Abstract:Construction and demolition (C&D) debris contributes a large amount of solid waste generation in China, in which concrete and cement motor are the main contents. To reuse the aggregate and cement paste C&D waste, the concrete rubbles were burned at 750°C, by which the aggregates were separated from the cement paste. The recycled aggregates were reused in fresh concrete and cement mortar, and the pulverized dehydrated cement paste can have reactivity again. By blending Portland cement and pulverized dehydrated cement paste, a new kind of cementing material is obtained. The strength of this cementing material can meet the requirement of lower strength cement. In this way, construction and demolition waste concrete and cement mortar could be recycled and reused for the manufacture of new construction products; less natural resources and fuels are consumed and less green house gases are emitted.

Abstract:Demolition of buildings can generate large amounts of waste concrete, which if used effectively, can help reduce both the extraction of raw materials and carbon emissions. However, the presence of old cement mortar affects the effective use of waste concrete as a recycled fine aggregates. This study aims to remove old mortar adhering to the surface of waste concrete coarse aggregates via thermal-physical treatment. This study involves assessing the thermal-physical treatment technology and comparing the performance of recycled fine aggregates prepared using this technology with that of fully recycled fine aggregates. The results of this study illustrate the effect of the thermal-physical treatment technique on the preparation of recycled fine aggregates from waste concrete and the effect of fully recycled fine aggregates and recycled fine aggregates prepared using this technique on ceramsite concrete. The results revealed that the thermal-physical treatment technology has a positive effect in improving the quality of recycled fine aggregates prepared via the thermal-physical treatment technique. This technique helps to significantly improve the compressive strength, ultrasonic velocity, resistance to sulfate attack, and microstructure of the recycled ceramsite concrete compared with the fully recycled fine aggregate.

A systematic review of factors affecting properties of thermal-activated recycled cement

Abstract:The cement industry is currently faced with the great challenge of reducing its vast carbon footprint toward sustainability. With the findings on the rehydration behaviors of thermal-activated hardened cement paste, cement, the 'glue' of concrete, originally considered a non-renewable resource, now could complete a closed-loop of its whole life cycle. The up-to-date investigations on thermal activation, rehydration kinetics and micro-structure phase development of thermal-activated recycled cement (RC) are summarized in this paper. Factors affecting the fresh properties (water demand and setting time), mechanical properties, volume stability (shrinkage and creep) and durability of RC paste and RC concrete are coherently analyzed. The factors considered include properties of mother concrete (degree of hydration, degree of carbonization, existence of SCMs, inert siliceous fines and fine aggregate powder), thermal activation methods (target temperature, heating rate and cooling rate), grinding method and particle size distribution of RC, and post-processing measures (adding superplasticizers, retarders and SCMs). An optimum method for producing RC from waste hardened cement paste was proposed based on the findings in this study to achieve similar properties as OPC. The findings confirm that RC could provide engineers with a novel and eco-efficient solution for the sustainable development of the construction industry.
Total Recycling of Low-Quality Urban-Fringe Construction and Demolition Waste Towards the Development of Sustainable Cement-Free Pervious Concrete: the Proof of Concept

Abstract:This work presents a proof-of-concept study of recycling low-quality urban-fringe construction and demolition waste for the development of sustainable cement-free pervious concrete. Waste was in-situ collected from a local construction site of urban-fringe in Hangzhou, China, and elaborately analyzed for quality assessment. Ground brick powder was activated by alkali activators at different (Al+Si)/Na ratios to find the optimal mix ratio. Macro waste solids and alkali-activated recycled brick powder were used as the aggregate and binding material, respectively, to achieve total recycling of the waste. The effects of binder-to-aggregate ratio on the engineering performances and multi-scale structures of the cement-free recycled waste pervious concrete were explored. Results showed that the optimized alkali-activated recycled brick powder paste had high compressive strength up to 50 MPa. The cement-free recycled waste previous concrete showed relatively low compressive strength but high water permeability. Microstructural mechanisms in the aspects of pores, skeletons, and matrix-aggregate interactions were discussed. The replacement of cement by alkali-activated brick powder showed substantial economic and environmental benefits. The findings of this work would provide a promising route towards solving the large-scale construction and demolition waste in China.
Research on Mechanical and Shrinkage Characteristics of a Resource-Based Cement Solid-Waste Concrete

