Abstract:The discrete states resulting from three-dimensional confinement in semiconductor quantum dots retain much of the character of their bulk-band origins, for example their angular momentum and effective mass. In addition they have many features of discrete atomic-like single particle states. Strong optical field interactions and reasonable dephasing rates make this system attractive for basic quantum optics experiments, as well as applications in quantum information sciences. However, semiconductor quantum dots have large inhomogeneous state broadens due to variations in size and shape. In addition, epitaxial semiconductor quantum dots, one of the classes in common use, rarely have ideal symmetry. Here we show how an optical technique can be used to fine-tune the transition energies of semiconductor quantum dots states and if desired restore targeted symmetry elements. This approach can be applied to establish degeneracies in biexciton-exciton decays to form discrete entangled photon pairs or to establish indistinguishability between different quantum dots.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) generally refer to nanoscale particles of conventional semiconductors that are subject to the quantum-confinement effect, though other nanomaterials of similar optical and redox properties are also named as QDs even in the absence of strictly defined quantum confinement. Among such nanomaterials that have attracted tremendous recent interest are carbon dots, which are small carbon nanoparticles with some form of surface passivation, and graphene quantum dots in various configurations. In this article, we highlight these carbon-based QDs by focusing on their syntheses, on their photoexcited state properties and redox processes, and on their applications as photocatalysts in visible-light carbon dioxide reduction and in water-splitting, as well as on their mechanistic similarities and differences.

Abstract:Silicon quantum dots (Si QDs) are usually smaller than 10 nm. They have drawn much attention from researchers because of their novel electronic and optical properties caused by quantum confinement effect and surface effect, which are different from those of bulk silicon materials. In recent years, Si QDs have been applied in the field of optoelectronics because of their novel electronic and optical properties, and a series of research progress have been achieved. The electronic and optical properties of Si QDs are overviewed. The use of Si QDs in optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes, solar cells and photodetectors is introduced in detail. The performance of different types of Si QDs in optoelectronic devices is analyzed as well. It is believed that if continuous efforts in the research on Si QDs are made, Si QDs will play a crucial role in the innovation of optoelectronic devices in the future.

Abstract:Size dependent low dimensional semiconductors can be assembled with the optimum quantum efficiency with the desirable properties for fabricating novel optical nano-devices. As a result, the enhancement of electronic and optical properties is observed when the geometrical dimensions are reduced. Optical transitions occurring between confined quantum states or bound to continuum states either in the valence band or in the conduction band or between them are specific of quantum semiconductor structures. The operating wavelength of interband optical devices is dependent on the band gap of a semiconductor on contrary the intraband optical devices exhibit the possibilities of wavelength controlling by design because it involves the transition energy between the levels either in the conduction band or in the valence band. In addition, the quantum confinement of the carriers enhances the interaction between energy levels leading to optical transitions with a narrow bandwidth. The applications of external perturbations and the geometrical confinement induce significant modifications in the electronic and optical properties of a quantum dot. Thus, the reduced dimensionality systems exhibit the novel properties with the superior performance in nano-optical devices including optical amplifiers, high-speed electro-optical modulators, inter-subband long wavelength photo-detectors, diodes, lasers and long wavelength fibre optical communication networks.

Abstract:During the past decade, an abundance of semiconductor nanocrystals, also named quantum dots (QDs), have been developed attributed to their unique physical and chemical properties, with size-tunable light emission, high photostability, and multiple fluorescence colors. Recently, the synthesis of doped semiconductor nanocrystals has become an active subject in the field of materials chemistry. The introduction of impurity atoms into the synthetic process to alter the properties of semiconductor materials in desirable and a controllable way to help resolve challenges in applications from bioimaging to solar cells. Different types of doped semiconductor nanocrystals have been designed and prepared from various synthetic routes that usually exhibited some unique features. In this paper, several advances in doped semiconductor nanocrystals are summarized, including synthetic method, physical and chemical properties and analytical application.

