Abstract:The basic operation principle of universal power quality controller (UPQC) and its two basic system connections are investigated. Combined with the control strategy for the conditioner to stabilize the dc side capacitor voltage, the powers on the two system connections of UPQC, under the same condition of electric power network and load, are analyzed, including the ac and the dc components in the instantaneous power exported by electric power network and the ones consumed by series controller, parallel controller and load. The constitution of the components and their actions are analyzed, too. The conclusion obtained can provide a reference for determining the system connections of UPQC and capacity estination, and it can also be used in engineering application.

Abstract:In high power CPT system, there are high voltage stresses on capacitors, results in safety issue, high cost and power losses. To resolve this problem, a parameter design method is proposed in this paper to optimize all capacitor voltage stresses, including coupler and all compensation capacitors, for LCLC-LC compensated CPT system. Meanwhile, approximately constant voltage output (CV) and Zero phase angle between the input voltage and input current (ZPA) characteristics are realized. To verify this method, a 1-kW design example is given and built, at a dc-dc efficiency of 80.1%

Abstract:For many capacitive power transfer (CPT) systems, load-independent constant current (CC) output characteristics can improve load adaptation of topologies and is main process of charging. Load-independent zero phase angle characteristic can decrease reactive power mostly and improve efficiency. High voltages on four coupling plates are very easy to cause air breakdown and also deteriorated the electromagnetic interference (EMI) issue, which limits the transfer power. In this work, different resonance conditions of CC output with ZPA for LCLC-LC compensated CPT systems are analyzed and the case with minimum parameter constraints is designed. In the proposed system, accurate load-independent ZPA characteristic and minimum voltage stresses on coupler plates can be designed in theory. Besides, the design method of CC output with ZPA and voltage stress optimization is based on gyrator method and can simplify the complexity of analysis.

Abstract:Aiming at the actuality that the extensive application of power electronics results in serious harmonic pollution and aeronautical power supplies demand on high reliability,the passive three-phase power factor correction have been applied in the aeronautical power supplies.There are two methods of the passive three-phase power factor correction:the first one is that the filter capacitors and inductors are applied in the input-end of alternating current,and the second one is that the filter capacitors and inductors are applied in the output-end of three-phase rectifier.The advantages and drawbacks of the two methods of the passive three-phase power factor correction aer concluded in this paper through simulation and analysis and verified by experiment.To reduce the voltage stress of power switching transistors,the second method of power factor correction was applied in aeronautical power supply.

Abstract:While 99% efficiency has been reported, the target of 20 years of service time imposes new challenge to cost-effective solutions for grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverters. Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are the weak-link in terms of reliability and lifetime in single-phase PV systems. A reliability-oriented design guideline is proposed in this paper for the input capacitors in single-phase transformer-less PV inverters. The guideline ensures that the service time requirement is to be accomplished under different power levels and ambient temperature profiles. The theoretical analysis has been demonstrated by a 1 kW single-phase PV inverter.

Abstract:Reactive power supply can be chosen for parallel active power tilter (PAPF) as two different compensation targets.Since the interrelationship between these two different compensation targets has not been deeply analyzed,the PAPF based on P-Q instantaneous power theory with mathematic derivation is studied,mathematic model of key points is established and the conclusion is drawn.The P-Q control theory could be regarded as a composite control with the feedforward of current and the feedback of DC link voltage.The feedforward currents could be different in these two different compensation targets.Finally,simulation and experimental results prove the validity of the analysis.

Abstract:In traditional high-voltage direct current systems, alternating current system faults can lead to commutation failures, which may further induce the blocking of converters. After the faults are cleared, the fast recovery of commutating voltage, as one key factor to avoid converter blocks, is closely related to dynamic voltage support. The dynamic voltage behaviour considering the reactive power characteristic of converters is analysed, where the polynomial approximation is applied to facilitate our studies. Focusing on the synchronous compensator, the transient voltage support ability is analysed, and then the steady state output of synchronous compensators is regarded as a parameter to take parametric analysis. Case studies show that the steady state VAR output of synchronous compensators has influence on the countering of commutation failures, and an optimal allocation can be found by analysing the results in the form of polynomials.

Abstract:Multi-level CHB rectifier with common-duty-ratio control suffers from low power factor in light-load condition, which related to small boost inductance and insufficient gain of current compensator at line-frequency. In order to solve this problem, a practical design method based on proportional resonant compensator is proposed, which can realize the optimization of power factor under light load. Finally, the effectiveness of the design method is verified by experiments, and the light-load power factor of CHB rectifier is increased to 0.95.

Abstract:The hybrid clamped multilevel inverter has been widely applied recently.A new method for choosing the values of the DC-link capacitor and auxiliary capacitors which is based on switching transitions principle is proposed.The traditional way of capacitor choice in the hybrid clamped multilevel topology is mainly depended on engineering experience and estimate.The new method can ensure the system run steadily,and save superabundant resource spend-ing.The feasibility and correctness of this new method is validated by theoretic calculation,simulation and experiments.Furthermore,the proposed method can be easily expanded and applied for other multilevel topologies.

