Abstract:Carbon quantum dots are a novel form of carbon material. They offer numerous benefits including particle size adjustability, light resistance, ease of functionalization, low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and high-water solubility, as well as their easy accessibility of raw materials. Carbon quantum dots have been widely used in various fields. The preparation methods employed are predominantly top-down methods such as arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical and chemical oxidation, as well as bottom-up methods such as templates, microwave, and hydrothermal techniques. This article provides an overview of the properties, preparation methods, raw materials for preparation, and the heteroatom doping of carbon quantum dots, and it summarizes the applications in related fields, such as optoelectronics, bioimaging, drug delivery, cancer therapy, sensors, and environmental remediation. Finally, currently encountered issues of carbon quantum dots are presented. The latest research progress in synthesis and application, as well as the challenges outlined in this review, can help and encourage future research on carbon quantum dots.

Abstract:As an excellent fluorescent nanomaterial, carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have the properties of small molecular weight, small particle size, high fluorescence stability, no optical flicker, wide excitation spectrum, continuous, long adjustable emission wavelength, good biocompatibility and low toxicity. At present, it has been widely used in biological detection, in vivo and in vitro imaging, drug delivery and diagnostic drugs. This review presents a broad overview of recent progress in synthesis, optical properties, and biomedical applications of CQDs. The synthesis methods of CQDs are first introduced, followed by an extensive discussion of its purification, surface functionalization methods and stability. Furthermore, the optical properties of CQDs are presented, with an emphasis on photoluminescence mechanism and the relationship between synthesis conditions and optical properties. This review's much focus is given to the biomedical applications of CQDs, including detection, imaging (in vivo and in vitro imaging) and drug delivery (targeted therapy, photodynamic and photothermal therapy, and immunological and gene therapy). Finally, we cover the key issues and future prospects/advances that CQDs still have to deal with in the biomedical sector as well as possible solutions.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon nanoparticles also termed as carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted so much interest when compared to the traditional semiconductor quantum dots due to their applications in chemical sensing, biomedical imaging, nanotechnology, photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and electrochemistry. Along with their optical features, CQDs have desired properties such as less toxicity, environmentally friendly nature, inexpensive, and simple preparation processes. In addition, CQDs can have their physical and chemical properties controlled by surface passivation and functionalization. This article provides an account of CQDs because of their distinct characteristics and considerable capacity in diverse applications. The article is categorized into various sections that highlight various synthesis methodologies of CQDs with their advantages/disadvantages and their potential applications in sensors, bio-imaging, drug delivery, solar cells, and supercapacitors. The different applications of CQDs can be demonstrated by controlled synthesis methods. We have also discussed gas sensing applications of CQDs briefly and provided a brief overview of osmotic power generation using CQDs for energy applications.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have attracted much attention owing to their unique optical properties and a wide range of applications. The fabrication and control of CQDs with organic solubility and long-wavelength emission are still urgent issues to be addressed for their practical use in LEDs. Here, organic-soluble CQDs were produced at a high yield of similar to 90% by a facile solvent engineering treatment of 1,3,6-trinitropyrene, which were simultaneously used as the nitrogen and carbon sources. The optical properties of the organic-soluble CQDs (o-CQDs) were investigated in nonpolar and polar solvents, films, and LED devices. The CQDs have a narrow size distribution around 2.66 nm, and can be dispersed in different organic solvents. Significantly, the as-prepared CQDs present an excitation-independent emission at 607 nm with fluorescence quantum yields (QYs) up to 65.93% in toluene solution. A pronounced solvent effect was observed and their strong absorption bands can be tuned in the whole visible region (400-750 nm) by changing the solvent. The CQDs in various solvents can emit bright, excitation-independent, long-wavelength fluorescence (orange to red). Furthermore, benefiting from the unique oil-solution properties, the as-prepared CQDs can be processed in thin film and device forms to meet the requirements of various applications, such as phosphor-based white-light LEDs. The color coordinate for these CQD modified LEDs is realized at (0.32, 0.31), which is close to pure white light (0.33, 0.33).