Abstract:It is the unique size-dependent band gap of quantum dots (QDs) that makes them so special in various applications. They have attracted great interest, especially in optoelectronic fields such as light emitting diodes and photovoltaic cells, because their photoluminescent characteristics can be significantly improved via optimization of the processes by which they are synthesized. Control of their core/shell heterostructures is especially important and advantageous. However, a few challenges remain to be overcome before QD-based devices can completely replace current optoelectronic technology. This Special Issue provides detailed guides for synthesis of high-quality QDs and their applications. In terms of fabricating devices, tailoring optical properties of QDs and engineering defects in QD-related interfaces for higher performance remain important issues to be addressed.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs), a type of nanoparticles, have displayed promising applications within many scientific fields. A QD is a nanoscale semiconductor particle with unique quantum mechanical properties. These tiny structures, typically ranging from 1 to 10 nanometers in diameter, exhibit distinct electronic and optical behaviors due to their size-dependent quantum confinement effects. Their applications improve upon quality, energy consumption, and efficiency in LEDs, batteries, catalysts, solar energy, and more. This review article goes over the fundamentals of nanochemistry as a whole, before proceeding into more in-depth procedures on synthesizing quantum dots and delving into various applications today. The key points of this article are to introduce scholars who are new to the field of quantum dots in the fundamentals of quantum chemistry before elaborating on the improvements quantum dots have brought to many fields. This article covers in-depth enough to grasp most concepts behind these applications, but as a whole, this field is still relatively new, in which case new applications and improvements of quantum dots can be found. In the future, quantum dots may become a key to advancing society, with possible applications in medicinal processes, more efficient energy storage, better energy generation, and quantum computing, in addition to what QDs already improved within those fields.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) have unparalleled advantages in optoelectronic fields including light‐emitting diode (LED), solar cell (SC), photodetector (PD), laser device (LD), and photocatalysis (PC). However, it's impossible for high performance to separated from excellent synthesis method, reasonable composition selection, and accurate structure design. The review will provide the basis for its high‐quality applications and further expand other applications. In recent decades, quantum dots (QDs) with tunable bandgap, large absorption coefficient, high quantum yield, multiexciton effect, and easy solution processing have unparalleled advantages in photoelectric conversion. Optoelectronic devices based on QDs of different composition have made great progress. However, there is still a lack of reviews on comparing the optoelectronic application level of semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs), perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), and carbon quantum dots (CDs), and also rarely providing a comprehensive summary of photocatalysis. First, this review almost completely summarizes advantages and disadvantages of common synthesis methods for QDs, especially pointing out the importance of optimization strategies for preparing high‐quality QDs such as ligand engineering, ion exchange, and purification separation. Then, compositions of SQD, PQD, CD, and corresponding optoelectronic properties are introduced, respectively. Next, the strengths and weaknesses of the four QDs structures are compared in detail. Finally, the flourishing development in various optoelectronic applications is separately demonstrated, and development degree of SQDs, PQDs, and CDs is compared to discover the most suitable application scenarios for each. On these bases, bottlenecks and opportunities are also put forwarded, hoping to stimulate more breakthroughs in this field.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) have sparked great interest due to their unique electronic, optical, and structural properties. In this review, we provide a critical analysis of the latest advances in the synthesis, properties, and applications of QDs. We discuss synthesis techniques, including colloidal and hydrothermal synthesis, and highlight how the underlying principles of these techniques affect the resulting properties of QDs. We then delve into the wide range of applications of QDs, from QDs based color conversion, light-emitting diodes and biomedicine to quantum-based cryptography and spintronics. Finally, we identify the current challenges and future prospects for quantum dot research. Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) usually refer to very small nanoparticles of only few nanometers in size. The optical and electronic properties of QDs differ from those of larger particles. QDs will emit light of specific frequencies if electricity or light is applied to them, and these frequencies can be precisely tuned by changing the dots' size, shape, and material, giving rise to many applications. In this chapter, apart from the most common QDs, e.g., the cadmium (Cd)-containing semiconductor QDs, other types of QDs, including silver chalcogenide quantum dots, carbon quantum dots, silicon quantum dots, black phosphorus quantum dots, germanium quantum dots, and polymer dots are also introduced with an emphasis on their cancer therapy and imaging applications.

Abstract:The unique architectures of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) and one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures give rise to a fascinating array of optical and electronic properties, making them useful for numerous industrial and environmental applications. This work reports the latest developments in QD-based nanotechnologies featuring II–VI semiconductor nanostructures with tunable optoelectronic properties. The synthesis of chalcogenide-, oxide-, and alloy-based semiconductor QDs is described in detail. Special attention is given to optical investigations supplemented by density functional theory calculations to explore the energy levels and electronic structure of II–VI semiconductor QDs. Finally, new applications of QDs in the areas of solar cells and optoelectronics are summarized, and the work concludes an assessment of future prospects of II–VI semiconductor QDs and 1D nanomaterials.
