Abstract:Compared to rigid batteries using liquid electrolytes, solid-state batteries (SSBs) offer several advantages: flexibility, prevention of leakage, suppression of dendritic formation and hydrogen evolution, as well as minimization of cathode active material dissolution. For the materialization of real-life SSBs, gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are among promising candidates. However, development of GPEs with satisfying ionic conductivity and mechanical endurance is challenging. Herein, we report on the development of polyacrylamide (PAM)/phosphonated graphene oxide (PGO) nanocomposite hydrogel electrolytes for zinc-ion batteries; PGO acts as the filler through in-situ polymerization of acrylamide in an aqueous suspension of PGO. The synthesized PAM/PGO hydrogel exhibits high ionic conductivity of 31.0 mS/cm at 30 °C compared to that of PAM (13.8 mS/cm) and PAM-GO (20.8 mS/cm). The higher ionic conductivity of PAM-PGO can be attributed to its higher hydrophilicity and electrolyte storage capacity along with its lower activation energy for ionic conduction (7.2 KJ/mol K) in comparison with that of PAM (10.1 KJ/mol K) and PAM-GO (10.2 KJ/mol K). The interaction between water against PAM, PAM-GO and PAM-PGO is investigated via density-functional theory (DFT). The MnO2-based zinc-ion battery assembled using PAM-PGO as electrolyte shows high initial capacity of 240 mAh/g, losing only 4 and 15% of its capacity after 100 and 145 cycles, respectively. Results demonstrate promising potential of PAM-PGO as a solid-state electrolyte for flexible battery applications.

Flexible Solid State Lithium Batteries Based on Graphene Inks

Abstract:Different formulations of solution-processable graphene have been characterised as electrode materials for use in electrochemical energy storage devices. Graphene was fabricated by chemical reduction of exfoliated graphene oxide (GO), and modified with either p-type (e. g. polyaniline) or n-type anionic groups (poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS(-)) and poly[2,5-bis(3-sulfonatopropoxy)-1,4-ethynylphenylene-alt-1,4-ethynylphenylene] sodium salt (PPE-SO(3)(-)) anion). Solutions of these graphene compounds were deposited on charge collecting electrodes and used as battery cathodes. Electrodes using the anionically-modified graphene inks containing anatase titanate (TiO(2)) nanoparticles show improved performance over pristine graphene ink as well as the p-type conducting polymer modified ones. In addition, the open circuit voltage of batteries based on TiO(2) has been boosted over 3 V with good cyclability when mixed with the graphene ink. Combined with a polymer electrolyte, this work suggests a feasible route towards fully printable rechargeable lithium batteries based on graphene inks. This approach is both versatile and scalable and is adaptable to a wide variety of applications.
Higher Capacity Utilization and Rate Performance of Lead Acid Battery Electrodes Using Graphene Additives

Abstract:Graphene nano-sheets such as graphene oxide, chemically converted graphene and pristine graphene [1-8] improve the capacity utilization of the positive active material of the lead acid battery. At 0.2C, graphene oxide in positive active material produces the best capacity (41% increase over the control), and improves the high-rate performance due to the higher reactivity at the graphene/active material interface. The in-situ changes in the graphene structure and oxygen states [1-2] support these, as well as higher adsorptive surface area, better graphene/lead dioxide interfacial reaction, and finer & highly utilized lead dioxide phases. The multi-scale physio-chemical mechanisms improving capacity and cycle life is thus: Electrolyte/ionic permeation improvements results from increase in pre-formation porosity, and higher interfacial reactivity at gel zone which enhances active material reversibility. Our ion transfer model reveals the optimized redox reaction in the electro-active zone of graphene-enhanced active materials. This work shows the best enhancement in the capacity of lead-acid battery positive electrode till date.

