Abstract:The paradox of Tianjin tone sandhi,first recognized by Chen(1986),has ever been a challenge to current phonological theories.The present paper argues that the apparent paradox of Tianjin tone sandhi largely comes from the mode of rule application adopted in the classical phonological theories.Within the OT framework,the paper analyzes the tone sandhi of trisyllabic sequences in Tianjin dialect,claiming that the parallelist OT can provide a satisfactory solution to the paradoxical problem of Tianjin tone sandhi.

Abstract:Quantitative linguistics concerns itself with the various language phenomena,language structures,structural properties,and their interrelations in real-life communicative activities.Through various quantitative techniques,it conducts accurate measurement,observation,simulation,modeling and explanation of these phenomena in order to discover the mathematical laws underlying the language phenomena,reveal the intrinsic reasons for these phenomena,and explore the self-adaptive mechanisms of the language system and the dynamics of language evolution.Quantitative linguistics is a typical combination of natural and social sciences,with distinct interdisciplinary characteristics.These characteristics distinguish quantitative linguistics as the branch of linguistics with the best adherence to the paradigm of modern science.The language laws it discovers contribute to more accurate description and explanation of relevant language phenomena and are vitally important and necessary for the establishment of a type of linguistic theory in the modern scientific sense.As an empirical discipline based on authentic language data,the mode of thinking and research methodology practiced in quantitative linguistics are generally in line with those in other empirical disciplines.The most representative accomplishments of quantitative linguistics are the various language laws concerning the structure and evolution of human languages,which constitute the basis of relevant theories.Synergetic linguistics,an outcome of the application of synergetics to linguistic studies,marks a more advanced stage of the development of quantitative linguistics.Under the theoretical framework of synergetic linguistics,we can integrate the separated language laws into a linguistic theory with greater explanatory capacity.An attempt to solve the equilibrium between various language-related demands in communication,synergetic linguistics is the instantiation and modernization of Zipf's least effort principle.In the foreseeable future,researchers in quantitative linguistics around the world are expected to conduct in-depth studies along the following lines of research:(1)the mechanisms and laws governing how words form sentences;(2)the search for more universal syntactic formalisms for the sake of cross-linguistic verification of various syntactic rules;(3)the synergetic relations between different levels of human languages,with focus placed on syntax;(4)the application of various new methods to more efficient and systematic exploration of the rules governing the structure and evolution of human languages;(5)attempts at applying quantitative facts of syntax to syntactic analysis based on authentic language data;(6)the relationships between quantitative facts of syntax and cognitive processing of sentences;(7)the search for synergetic linguistic models more compatible with empirical facts of cognitive processing of language;(8)the construction of more explanatorily adequate lexical-syntactic synergetic models;and so forth.These issues not only reflect the gaps in the current body of quantitative linguistic research but also indicate possible directions for future research.
Coevolution of structural variation and optimization in sound systems of human language

Abstract:Evolution of sound systems of human language is an optimization process to improve communicative effectiveness: The intrinsic structures of sound systems are constantly organized with respect to constraints in speech production and perception. However, there lack sufficient quantitative descriptions of this process, large-scale investigations on universal tendencies in sound systems, and explicit evidence on whether demographic and/or geographic factors can influence linguistic typology of sound systems. Here, we proposed two composite parameters, namely structural variation and optimization, to capture linguistic typology of sound systems, vowel systems in particular. Synchronic comparisons based on a large-scale vowel corpus of world languages revealed a universal negative correlation between the two parameters. Phylogenetic comparative analyses identified a correlated evolution of the two, but with distinct evolutionary modes: a gradual evolution of the structural variation and a punctuated equilibrium of the optimization. Mixed-effect models also reported significant effects of speaker population size and longitude on shaping vowel systems of world languages. All these findings elaborate the intrinsic evolutionary mechanism of sound systems, clarify the extrinsic, non-linguistic effects on shaping human sound systems, and quantitatively describe and interpret the evolution and typology of sound systems.
A Study on the Evolution of the Verbal Syntactic Valence Based on Corpus

Abstract:The paper aims at studying the evolution process of the syntactic valence of verbs. In the study, three corpuses, i.e. the corpus of ancient classical Chinese,the corpus of ancient vernacular and the corpus of modern vernacular, are constructed. We selected ten main verbs as the objects of the research, and suggested some methods of sample sentence selecting and analyzing. The complements and modifications of the verbs are analyzed in this paper. It reveals that Chinese grammer changes gradually. The ancient classical Chinese and the ancient vernacular are more similar in sentence structures. After the transformation from the ancient vernacular to the modern vernacular, the complexity of Chinese sentences is increased sharply, indicating that Chinese sentence structures have changed greatly after the transformation from ancient vernacular to modern vernacular.

Abstract:Contemporary literary theory study presents two basic trends of "entad turn" and "extendable turn".These two trends have deep connection with the linguistic turn of western philosophy in the 20th century that caused two profound changes of language concept.The first change was from the natural language notion to arbitrariness of the sign,and the second one was from the logical language notion to the aesthetic one.The former caused combination of the poetics and the linguistics,and the latter caused intercross of the literary theory and the cultural theory.These two trends are also enlightening for the contemporary literary study.There are still some limits in them when they were separated.We should seek the valid combination of the linguistic study and the cultural study by reflecting on the two trends deeply.

