Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs), semiconductor nanocrystals capped with surfactant ligands and dispersed in solution, have provided a powerful platform for the achievement of numerous classes of solution-processed photonic and optoelectronic devices over recent years. They exhibit a plethora of outstanding properties, such as cost-effective synthesis, wide size-tunable emission (or absorption), large-scale solution-processable fabrication, and impressive photostability. Based on these properties achieved by novel material and structure engineering, these CQD-based photonic and optoelectronic devices are appealing alternatives to costly semiconductor products. Furthermore, a combination of these devices enables the construction of CQD-based nanophotonic circuits, which are generally composed of various components for light generation, guiding, manipulation, and detection in a single chip. In this review, we firstly summarize optical properties of CQDs, and then CQD-based passive and active nanophotonic devices, and nanophotonic circuits are also introduced and discussed. Lastly, further developments and challenges of CQD-based nanophotonic devices and circuits are outlined.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have been widely used as absorption or emission materials due to their large-absorption and high-gain properties. However, they are seldom used as low-loss materials in passive nanophotonic devices. Moreover, combinations of two or more properties of CQDs are difficult owing to miscibility of different CQDs. Here, low-loss CQD waveguides are experimentally achieved at wavelengths longer than their fluorescence wavelengths. By using the low-loss and uniform CQD waveguides, various passive nanophotonic devices and a nanophotonic circuit are successfully demonstrated. Furthermore, by employing both of a pattern-assisted stacking and a transfer-printing approach, the miscible problem of different CQDs is addressed, and a low-loss CQD waveguide and a high-gain CQD laser are experimentally integrated on a single chip.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dot (QD), a solution-processable nanoscale optoelectronic building block with well-controlled light absorption and emission properties, has emerged as a promising material system capable of interacting with various photonic structures. Integrated QD/photonic structures have been successfully realized in many optical and optoelectronic devices, enabling enhanced performance and/or new functionalities. In this review, the recent advances in this research area are summarized. In particular, the use of four typical photonic structures, namely, diffraction gratings, resonance cavities, plasmonic structures, and photonic crystals, in modulating the light absorption (e.g., for solar cells and photodetectors) or light emission (e.g., for color converters, lasers, and light emitting diodes) properties of QD-based devices is discussed. A brief overview of QD-based passive devices for on-chip photonic circuit integration is also presented to provide a holistic view on future opportunities for QD/photonic structure-integrated optoelectronic systems.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are a promising class of materials for next-generation optoelectronic devices, such as displays, LEDs, lasers, photodetectors, and solar cells. CQDs can be obtained at low cost and in large quantities using wet chemistry. CQDs have also been produced using various materials, such as CdSe, InP, perovskites, PbS, PbSe, and InAs. Some of these CQD materials absorb and emit photons in the visible region, making them excellent candidates for displays and LEDs, while others interact with low-energy photons in the near-infrared (NIR) region and are intensively utilized in NIR lasers, NIR photodetectors, and solar cells. In this review, we have focused on NIR CQD materials and reviewed the development of CQD materials for solar cells, NIR lasers, and NIR photodetectors since the first set of reports on CQD materials in these particular applications.

Abstract:All-solution-processed quantum dot (QD) upconversion devices were realized by constructing a colloidal PbS QD near-infrared (NIR ∼ 1 μm)-sensitive layer on the cathode side of a red CdSe quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED). Different from conventional upconversion devices, we utilized the photogenerated electrons rather than the holes created in the NIR-sensitive layer to inject into the QLED for visible light emission. Consequently, we obtained high-performance devices with a maximum photon-to-photon conversion efficiency of 3.35% and a luminance on-off ratio of approximately 8 × 103. The results indicate that the device structure could be used to realize low-cost and portable high-performance QD-based upconversion devices via solution-processing.

Abstract:As semiconductor nanocrystals, colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) arc widely used as gain materials for micro/nanoscalc lasers owing to their advantages of high quantum yields (similar to 100%), tunable emission wavelengths, excellent stability, high refractive index, solution proccssability, and low-cost synthesis. Based on nanoscalc sizes (2-20 nm) and solution proccssability, CQDs can construct high refractive index micro/nanoscalc structures through self-assembly methods. Here, three kinds of CQD micro/nanoscalc lasers arc summarized based on manufacturing methods of CQD resonators, and their characteristics arc discussed in details. In addition, the on-chip integrations of CQD lasers and waveguides arc also introduced. Finally, the outlook for the development of CQD lasers and its on-chip integration in photonic integrated circuits (PICs) is provided.