Abstract:Despite dominating the current commercial energy storage landscape, Li-ion batteries are fast approaching their theoretical limit. Meanwhile, Lithium Sulphur (Li-S) batteries, owing to their ultrahigh theoretical energy density of about 2600 Whkg -1 , low-cost, Earth-abundant, and environmentally friendly sulfur (S) cathode, are seen as promising replacements to realize energy densities beyond 500 Whkg -1 . Despite these advantages, the large-scale implementation of Li-S technology has been stymied due to several issues, one of the most deleterious of them is the dissolution and shuttling of polysulfide intermediates during cycling resulting in severe self-discharge, lowered S utilization and coulombic efficiency. Over the past decades, substantial amount of research towards mitigating 'polysulfide shuttling' shuttling has been focused on cathodic modification strategies such as infiltration of S in porous carbon, metal oxide or conducting polymer scaffold matrix which retard the mobility and loss of active material. However, such simple confinement strategies have been shown to be lacking over long cycling due to the relatively weak intermolecular interactions between the host and polysulfide molecules. An effective solution comes in the form of engineering 'sulfiphilic' materials that adsorb polysulfide species. For example, surface modification of cathodes with rGO and functionalized carbon species have shown success in reducing the redox shuttling. However, these approaches require elaborate preparation and hence, are limited in their practical usage. To overcome this, we propose a facile approach to improve cell performance via incorporation of functionalized graphenic species in the Li-S electrolyte. In this work, we have probed the impact of using tailored single-layer, heteroatom-doped graphene as electrolyte additives. We have studied the impact of their morphology and functionalization on the electrochemical performance of the cell. Results show a marked improvement in the discharge capacity and a high capacity retention of 84% over 105 cycles at 0.2 C cycling rate. The GCD cycle analysis showed an improvement in first cycle discharge plateau suggesting improved S utilization which was further substantiated by extensive postmortem analysis and polysulfide adsorption testing. Further, the electrolyte-modified cells showed an impressive three-fold and two-fold improvement in capacity at 1C and 2C cycling rates, respectively. These results demonstrated that tailored heteroatom-doped graphene in the form of electrolyte additive is an effective strategy to improve electrochemical performance via enhanced polysulfide encapsulation, cell conductivity and anode stabilization. Finally, we will present the effect of heteroatom-doped graphenic species on mitigation of polysulfide shuttling and cell performance when they are incorporated in the gel electrolyte system.

Abstract:The gel electrolyte significantly influences gel valve-regulated lead acid battery performance. To address this, the paper describes the preparation of novel polymer gel electrolytes using poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) for valve-regulated lead–acid batteries. FTIR technique is used to confirm the chemical reaction between PVA and TEOS. Electrochemical analyses such as cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were applied to optimize the concentration of PVA-TEOS polymer gel electrolyte. The optimum concentration of polymer gel electrolyte was determined as 20 wt% of TEOS in PVA (PE-1) with higher anodic peak and lower Rs and Rct values. The Galvanostatic charge–discharge tests were performed on the optimized gel system prototype battery. The highest capacity of 6.86 × 10−5 Ah at a current density of 0.2 mA cm−2 was achieved with an excellent capacity retention ratio of 85.7% over 500 cycles. The exceptional cycle performance and high capacity make PVA-TEOS gel electrolyte a promising candidate for practical battery application.

Abstract:The electrochemical act of valve-regulated lead acid batteries can be enhanced by conductive materials like metal oxides. This work aims to examine the preparation and influence of zirconia on poly(vinyl alcohol) based gel valve-regulated lead acid battery. Characterizations like Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ionic conductivity, water retention study, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic charge-discharge techniques were done. The optimized gel system exhibited a discharge capacity of 198.45 μAh cm-2 at the current density of 0.6 mA cm-2. The battery cell with an optimized gel matrix displayed a maximum discharge capacity of 22.5 μAh at a current of 20 μA. After 500 continuous cycles, the battery attained a discharge capacity retention of 91 %. The presence of zirconia will increase the electrochemical performance of gel valve-regulated lead acid batteries.
Minimization of Ion-Solvent Clusters in Gel Electrolytes Containing Graphene Oxide Quantum Dots for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:This study uses graphene oxide quantum dots (GOQDs) to enhance the Li+ -ion mobility of a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The GPE comprises a framework of poly(acrylonitrile-co-vinylacetate) blended with poly(methyl methacrylate) and a salt LiPF6 solvated in carbonate solvents. The GOQDs, which function as acceptors, are small (3-11 nm) and well dispersed in the polymer framework. The GOQDs suppress the formation of ion-solvent clusters and immobilize PF6- anions, affording the GPE a high ionic conductivity and a high Li+ -ion transference number (0.77). When assembled into Li|electrolyte|LiFePO4 batteries, the GPEs containing GOQDs preserve the battery capacity at high rates (up to 20 C) and exhibit 100% capacity retention after 500 charge-discharge cycles. Smaller GOQDs are more effective in GPE performance enhancement because of the higher dispersion of QDs. The minimization of both the ion-solvent clusters and degree of Li+ -ion solvation in the GPEs with GOQDs results in even plating and stripping of the Li-metal anode; therefore, Li dendrite formation is suppressed during battery operation. This study demonstrates a strategy of using small GOQDs with tunable properties to effectively modulate ion-solvent coordination in GPEs and thus improve the performance and lifespan of LIBs.

