Abstract:Composite gel polymer electrolytes (CGPEs) have received wide attention due to their great potential to improve the safety and cycling stability of lithium metal batteries. However, the poor interface compatibility between the filler and polymer in CGPEs severely hinders lithium-ion (Li + ) pathways and limits cell performance. Herein, we propose an Al(EtO) 3 nanowires framework that can trigger poly (ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDE) to undergo ring opening polymerization, thus inducing polymer tight combination on the surface of Al(EtO) 3 nanowires framework and dividing the polymer matrix into mesh units, contributing to ordered Li + transport and dendrite-free deposition on the metallic anode. Such a CGPE with highly conductive and interface compatibility facilitates a high-performance quasi-solid-state Li||Li cell with an excellent long-term cycling stability for over 3000 h without a short circuit and registers a high capacity of 146.9 mAh g −1 after 46 cycles at a mass loading of 6 mg cm −2 . Solid-state nuclear magnetic technology clearly clarifies the transport path of lithium ions in Al(EtO) 3 -based gel polymer electrolyte (AGPE). The results open up a new way to improve the electrochemical performances of composite electrolyte and promote its commercial application process.

Abstract:Solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries have been considered as the candidate for the next generation power system for their outstanding performance in energy density and safety. Nevertheless, while solid-state electrolytes are still plagued by incompatible interphases, Li metal anode also has been hindered by dendrites growth. Herein, a facile in-situ synthesis of gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) with polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PETEA) as the hybrid polymer skeleton, for the first time, is employed to deal with these issues. The GPE displays high ionic conductivity (7.6 mS cm−1) at room temperature and high stability towards Li metal anode. More interestingly, the in-situ GPE can construct a uniform and stable SEI on the surface of Li metal anode and guarantee a long cycling life (>500 cycles) with a capacity retention of 90% in the LiFePO4|GPE|Li battery. This GPE with hybrid polymer skeletons opens up an innovative idea for the electrolyte design that will eventually promote the practical application of lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Polymer-based solid electrolytes (PSEs) offer great promise in developing lithium metal batteries due to their attractive features such as safety, light weight, low cost, and high processability. However, a PSE-based lithium battery usually requires a relatively high temperature (60 °C or above) to complete charge and discharge due to the poor ionic conductivity of PSEs. Herein, a gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) film with a supramolecular network structure through a facile one-step photopolymerization is designed and developed. The crosslinked structure and quadruple hydrogen bonding fulfil the GPEs with high thermal stability and good mechanical property with a maximum tensile strain of 48%. The obtained GPEs possess a high ionic conductivity of 3.8 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 25 °C and a decomposition voltage ≥ 4.6 V (vs Li/Li+ ). The cells assembled with LiFePO4 cathode and Li anode, present an initial discharge specific capacity of 155.6 mAh g-1 and a good cycling efficiency with a capacity retention rate of 81.1% after 100 charges/discharge cycles at 0.1 C at ambient temperature. This work encompasses a route to develop high performance PSEs that can be operated at room temperature for future lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:The uncontrollable lithium (Li) dendrites growth and complex electrode/electrolyte interface (EEI) problems are hindering the further application of high energy density lithium metal batteries (LMBs) in practice. Herein, a bilayer heterostructure gel polymer electrolyte (BGPE) is designed by directly curing functional boron-containing monomers on the electrode surface to ensure excellent conductivity while solving the interface problems, achieving durable high voltage resistance and Li dendrites suppression. The unoccupied p-orbital boron moiety of the 3D crosslinked network in BGPE not only improves the Li+ transference number (0.78), but also enhances the interfacial stability of the Li metal and inhibits the dendrites growth by anchoring PF6- anions and regulating the uniform Li deposition, thus ensuring a long cycle for Li/BGPE/Li cells. In addition, the functional additives tris(trimethylsilyl) phosphite and tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane can preferentially oxidize and decompose to form stable B, F, and Si-rich EEIs, and effectively regulate the uniform growth of EEI. Thus, the LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2/BGPE/Li and LiFePO4/BGPE/Li full cells exhibit stable cycling and excellent rate performance. This work provides a guiding design direction to address the EEI problems for high energy density