Abstract:In the early 1990's,the Theory of "Markedness" was introduced to China and has been utilized more frequently to research on Chinese grammar.Two concepts should be differentiated from each other clearly when this theory is employed: the "markedness" does not mean "asymmetrical phenomena".The main difference is that "markedness" requires an element which occupies a dominant position in frequency of utilization and distribution of syntax."markedness" is also different from "pro forma mark",the former is a phenomenon while the latter is a concrete word or structure.

Abstract:This article aims to unravel the continuous development of a pragmatic turn in the interpretation and reasoning of court judgments through reviewing the studies on court judgments at lexico-grammatical level and discourse level. Moreover, as one type of legal instruments, the court judgments are of semiotic feature, that is, the feature of temporality and spatiality and need to be interpreted and understood in particular contexts as well as under specific historical and legal backgrounds.

Adaptation theory describes and analyses language cognitively, socially and culturally. According to this perspective on language and adaptation theory, four aspects are of great importance: context, structure, dynamics and salience. Abstract:This paper attempts to analyse the interdependence between generative syntactic theory and pragmatic studies .Three types of meaning are put under study:the contextual anchoring of the indexical ele-ments, the expansion of propositions , and conversational implicature .It is argued that the notion of Conceptual-Intentional Interface articulated in generative syntax offers an account of why the linguistically en -coded meaning can be taken as the basis for the pragmatic inference yielding the expansion of propositions and implicature .The operations of extended functional projection and feature valuation serve as the underlying mechanism that enables the contextual anchoring of the indexical elements .

Abstract:Markedness of both linguistic and cognitive categories are considered to be two of the constraints on L1 transfer. Linguistic theory of markedness suggests that the relative markedness of L1 and L2 features can be used to predict the areas of L2 difficulty and L1 transfer. Cognitive theory of markedness,on the other hand,claims that learners' understanding of the transferability of L1 features is based on their perception of the prototypicality of those features rather than the markedness itself. Markedness-based theories of L1 transfer are enlightening to us in our reconsideration of L1's role,studies on the Chinese-L2 differences,L2 teaching and the like.

Abstract:Based on Jenny Thomas’s dichotomous classification of pragmatic failure, this study proposes a new perspective and classifies pragmatic failure in interpretation into three categories: pragma-linguistic failure, socio-pragmatic failure and malaprop-pragmatic failure. Specific examples are given to illustrate the causes and effects of each category of pragmatic failure in interpretation. Meanwhile, this study establishes the “curriculum-textbook-teacher-teaching” scheme to develop students’ pragmatic competence in interpreting with which they are able to avoid pragmatic failure in interpretation.

Abstract:Since the debut of the speech act theory, the classification standards of speech acts have been in dispute. Traditional abstract taxonomies seem insufficient to meet the needs of artificial intelligence for identifying and even understanding speech acts. To facilitate the automatic identification of the communicative intentions in human dialogs, scholars have tried some data-driven methods based on speech-act annotated corpora. However, few studies have objectively evaluated those classification schemes. In this regard, the current study applied the frequencies of the eleven discourse markers ( oh, well, and, but, or, so, because, now, then, I mean , and you know ) proposed by Schiffrin [ 24 ] to investigate whether they can be effective indicators of speech act variations. The results showed that the five speech acts of Agreement can be well classified in terms of their functions by the frequencies of discourse markers. Moreover, it was found that the discourse markers well and oh are rather efficacious in differentiating distinct speech acts. This paper indicates that quantitative indexes can reflect the characteristics of human speech acts, and more objective and data-based classification schemes might be achieved based on these metrics.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis paper focuses on Marked Theme in spoken Chinese. Previous studies have explored the functions of Marked Themes within clauses, but not many researchers have observed this phenomenon from a discourse semantics perspective. Combining the framework of discourse semantics with the use of corpus study, this paper first explores the occurrence of such structures in conversations and then examines their discourse functions. Data from the corpus show that, in line with findings from corpus studies of written texts, the occurrence of Marked Themes is quite low. The inspection of their discourse functions leads to the following preliminary findings: (1) in sequences of activities, Marked Themes often function as lexical cohesive devices to build up taxonomical relations across utterances; (2) from the view point of identification, Marked Themes function as anaphoric devices to help keep track of the Participants in question; (3) from the viewpoint of periodicity, while most Marked Themes convey given information, especially contrastive information, a considerable amount of Marked Themes function as HyperTheme to start new phases of discourse.

Abstract:Pragmatic perspective theory,first proposed by the Belgium scholar Jeff Verschueren,is based on Darwin's theory of evolution.It aims to establish a unified and coherent theoretical framework to explain the fact that people are constantly making choices when using language.Seen from a pragmatic perspective,the use of metaphor is also a process of constant choice making.Through the introduction of three key related concepts of variability,negotiability and adaptability,we are better equipped to explain the production and interpretation of metaphor-the production of metaphor is a process of speaker seeking source domain based on similarity and of making adaptable judgments of the source domain in terms of its optimal relevance to the individual;and the interpretation of metaphor also requires variability,negotiability and adaptability,because the listener has to choose the optimally context-adaptive semantic interpretation.When applied to analyse specific metaphorical utterances,the pragmatic perspective would bring new insights into ″how people use metaphors″.

