Abstract:Hydrated cement paste can be recycled by thermal activation as an alternative binder with low energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions during production. This investigation focuses on the microstructure and phase transformation (dehydration) of GGBS/OPC blended paste (the precursor) at elevated temperature up to 850 °C, and the rehydration mechanisms of the recycled GGBS/OPC blended cement (RBC), through laser diffraction, nitrogen adsorption, isothermal calorimetry, TG, QXRD, SEM, MIP, 29Si NMR, 27Al NMR and 1H NMR. The results show that a ‘dreierketten’-like structure in the precursor paste began to decrease at 550 °C, and disappeared at 650 °C, associated with a continuous increase of a new amorphous nesosilicate phase. At 750 °C and above, irreversible changes in microstructure and phases of the precursor paste occurred, when the dehydration of C(-A)-S-H was almost complete and phases including polycrystalline C2S, gehlenite and åkermanite with little reactivities were increased. The rehydration and reformation of C(-A)-S-H from this amorphous nesosilicate phase explained the recovered superior reactivity and strength, an interesting aspect that can be exploited in precast component production.
