Abstract:Determination of the magnetic field around an electromagnetic velocity probe is a key work for the dry calibration of the probe. In the paper, a novel divisionally analytical reconstruction approach to determine the magnetic field is introduced. It is especially suitable to be used in the dry calibration due to following advantages: no numerous measurements needed, unnecessary to know the inner magnetic exciting structure of the probe, high accuracy and convenient for further calculations. It is a measurement and calculation joint approach, in which the magnetic field is calculated from the measured boundary conditions through solving a Laplace’s equation of magnetic scalar potential. To obtain an analytical solution of the Laplace’s equation, the complex calculation geometry around the probe is divided into two simple ones using an auxiliary surface, and then the Laplace’s equation in the each generated geometry is analytically solved through a method of separation of variables. The divisionally analytical solution is pre-requisite since a pure analytical solution can bring convenience for further calculations in the dry calibration and such a solution is still lacked due to the complexity of the calculation geometry. A magnetic scanning device used to measure the distributions of the normal component of magnetic field on the surface of probe and the auxiliary surface is also introduced. The measured data provide the required boundary conditions for the determination of the magnetic field. Finally, the novel approach is validated through reconstructing the magnetic field around an actual electromagnetic velocity probe and comparing the results with the experimentally measured data.

Abstract:We demonstrate the capability of a molecular tracer based laser induced fluorescence photobleaching anemometer for measuring fluid velocity profile in microfluidics. To validate the feasibility and accuracy of this measurement system, the velocity profiles of the cylindrical and rectangular microchannels are measured, respectively. We compare our experimental results with theoretical prediction. The theoretical prediction shows a good consistency with practical measurement results. The spatial resolutions are analyzed and validated. Finally, the error source of the presented system is analyzed, which makes it possible to compensate some error quantitatively and guides the application of this system.

Abstract:Calibration wind tunnel is important equipment for calibration of wind speed sensors. A set of low speed direct-current wind tunnels specially used for sensor calibration are developed. The determination of technical parameters of small wind tunnel,aerodynamic profile design,overall structural design and fabrication are introduced in detail,and the field flow of the wind tunnel is tested comprehensively. Results show that,the inverter output frequency and wind speed of the small-sized direct-current calibration wind tunnel have a good linear relationship,the dynamic pressure stability and uniformity of the exit flow is good,and the flow turbulence is small. The results mean the development of small-sized direct-current calibration wind tunnel is successful,and it can be used to calibrate the wind speed sensors.

Abstract:A multihole probe is a very effective sensor for measuring the velocity and direction of a flow field. Compared with other sensors, it has a highly reliable and wide range of application prospects. A comparative analysis of probes of different shapes is carried out, where it is found that a hemispherical seven-hole probe with a vertical surface structure opening is the upgrade structure. Based on the spherical structure, a theoretical calibration method for the probe is proposed, and the correlation between the pressure in the hole and the velocity of the flow field is established by a pressure-velocity parameter equation. By calibrating the hemispherical seven-hole probe, it is found that the speed error is less than 5%, and the angle error is less than 2°. Compared with other calibration methods, the proposed calibration process is greatly shortened. At the same time, the hemispherical seven-hole probe is used to measure the flow field around a cylinder, where frequency changes of 3.497, 2.083, and 1.657 Hz are observed in 3, 5, and 9 cm cylindrical vortexes, respectively. It is proved that the multihole probe also has the ability to detect complex flow fields.

Abstract:The flowrate measurement devices or instruments in small channel are very limited.Based on Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection(C~4D) technique and cross-correlation velocity measurement principle,a new method for flowrate measurement in millimeter-scale pipe is proposed and a new measurement device is developed.Two pairs of electronic switches are used to obtain two independent conductivity signals of the fluid.By cross-correlating the two signals,the velocity and flowrate of the fluid can be determined.As a preliminary research,flowrate measurement experiments are carried out in two pipes with the inner diameters of 3.2 mm and 5.4 mm,respectively.The experimental results show that the new proposed method based on C~4D technique for flowrate measurement is feasible and effective.