LMBs. A bilayer heterostructure gel polymer electrolyte (BGPE) for lithium metal batteries is prepared by in-situ curing functional boron-containing monomers on the electrode surface with functional additives tris(trimethylsilyl) phosphite and tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane. Abstract:Rechargeable lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have gained much attention recently. However, the short lifespan and safety issues restrict their commercial applications. Here we report a novel gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) based on lithiated poly(vinyl chloride-r-acrylic acid) (PVCAALi) to realize dendrite-suppressing and long-term stable lithium metal cycling. PVC chains ensure the quick gelation process and high electrolyte uptake, and lithiated PAA segments enable the increase of mechanical strength, acceleration of lithium-ion transmission and improvement of interfacial compatibility. PVCAALi GPE showed much higher mechanical strength compared with other free-standing GPEs in previous works. It displays a superior ionic conductivity of 1.50 mS cm−1 and a high lithium-ion transference number of 0.59 at room temperature. Besides, the lithiated GPE exhibits excellent interfacial compatibility with lithium metal anodes. Lithium symmetrical cells with PVCAALi GPE yield low hysteresis of 50 mV over 1000 h at 1.0 mA cm−2. And the possible mechanism of the lithiated GPE with improved lithium-ion transfer and interfacial property was discussed. Accordingly, both the Li4Ti5O12/Li and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) cells assembled with PVCAALi GPE show outstanding electrochemical performance, retaining high discharge capacities of 133.8 mAh g−1 and 603.8 mAh g−1 over 200 cycles, respectively. This work proves excellent application potential of the highly effective and low-cost PVCAALi GPE in safe and long-life LMBs.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) are connected by chemical reactions to form a PEG–CD network, which is blended with polyvinylidene fluoride and a liquid electrolyte to prepare a novel composite gel electrolyte for lithium metal batteries. Such an electrolyte has good thermal stability, ionic conductivity, and ionic transport number at room temperature. Both LiFePO4/Li and LiCoO2/Li batteries with such an electrolyte show excellent cycle stability at room temperature. Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with extremely high energy densities have several advantages among energy storage equipment. However, the uncontrolled growth of dendrites and the flammable liquid electrolytes (LEs) often cause safety accidents. All solid‐state batteries seem to be the ultimate choice, but solvent‐free electrolytes usually fail in terms of conductivity at room temperature. Therefore, gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) with a simple manufacturing process and high ionic conductivity are considered as the most competitive candidates to resolve the present difficulties. Herein, we design a polymeric network structure via esterification and amidation reactions between polyethylene glycol (PEG) and carbon dots (CDs). After incorporation with polyvinylidene fluoride and some LEs, the as‐prepared PEG–CDs composite electrolytes (PCCEs) show a high ionic conductivity of 5.5 mS/cm and an ion transference number of 0.71 at room temperature, as well as good flexibility and thermostability. When the PCCEs are assembled with lithium metal anodes and LiFePO4 or LiCoO2 cathodes, both the cycling stability and the retention rate of these LMBs show excellent performance at room temperature.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal batteries have the advantage of high energy density, but the Li dendrites risk piercing the separator and causing a short circuit in the battery. Replacing the liquid electrolytes with gel electrolytes is considered an effective strategy to solve the issues. Herein, a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based gel electrolyte, improved with multifunctional supramolecular polymer (MSP), was prepared to enhance the cycling stability and energy density of quasi-solid-state Li metal batteries. The MSP addictive constructs a cross-linked network structure with PVDF-HFP matrix and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) through hydrogen bonding, improving the mechanical strength of the composite gel electrolyte (PH-10%MSP-GE) to against the growth of Li dendrites. Moreover, the pre-lithiated sulfonic acid groups, conductive polyether groups of MSP, and the attraction of TFSI- anions, promote the Li-ion transportation of the composite gel electrolyte. Finally, the Li||Li symmetric cell cycle stably for over 450 h. The Li||LiFePO4 full cell demonstrates a high energy density and excellent cycling stability for over 600 cycles, with a capacity retention rate of up to 98.7%. This work provides valuable insights into the preparation of multifunctional composite gel polymer electrolytes and competitive quasi-solid-state Li metal batteries.
Multiscale Structural Gel Polymer Electrolytes with Fast Li+ Transport for Long‐Life Li Metal Batteries