Abstract:Carbon-based quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a fascinating class of advanced materials with a unique combination of optoelectronic, biocompatible, and catalytic characteristics, apt for a plethora of applications ranging from electronic to photoelectrochemical devices. Recent research works have established carbon-based QDs for those frontline applications through improvements in materials design, processing, and device stability. This review broadly presents the recent progress in the synthesis of carbon-based QDs, including carbon QDs, graphene QDs, graphitic carbon nitride QDs and their heterostructures, as well as their salient applications. The synthesis methods of carbon-based QDs are first introduced, followed by an extensive discussion of the dependence of the device performance on the intrinsic properties and nanostructures of carbon-based QDs, aiming to present the general strategies for device designing with optimal performance. Furthermore, diverse applications of carbon-based QDs are presented, with an emphasis on the relationship between band alignment, charge transfer, and performance improvement. Among the applications discussed in this review, much focus is given to photo and electrocatalytic, energy storage and conversion, and bioapplications, which pose a grand challenge for rational materials and device designs. Finally, a summary is presented, and existing challenges and future directions are elaborated.

Abstract:As new members of carbon material family, carbon and graphene quantum dots (CDs, GQDs) have attracted tremendous attentions for their potentials for biological, optoelectronic, and energy related applications. Among these applications, bio‐imaging has been intensively studied, but optoelectronic and energy devices are rapidly rising. In this Feature Article, recent exciting progresses on CD‐ and GQD‐based optoelectronic and energy devices, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), solar cells (SCs), photodetctors (PDs), photocatalysis, batteries, and supercapacitors are highlighted. The recent understanding on their microstructure and optical properties are briefly introduced in the first part. Some important progresses on optoelectronic and energy devices are then addressed as the main part of this Feature Article. Finally, a brief outlook is given, pointing out that CDs and GQDs could play more important roles in communication‐ and energy‐functional devices in the near future. Carbon dots and graphene quantum dots have been investigated for several years and researchers' interest is moving from photoluminescence towards device applications. In this Feature Article, applications in optoelectronic and energy devices of carbon dots and graphene quantum dots are summarized, as well as their optical properties. Future directions, challenges, and other possible applications are also put forward.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) have unparalleled advantages in optoelectronic fields including light‐emitting diode (LED), solar cell (SC), photodetector (PD), laser device (LD), and photocatalysis (PC). However, it's impossible for high performance to separated from excellent synthesis method, reasonable composition selection, and accurate structure design. The review will provide the basis for its high‐quality applications and further expand other applications. In recent decades, quantum dots (QDs) with tunable bandgap, large absorption coefficient, high quantum yield, multiexciton effect, and easy solution processing have unparalleled advantages in photoelectric conversion. Optoelectronic devices based on QDs of different composition have made great progress. However, there is still a lack of reviews on comparing the optoelectronic application level of semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs), perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), and carbon quantum dots (CDs), and also rarely providing a comprehensive summary of photocatalysis. First, this review almost completely summarizes advantages and disadvantages of common synthesis methods for QDs, especially pointing out the importance of optimization strategies for preparing high‐quality QDs such as ligand engineering, ion exchange, and purification separation. Then, compositions of SQD, PQD, CD, and corresponding optoelectronic properties are introduced, respectively. Next, the strengths and weaknesses of the four QDs structures are compared in detail. Finally, the flourishing development in various optoelectronic applications is separately demonstrated, and development degree of SQDs, PQDs, and CDs is compared to discover the most suitable application scenarios for each. On these bases, bottlenecks and opportunities are also put forwarded, hoping to stimulate more breakthroughs in this field.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) are fluorescent carbon nanomaterials that have been applied to biology, medicine, and optoelectronics, owing to their significant advantages such as simple synthesis methods, low cost, and widely available sources of raw synthesis materials. This review summarizes CQD preparation methods, which include hydrothermal and microwave-assisted synthesis methods, as well as separation methods such as centrifugation, dialysis, and filtration. Additionally, we review the application of CQDs in the detection of active ingredients, primarily phenolic compounds, in traditional Chinese medicine. We also discuss the quenching mechanism of CQD fluorescence using the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine. Limitations such as insufficient test selectivity, weak fluorescence intensity, and an unclear quantitative relationship between preparation methods and properties should be resolved for the efficient use of CQDs to detect active ingredients in Chinese medicine.
A multi-color carbon quantum dots based on the coordinated effect of quantum size and surface defects with green synthesis