Abstract:Recycling of multi-source solid waste is of great benefit to energy conservation and environmental governance. In this paper, a new type of environmental protection concrete for railway accessory facilities was prepared from silicon-manganese slag, steel slag, fly ash and recycled macadam. Seven kinds of concrete with different mix proportions were designed. Through unconfined compressive strength, splitting, drying shrinkage and temperature shrinkage tests, the multivariate changing trends of steel slag content, cement dosage and age on the anti-interference ability of concrete were investigated. The main mechanisms of the development of mechanical and dry shrinkage properties were revealed by the hydration process of 3SR-60. The results show that 3SR-60 had better mechanical strength under the same cement dosage. The temperature shrinkage strain decreased and then increased with the rise of the proportion of waste residue, increased with the addition of cement dosage and decreased first and then increased with the descent in the temperature. The temperature shrinkage coefficient reached the lowest value at 0–10 °C. The drying shrinkage coefficient decreases with the increase in the proportion of waste residue and increases with the increase in cement dosage. The dry shrinkage strain increased rapidly during the first 8 days and became almost constant after 30 days. Cementation of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) and ettringite (AFt) developed continuously and filled the internal pores of the structure, interlocking and cementing with each other, which made the microstructure develop from a three-dimensional network to a dense complex, and the macro dimension was reflected in the enhancement of the power to resist external interference. The conclusion of the test summarized that SR-60 had preferable mechanical and shrinkage performance.

Abstract:There are many studies on the application of raw diatomite. Still, there are few studies on using waste diatomite to partially replace cement in concrete, especially in the literature regarding mechanical properties and heat insulation. As such, many waste diatomaceous earths are buried yearly. This study used recycled diatomite to replace part of the cement (10%, 15%, 20%, 30%, 40%) to make mixed cement mortar. Various tests were performed to determine its properties and thermal insulation benefits. According to the results of multiple tests, the amount of replacement diatomite increases the amount of mixing water and setting time. The weight loss and shrinkage rates of the freeze-thaw cycles also increased. However, its water absorption and thermal conductivity decreased. Regarding compressive strength, 10% diatomite substitution had higher strength at 28 days, but 20% diatomite substitution had higher strength at 90 days. The volume change did not exceed the 0.1% critical value specified in ASTM standards. These findings indicate that the most potential results (in terms of mechanical and thermal insulation performance) can be obtained in blends with 20% waste diatomite from the brewing industry.

Abstract:In this paper,the compressive strength and thermal properties including thermal productivity,volume heat capacity and thermal expansion coefficient of a new cementitious thermal storage material-aluminate cement hydration with different water/cement ratio curing for 7 d were studied.XRD,FTIR and TG/DTA were used to characterize the evolution of hydration products.The results show that compressive strength and thermal productivity are decreasing along with the increase of water/cement.Partly decomposing of the products after heat treatment is the main cause resulting in decreasing of compressive strength,thermal conductivity and volume heat capacity.

Abstract:Research on the mechanism of carbon thin film (CTF) is a hot issue in the field of concrete materials and is of great significance to the temperature control and crack prevention of concrete structures, but little research has been conducted regarding this issue. In this paper, the composition of CTF and its influence on cement hydration, concrete temperature and strength are studied in the context of the Wudongde (WDD) dam project. Through observations of hand specimens, rock slice identification and X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis, it was shown that the CTF has the same chemical composition as the limestone component, except for the presence of low-crystalline graphite. Based on hydration testing using TAM Air, it was found that CTF promotes the dissolution of cement and the hydration of C3A in the very early stage but exerts a lowering effect on the second exothermic peak of cement hydration. In addition, the greater the CTF content, the greater the hydration heat release. According to temperature measurements of the Wudongde (WDD) dam, CTF could promote an increase in the maximum temperature of concrete blocks. Finally, compressive strength analysis revealed that the content of CTF was proportional to the compressive strength of concrete specimens and provides a reference for the effect of CTF on the performance of low-heat cement concrete.

