Abstract:In order to facilitate communication, interpreters are required to understand and convey the message of the source speech. Interpreters should also make inferences based on the context. This paper, within the theoretical framework of the Relevance Theory, attempts to explore the pragmatic inference in interpreting. Authentic materials are analyzed from two aspects, i.e. the linguistic context and non-linguistic context. The analyses show that inference is helpful for interpreters to com-prehend the content of the utterance and express the implicit intention of the source speaker.

Abstract:This paper attempts to analyse the interdependence between generative syntactic theory and pragmatic studies .Three types of meaning are put under study:the contextual anchoring of the indexical ele-ments, the expansion of propositions , and conversational implicature .It is argued that the notion of Conceptual-Intentional Interface articulated in generative syntax offers an account of why the linguistically en -coded meaning can be taken as the basis for the pragmatic inference yielding the expansion of propositions and implicature .The operations of extended functional projection and feature valuation serve as the underlying mechanism that enables the contextual anchoring of the indexical elements .

Abstract:This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book expresses that with respect to the semantic/pragmatic border war, the key issue of formulating a semantic theory of quotation is to characterize the semantic content of quotation. It discusses some theoretical and philosophical implications. The book is based on two frameworks of academic analysis. One pertains to the semantic theory in general and the other is related to the semantic account of quotation. It elaborates on the perception of quotation as both representational and metarepresentational. It establishes a semantic theory that gives a unitary characterization of open and closed quotations, which is achieved by developing the narrowly defined sense of use and mention into two dimensions that together shape the semantic profile of quotation. From principles to practices: the intertextual interaction between AI ethical and legal discourses

Abstract:The ascendancy and ubiquity of generative AI technology, exemplified by ChatGPT, has resulted in a transformative shift in the conventional human–AI interaction paradigm, leading to substantial alterations in societal modes of production. Drawing on CDA approach, this study conducts a thematic intertextuality analysis of 29 AI ethical documents, and delves into the restructuring of the human–AI relations catalysed by ChatGPT, as well as the complex ethical and legal challenges it presents. The findings indicate that the thematic intertextuality between AI ethical discourse and legal discourse promotes the connection and convergence of narrative-ideological structures, which in turn primarily creates new meaningful texts and ethical frameworks that promote a holistic approach to a good AI society. This research also identifies the importance of integrating law-making efforts with substantive ethical analysis and appropriate discursive strategies to promote the responsible and ethical development of generative AI that benefits society as a whole.

Abstract:This Element addresses translation issues within an interpersonal pragmatics frame. The aims of this Element are twofold: first, we survey the current state of the field of pragmatics in translation; second, we present the current and methodologically innovative avenues of research in the field. We focus on three pragmatics issues – relational work, participation structure, and mediality – that we foreground as promising loci of research on translational data. By reviewing the trajectory of pragmatics research on translation/interpreting over time, and then outlining our understanding of the Pragmatics in Translation as a field, we arrive at a set of potential research questions which represent desiderata for future research. These questions identify the paths that can be productively explored through synergies of the linguistic pragmatics framework and translation data. In two case study chapters, we offer two example studies addressing some of the questions we identified as suggestions for future research. The pragmatic perspective specifies pragmatics as a general cognitive, social, and cultural perspective on linguistic phenomena in relation to their usage in forms of behavior. Adaptation theory describes and analyses language cognitively, socially and culturally. According to this perspective on language and adaptation theory, four aspects are of great importance: context, structure, dynamics and salience. Thus, this article has been intended to probe into the pragmatic perspective briefly.

Abstract:Law and language are closely related. In the second half of 20th century, with the development of philosophy research, western law research experienced linguistic turn. School of analytical jurisprudence, school of new rhetoric jurisprudence, school of legal interpretation, school of structural semiotic jurisprudence and so on appeared successively. Their research paradigms of cross-discipline and multiple-direction have questioned, deconstructed and reconstructed law linguistic views of traditional jurisprudence, brought forth radical change for the development of modern jurisprudence, and embodied the trend of current science research. The law research should use them for reference and absorb them.

Abstract:Tolerance has been studied and critiqued extensively in moral and political philosophy. By contrast, we know relatively little about the salience of tolerance to <em>law</em>. In this article, I aim to fill that gap in our knowledge by laying the conceptual groundwork for a pragmatic case for legal tolerance. The article's core arguments are that (i) lawmakers often engage in legal tolerance of contested beliefs, opinions and practices, and (ii) they tend to do so for pragmatic reasons. In building the pragmatic case for legal tolerance, I discuss legal responses in a wide array of jurisdictions and to a broad range of contested moral issues. I also unpack the implications of legal tolerance by analysing its (in)stability and its relationship to state communicative power. I conclude the article by indicating some potential limits of pragmatic legal tolerance.

