncoated CeO2 nanoparticles prepared under the same conditions, indicating it is an effective method to restrict the grain enlargement of nanocrystalline CeO2 by coating a thin layer of SiO2 at elevated temperatures. The CeO2@SiO2 nanoparticles display a similar surface electric character behavior to that of SiO2, and its dispersibility in water is improved.

Abstract:Cubic-like CeO2 nanocrystals were successfully synthesized through an improved-toluene solvothermal process using hexadecylamine (HAD) as a capping agent and CeCl3·7H2O as a precursor at 180°C for 24h. These nanocubes are about 10nm in size, and have a tendency to assemble into 2D superstructure. The obtained samples were characterized by means of X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that the water content, the concentration of ligand and kinds of aliphatic amine played important roles in the formation of the novel morphology. A possible formation mechanism was proposed based on the controlling reaction parameters. The electrochemical and photocatalytic properties of the as-synthesized samples exhibited the size/shape-dependent properties and potential applications.

Abstract:Nanometer CeO2 particles were synthesized by microwave irradiation. The materials included cerium sulfate and sodium hydroxide, and surfactant was polyglycol (PEG). The products were characterized by FT-IR spectrum, XRD and TGA-DTA instrument respectively. The particle size was 24.9 nm. Nanometer CeO2 was modificated with sodium laurate in order to extend its application range. Because of cross action between the four factors, the orthogonal tests were done in order to obtain the optimum condition of modification. The results reveal that the process had environmental and rapid characteristics, the particle diameter was very small, the dispersity of samples was very good and the preparation method was apt to extend.
Study of the Preparation and Properties of CeO2single/multiwall Hollow Microspheres

Abstract:Novel slight yellow CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres were synthesized by the hydrothermal method without any surfactant and characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and x-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS). The results showed that the products were CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres, the shells of which were composed of CeO2nanoparticles with a mean size of 70 nm. The effect of the preparation conditions, the reaction temperature, the reaction time, and the molar ratios of urea to Ce(NO3)3·6H2O on the morphology of the products, was investigated. The optimal preparation conditions are determined as follows: the reaction temperature of 230 °C, the reaction time of 6 to 10 h, and the molar ratios of urea to Ce(NO3)3·6H2O of 3:1 to 6:1. The formation mechanism of CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres was proposed. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) diffuse reflectance spectra of the samples were measured. The results showed that the absorption edges of the samples were red-shifted compared with that of bulk CeO2, and that the red-shift of the absorption edges and the yellow of the samples enhanced with increasing the yield of CeO2single/multiwall hollow microspheres. The catalytic activity and the recycling performance of the sample on CO oxidation were tested and theT100%(the temperature at which CO 100% conversion) was 230 °C in the first run and decreased by 270 and 205 °C compared with that of bulk CeO2and CeO2nanocrystal, respectively.
Size controlled synthesis of CeO2 nanoparticles by a microemulsion method

Abstract:Precursors of CeO2 were synthesized in a reverse microemulsion composed of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), 1-butanol, 1-octane, Ce(NO3)3 brine (ammonia). The optimum calcination temperature (550 ° C) was derived from thermogravimetry (TG) analysis and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The CeO2 nanoparticles were then prepared by calcining the precursors at 550 ° C. The structures, morphologies, size, and UV absorption properties of the CeO2 nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Cubic crystalline CeO2 nanoparticles of 5 -18 nm in size and with good monodispersity were obtained using this method. The influences of the mass ratio of 1-octane to 1-butanol and the concentration of Ce(NO3)3 on the size of the CeO2 nanoparticles were studied. Results showed that CeO2 nanoparticle size was dependent on the mass ratio of 1- octane to 1-butanol and the concentration of Ce(NO3)3. The size of the CeO2 nanoparticles decreased as the mass ratio of 1-octane to 1-butanol as well as the concentration of Ce(NO3)3 increased. In addition, we studied the UV absorption properties of the CeO2 nanoparticles by UV-Vis spectroscopy. © Editorial office of Acta Physico-Chimica Sinica.

Abstract:Monodisperse Fe3O4nanospheres with uniform particle size distribution were synthesized by a simple solvothermal method, without adding any surfactants and structure directing agents. The morphology, structure and phase composition of the nanospheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2adsorption stripping curves and pore size distribution curves. The measurements revealed that the Fe3O4nanospheres were assembled by 5-10 nm nanocrystallines; with porous structure, their specific surface area reached 41 m2/g. In addition, the formation mechanism of the nanospheres was elaborately analyzed by adjusting the solvothermal reaction temperature and time. It's confirmed that this preparation method has a strong universality. ZnO and CuO nano- and microspheres have been synthesized with the same or similar experimental parameters. These nano-and microspheres will have a more significant application prospect in the energy- and environment-related fields for the use of li-ion battery anode, supercapacitor, catalysis, etc.
Spontaneous Organization of Uniform CeO2 Nanoflowers by 3D Oriented Attachment in Hot Surfactant Solutions Monitored with an in Situ Electrical Conductance Technique

Abstract:Uniform CeO(2) nanoflowers were synthesized by rapid thermolysis of (NH(4))(2)Ce(NO(3))(6) in oleic acid (OA)/oleylamine (OM), by a unique 3D oriented-attachment mechanism. CeO(2) nanoflowers with controlled shape (cubic, four-petaled, and starlike) and tunable size (10-40 nm) were obtained by adjusting the reaction conditions including solvent composition, precursor concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time. The nanoflower growth mechanism was investigated by in situ electrical conductance measurements, transmission electron microscopy, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. The CeO(2) nanoflowers are likely formed in two major steps, that is, initial formation of ceria cluster particles capped with various ligands (e.g., OA, OM, and NO(3) (-)) via hydrolysis of (NH(4))(2)Ce(NO(3))(6) at temperatures in the range 140-220 degrees C, and subsequent spontaneous organization of the primary particles into nanoflowers by 3D oriented attachment, due to a rapid decrease in surface ligand coverage caused by sudden decomposition of the precursor at temperatures above 220 degrees C in a strong redox reaction. After calcination at 400 degrees C for 4 h the 33.8 nm CeO(2) nanoflowers have a specific surface area as large as 156 m(2) g(-1) with high porosity, and they are highly active for conversion of CO to CO(2) in the low temperature range of 200-400 degrees C. The present approach has also been extended to the preparation of other transition metal oxide (CoO, NiO, and CuO(x)) nanoflowers.
