Abstract:It is widely known that universal constraints play a pivotal role in OT analysis. Thus, the better understanding of the types of constraints in OT, the problems in positing the constraints, the definition of the constraints and the differences between the OT constraints and the rewrite rules or the universal principles used in the previous phonological theories, is not only significant in gaining a mastery of OT theoretical principles, but also prerequisite to the application of OT in linguistic analysis.

Abstract:In the early 1990's,the Theory of "Markedness" was introduced to China and has been utilized more frequently to research on Chinese grammar.Two concepts should be differentiated from each other clearly when this theory is employed: the "markedness" does not mean "asymmetrical phenomena".The main difference is that "markedness" requires an element which occupies a dominant position in frequency of utilization and distribution of syntax."markedness" is also different from "pro forma mark",the former is a phenomenon while the latter is a concrete word or structure.

Abstract:A recent theory provides a unified cross-linguistic analysis of the interpretations that are assigned to expressions for disjunction, Negative Polarity Items, Free Choice Items, and the non-interrogative uses of wh-phrases in languages such as Mandarin Chinese. If this approach is on the right track, children should be expected to demonstrate similar patterns in the acquisition of these linguistic expressions. Previous research has found that, by age four, children have acquired the knowledge that both the existential indefinite renhe "any" and wh-words in Mandarin Chinese are interpreted as Negative Polarity Items when they are bound by downward entailing operators, but the same expressions are interpreted as Free Choice Items (with a conjunctive interpretation) when they are bound by deontic modals (Mandarin keyi) or by the Mandarin adverbial quantifier dou "all". The present study extends this line of research to the Mandarin disjunction word huozhe. A Truth Value Judgment Task was used to investigate the possibility that disjunction phrases that are bound by the adverbial quantifier dou generate a conjunctive interpretation in the grammars of Mandarin-speaking 4-year-old children. The findings confirmed this prediction. We discuss the implications of the findings for linguistic theory and for language learnability.

Abstract:The present study used a Truth Value Judgment Task to investigate whether changes in sentence structure lead to corresponding changes in the assignment of scope relations by Mandarin-speaking children and adults. In one condition, participants were presented with ordinary negative sentences containing disjunction; this condition was designed to verify the existing claim that disjunction is a positive polarity item for adult speakers of Mandarin, but not for child speakers. In a second condition, participants were presented with negative sentences where the disjunction phrase was preposed from object position; this condition was designed to examine the extent to which changes in sentence structure can result in changes in scope assignments to negated disjunctions. The results indicate that the preposed disjunction phrase undergoes reconstruction for children, whereas reconstruction is blocked for adults. This finding also suggests that Mandarin-speaking children and adults exhibit different scope preferences for negated disjunctions, regardless of where the disjunction phrase appears in the surface syntax.

Abstract:Markedness of both linguistic and cognitive categories are considered to be two of the constraints on L1 transfer. Linguistic theory of markedness suggests that the relative markedness of L1 and L2 features can be used to predict the areas of L2 difficulty and L1 transfer. Cognitive theory of markedness,on the other hand,claims that learners' understanding of the transferability of L1 features is based on their perception of the prototypicality of those features rather than the markedness itself. Markedness-based theories of L1 transfer are enlightening to us in our reconsideration of L1's role,studies on the Chinese-L2 differences,L2 teaching and the like.

Marked Themes in Spoken Chinese: a Discourse Semantics Perspective

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis paper focuses on Marked Theme in spoken Chinese. Previous studies have explored the functions of Marked Themes within clauses, but not many researchers have observed this phenomenon from a discourse semantics perspective. Combining the framework of discourse semantics with the use of corpus study, this paper first explores the occurrence of such structures in conversations and then examines their discourse functions. Data from the corpus show that, in line with findings from corpus studies of written texts, the occurrence of Marked Themes is quite low. The inspection of their discourse functions leads to the following preliminary findings: (1) in sequences of activities, Marked Themes often function as lexical cohesive devices to build up taxonomical relations across utterances; (2) from the view point of identification, Marked Themes function as anaphoric devices to help keep track of the Participants in question; (3) from the viewpoint of periodicity, while most Marked Themes convey given information, especially contrastive information, a considerable amount of Marked Themes function as HyperTheme to start new phases of discourse.