Abstract:The physicochemical properties of graphene and graphene materials obtained by the method of controlled detonation gas synthesis are presented. The fundamental possibility of controlling the graphene and graphene materials physicochemical properties by changing the synthesis conditions is shown. Dynamics of changes in the impedance spectra of Li-S and Li-S-Li batteries with graphene in non-aqueous liquid electrolyte 0.7 M LiIm, 0.25 M LiNO 3 , DME:DOL (2:1) were studied. The results of electrochemical testing of experimental samples and prototypes of elements of the lithium-sulfur system by the methods of cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic cycling are presented. The effect of interface stabilization was expressed in a decrease in impedance spectra, an increase in discharge capacity, and more stable long-term cycling with high parameters. The investigation showed a positive effect of graphene materials in the active mass of the multilayered S-based electrode with special design.
In-situ Crosslinked Gel Polymer Electrolytes Based on Ionic Monomers as Charge Carriers for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:In-situ polymerization is a method for fabricating lithium-ion batteries to contain solid or gel electrolytes without major manufacturing changes. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) wherein some polymer in incorporated, decreasing the volume of liquid electrolyte, have been pursued as they may be safer. One challenge with GPEs is reduced ion transport properties. In this work, macromonomers with different chain chemistry and ionic monomers are crosslinked on electrospun polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) in the presence of solvents, without conventional salt, to in-situ fabricate GPEs with elevated transference number within coin cells. These GPEs would be single-ion conductors in the case of complete ionic monomer polymerization to the crosslinked network. The effect of chain chemistry and the percentage of macromonomers and ionic monomers in the GPEs on conductivity are investigated. It is found that poly(siloxane) diacrylate (PDMSDA)- and perfluoropolyether tetra-acrylate (PFPETA)-based GPEs outperform the poly(propylene glycol) diacrylate (PPGDA)- and poly(tetrahydrofuran) diacrylate (PTHFDA)-based GPEs in terms of ionic conductivity. The highest ionic conductivity was achieved for a PDMSDA-based GPE at 4.2 × 10-4 S/cm at 23°C. Graphite/NMC-811 full cells prepared with the in-situ polymerized PDMSDA-based GPEs show capacity retention of 82.6% after 100 cycles, albeit with limited electrode utilization due to ion transport limitations.
Graphene-Wrapped Silicon Nanoparticles for All-Solid-State Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Current lithium-ion batteries consist of a graphite anode and a metal oxide cathode. Due to their relatively high energy density and rechargeability, they have enabled various applications over the past few decades. However, significant improvements to battery cost, performance, and safety for applications such as vehicle electrification require a shift to next-generation materials, such as silicon as an anode which offers higher capacity, as well as solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) which are non-flammable. Both of these technologies currently suffer challenges which have prevented their widespread adoption. Silicon suffers low conductivity, and large volume change on each cycle, subsequently causing loss in electrical contact and the formation of an unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) each cycle. This project aims to solve these challenges by wrapping silicon nanoparticles and a sacrificial spacing material with crumpled graphene sheets using a scalable, spray drying method, and coupling it with a solid electrolyte. The graphene shell provides electrical contact with the silicon and space for its expansion during lithiation. The solid electrolyte provides a safer alternative to liquid electrolytes, and further reduces the SEI formation which, with a liquid electrolyte, can leak into such crumpled structures. In this work we will present our initial results concerning how the spacing material affects the structure and how the overall structure can be modified by spray drying parameters to determine optimal conditions for capacity and cycle-life using, first, at typical, organic carbonate-based electrolyte. We will explore different spacing material candidates such as chitosan which, upon heat treatment of the sample, would not only provide space for the expansion of silicon, but the residual nitrogen-doped carbon would also act as a conductive filler inside the crumpled structure. Furthermore, we will investigate various binder systems and their impact on cycle-stability including polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polyacrylic acid (PAA), sodium alginate (SA), and cross-linked SA. Based on preliminary, both PAA and SA are shown to have improved performance compared to PVDF as well as higher cycle life, however, SA forms smoother, thinner electrode films. Cross-linked SA is also shown to increase the cycling life and decrease the capacity loss per cycle. We then explore powder mixing and solution infiltration methods to introduce high conductivity SSEs and their performance when coupled to the graphene-wrapped silicon anode structures.
Electrochemical characterization of ionic liquid based gel polymer electrolyte for lithium battery application