Abstract:Multiscale Structural Gel Polymer Electrolytes (GPEs), including micrometer‐scale poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) matrix, SiO2 nanoparticles, Zeolite Socony Mobil‐5 with a sub‐nanometer channel, Li salt, and carbonate ester, are fabricated for Li metal batteries. The multiscale structural GPEs can expedite Li+ ions transport and build stable interphase on Li metal anodes, thereby reducing Li dendrite growth and delivering outstanding electrochemical performance. Li metal batteries (LMBs) are considered as promising candidates for future rechargeable batteries with high energy density. However, Li metal anode (LMA) is extensively sensitive to general liquid electrolytes, leading to unstable interphase and dendrites growth. Herein, a novel gel polymer electrolyte consisting of a micro‐nanostructured poly(vinylidene fluoride‐co‐hexafluoropropylene) matrix and inorganic fillers of Zeolite Socony Mobil‐5 (ZSM‐5) and SiO2 nanoparticles, is fabricated to expedite Li+ ions transport and suppress Li dendrite growth. Due to the Lewis acid interaction, SiO2 can absorb amounts of PF6− and promote the dissociation of LiPF6. The specific sub‐nanometer pore structure of ZSM‐5 greatly enhances the Li+ ion transference number. These structures can restrain the decomposition of electrolytes and build stable interphase on LMA. Therefore, the Li||Ni0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 full cell maintains 92% capacity retention after 300 cycles at 1 C (1 C ≈190 mAh g−1) in carbonate electrolyte. This multiscale design provides an effective strategy for electrolyte exploration in high‐performance LMBs.

Abstract:Recently, poor security in conventional liquid electrolytes and high interfacial resistance at the electrode/electrolyte interface are the most challenging barriers for the expanded application of lithium batteries. In this regard, easy processing and flexible composite ionic liquid gel polymer electrolytes (ILGPEs) supported by Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) are fabricated and investigated. The electrolyte is effectively combined with good electrochemical performances and thermal safety. Among these, the effects of different types of fillers such as the inert filler-SiO2 and the active filler-LAGP on the ionic conductivity were studied in detail. LAGP particles can not only effectively reduce the crystallinity of the polymer matrix but also provide lithium ions and act as the lithium-ion conductor leading to higher ionic conductivity and Li+ ion transference number. Abstract:Due to their high energy density, lithium/sodium metal batteries (LMBs/SMBs) are expected to be the next generation of energy storage systems. However, the further application of alkali metal batteries based on liquid electrolytes is limited due to increasing safety concerns. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs), which combine the advantages of the high ionic conductivity of liquid electrolytes and excellent mechanical properties of solid polymer electrolytes, are considered to play an irreplaceable role in the realization of high-performance alkali metal batteries. In this work, a flexible boron-containing GPE (B-GPE) with a cross-linked polymer network structure is prepared by a UV-induced process. The as-prepared B-GPE exhibits good ionic conductivity and has an extremely high ion transference number due to the electron-withdrawing effect of the boron moiety and the facile electrolyte uptake ability of the ethylene oxide chain. Furthermore, a "gentle" electrode/electrolyte contact is designed by a one-step in situ polymerization method, which can enhance ion transport within the electrode and at the electrode/electrolyte interface due to the presence of a continuous polymer phase for ion conduction. Therefore, LMBs and SMBs containing B-GPE are able to effectively inhibit the growth of dendrites while exhibiting excellent cycling stability. These comprehensive results indicate that this novel B-GPE possesses potential applications for high-performance alkali metal batteries.