Abstract:Combining the Capacitively Coupled Contactless Conductivity Detection (C4D) technique and the principle of cross correlation flow measurement, a new method for flow rate measurement in millimeter-scale pipes was proposed. The research work included two parts. First, a new five-electrode C4D sensor was developed. Second, with two conductivity signals obtained by the developed sensor, the flow rate measurement was implemented by using the principle of cross correlation flow measurement. The experimental results showed that the proposed flow rate measurement method was effective, the developed five-electrode C4D sensor was successful, and the measurement accuracy was satisfactory. In five millimeter-scale pipes with different inner diameters of 0.5, 0.8, 1.8, 3.0 and 3.9 mm respectively, the maximum relative difference of the flow rate measurement between the reference flow rate and the measured flow rate was less than 5%.
Calibration of Laser Beam-Direction for Point Laser Sensors

Abstract:A new calibration method of laser beam-direction was presented to implement any-orientation measurement for point laser sensors in reverse engineering.A calibration block whose calibration surface could be adjusted was designed to co-operate the calibration approach.During the calibration,the point laser sensor steped in an equal distance along X、Y、Z axes in the calibration surface,then the laser beam-direction could be confirmed according to the relationship between the stepping size and the length change of laser beam.Based on the CMM platform,the coordinate transformation process from the sensor coordinate system to the reference coordinate system was deduced when the point laser sensor was set in any-orientation,and the calibrating process was introduced in details.Finally,a comparison experiment on contact measurement and point laser measurement was carried out to verify the proposed method.Experimental results indicate that the error of the point laser sensor calibrated by the proposed method is (0.045 2±0.016 8) mm,which can satisfy the requirements of sampling accuracy in reverse engineering.

Abstract:The bidirectional fluid solid coupling technique was adopted to analyze the three-element flow problem that the interferometric probe interacts with the wet steam flow field at the end stage of the steam turbine. The vibration characteristics and stress of the probe under wet steam flow field were studied. The fluid solid coupling model was built by using Workbench platform. The k-ω model based on turbulent shear stress transport was used to improve calculation accuracy. Results show that the vibration period of the three directions X, Y and Z of probe fluctuate slightly. The oscillation amplitudes in directions X, Y and Z were 0.28 mm, 4.75 μm and 5.50 μm, respectively. Due to the special structure of the optical probe, the pressure differential force acting on the tip of the probe is very small, leading to a decrease in the growth rate of the shape variable at the front end. During probe vibration, the maximum stress position of the probe is about 2/3 of the point in the direction of back flow of the probe, the maximum stress is far below the allowable stress of the probe material, and the resonance effect is not induced in the calculation condition.
Φ120 Hypersonic Wind Tunnel Flow Field Calibration

Abstract:This paper introduces the design performance parameters, flow field calibration results and standard model force measurements of Φ120 hypersonic wind tunnel of Zhejiang University. This wind tunnel adopts conventional "blow-suck" layout. The diameter of the nozzle outlet is 120 mm; the design operation Mach number is 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0; the total pressure of the incoming flow is 0.2～2.0 MPa; the total temperature of the incoming flow is 400～700 K; and the running time is not less than 10 seconds. The flow field calibration results show that the uniform region diameters of the 5.0/6.0/7.0 nozzles are more than 90mm; the average Mach numbers of the uniform region are 5.07, 6.05 and 6.94; the rms deviations are 0.018,0.015 and 0.023; and the axial Mach gradients of the uniform region are 0.021, 0.016 and 0.031 respectively. All the above key parameters reach the GJB1179A-2012 qualified indices, and some parameters reach the GJB1179A-2012 advanced indices. The aerodynamic force measurement results of the AGARD HB-2 standard model in the Φ120 hypersonic wind tunnel are consistent with the simulation results of in-house code GRAND and the reference experimental results in GJB4399-2002. In summary, Φ120 hypersonic wind tunnel has a wide range of parameters, which is applicable for hypersonic aerodynamic teaching experiments and advanced scientific research subjects such as hypersonic complex flow mechanism and flow control for heat and drag reduction.