Abstract:Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are promising building blocks for the realization of future optoelectronic technologies, thanks to their size-tunable electronic and optical properties. Among various types of QDs, colloidal "giant" QDs (g-QDs, core/thick-shell) have been widely used in different applications, such as solar cells, light emitting devices, luminescent solar concentrators and photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen production. However, g-QDs have a thick-shell which serves as a physical barrier for electron and hole transfer, leading to a slow charge transfer rate. In this work, we synthesized CdSe/CdSexS1-x/CdS core/shell/shell g-QDs with an intermediate CdSexS1-x alloyed layer. The presence of this interfacial layer largely improves the absorption of CdSe/CdS QDs, particularly in the 300-650 nm range. By engineering the interfacial layer, the holes can leak more into the CdS shell region compared to that of CdSe/CdS QDs. PEC devices based on alloyed g-QDs exhibit a 20% higher saturated photocurrent density (11 ± 0.5 mA cm-2) compared to CdSe/CdS QDs. In addition, after one-hour illumination (100 mW cm-2), the PEC cell based on alloyed g-QDs still exhibits a photocurrent density of 7.5 mA cm-2, maintaining 70% of its initial value. Such alloyed g-QDs are very promising for several emerging optoelectronic applications, where charge separation, transfer and transport play a critical role for the realization of high performance devices.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) are a unique class of emitters with size-tunable emission wavelengths, saturated emission colors, near-unity luminance efficiency, inherent photo- and thermal- stability and excellent solution processability. In the past few years, efficiency and lifetime of quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) achieved tremendous progress. These encouraging facts foreshadow the commercialization of QLEDs, which promises an unprecedented generation of cost-effective, large-area, energy-saving, wide-color-gamut, ultra-thin and flexible displays. Here we review our activities associated with QLEDs, including exciton-generation mechanisms, material chemistry of charge-transporting layers and device engineering.
Colloidal Quantum Dot Bulk Heterojunction Solids with Near-Unity Charge Extraction Efficiency

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are of interest for optoelectronic applications owing to their tunable properties and ease of processing. Large-diameter CQDs offer optical response in the infrared (IR), beyond the bandgap of c-Si and perovskites. The absorption coefficient of IR CQDs (≈104 cm-1) entails the need for micrometer-thick films to maximize the absorption of IR light. This exceeds the thickness compatible with the efficient extraction of photogenerated carriers, a fact that limits device performance. Here, CQD bulk heterojunction solids are demonstrated that, with extended carrier transport length, enable efficient IR light harvesting. An in-solution doping strategy for large-diameter CQDs is devised that addresses the complex interplay between (100) facets and doping agents, enabling to control CQD doping, energetic configuration, and size homogeneity. The hetero-offset between n-type CQDs and p-type CQDs is manipulated to drive the transfer of electrons and holes into distinct carrier extraction pathways. This enables to form active layers exceeding thicknesses of 700 nm without compromising open-circuit voltage and fill factor. As a result, >90% charge extraction efficiency across the ultraviolet to IR range (350-1400 nm) is documented.

Abstract:Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) are promising for next-generation solution-processed optoelectronic devices such as solar cells, photodetectors, and light emitting diodes. In recent years, advances in CQD surface engineering have enabled the rapid rise in CQD solar efficiency from an initial 5% to the latest10%. Recently, a new solid phase of matter, the CQD/perovskite composite material (poly hetero crystalline (PHC) solid), was developed. Through epitaxial growth of perovskite on embedded CQDs, the CQD surface defects were dramatically reduced. Meanwhile, the excellent charge carrier mobility of the perovksite matrix was introduced into a CQD solid. The new CQD/perovskite PHC solid presents new opportunity to improve the performance of CQD based optoelectronic materials [1-6].

The special characteristics of these properties are of great significance in the fields of solar energy conversion, display, and electronic devices. Here, we present a comprehensive overview of the potential applications of colloidal CIS QDs in various fields, with a particular focus on solar energy conversion (such as QD solar cells, QD-sensitized solar cells, and QD luminescence solar concentrators), solar-to-hydrogen production (such as photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical H2 production), and QD electronics (such as QD transistors, QD light-emitting diodes, and QD photodetectors). Furthermore, we offer our insights into the current challenges and future opportunities associated with CIS QDs for further research.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) have unparalleled advantages in optoelectronic fields including light‐emitting diode (LED), solar cell (SC), photodetector (PD), laser device (LD), and photocatalysis (PC). However, it's impossible for high performance to separated from excellent synthesis method, reasonable composition selection, and accurate structure design. The review will provide the basis for its high‐quality applications and further expand other applications. In recent decades, quantum dots (QDs) with tunable bandgap, large absorption coefficient, high quantum yield, multiexciton effect, and easy solution processing have unparalleled advantages in photoelectric conversion. Optoelectronic devices based on QDs of different composition have made great progress. However, there is still a lack of reviews on comparing the optoelectronic application level of semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs), perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), and carbon quantum dots (CDs), and also rarely providing a comprehensive summary of photocatalysis. First, this review almost completely summarizes advantages and disadvantages of common synthesis methods for QDs, especially pointing out the importance of optimization strategies for preparing high‐quality QDs such as ligand engineering, ion exchange, and purification separation. Then, compositions of SQD, PQD, CD, and corresponding optoelectronic properties are introduced, respectively. Next, the strengths and weaknesses of the four QDs structures are compared in detail. Finally, the flourishing development in various optoelectronic applications is separately demonstrated, and development degree of SQDs, PQDs, and CDs is compared to discover the most suitable application scenarios for each. On these bases, bottlenecks and opportunities are also put forwarded, hoping to stimulate more breakthroughs in this field.