Abstract:The leakage of liquid electrolyte and the formation of lithium dendrites pose challenges to safety and stability of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). The appearance of gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) has obviously improved the safety of traditional LMBs. However, the limited inhibition of GPE on lithium dendrites is detrimental to the safety of LMBs. Herein, a kind of poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/gelatin (GN) GPE with high ionic conductivity, high-temperature resistance, and flame-retardancy, was prepared by electrospinning and soaking method. Utilizing the electrospinning network of PVDF-HFP, its affinity to liquid electrolytes, makes this GPE more beneficial to ions transport and the formation of gel. And, the GN with sol-gel properties, enhances the mechanical property (13.5 MPa) of HFP-GN GPE. Meanwhile, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) suggest that the attraction of polar groups of GN to Li+ can regulate the distribution of Li+ and protect Li anodes. Consequently, the application of HFP-GN GPEs to LMBs with cathodes of LiFePO4 and LiCoO2 deliver excellent electrochemical performances: after 300 cycles, the LiFePO4/HFP-GN GPE/Li battery keeps a low capacity decay rate of 0.09% at 5 C; after 400 cycles at 2 C, the LiCoO2/HFP-GN GPE/Li cell retains a high capacity retention of 74%. This GPE is demonstrated for the application prospect of safe LMBs.

Cellulose-based Gel-Type Electrolyte Fabricated by Lyophilization to Enable Uniform Li+ Ion Flux Distribution for Stable Li Metal Anodes with High-Rate Capability

Abstract:Lithium metal has been extensively investigated as the optimal anode for the next-generation rechargeable batteries. However, the high reactivity of Li with liquid electrolytes and the undesired dendrite growth predisposes the battery to destruction and even safety problems. Herein, a methyl cellulose-based gel polymer electrolyte (MC-GPE) with three-dimensional (3D) networks fabricated via lyophilization is implemented to guide the uniform Li+ deposition and suppress dendrite growth. Owing to the high absorption to LiPF6-based liquid electrolyte, the ionic conductivity of MC-GPE can reach up to around 0.7 mS cm–1 at ambient temperature, almost twice as large as the Polyethylene (PE) separator (Celgard 2730) immersed by the same electrolyte (0.43 mS cm–1). Accordingly, highly reversible Li plating/stripping with a stable polarization (< 40 mV), high coulombic efficiency (CE) (99%) and long lifespan (>400 h) can be obtained (1 mA cm−2, 1 mAh cm−2). The assembled Li-metal cells coupled with LiFePO4 cathodes show remarkable cycling stability and rate performance (157 mAh g–1 after 200 cycles at 1 C and 115 mAh g–1 after 400 cycles at 5 C) with high CE (∼100%). These results indicate the obtained MC-GPE can promote uniform Li+ ion flux distribution, suppress growth of Li dendrite and improve the cycle stability of Li metal anodes. This work paves a way for the application of the cellulose-based GPEs in the future Li-metal batteries.

Abstract:Developing gel polymer electrolyte with crosslinking structure is one of the best choices to improve the mechanical strength of gel polymer electrolyte without sacrificing its lithium ion transportation properties. However, the cost is always too high. Herein, a novel gel polymer electrolyte based on 3D cross-linked chitosan-PEGGE macromolecule network was designed and synthesized through a simple and environmental harmless method, with sustainable and cheap chitosan as major material. The obtained gel polymer electrolyte shows improved mechanical strength of 5.5 MPa, which is higher than other gel polymer electrolytes without inert frameworks. The optimized gel polymer electrolyte exhibits a good lithium ionic conductivity of 2.74×10-4 S cm-1 with a superior lithium ion transfer number of 0.869 at 25˚C. Lithium battery assembled with this gel polymer electrolyte demonstrates an initial discharge capacity of 146.8 mA h g-1, which retains 88.49% after 360 cycles at 0.2 C. Moreover, this gel polymer electrolyte possesses good interfacial compatibility with lithium anode. Therefore, the growth of lithium dendrite is greatly delayed. This research proves the great possibility of applying sustainable and cost-effective chitosan into gel polymer electrolyte and lithium batteries.
Self‐Enhancing Gel Polymer Electrolyte by In Situ Construction for Enabling Safe Lithium Metal Battery