Abstract:The multi-hole probe can measure the velocity and three-dimensional direction of the flow field at the same time, so it is often used to measure the three-dimensional flow field. Compared with other flow field measuring instruments, the multi-hole probe has stronger environmental adaptability and stability, and can better measure the three-dimensional flow field of the middle atmosphere. Therefore, a hemispherical 7-hole probe was designed, a pressure–velocity parameterized equation was established based on the theory of flow around a sphere, and a new calibration method was developed based on this. The calibration is carried out in a subsonic low speed wind tunnel, multiple combinations of flow parameters (inflow velocity and flow angles) are adjusted during the calibration. The results are compared with the numerical simulation results, both are quite close, with a speed measurement deviation of less than 5% and an angle measurement deviation of less than 1°. Our results establish the practicality of the hemispherical 7-hole probe and the simplified calibration procedure, both of which improve calibration efficiency and lower probe calibration costs.

Abstract:Multi-hole probes can simultaneously measure the velocity and direction of a flow field, obtain the distribution of the flow field in a three-dimensional space, and obtain the vortex information in the flow field. Moreover, a multi-hole probe needs to be calibrated while in use; therefore, a three-coordinate, multi-directional rotatable testing system, which can measure the flow field at any position and at any angle, was designed herein. A hemispherical seven-hole probe was calibrated with this test system, and the flow field around cylinders of different diameters was measured to obtain the pressure distribution and vortex shedding frequency. Furthermore, the designed test system’s ability to perform a multi-angle and multi-azimuth testing during the calibration of a multi-hole probe was verified. Simultaneously, through data mining of the multi-hole probe, vortices were measured, and periodic vortices were detected.

Study on new gas flow sensor based on hot-film probe

Abstract:A new sensor for gas flowrate measurement is proposed based on heat transfer principle of hot-film probe. Firstly, the operation current of the probe is determined by studying the temperature characteristics under different surrounding temperatures and various currents. Then, the relationship between the sensing resistance and the compensation resistance of the probe is analyzed. The sensor circuit with the function of temperature compensation is developed to decrease the influence of the surrounding temperature. Finally, the measurement model of the gas flow sensor is established according to the data from calibration experiments. Research results show that the sensors have good consistency. The measurement accuracy is within 0.8% and the ratio of the dynamic measurement range is up to 100:1.

Comparison of two flow measurement devices for use in fire experiments

Abstract:Bi-directional probes are utilized throughout fire science to measure fire-induced flows due to their ability to measure flow which changes direction, and to withstand hostile environments. However, they are not available commercially and researchers must take it upon themselves to make and manufacture them. S-type pitot probes (S-probes) work on the same principle as bi-directional probes, measuring the differential pressure between two openings, thereby offering the same benefits. However, S-probes also feature reliable manufacturing and calibration standards. In this study, the performance of bi-directional and S-probes is characterized against pitot-static probes in two scenarios. First, measurements of a steady, smooth flow in a well-characterized wind tunnel are examined. Second, the probes are used to measure the velocity profile across a turbulent jet from a blower fan. In both scenarios, the S-probe performed comparable to or better than the bi-directional probe in terms of accuracy. It is found that S-probes have similar performance to bi-directional probes in well conditioned flows. In the turbulent jet flow measurements, S-probe measurements are within 2% of pitot-static measurements in the core region of the jet, while bi-directional probes are within 6%.
Numerical Simulation and Experimental Research on Measurement Characteristics of Elbow Meter

Abstract:In order to optimize its measurement, the measurement characteristics of an elbow meter was studied using numerical simulations and calibration tests.Based on the findings from numerical simulations for the flow field of the elbow meter, a suitable port angle was determined according to the pressure distribution in the meter. Then experiments were carried out in a DN100 pipe with airflow. The results show that, first of all, 45° port angle may increase the sensitivity of pressure measurements and decrease the influence of frictional secondary flow on the flow measurement; Second, in the flowrate range studied, the flow coefficients of the elbow meter is stable, and its relative errors are all within±3%, which can satisfy the fluid flow measurement in most industrial applications.