Abstract:Abstract This article discusses the interpretation of the English present perfect adopting a pragmatic approach. I show that a full interpretation of the English present perfect requires identification of the nature of current relevance, or, within a perfect state account (e.g., Nishiyama and Koenig 2010), value-assignment for a present state. I argue that the specific value of the present state is either an explicature or an implicature of the utterance containing the present perfect. The difference between such interpretations as continuative, resultative and experiential perfects, on a pragmatic level, lies in the content of the explicatures they express. I further argue that this process of value-assignment should be understood in light of the relevance-theoretic account of communication (Sperber and Wilson 1995 [1986]; Wilson and Sperber 2002, 2004). It entails, on the part of the speaker, communication of a particular proposition which is most relevant to the discourse topic and, on the part of the addressee, identification of a particular proposition which is sufficiently relevant to the discourse topic. On this view, several seemingly unrelated “puzzles” of the English present perfect amount to violations of a general pragmatic principle of optimal relevance, instead of independently motivated principles.

Abstract:In recent years there has been a noticeable yet largely unacknowledged 'pragmatic turn' in the scientific realism debate, inspired in part by van Fraassen's work on 'epistemic stances'. Features of this new approach include: an ascent to the meta-level (the focus is not so much on whether scientific realism is true, but on the prior questions of the nature of the positions in this debate, how to decide whether to be a scientific realist, etc.); a reinterpretation of scientific realism and anti-realism as (or as closely associated with) stances or frameworks, rather than theories or beliefs; a move away from the previously dominant empirical-explanatory (i.e. quasi-scientific or naturalistic) conception of scientific realism, anti-realism, and their justification; and a stress on the pragmatic and values-based elements in the debate. The traditional scientific realism debate is concerned with determining which position is true, or most epistemically justified. The new approach by contrast is concerned with determining which position best serves certain values, e.g. is most useful, fruitful, or otherwise prudentially preferable. In this paper we try to bring together the various strands in this new orientation, summarise its key features, contrast it with superficially similar but opposing views, and explore the similarities and differences among some of its adherents. Given we are advocates of the turn, we also offer a defence of the value and fruitfulness of this reconceptualization of the debate.

Abstract:on—namely, those who come from structuralist strands in the social sciences (e.g., functional linguistics, conversation analysis, and interactional sociolinguistics), such as Halliday, Schegloff, Goffman. Others, who have to be understood from within a poststructuralist, philosophical, or historical perspective, such as Wittgenstein, Bakhtin, Vygotsky, and Bourdieu, are more diffi cult to expand upon. These authors’ contribution to the fi eld is of crucial importance but diffi cult to grasp through postreading exercises—for example, “Bakhtin was a Russian philosopher, literary critic and scholar who wrote infl uential works of literary and rhetorical theory and criticism. Find out as much as you can about Bakhtin’s theories” (p. 188). The risk of reductionism is inherent in any such textbook, but it is especially present in books like this one—that rightly want to go beyond the social interactionism of the 1970s and 1980s into a more constructivist, poststructuralist view of discourse and social reality but have to do so within the constraints of the structuralist textbook genre. Given the rise of computer technology and the changing role of language in online interactions, it is to be hoped that the second edition of this book will expand the short notices that deal with virtual communication. As the computer transforms the way research is done and the objects of study are constructed, a book like this one can provide a good basis from which to explore the complex ways in which communication technologies are transforming the relation of language and both online and face-to-face interaction.

Abstract:Abstract In the latter half of the 20th century, with the development of philosophy studies, Western jurisprudence also witnessed a linguistic turn in its field. A series of academic schools appeared consecutively, such as the school of semantic analysis, the school of new rhetoric, the school of legal interpretation, and the school of structural semiotics. Their analytical paradigms, which were skeptical of the views of legal languages in traditional theories of jurisprudence, are interdisciplinary and multidimensional in nature and characteristics. Normally, there are three methods used in the linguistic turn of Western jurisprudence, that is, the method of symbolic restoration, the method of structural and functional analysis, and the method of legal hermeneutics. Promoted by the linguistic turn, two traditions of legal semiotics also developed. One is the legal theory based on Greimasian semiotics, and the other is based on Peircean semiotics. The linguistic turn in jurisprudence still represents a breakthrough and innovation in the paradigm of legal theoretical studies, as it leads to a re-examination of language, which is no longer treated as a tool but as a philosophical afterthought in relation to the human being.
