Abstract:In the early 1990's,the Theory of "Markedness" was introduced to China and has been utilized more frequently to research on Chinese grammar.Two concepts should be differentiated from each other clearly when this theory is employed: the "markedness" does not mean "asymmetrical phenomena".The main difference is that "markedness" requires an element which occupies a dominant position in frequency of utilization and distribution of syntax."markedness" is also different from "pro forma mark",the former is a phenomenon while the latter is a concrete word or structure.

Abstract:Markedness of both linguistic and cognitive categories are considered to be two of the constraints on L1 transfer. Linguistic theory of markedness suggests that the relative markedness of L1 and L2 features can be used to predict the areas of L2 difficulty and L1 transfer. Cognitive theory of markedness,on the other hand,claims that learners' understanding of the transferability of L1 features is based on their perception of the prototypicality of those features rather than the markedness itself. Markedness-based theories of L1 transfer are enlightening to us in our reconsideration of L1's role,studies on the Chinese-L2 differences,L2 teaching and the like.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis paper focuses on Marked Theme in spoken Chinese. Previous studies have explored the functions of Marked Themes within clauses, but not many researchers have observed this phenomenon from a discourse semantics perspective. Combining the framework of discourse semantics with the use of corpus study, this paper first explores the occurrence of such structures in conversations and then examines their discourse functions. Data from the corpus show that, in line with findings from corpus studies of written texts, the occurrence of Marked Themes is quite low. The inspection of their discourse functions leads to the following preliminary findings: (1) in sequences of activities, Marked Themes often function as lexical cohesive devices to build up taxonomical relations across utterances; (2) from the view point of identification, Marked Themes function as anaphoric devices to help keep track of the Participants in question; (3) from the viewpoint of periodicity, while most Marked Themes convey given information, especially contrastive information, a considerable amount of Marked Themes function as HyperTheme to start new phases of discourse.

Abstract:Markedness is a major subject of cultural semiotics.The marked is of stylistic characteristics,but the causality must be clearly argued whether style is the reason for markedness or being marked results in style.The article,exemplified by songs,clarifies that the lyrics of songs lose the referential function of "normal" language as well as semantic function because of stylistic prescriptiveness.It is evident that the styles of songs lead to markedness of songs,which is a typical causal relation between style and markedness.

Abstract:Since the debut of the speech act theory, the classification standards of speech acts have been in dispute. Traditional abstract taxonomies seem insufficient to meet the needs of artificial intelligence for identifying and even understanding speech acts. To facilitate the automatic identification of the communicative intentions in human dialogs, scholars have tried some data-driven methods based on speech-act annotated corpora. However, few studies have objectively evaluated those classification schemes. In this regard, the current study applied the frequencies of the eleven discourse markers ( oh, well, and, but, or, so, because, now, then, I mean , and you know ) proposed by Schiffrin [ 24 ] to investigate whether they can be effective indicators of speech act variations. The results showed that the five speech acts of Agreement can be well classified in terms of their functions by the frequencies of discourse markers. Moreover, it was found that the discourse markers well and oh are rather efficacious in differentiating distinct speech acts. This paper indicates that quantitative indexes can reflect the characteristics of human speech acts, and more objective and data-based classification schemes might be achieved based on these metrics.
Markedness reversal:The iconicity of prosody and syntax in Chinese

Abstract:Markedness reversal is defined in this paper as a reversal of a particular feature between a category and a subcategory under that category.In Mandarin Chinese the mono-vs.di-syllable distinction and the related [2+1] vs.[1+2] distinction in syllable alignment determines to a large degree the differentiation of two major syntactic relations,attributive-noun and verb-object.This kind of prosodic distinction is actually a morpho-syntactic means characteristic of the Chinese language which lacks inflectional morphology of the Indo-European languages.The fact is explained by markedness reversal,motivated by the iconicity of tightness and quantity between prosodic structures and syntactic relations,because in Chinese verbs constitute a subcategory in the noun category and adjectives a subcategory in the verb category.The related markedness reversal also sheds light on the characteristics of Chinese in its word class system.Typologically,in addition to the fact that Chinese adjectives behave more like verbs,more importantly,the primary distinction of word classes in Chinese is between depictives and non-depictives,the former includ～ing reduplicative forms of nouns,verbs and adjectives.
The Method of Chinese Marked with Pinyin with Tonality

Abstract:As there is polyphony in Chinese characters,it is surely difficult for us to mark with pinyin with tonality.The method is designed to solve the problem by combining character with word.Firstly,the dictionary of Pinyin with tonality and the lexicon with Pinyin were created.The Pinyin of polyphone in the dictionary was arrayed by the used frequency,and the dictionary of Pinyin was indexed according to the last character of word.Secondly,the improved reverse maximum matching algorithm based on the two lay indexing structure based binary-seek-by-word was implemented.Finally,three experimental schemes were tested,and the results indicated the method makes error rate down from 11% to 0.09%.