Abstract:The paper discusses the theory of relevance, advanced in the middle of the 1980s by Dan Sperber and Deidra Wilson, in the context of opposition between the proponents of “ideal language philosophy”, or formal semantics, and adherents of “ordinary language philosophy”. Though the theory was created as a version of cognitive pragmatics, an area at the junction of cognitive sciences and theoretical linguistics, it is of undoubted interest for philosophical comprehension of language, verbal communication, and the nature of meaning. Treating verbal communication as a cognitive process, Sperber and Wilson formulate the two most important principles underlying the process – the cognitive principle of relevance and the communicative principle of relevance. The paper explains the basic notions of the theory – ostensive communication, informative and communicative intentions, optimal relevance, explicature; it reveals the advantages that the authors of the theory see in the “inferential” model of communication over the “code” model and discusses how they present the process of understanding a speaker’s utterance by a hearer on the “implicit” and “explicit” levels and what role in the process they ascribe to pragmatic inferences. The account of the relevance theory is accompanied by its comparison with the picture of verbal communication elaborated by Paul Grice, and it is shown that though Sperber and Wilson make a start from Grice’s ideas in many respects, they introduce significant alterations and so they are regarded as representatives of post-Gricean pragmatics. In conclusion, it is examined how, according to the relevance theory, the semantics/pragmatics distinction should be drawn. It is discussed how the proposed decision alters the understanding of the nature of meaning and what consequences it has for philosophy.

Abstract:Work in the last two decades on semantics and pragmatics has given rise to a multitude of different positions on where to draw the distinction between them, whether such a distinction can be drawn at all, and to what extent, if any, pragmatics contributes to semantic content. I outline the relevance-theoretic view that the semantics-pragmatics distinction corresponds to the distinction between linguistically encoded and pragmatically provided meaning, and the reasons for the rejection of any intermediate level of semantic content such as a minimal proposition. In the second part of the paper, I survey a range of recent frameworks (indexicalism; certain versions of minimalism) that potentially avoid those objections, and consider whether these approaches motivate the need for some variety of semantic content as a psychologically real or theoretically valid level of representation distinct from encoded meaning and explicit utterance content.

Abstract:New types of irreducible second order Darboux transformations for the one dimensional Schroedinger equation are described. The main feature of such transformations is that the transformation functions have the eigenvalues grater then the ground state energy of the initial (or reference) Hamiltonian. When such a transformation is presented as a chain of two first order transformations, an intermediate potential is singular and therefore intermediate Hamiltonian can not be Hermitian while the final potential is regular and the final Hamiltonian is Hermitian. Second derivative supersymmetric quantum mechanical model based on a transformation of this kind exhibits properties inherent to models with exact and broken supersymmetry at once.

Abstract:Pragmatic ambivalence refers to a linguistic phenomenon in which the communicator uses vague or ambiguous words to convey the illocutionary force to the other party in a specific context. It is an indispensable communicative strategy for successful communication in daily communication activities. Relevance theory can explain pragmatic ambivalence from three aspects: intentional relevance, contextual relevance and relevance reasoning. Therefore, relevance theory has strong explanatory power and applicability for pragmatic ambivalence as a communicative strategy. Using relevance theory to study pragmatic ambivalence is conducive to people’s further understanding of pragmatic ambivalence as a linguistic phenomenon, and has a very positive significance for the research and development of ambivalence in pragmatics.
An Adaptation Theory-based Analysis of Pragmatic Presupposition in Chinese Advertising Discourse

Abstract:Pragmatic presupposition,as a pragmatic strategy of speech acts,has attracted great attention of many scholars who conducted their research from different viewpoints like logic and linguistics.After reviewing the past research from the above viewpoints and pointing out their achievements and limitations,this paper attempts to apply Verschueren's adaptation theory to pragmatic presupposition as a pragmatic strategy of speech acts.The author concludes that pragmatic presuppositions in Chinese advertising discourse are actually the outcomes of linguistic choices interadaptable with language users' mental world,social world and physical world.

Abstract:Chen (2009) attempts to explicate the notion of referentiality by examining three aspects, namely semantic, pragmatic and discourse thematic. We show that there are inadequacies in Chen's characterization of referentiality, in particular pragmatic referentiality, in that he seems to mostly have in mind definite expressions with definite reference when he sets up the criteria for the status of pragmatically referential expressions. We argue that none of his alleged three components of pragmatic referentiality holds, by demonstrating that for a linguistic expression to be pragmatically referential, the existence of the intended referent does not necessarily have to be presupposed; nor does it have to be uniquely identifiable; nor does it have to be made specific in the first place.
