Abstract:Next-generation nuclear power plays a large role in the world's efforts to meet critical climate goals. The sodium fast reactor concept forms the basis for TerraPower's recently launched Natrium TM Reactor Plant. Design of the new facility requires stringent stress analysis of all reactor parts, including confirming results for crucial components with experimentation. These experiments—along with general reactor operation—must accurately measure oxygen concentration in the sodium coolant due to related corrosion mechanisms. The current Reactor Development and Technology standard plugging meter methodology was developed in the 1970s, heavily relying on the operator's visual interpretation of data. This subjectivity prompted the development of a new objective measurement method, called the UW Minimum Method, and a proposed modification to the standard instrument geometry, which involved the reduction in the diameter of the flow orifices. Both revisions, presented in this study, were designed to improve measurement repeatability/accuracy in laboratory- and reactor-scale sodium systems. Sodium oxygen levels at four concentrations (2, 4, 8, and 10 wppm) were measured by both the modified and standard instruments using the Reactor Development and Technology standard procedure and the UW Minimum Method. Smaller orifice sizes performed similarly to larger orifices but produced more consistent measurements of oxygen concentration. The UW Minimum Method offered quicker, objective, and more repeatable measurements with similar accuracy but less uncertainty than the Reactor Development and Technology standard method. As the system was purified by cold trap and not in contact with water, it was assumed that hydrogen was not present in sufficient quantity to affect plugging meter measurements. Results for all experiments were compared against vanadium wire equilibration measurements. During this work, it was found that the Reactor Development and Technology standard for the vanadium wire equilibration technique also requires updating and an improved description.