Abstract:Concrete has been a common building material widely used for decades to build the infrastructure. As a results, considerable amount of waste concrete is produced which is hazardous to the environment. At present, recycling waste concrete is limited to the aggregates for non-structural applications. The low reactivity of waste concrete powder (WCP) limits its use as a binder. Therefore, this study is conducted to enhance the reactivity of WCP to increase its viability as an alkali activated binder. The study was conducted in two phases. In Phase I, the WCP was thermally treated at temperatures ranging between 600 °C and 800 °C and the impact of this calcination on the physiochemical characteristics of thermally treated waste concrete powder (TWCP) was studied. The phase transformation after calcination was analyzed by observing the properties of WCP and TWCP using scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. The physical changes were also studied by comparing the density, specific surface area and particle size distribution in WCP and TWCP. It was found that the thermal treatment of WCP resulted in the decomposition of several phases along with a change in quartz structure. Also with temperature increase, the increase in density and particles fineness was observed, which was significant when thermal treatment was performed at 800 °C. The alkali activated WCP and TWCP was prepared to explore the microstructure and strength. The reactivity and strength of TWCP was superior to that of WCP. However, the highest strength obtained after alkali activation of TWCP was less than 10 MPa which is not optimal for a primary binder. Therefore, in Phase II of this study, the performance of TWCP in a binary cement-based mortar was explored by blending it with 0–50 wt% ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) and the series of experiments including compressive strength , flexural strength and drying shrinkage was carried out to characterize the properties of composites. The superior strength and improved drying shrinkage obtained by mortars comprising TWCP-800 were due to the combination of filler effects and increased reactivity. No significant change in the properties of mortar containing 10 wt% TWCP-800 was observed. Study reveals that the thermal treatment of WCP at 800 °C is optimal and a sustainable approach to producing a supplementary binder for alkali activated materials.

Abstract:Recycling <a href="/topics/engineering/hardened-cement-paste">hardened cement paste</a> powder (HCPP) as an <a href="/topics/engineering/alternative-binder">alternative binder</a> is a high-efficiency approach to reducing the amount of hardened cement paste waste. In this work, the performance of the cement-based materials doped with HCPP from various sources is investigated. The results show that the HCPP particle is irregular, and that a CO2-curing treatment makes HCPP denser through changing unstable CH into stable CaCO3 and silica gel. Substituting HCPP for 50% cement results in a 13.3% increase in the <a href="/topics/engineering/drying-shrinkage">drying shrinkage</a>, and the blended HCPP is unfavorable to the mechanical strength and transport properties. For example, the 28-d <a href="/topics/engineering/compressive-strength">compressive strength</a> and <a href="/topics/engineering/sorptivity">sorptivity</a> coefficient of recycled mortar including 30% HCPP are approximately 27.6% lower and 55.3% higher than those of plain mortar without HCPP. Original hardened cement paste with low w/c ratio or blended with SCMs (fly ash, <a href="/topics/engineering/silica-fume">silica fume</a> and mineral powder) benefits the properties of preparing HCPP and its mortar, but cement grade in original hardened cement paste has little influence on the properties of preparing HCPP and its mortar. Employing CO2-curing treatment on HCPP improves the properties of its prepared cement-based materials; for instance, the 28-d compressive strength and sorptivity coefficient of recycled mortar with 30% carbonated HCPP are 12.6% higher and 34.8% lower compared with recycled mortar including 30% un-carbonated HCPP. Recycled mortar including 30% carbonated HCPP, as well as incorporating 30% HCPP from SCM-blended paste, shows water transport properties similar to plain mortar.