Abstract:High molecular weight polymer poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP), ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (EMIMFSI), and salt lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)-based free-standing and conducting ionic liquid-based gel polymer electrolytes (ILGPE) have been prepared by solution cast method. Thermal, electrical, and electrochemical properties of 80 wt% IL containing gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) are investigated by thermogravimetric (TGA), impedance spectroscopy, linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The 80 wt% IL containing GPE shows good thermal stability (~ 200 °C), ionic conductivity (6.42 × 10−4 S cm−1), lithium ion conductivity (1.40 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 30 °C), and wide electrochemical stability window (~ 4.10 V versus Li/Li+ at 30 °C). Furthermore, the surface of LiFePO4 cathode material was modified by graphene oxide, with smooth and uniform coating layer, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and with element content, as confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrum. The graphene oxide-coated LiFePO4 cathode shows improved electrochemical performance with a good charge-discharge capacity and cyclic stability up to 50 cycles at 1C rate, as compared with the without coated LiFePO4. At 30 °C, the discharge capacity reaches a maximum value of 104.50 and 95.0 mAh g−1 for graphene oxide-coated LiFePO4 and without coated LiFePO4 at 1C rate respectively. These results indicated improved electrochemical performance of pristine LiFePO4 cathode after coating with graphene oxide.

Enhancement of the Electrochemical Performances of Composite Solid-State Electrolytes by Doping with Graphene

Abstract:With high safety and good flexibility, polymer-based composite solid electrolytes are considered to be promising electrolytes and are widely investigated in solid lithium batteries. However, the low conductivity and high interfacial impedance of polymer-based solid electrolytes hinder their industrial applications. Herein, a composite solid-state electrolyte containing graphene (PVDF-LATP-LiClO4-Graphene) with structurally stable and good electrochemical performance is explored and enables excellent electrochemical properties for lithium-ion batteries. The ionic conductivity of the composite electrolyte membrane containing 5 wt% graphene reaches 2.00 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 25 °C, which is higher than that of the composite electrolyte membrane without graphene (2.67 × 10-4 S cm-1). The electrochemical window of the composite electrolyte membrane containing 5 wt% graphene reaches 4.6 V, and its Li+ transference numbers reach 0.84. Assembling this electrolyte into the battery, the LFP/PVDF-LATP-LiClO4-Graphene /Li battery has a specific discharge capacity of 107 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C, and the capacity retention rate was 91.58% after 100 cycles, higher than that of the LiFePO4/PVDF-LATP-LiClO4/Li (LFP/PLL/Li) battery, being 94 mAh g-1 and 89.36%, respectively. This work provides a feasible solution for the potential application of composite solid electrolytes.