Abstract:This paper explores the application of functional equivalence theory in enhancing bilingual sports commentary, with a focus on Chinese and English languages. By analyzing commentary from various sports events, including the F1 British Grand Prix, NBA games, FIFA World Cup matches, and League of Legends World Championships, the study identifies key differences and areas for improvement in both language commentaries. Chinese commentary often suffers from clarity issues due to excessive commentators and informal language, while English commentary lacks cultural and idiomatic richness. The research demonstrates that integrating functional equivalence theory can significantly improve the quality of sports commentary by ensuring that it is culturally and linguistically tailored to the audience's experience. This approach not only provides a richer viewer experience but also bridges the gap between different linguistic audiences, maintaining the excitement and context of the sports event.

Abstract:In recent years, with the continuous development of the society, the boom of global Chinese learning has flourished. The teaching and research of Chinese as a foreign language has received much attention. In order to explore the effective teaching methods in oral Chinese, to stimulate foreign students’ love of learning Chinese, and to increase their interest and motivation in learning Chinese, a new teaching model-BOPPPS teaching model emerges and is widely welcomed by the students. The author explores how to apply the BOPPPS model in teaching of oral Chinese as a foreign language, providing a new teaching method in oral Chinese teaching. The study finds that the BOPPPS model can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the oral Chinese teaching, mobilize international students’ enthusiasm for learning Chinese and improve their academic performance, make teachers more clear about the teaching purpose and requirements, and help the students be more clear about the learning goals.

Abstract:In this paper, by briefly reviewing the keynote speeches and pre-conference workshops of Evolang10, we revisited the flourishing development of evolutionary linguistics in the past two decades, and gave three comments on Evolang conference series, including: (a) reconsideration of the repulsive attitude toward historical linguistics research; (b) future directions of modeling and experimental studies; and (c) necessity of pragmatics and neuroscience explorations in evolutionary linguistics. In the end, we summarized the key contributions from Chinese scholars to evolutionary linguistics, rich linguistic resources in China, possible facets where Chinese scholars can make significant contributions, and current status of evolutionary linguistics research in China. We welcome and encourage more Chinese scholars to step into evolutionary linguistics and make our contributions to this booming field.

Abstract:Discourse analysis emerged in America in the middle of the 20~(th)century.It was introduced to China in 1970s.Up to now,discourse studies have been extended to many academic fields such as discourse linguistics,philosophy,politics,sociology,literature,communication, culture,history,natural science,etc.The object and scope of contemporary discourse studies are developing continually.On the micro-side,it has extended from discourse itself to psychological mechanism of discourse generation and man-machine conversation.On the macro-side,it has extended from discourse itself to discourse community,discourse participator,discourse ability, discourse right,discourse culture,discourse order and etc.In the near future,discourse studies in China will take on an inter-disciplinary trend.Discourse studies in different disciplines from multiple angles of view would be conformed and inosculated.A new integrative and inter- discipline named"discourseology"will come into being.A new major and department of discourse studies will finally be established.

Language Expression Skills and Optimization Strategies in Chinese-English Translation

Abstract:: Chinese-English translation is a crucial part of cross-cultural communication. How to accurately convey the meaning of the original text and maintain the natural fluency of the language is a key problem to be solved in the process of translation. This paper discusses and summarizes the Chinese and English translation from two aspects of language expression techniques and optimization strategies. This paper discusses the application of language expression skills in Chinese and English translation, such as grammar structure, vocabulary selection, sentence conversion and so on. By comparing and analyzing the characteristics of both Chinese and English languages, the unique features of each language, and the targeted use of corresponding expression skills can better maintain the style and artistic conception of the original text. When translating idioms and expressions, it is important to consider regional culture and customs to ensure that the translation aligns with local language habits and expression methods. Effective Chinese-English translation optimization strategies should be implemented, such as avoiding literal translation, paying attention to context adaptation, and considering rhetorical effect, in order to achieve a translation that is more accurate and closer to the original meaning.

Abstract:This paper re-investigates a lexical acquisition system initially developed for French.We show that, interestingly, the architecture of the system reproduces and implements the main components of Optimality Theory. However, we formulate the hypothesis that some of its limitations are mainly due to a poor representation of the constraints used. Finally, we show how a better representation of the constraints used would yield better results.

Abstract:As a comparatively new field of psycholinguistic research,studies on Chinese language production have limitations both in the scope of research topics and in research methodology.Some researchers took advantage of the unique linguistic properties of the Chinese language to shed light on the mechanism of language production at the stage of conceptualization and grammatical encoding.Most researchers employed the syntactic priming paradigm to explore the extent to which bilinguals share syntactic representations between two languages.Further studies are called for to inform the nature of syntactic priming.Potential interesting areas of studies on Chinese language production include the integration of word production and sentence production models,and bilingual sentence production with Chinese as L1/L2.The advancement in these areas should be based on the development of research tools.