Abstract:A new approach conducted the development and design of materials from the problems, requirements and methods in engineering was analyzed carefully and verified by a two years trial in actual engineering. In this case, decomposition of hydrates, reduction of cohesive force and expansion which was caused by temperature change and water evaporation were regarded as the major reasons for thermal damage of concrete structure at long-time circular elevated temperature in metallurgy environment. Moreover, five material modification methods were adopted to enhance the thermal durability, which were the modification of composition and microstructure of hydrates, extra new binders, the revisement of porosity and pore distribution, the increase of anti-crack property, and the supplement of hydrophobic performance, respectively. Different mix proportions of cement mortar were designed and the effect on thermal durability were analyzed by mechanical experiments and microstructure observations. Design and Preparation Technology of Green Multiple Solid Waste Cementitious Materials

Abstract:For solid waste-based cementitious materials, most scholars focus their research on the hydration reaction of cementitious materials, but there is still a lack of solid waste design that comprehensively considers mechanical properties and durability. Therefore, this article focuses on exploring the mix of design and the microscopic and macroscopic properties of multi solid waste cementitious materials (MSWCMs), namely steel slag (SS), slag powder (SP), desulfurization gypsum (DG), fly ash (FA), and ordinary Portland cement (OPC). According to the orthogonal experimental results, the compressive strength of MSWCMs is optimal when the OPC content is 50% and the SS, SP, DG, and FA contents are 10%, 20%, 5%, and 15%, respectively. The MSWCMs group with an OPC content of 50% and SS, SP, DG, and FA contents of 5%, 15%, 5%, and 25% was selected as the control group. The pure OPC group was used as the blank group, and the optimal MSWCMs ratio group had a 28-day compressive strength of 50.7 megapascals, which was 14% and 7.6% higher than the control group and blank group, respectively. The drying shrinkage rate and resistance to chloride ions were also significantly improved, with maximum increases of 22.9%, 22.6%, and 8.9%, 9.8%, respectively. According to XRD, TG-DTG, and NMR testing, the improvement in macroscopic performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect between various solid wastes. This synergistic effect produces more ettringite (AFt) and C-(A)-S-H gel. This study provides a good theoretical basis for improving the comprehensive performance of MSWCMs and is conducive to reducing the use of cement, with significant economic and environmental benefits.

Abstract:Harmless disposal and resource utilization of hazardous industrial wastes has become an important issue with the green development of human society. However, resource utilization of hazardous solid wastes, such as the production of cementitious materials, is usually accompanied by a pretreatment process to remove adverse impurities that contaminate the final product. In this study, aluminum dross (AD) was thermally co-treated with another hazardous waste, municipal solid incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA), to synergistically solidify F and Na, control leaching of heavy metals, and remove chloride impurities. Significant crusting was observed when AD was thermally treated by itself, but not when AD and MSWI-FA were thermally co-treated. In the process of co-thermal treatment, the remaining Cl, Na, and K contents were reduced to as low as 0.3%, 1.8%, and 0.6%, respectively. CaO and SiO2 in MSWI-FA reacted with Na3AlF6 and Al2O3 in AD, and formed CaF2 and Na6(AlSiO4)6, which contributed to the prevention of crusting and limited the leaching concentrations of F and Na to below detection thresholds and 270.6 mg/L, respectively. In addition, heavy metals were well solidified, and dioxins were fully decomposed during thermal treatment. Finally, a sulfoaluminate cementitious material (SACM) with high early- and later-age strengths was successfully created via synergetic complementarity using thermally co-treated AD and MSWI-FA together with other solid wastes. Collectively, this study outlines a promising method for the efficient and sustainable utilization of AD and MSWI-FA.