Abstract:Modality and negation, as two important linguistic features used to realise subjectivity, have been investigated within various disciplines, such as logic, linguistics and philosophy, and law. The interaction between modality and negation, as a relatively new and undeveloped domain, has however not been paid due attention in scholarship. This corpus-based study investigates three aspects of their interaction: the differentiation of the deontic value by negation, the categorization of deontic modality in Hong Kong legislation via negation, and distribution patterns of deontic modality, especially distribution patterns of the negation of modality, in Hong Kong legislation. This study shows that negation is a powerful linguistic mechanism not only for determining the nature and functions of modality, but also for determining the value of modality. This study also reveals that negation helps us to investigate the distribution of deontic modality in Hong Kong legislation and hence revisit the legal framework in Hong Kong. A study taking into account the discursive and professional aspects of the interaction between deontic modality and negation will provide a theoretical basis for the natural language processing of modality and negation in legislation and also offer important implications for the study of negation and modality in general contexts.
Markedness reversal:The iconicity of prosody and syntax in Chinese

Abstract:Markedness reversal is defined in this paper as a reversal of a particular feature between a category and a subcategory under that category.In Mandarin Chinese the mono-vs.di-syllable distinction and the related [2+1] vs.[1+2] distinction in syllable alignment determines to a large degree the differentiation of two major syntactic relations,attributive-noun and verb-object.This kind of prosodic distinction is actually a morpho-syntactic means characteristic of the Chinese language which lacks inflectional morphology of the Indo-European languages.The fact is explained by markedness reversal,motivated by the iconicity of tightness and quantity between prosodic structures and syntactic relations,because in Chinese verbs constitute a subcategory in the noun category and adjectives a subcategory in the verb category.The related markedness reversal also sheds light on the characteristics of Chinese in its word class system.Typologically,in addition to the fact that Chinese adjectives behave more like verbs,more importantly,the primary distinction of word classes in Chinese is between depictives and non-depictives,the former includ～ing reduplicative forms of nouns,verbs and adjectives.

Abstract:This paper discusses the motivation and methods of prosodic constraints in syntactic movement through two examples:The constraints on the construction "VR(verb-resultative complement) +object" and that of "X huà(化) +object". The prosodic constraint on syntax is indirect and is realized and mediated by the prosodic unit. It proposes that the mismatch between the prosodic unit and the syntactic unit provides the possibilities of the prosodic constraint on syntax.

Abstract:Dependency syntax holds that the goal of syntactic analysis is to establish all the binary relations between words in a sentence. This process is closely related to working memory. In a sentence, the words between two syntactically related words make for dependency distance, which is an index of sentence comprehension difficulty because, when the two syntactically related words are combined to each other in working memory, the first of them may suffer from memory decay or memory interference caused by the intervening words. Thus, working memory and the least effort principle may dictate a universal tendency for syntactic structures to be organized in such ways as to reduce dependency distance. This tendency has great shaping effect on the patterns of word order in human languages and is potentially able to account for many linguistic universals in language typology. As for the sporadic long dependency structures motivated by communicative needs, specific syntactic patterns may have evolved, utilizing some cognitive mechanisms to lessen the memory load of these long dependencies. Syntactic structures, therefore, are probably the result of self-adaption of a language system to certain external human constraints and motivations, among which working memory is a very important one.

Abstract:This contribution examines the descriptive and resultative de-constructions in Mandarin Chinese, e.g. Wǒ pǎo-de hěn kuai ‘I run very fast’. There is a longstanding debate about this construction. The primary point of dispute concerns the main predicate: Is the first predicate the root of the sentence, i.e. pǎo-de ‘run’, or is the second predicate the root, i.e. kuai ‘fast’? We demonstrate here that from a dependency grammar (DG) perspective, the second predicate should be taken as the root. A number of diagnostics support this conclusion: 1) yes/no-questions with ma, 2) position of the negation bu, 3) omission, 4) placement of the adverb yě ‘also’, 5) ne-questions, and 6) modal insertion. The conclusion is important for the development of DG as applied to the syntax of Mandarin, since many basic questions about Mandarin sentence structure have not yet been examined from a DG perspective.
An Investigation into the Semantics of the Definite-topic Construction