Abstract:Abstract Shanghainese is an extremely topic-prominent language with many topic markers in competition with one another, often without any obvious basis for the selection of one topic marker over another. We explore the influence of five variables on the five most frequent topic markers in a corpus of (spoken) Shanghainese: topic length, syntactic category of the topic, function of the topic, comment type, and genre. We carry out a multivariate statistical analysis of the data, relying on a polytomous logistic regression model. Our approach leads to a satisfying quantification of the role of each factor, as well as an estimate of the probabilities of combinations of factors, in influencing the choice of topic marker. This study serves simultaneously as an introduction to the polytomous package (Arppe 2013) in the statistical software package R.

Abstract:This study examines the marks' influence on comprehensive understanding of the sentence meaning for deaf students by doing experimental research.The study shows that the marks can effectively improve the deaf students' comprehensive understanding of the sentence meaning.The marks can improve the score of comprehensive understanding of long sentences on the largest scale and the students have the highest scores in understanding the middle length sentences which are marked.And there's interrelationship between the marks and length of the sentences: deaf students can have the highest score in understanding short and middle length sentences which are not marked while the students can have best understanding of middle length sentences while are marked and whether the sentences are marked or not,deaf students have the lowest understanding level of long sentences.

Abstract:The study is an empirical research concerning the role of discourse markers in L2 listening comprehension.It examines how the subjects with different listening proficiency levels comprehend and recall information in free recall task after listening to a lecture with discourse markers or without discourse markers.The data analysis indicates that discourse markers have positive effects in L2 listening comprehension and learners with lower listening proficiency rely more heavily on discourse markers in L2 listening comprehension.

Abstract:The current study investigates whether and how focus, phrase boundary and newness can be simultaneously marked in speech prosody in Mandarin Chinese. Homophones were used to construct three syntactic structures that differed only in boundary condition, focus was elicited by preceding questions, while newness of postboundary words was manipulated as whether they had occurred in the previous text. Systematic analysis of F0 and duration showed that (1) duration was a reliable correlate of boundary strength regardless of focus location, while involvement of F0 was only in terms of lowering of phrase-final F0 minima and raising of phrase-initial F0 minima at a relatively strong boundary, (2) postfocus compression (PFC) of F0 was applied across all boundaries, including those with long silent pauses (over 200 ms), and postfocus F0 was lowered to almost the same degree in all boundary conditions, and (3) newness of postfocus words had no systematic effect on F0 or duration. These results indicate that not only functionally focus is independent of prosodic structure and newness, but also phonetically its realization is separate from boundary marking. Focus is signaled mainly through pitch range adjustments, which can occur even across phrase breaks, whereas boundaries are mostly signaled by duration adjustments.

Abstract:Multi-dimensional Analysis (MD) is a quantitative corpus-based approach which describes and interprets patterns of register variations through factor analysis of a set of linguistic fea-tures across text varieties, and reveals their systematic relationships with communicative purposes. The model has been employed to explore language variation in many languages (e.g., English, Somali, Nukulaelae Tuvaluan, Korean, and Spanish), yet insufficient research has been carried out on register variation in Mandarin Chinese on a full scale. In this research, 88 linguistic features are tagged in a balanced corpus composed of 20 Mandarin Chinese spoken and written registers. Through factor analysis, five dimensions which consist of 65 linguistic features are identified and interpreted from linguistic and functional perspectives. The first two dimensions, interactive vs. informational discourse and narrative vs. non-narrative concern, are similar to dimensions that have been claimed to constitute universal parameters of register variation in previous MD studies. The exist-ence of two potential universal dimensions suggests that the basic communicative purposes and functions underlying the different languages are markedly similar, given the existing social, cultural, and linguistic dissimilarities. Dimension 4, casual real-time speech with stance, is identified as a distinctive dimension in Mandarin Chinese. Dimension 3, explicit-ness in cohesion and reasoning, and Dimension 5, abstract information, are found to be as-sociated with foreign influence, and their register variation patterns illustrate how foreign contact affects Chinese register variation in a quantitative manner.

Abstract:This paper examines the interaction of DOM with information structure in Mandarin Chinese. Despite the large amount of works on this topic, much remains to be explained, in particular with respect to some alternations that do not easily fit the explanations proposed so far in terms of affectedness, animacy and definiteness. Through the analysis of text excerpts taken from the Corpus of Modern Chinese of the Center for Chinese Linguistics (CCL) of Peking University, we argue that, in addition to previously identified constraints, DOM in Mandarin Chinese performs another important function in discourse, namely that of signalling the high identifiability of the marked referent.