Abstract:The use of waste glass powder, metakaolin and limestone filler in cement-based materials is attractive for recycling the waste and reducing carbon dioxide emissions from cement factories. In this laboratory study, the effects of waste glass powder, metakaolin and limestone filler on the thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, hydration products and pore structures of cement paste were investigated. The results indicated that the addition 25% of metakaolin in cement paste increased the thermal conductivity by 54%. While, the addition 25% of waste glass powder and limestone filler decreased the thermal conductivity of cement paste by 24.05% and 36.26%, respectively. The cement paste containing metakaolin exhibited lower porosity and higher compressive and flexural strength than pure cement paste. The incorporation of waste glass powder and limestone filler in cement paste decreased the compressive and flexural strength while increased the porosity. Under the same dosage conditions, the cement paste with limestone filler had a higher porosity than that with waste glass powder. This research provides the reference for application of waste glass powder, metakaolin and limestone filler to produce green building materials with excellent thermal conductivity.

Abstract:The design of an underground nuclear waste disposal requires a full characterization of concrete under various thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical conditions. This experimental work studied the characterization of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical effects using concretes made with cement CEM I or CEM V/A (according to European norms). Uniaxial and triaxial compression under 5 MPa confining pressure tests were performed under three different temperatures (T = 20°C, 50°C, and 80°C). The two concretes were dried under relative humidity (RH) to obtain a partially saturated state of approximately 70%. The results showed that the effects of water saturation and confining pressure are more important than that of temperature. Drying in high RH at different target temperatures led to an increase in uniaxial and triaxial strength but drying at 105°C had a negative effect on the strength and Young’s modulus. Oven drying caused microcracking in the concrete. The microcracks deeply influenced the thermal damage to the material, affecting its mechanical behavior. The triaxial strength clearly increased due to the presence of confining pressure. Moreover, an important influence of cement type was observed on the mechanical properties; the concrete based on CEM V/A had a greater porosity than CEM I, and a finer pore structure appeared due to the presence of mineral admixtures.

Abstract:The output of C&D waste is increasing year by year, among which low-quality recycled brick aggregates (RBAs) have not been well utilized and brought environmental burden. The durability of steam-cured concrete (HCC) is often compromised due to the detrimental effects of this curing regime on the long-term performance and microstructure development of the concrete material. To address this issue, this study investigates the potential of incorporating RBAs to improve the long-term durability of HCC. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of a small amount of RBA (10–20%) not only enhances the 28-d strength of HCC by 2.5–11.3%, but also improves its impermeability by mitigating heat damage effects. The combined application of fine and coarse RBA was found to effectively balance the negative effects of coarse RBA on the performance of HCC. Furthermore, the utilization of RBA in HCC was shown to have economic and environmental benefits. The results of this study demonstrate a simple and effective approach to improve the long-term durability of HCC while promoting the high-value utilization of solid waste.

Abstract:A viable strategy for promoting sustainable development and a cleaner environment is the reuse of demolition-related ceramic waste and ceramic manufacturing byproducts in the production of concrete. The purpose of this study is to assess the possibilities for using ceramic waste in the production of concrete as a fine aggregate and cementitious material. The effectiveness of concrete mixtures incorporating 20–100% ceramic waste fine (CWF) as a replacement for natural fine aggregate and 10–30% ceramic waste powder (CWP) in place of cement was evaluated. Their influence was assessed with respect to workability, mechanical performance, durability, and elevated temperature resistance. The results were analyzed via energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The findings illustrated that the increase in the replacement levels of CWP and CWF decreases the concrete workability. The mechanical performance of concrete mixtures is enhanced under compression and flexural tests as the replacement ratios of CWF and CWP increase up to 50% and 10% as replacements of sand and cement, respectively. The increases in compressive and flexural strength were 5.33% and 8.14%, respectively, at age 28 days. The concrete water permeability significantly increases as the CWF replacement ratio increases, and the incorporation of CWP reduces this negative impact. After exposure to 200, 400, 600, and 800 °C, the residual compressive strengths of concrete mixtures incorporating CWF and CWP were up to 95.02%, 89.66%, 74.33%, and 51.34%, respectively, compared to control mixtures, which achieved 84.25%, 76.03%, 59.36%, and 35.84% of their initial strength. Microstructure analysis revealed that combining CWP and CWF significantly improves cement hydration when compared to the reference mixture. Thus, the use of CWF and CWP in the production of masonry mortar might be an economical alternative that would aid in raising the recycling rate of demolition and construction debris and supporting sustainable growth in the building sector.