Abstract:Previous studies have revealed that a semantically well-formed object-fronted-as-topic sentence ( OFAT) has to meet an important semantic condition: The part of comment expresses (or implicates) the state of the topic. This is the macro-condition that an OFAT must satisfy. A sentence of this type has to satisfy a number of micro-conditions. When the topic is a definite NP,verbs of creation taking the aspect marker le or guo can appear in the comment. When the topic is a proximal definite NP,verbs of destruction can not appear in the comment if taking le but can if taking guo. When the topic is a distal definite NP,verbs of creation can appear in the comment no matter whether taking le or guo. Verbs that express neither creation nor destruction behave in various ways. Whether a verb of this type can appear in the ORAT depends on whether the combination of its ontological meaning and the meaning of an aspect marker can trigger an inference about the state of the topic in a particular context.
Major Constituents and Two Dependency Grammar Constraints on Sharing in Coordination

Abstract:The article examines the usage of the "major constituent" concept in theories of coordination. The literature on coordination references major constituents when predicting the material that may and may not be shared by the conjuncts of coordinate structures. Previous attempts at defining the concept are, however, vague and insufficient. Hence the article presents a new definition. This definition is based in a dependency grammar frame-work. In addition to this new definition, two constraints are proposed that help predict which material can be shared in coordination. The first constraint, called the Restriction on External Sharing (RES) predicts which material external to coordinate structures can be shared. The second constraint, called the Restriction on Internal Sharing (RIS), predicts which material internal to the initial conjunct can be shared. A central aspect of the approach is the distinction between conjunct-external and conjunct-internal sharing. Various data are examined that demonstrate the validity of this distinction.
The properties of rare and complex syntactic constructions in English. A corpus-based comparative study

Abstract:The study adopts a corpus-based approach to investigate rare and complex constructions in English, such as it-clefts and topicalization. Two dependency-based metrics, namely dependency distance (DD) and hierarchical distance (HD) were used to measure and compare the syntactic complexities at the linear and hierarchical levels of three treebanks, i.e., one specially-designed corpus containing many difficult and infrequent constructions and two reference corpora containing normal constructions. It was found that compared to normal constructions, syntactically infrequent and complex constructions may enjoy higher complexity at the linear level, i.e., longer dependencies, but they are not necessarily more complex at the hierarchical level. In fact, the results suggest that syntactically marked constructions are less tolerant of structural or hierarchical complexity, which may be motivated by a mechanism to avoid self-embedding or recursion driven by limited cognitive resources of human beings.
The Status of Function Words in Dependency Grammar: A Critique of Universal Dependencies (UD)

Abstract:The article examines the Universal Dependencies (UD) annotation scheme. The UD project is an international initiative to produce treebanks of the world's languages, whereby the treebanks have been annotated in a cross-linguistically consistent manner. A central aspect of the UD annotation scheme is its analysis of function words. The scheme advocates subordinating function words to content words. This article discusses linguistic and practical motivations behind the UD decision to subordinate function words to content words. It demonstrates that UD choices in this area are not supported linguistically. At the same time, the near convertibility of the UD treebanks to a more linguistically motivated annotation format means that the UD initiative remains of great value to linguistics in general.
A Cognitive Semantic and Pragmatic Account of the Constraints on Chinese Topic Constructions

Abstract:This article outlines a unified account of the constraints on Chinese topic constructions from a cognitive semantic and pragmatic perspective.Based on the reference point theory in cognitive grammar,we propose a general licensing condition for Chinese topic constructions: there should be a possessive relationship between the topic and a certain argument in the comment clause.This condition has three sub-conditions:(1) there is a "prototypical possessive relationship" between the topic and a certain argument in the comment clause;(2) there is a "self-possessive relationship" between the topic and a certain argument in the comment clause;(3) there is a "locative possessive relationship" between the topic and a certain argument in the comment clause.Pragmatics has twofold functions in the formation of Chinese topic constructions:(1) the argument that establishes possessive relationship with the topic can be gained from pragmatic inference;(2) pragmatic inference may block the reference point relationship between the topic and the comment,leading to the ill-formedness of the construction.