Abstract:As an important complement to traditional quantum dots (QDs), carbon quantum dots (CQDs) possess the characteristics of low toxicity, easy preparation, low cost, and good biocompatibility. Here, we have successfully prepared blue, yellow-green, yellow and red emitting CQDs by a one-step solvothermal method using o-phenylenediamine as a precursor and only water and ethanol as solvents. It is noted that the diameter of CQDs satisfies the quantum size effect, which is also corroborated by the reduced graphitization. The decay processes of CQDs obey double exponential fit. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) conclusively determines that the red-shift from yellow-green to red CQDs is associated with the carbon-/oxygen-related surface defects except for the quantum size effect. Intriguingly, multi-color CQDs-based LEDs devices using thermoset epoxy resins have been successfully fabricated, which illustrates the great potential of CQDs for future applications in the luminescence field due to their superior performance and environmentally friendly fabrication.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) are a unique class of emitters with size-tunable emission wavelengths, saturated emission colors, near-unity luminance efficiency, inherent photo- and thermal- stability and excellent solution processability. In the past few years, efficiency and lifetime of quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs) achieved tremendous progress. These encouraging facts foreshadow the commercialization of QLEDs, which promises an unprecedented generation of cost-effective, large-area, energy-saving, wide-color-gamut, ultra-thin and flexible displays. Here we review our activities associated with QLEDs, including exciton-generation mechanisms, material chemistry of charge-transporting layers and device engineering.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots are the materials of a new era with astonishing properties such as high photoluminescence, chemical tuneability and high biocompatibility. Since their discovery, carbon quantum dots have been described as nanometric high-fluorescent carbon nanoparticles, but this definition has become weaker year after year. Nowadays, the classification and the physical explanation of carbon quantum dots optical properties and their chemical structure remain matter of debate. In this review, we provide a clear discussion on these points, providing a starting point for the rationalization of their classification and a comprehensive view on the optical and chemical features of carbon quantum dots.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have shown great potential in optoelectronic applications. Very recently, CQDs have attracted much attention in white-emitting diodes (WLEDs) for lighting due to their characteristic broad emission, tunable fluorescence emission and high thermal stability. This mini review updates the latest research in the design of high-performance WLEDs with different correlated color temperatures by tuning the red component using red emissive CQDs and single-component white emissive CQDs (SCWE-CQDs). The prospects for the development of CQD based WLEDs with higher efficiency and color quality will be discussed.

Abstract:<p>An excellent photoluminescence properties of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) offers great potential in sensing applications. The remarkable optical properties are promptly accessible to be recorded as a potential sensing signal. This paper highlights the recent advances of CQDs application as the sensing materials in optical sensor technology. The modification of CQDs via physical and chemical approaches tremendously improves its physicochemical properties, producing an excellent sensing output. The interaction mechanism between CQDs and chemical analytes is analyzed through dipole-dipole interaction and charge transfer. Such interactions change their fluorescence properties, leading to the enhancement of fluorescence signals and improved the optical sensor performances. The incorporation of CQDs with numerous optical detection method further improve the optical sensor advancement. The application of CQDs as sensing materials in diverse optical sensing techniques is also discussed in this review. Finally, the current challenges of the present and the perspective for the forthcoming future are critically assessed in the concluding section.</p>

Abstract:AbstractElectrochemistry belongs to an important branch of chemistry that deals with the chemical changes produced by electricity and the production of electricity by chemical changes. Therefore, it can not only act a powerful tool for materials synthesis, but also offer an effective platform for sensing and catalysis. As extraordinary zero‐dimensional materials, carbon‐based quantum dots (CQDs) have been attracting tremendous attention due to their excellent properties such as good chemical stability, environmental friendliness, nontoxicity and abundant resources. Compared with the traditional methods for the preparation of CQDs, electrochemical (EC) methods offer advantages of simple instrumentation, mild reaction conditions, low cost and mass production. In return, CQDs could provide cost‐effective, environmentally friendly, biocompatible, stable and easily‐functionalizable probes, modifiers and catalysts for EC sensing. However, no specific review has been presented to systematically summarize both aspects until now. In this review, the EC preparation methods of CQDs are critically discussed focusing on CQDs. We further emphasize the applications of CQDs in EC sensors, electrocatalysis, biofuel cells and EC flexible devices. This review will further the experimental and theoretical understanding of the challenges and future prospective in this field, open new directions on exploring new advanced CQDs in EC to meet the high demands in diverse applications.