Abstract:As the world combats climate change, energy storage solutions will be required to bridge the gap between the supply and demand of renewable energy sources. Supercapacitors have a higher power density and cyclic stability than batteries, making them more useful for selected applications. These devices utilize high surface area electrode materials, such as graphene, with enough active sites for sufficient ion adsorption to occur. Graphene hydrogels self-assemble via the hydrothermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO) dispersions. These three-dimensional structures have high specific surface areas while avoiding the use of binders. Binders usually negatively impact the conductivity of the material and require the use of conductive additives which lower specific performance data. As such, graphene hydrogels are attractive as a supercapacitor electrode material. Recently, graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) dispersions stabilized by small amounts of GO were used to form more cost-effective and better-performing hydrogels. Though GO/GNP hydrogels are a suitable alternative to those formed from dispersions of GO, the formulation of this material has yet to be optimized. In this work, we investigate the formation of GO/GNP hydrogels by assessing the influence of several input parameters on the specific surface area and mechanical stability of the hydrogel structure. A set of experiments based on a design of experiments is used. Based on the results, an optimized hydrogel is formed and characterized. Compared to typical hydrogels formed from dispersions of GO, the optimized GO/GNP hydrogel leads to significant improvements in both the specific surface area and conductivity of the material. When used in a supercapacitor, low internal resistance and high stability are observed while volumetric capacitance is increased by up to over 400%.
Facilitating Ionic Conduction in the Valve‐Regulated Lead Acid Battery by Poly(vinyl alcohol)‐Halloysite Nano‐Clay Gel Polymer Electrolyte

Abstract:PVA‐HNC gel electrolytes are formulated for valve‐regulated lead acid battery. HNC facilitates ionic conductivity in PVA gel electrolyte. 4 wt% HNC/PVA is identified as optimal gel electrolyte. The battery shows 6.858 μAh discharge capacity at 7.5 μA cm−2 current density. Discharge capacity retention is 87.5% after 500 cycles. One of the factors that affect the performance of the value‐regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery is gel electrolyte. To address this, a gel polymer electrolyte comprising halloysite nano‐clay in a poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix is formulated and the electrochemical performance is studied. Interaction between halloysite nano‐clay and poly(vinyl alcohol) is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). To optimize the concentration of gel electrolytes, cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) are utilized. Galvanostatic charge‐discharge (GCD) tests are performed on a prototype battery comprising of an optimized gel electrolyte. The battery shows the highest discharge capacity of 6.858 μAh at 7.5 μA cm−2 current density and achieves admirable discharge capacity retention of 87.5% after 500 cycles. Hydrogen‐bonded halloysite nano‐clay and poly(vinyl alcohol) can be employed as gel electrolytes in VRLA batteries.

Modality-Tunable Exfoliated N-Doped Graphene as Effective Electrolyte Additive for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:While chemically doped graphene has shown great promise, the lack of cost-effective manufacturing has hindered its use. This study utilizes a facile fabrication approach for modality-tunable N-doped graphene via thermal annealing of aqueous-phase-exfoliated few-layered graphene from a Taylor-Couette reactor. This method demonstrates a high level of N-doping (27 atom % N) and offers modality tunability of the C-N bond without foregoing scalability and green chemistry principles. The resulting N-doped graphene, with varying N content and doping modality, is utilized in the lithium-sulfur battery electrolyte to address low ionic conductivity, lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttling, and Li anode instability. The study reveals that higher N content and pyridinic N modality graphene in the electrolyte positively influence battery performance. The results are 2-fold: higher overall N content improves capacity retention (73%) after 225 cycles at 0.2 C, and pyridinic-type nitrogen demonstrates the best performance at high C rates, exhibiting a 4-fold capacity increase relative to the reference cell at 2 C. Further, the computational study validates the adsorption affinity of LiPS to pyridinic nitrogen and improved Li+ mobility on the graphene backbone observed experimentally. This first experimental study on the impact of N-dopant concentration and modality on electrochemical performance provokes insights into tailoring N functionalization to achieve superior electrochemical performance.