Abstract:The necessary for the test in the large unsteady separated area is put forward with the more deeply research in turbo-machine. A three-hole pressure probe is traditionally used to measure steady flow and its calibration range is always distribute between ±18°. In the two-dimension vane examination processed by the author, because the attack angle was large and the test points located near the edge, the flowing angles of different test points after vane vary greatly. To deal with the problem, we have widened the calibration range of three-hole pressure probe to ±50° and made some reasonable improvements to the data processing method.

Abstract:Several comparative studies on flow measurement methods for Diesel cylinder water hole were finished. An accuracy comparison test benchandaflow field effect comparison test benchwereestablished.To verify the results, real machine measurementexperiments and the comparison between simulation and experiment were carried out.The results show that the electromagnetic method and turbine method haverelatively low average error through the whole flow range;the errors of all methods becomegreaterwhen flow & caliber decrease, especially for electromagnetic method and pore-plate method whoserelativeerror even exceed 5%.The flow field effects of all methods becomegreaterwhenthe flow increases(approximately followedby linear of index); the effects of electromagnetic method & turbine methodare smallerthan others.The maximum flow measurement relative error was lower than 2.5% and the average relative erroris lower than 1.5%. The pressure loss range and variation tendencyare basically consistent with simulation tests. Comparative resultsare proved to be effective.

Abstract:An experimental study of the 3-dimension velocity measurement of flue gas by the cross correlation method is introduced. Measurements are carried out on high-temperature diesel flue gas in pipe with a specially fabricated probe, which consists of four pressure sensors laid in 3-dimensional coordinate axis. The flue gas pressure pulse signals and temperature pulse signals are analyzed to obtain the effects of flue gas velocity and temperature on the principal fluctuation frequency of gas flow, and further to choose a proper sensor. Experimental results indicated that, this measurement method has higher measurement precision and stability and stronger noise-resistance, which is applicable to industrial application.
Study on Quasi-S Type Pitot Tube and Its Measurement Characteristics

Abstract:The S type Pitot tube is one of the most widely used meters for dust contained gas velocity measurements in the industrial field,but the large pressure ports it has have influence on its measurement performance.A new kind of S type Pitot tube,named quasi-S type Pitot tube,is studied in order to decrease the effect caused by pressure ports but maintain its merits.Based on the findings from numerical simulations for the flow field of quasi-S type Pitot tube,a suitable port angle is determined for the better configuration.Then air experiments are carried out in a DN100 pipe with the flow velocity ranged from 15~50 m/s.The results show that the calibration coefficients of the quasi-S type Pitot tube is quite stable and very close to 1,and its relative errors are ±4 %,which can satisfy the fluid flow measurement in most industrial applications.

Abstract:Poor anti-disturbance ability to piping vibrations is one of the most difficult problems in vortex flowmeters which have been widely used in many industrial fields. Duct-wall differential pressure method (DDPM) proposed by the author's previous work is proved to be an effective measure to reduce these interferences. In order to improve the performance of DDPM, the relationship between pressure-sampling tube's natural frequency and its geometrical parameters was derived by theoretical modeling, and the influences of different pressure-sampling positions, pressure-sampling tubes, duct diameters and bluff body shapes on the performance of DDPM-based vortex flowmeter were compared and discussed experimentally. One important feature found is that the pressure-sampling system hardly affects the measurment of signal frequencies in DDPM but it has great impact on the signal amplitudes. Measures to reduce the distortion of signal amplitudes include increasing the natural frequency of pressure-sampling system, choosing symmetric sampling tubes and selecting their parameters according to specific measurement conditions, etc. It is also found that despite of duct diameter and bluff body shape, the amplitudes of duct-wall differential pressures in DDPM fall and keep nearly a finite constant after they reach the peak values, which may reduce the requirement of signal amplifiers. These properties of the pressure sensor are useful to improve the design of DDPM-based vortex flowmeters in flow measurement and at the same time give an in-depth understanding about the measurement of differential pressures.