Effect of Ceramic Waste Powder on Mechanical Properties of Recycled Coarse Aggregate Concrete

Abstract:In this paper, the recycled coarse aggregate concrete (RCAC) was prepared by replacing cement with ceramic waste powder (CWP) in mass fractions of 0, 10%, 20%, 30% and 40%. Its mechanical properties, hydration products, microstructure, and morphology were investigated by means of isothermal calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and universal testing machine. The results show that the early compressive strength of RCAC is reduced by the addition of CWP, but the compressive strength of RCAC with 10% and 20% CWP increased by 12.53% and 4.78% respectively. In addition, after 56d of curing, the splitting tensile strength and flexural strength of RCAC with 10% CWP are higher than that with none CWP, but lower than natural aggregate concrete (NAC). The incorporation of CWP would accelerate the hydration of blended paste slightly, which leads to earlier exothermic peak. On the other hand, CWP could markedly reduce the total hydration heat and the hydration exothermic rate. The TG results showed that the content of Ca(OH)2 in CWP-cement paste decreased with the increase of CWP content after 56d of curing. It can be seen from SEM that the incorporation of CWP makes the microstructure of hardened paste more compact.

Abstract:This paper intends to contribute to a better knowledge of the dehydration and rehydration of blended SCMs(SF, FA, GGBS, LS)-cement pastes. To this end, a comprehensive experimental program combining QXRD, TG, SEM, isothermal calorimetry, MIP and mechanical tests was performed. The thermal activation temperature (TAT) has a significant influence on the rehydration properties of recycled blended cement (RBC) pastes, in particular, different optimum TAT was obtained in different RBC with various precursor components, resulting in pastes with different microstructure and mechanical properties. The RBC paste is formed by a 'dual structure' composed by internal hydration products (rehydrated from porous RBC particles) and external hydration products (surrounding dispersed particles, primarily AFt and AFm). The reformation of C(-A)-S-H from the thermal-activated dehydrated amorphous phases is found to be responsible for the reactivity and strength gain of the RBC as a binder.

Abstract:Using construction and demolition waste composites (CDWC) and fly ash (FA) to replace cement to produce concrete can reduce CO2 emissions. However, the CDWC-based geopolymer materials have two imperfections: the compressive strength is prone to decrease with the increase of curing age (strength shrinkage) under heat curing conditions, and the strength develops slowly under ambient curing conditions. To solve the problems of these materials, on the one hand, we designed an experiment of preparing CDWC-based geopolymer concrete (CDWGC) with pretreated CDWC at different high temperatures. We analyzed the influence of different pretreatment temperatures on the mechanical properties of CDWGC through compressive strength, SEM-EDS and XRD. On the other hand, we added CaO to improve the mechanical properties of CDWC-based geopolymer paste (CDWGP) under ambient curing conditions. Further, the CO2 emissions of pretreating CDWC and adding CaO were calculated by life cycle assessment (LCA). The results show that: (1) Pretreatment of CDWC can effectively solve the problem of CDWGC strength shrinkage. (2) The compressive strength of CDWGP cured at ambient can be significantly improved by adding CaO, and the compressive strength can be increased by 180.9% when the optimum content is 3%. (3) Adding CaO had less impact on CO2 emissions, a low-carbon way to improve its strength effectively.