Abstract:An alkaline gel polymer electrolyte: poly (acrylic acid)-zinc acetate (Zn(AC)2)-aquatic colloidal graphene (ACG) solution (PAA-Zn(AC)2-ACG) was prepared by solution casting method. The properties of PAA-Zn(AC)2-ACG were studied by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), AC impedance, cyclic voltammetry (CV) and water retention ability. The results show that PAA-Zn(AC)2-ACG exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 407.9 mS·cm–1, an electrochemical stability window of 1.7 V, and 72.5% water retention ability. Flexible zinc-air batteries (ZABs) with PAA-Zn(AC)2-ACG gel polymer electrolyte has an better discharge capacity of 672 mAh g, a continuous charge and discharge duration was 43.3 h, 130 cycles, and a cycle efficiency of 64.8%. Finally, flexible ZABs shows advantageous prospects and proving the feasibility of flexible ZABs.

Abstract:The use of carbon materials as additives in lead-acid battery electrodes is known to have a positive effect on battery performance via the increase in the battery cycle life. However, every type of carbon material has a different impact. Furthermore, the mechanism of performance improvement must be clarified. In the present work, graphene was added into a negative active material (NAM) used in a battery cell. The cell was tested under a partial state of charge condition at an extreme discharge cycle. The NAM plates were also tested using cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results showed that the graphene additive increases the conductance of the NAM. Scanning electron images showed refined particle sizes of the sulfates. A combination of decreasing the internal resistance of the battery and particle refinement of the NAM was found to be responsible for the improved cycle life.

Abstract:Lead‐acid batteries suffer from water evaporation that needs water addition to maintain their performance. Electrolyte immobilization using fumed silica‐based gel is one of the methods to overcome this issue. The high viscosity and increased internal resistance of the gel lead to a low capacity of battery. Herein, cellulose‐based hydrogel electrolyte are proposed. The cellulose hydrogel is prepared from coir fibers. The common method to improve battery performance and safety issues related to electrolyte leakage and evaporation in lead‐acid batteries (LABs) is by electrolyte immobilization. Herein, a hydrogel electrolyte is proposed by immobilizing sulfuric acid within a cellulose‐based hydrogel derived from coir fibers. The hydrogel is prepared using two steps: cellulose purification and hydrogel formation. In the first step, lignin and hemicellulose in coir fibers are removed using mechanical and chemical treatments to produce cellulose pulp. Then, cellulose hydrogel is prepared from the pulp using the dissolution‐coagulation route in an alkali‐urea system. The hydrogel is soaked in sulfuric acid to produce hydrogel electrolyte. The cellulose hydrogel has good mechanical strength, with a tensile strength of about 4.5 MPa and Young's modulus of about 39.02 MPa. The ionic conductivity of the hydrogel electrolyte is ≈0.183 mS cm−1, approaching that of the sulfuric acid electrolyte used in LABs. Although the discharge capacity of cell using the hydrogel electrolyte is slightly lower than that of free sulfuric acid electrolyte (1907 vs. 2051 mAh g−1), its stability is better. The study offers gel polymer electrolyte derived from agricultural waste coir fibers for use in LABs in an environmentally friendly and sustainable manner.

Abstract:Lithium-ion technology has led a revolution of portable electronics and is being widely used for large-scale applications such as electric vehicles. However, the main problem associated with the shortage of lithium resource poses a challenge for the traditional lithium-ion prototype and calls for exploration of alternative batteries. The bottleneck of the lithium-ion battery, as such, has prompted the study of sodium-, potassium-, and aluminum-ion batteries, which have the distinct advantage of abundant resources. Graphene materials as electrodes, on the one hand, can actively take part in the electrochemical reactions. On the other hand, they can act as conductive additives to improve kinetics and as buffers to support the structural integrity of the electrodes. In this Review, we discuss the effects of graphene on electrochemical performance of the electrodes in the three battery systems, with emphasis on the general structural design principles and underlying mechanisms which enable the performance improvement. We elucidate the benefits of the graphene materials and highlight the examples of tailored nanostructures that create high-energy-density, fast-charging, and long-lasting performance. We end with an outlook of existing challenges and future opportunities.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