Abstract:The interactions between shunt active power filter (APF) and capacitance load tend to result in stability problems and resonance. The conventional model of a shunt APF is not precise enough to reflect this phenomenon. To address it, this paper proposes a modified shunt APF system model to accurately reflect various stability problems. This paper also studies the mechanism of positive feedback resonance brought by capacitance load and proposes a modified hybrid controller to improve the stable margin of the system, making the shunt APF work stably under different working conditions where there are μF capacitors on the demand side. The correctness and validity of the proposed strategy are verified by simulation analysis and prototype experiments.

Abstract:Power capacitor device is a widely used reactive power compensation equipment in power transmission and distribution system which can easily have internal fault and therefore affects the safe operation of the power system. This paper studies the internal structure of the power capacitor and the possible fault of the internal elements, then establishes a mathematical model, and thus derives a criterion based on the percent change of voltage and current of the power capacitor, judging whether elements in the capacitor have fault or not, besides, this paper also puts forward an improved measure, and at the same time, verifies the criterion in Matlab Simulation.

Abstract:Due to different charging and discharging characteristics of full-bridge submodules and half-bridge submodules in hybrid modular multilevel converters (MMC), capacitor voltage imbalance will occur under boosted ac voltage or reduced dc voltage conditions. To address this issue, the mechanism of capacitor voltage imbalance is carefully studied, with three main factors—modulation index, power angle, and hybridization ratio—summarized and their effect on capacitor voltage imbalance analyzed. Further, a control strategy based on fundamental frequency reactive circulating current injection is proposed to keep the capacitor voltage balanced in the hybrid MMC. The amplitude and phase angle of the injected circulating current are calculated and their influence on the energy fluctuation in the submodules’ capacitors and the semiconductors’ current stress is explored. Experimental results under boosted ac voltage and reduced dc voltage conditions demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:A capacitive adjustable voltage pulsed power supply is developed.The charging circuit consists of the triac voltage regulator,the boost rectifier,and the limited current circuit.The model of charging voltage vs.time is established and the operation of adjustable voltage charging is analyzed.By using coarse-fine control strategy to make one-side approximation to the target voltage,fast,high precise,non-overshotting charging on capacitor can be achieved.Pulsed discharging to the inductive load includes three modes,sine-wave,freewheeling wave and decayed alter wave.The sine-wave pulses can be used in situations requiring for higher repeating frequency.The freewheeling wave pulses can be used in situations requiring for wider pulse width.The decay oscillating wave pulses can be applied in situations such as demagnetization of permanent magnets.The peak value of pulse current is determined by both of the load resistance and inductance.The output power can be raised greatly by reducing the load inductance,which has the minimum value limited by di/dt of the thyristor.The energy feedback of reverse charging voltage on capacitor is the most effective method to increase the efficiency and the repetitive frequency of the power supply.The calculating method for the technical specification of evaluating and using this type of power supply is presented in the practical example.Besides the maximum operating voltage and the maximum stored energy,indexes such as peak output current,peak output power and repetition frequency under the maximum voltage can also be obtained according to the load parameters,and suited operating parameters can be chosen at the given curves.

Abstract:As auxiliary equipment for electric vehicle, on-board charger should have high performance on harmonic, power factor and efficiency. But in high-power application, the traditional PFC technology has many restrictions and defects. Therefore, based on the parallel interleaved technique, we designed a power factor correction system suitable for on-board charger of electric vehicle. Experiment results show that the design can effectively reduce the input current ripple and improve the output voltage ripple frequency and the power factor.

Abstract:In this paper, a control method named hybrid dynamic capacitor is proposed to provide dynamic VAR compensation and suppress resonance between power capacitor and system inductance in power distribution network. This paper explains the theory of hybrid dynamic capacitor and this method benefits by reducing the initial cost, switching loss and less harmonic current. Finally, simulation and experiment results are given to verify the viability and effectiveness of the hybrid dynamic capacitor and its compensation characteristic.

Abstract:In this paper,combining with RC circuit and RLC series circuit,energy efficiency of charging circuit are discussed. Energy efficiency of RC circuit with exponent type voltage supply is analyzed. For RLC series circuit under different response characteristics,energy efficiency is calculated. If response of RLC series circuit is underdamped,energy efficiency can be increased substantially. The discussion is helpful for the teaching of Circuit course.

Abstract:Supercapacitor represents one of the newest innovations in the field of electrical energy storage,but the series connection of supercapacitor of unequal C-values can lead to an unequal share of the cell voltages.So in many applicatons,voltage equalization technique should be used.This paper researches the current voltage equalization methods and porposes a novel voltage equalization circuit.Based on analysing the operation principle,experiment is made with prototype.The experimental results validate the above analysis and disclose the proposed voltage equalization circuit is characterised with rapid euqalization,simple construct and potential application value.