Abstract:Lithium metal battery (LMB) possessing a high theoretical capacity is a promising candidate of advanced energy storage devices. However, its safety and stability are challenged by lithium dendrites and the leakage of liquid electrolyte. Here, a self-enhancing gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) is created by in situ polymerizing 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) in the nanofibrous skeleton for enabling safe LMB. The nanofiber membrane possesses a better affinity with poly-DOL (PDOL) than commercial separator for constructing homogeneous GPE with enhanced ion conductivity. Furthermore, polydopamine is introduced on nanofiber membrane to form hydrogen bonding with PDOL and bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)imide anion, dramatically improving the mechanical strength, ionic conductivity, and transference number of GPE. Besides, molecular dynamic simulation is used to reveal the intrinsic factors of high ionic conductivity and reinforcing effect in the meantime. Consequently, the LiFePO4 //Li batteries using self-enhancing GPE show extraordinary cyclic stability over 800 cycles under high current density of 2 C, with a capacity decay of 0.021% per cycle, effectively suppressing the growth of lithium dendrites. This ingenious strategy is expected to manufacture advanced performance and high safety LMBs and compatible with the current battery production.

In situ Gel Electrolytes for the Interfacial Regulation of Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:By changing the state of the liquid electrolyte through in situ polymerization reaction, the prepared gel electrolyte effectively suppressed the interfacial side reactions. In situ curing also realized the integration of electrodes and enhanced the cycle stability of lithium metal batteries. The leakage of liquid electrolytes had been solved while improving the safety property. With the popularity and development of electronic devices, the demand for lithium batteries is increasing, which also puts high demands on the energy density, cycle life and safety of lithium batteries. Gel electrolytes achieve both of these requirements by curing the electrolytes to reduce the interfacial side reactions of lithium metal batteries. The ionic conductivity of the gel electrolytes prepared by in situ curing reach 8.0×10−4 S cm−1, and the ionic mobility number is 0.53. Meanwhile, the gel electrolytes maintain a stable electrochemical window of 1.0–5.0 V. Benefited with the interfacial regulation of PEGDA gel electrolytes, the gel lithium metal batteries show better cycling stability, and achieved 97 % capacity retention after 200 cycles (0.2 C) with a lower increasing rate of impedance.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries are considered promising contenders for the next generation of high-energy-density batteries. However, lithium metal anode with inhomogeneous lithium deposition in liquid electrolyte causes the uncontrolled growth of lithium dendrites. Owing to the high dielectric constant, thermal stability, and electromechanical stability of polyvinylidene fluoride, we designed a novel gel polymer electrolyte consisting of porous polyvinylidene fluoride polymer matrix, liquid electrolyte, ethylene carbonate, and MIL-125 (Ti) (Ti8O8(OH)4(BDC)6, BDC = 1,4-benzene dicarboxylate) for facilitating Li+ transfer and alleviating the growth of lithium dendrites. The high dielectric constant environment facilitates the dissociation of Li+, and the porous polymer matrix structure accommodates more Li+ for fast transfer. Ethylene carbonate reduces the crystallinity of the polymer matrix and improves the ionic conductivity. MIL-125 (Ti) nanoparticles with surface area and uniform micropores improve toughness for enhancing mechanical property, and synergistically promote the Li+ transfer for building stable interfacial phase to alleviate the growth of Li dendrites. Therefore, the gel polymer electrolyte has high ionic conductivity of ~ 1.50 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 25°C, and quasi-solid-state Li/LiFePO4 battery has high discharge capacity of 153.5 mAh g-1 after 250 cycles at 25°C and 0.3 C.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) with high energy densities are highly desirable for energy storage. However, they suffer from the low Columbic efficiency (CE) because of the continuous breaking of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and formation of dead lithium generated from the infinite volumetric changes of lithium metal anodes. Herein, a tough and elastic gel electrolyte is designed to create a dynamic interface between lithium metal and gels to tackle this grand challenge. A stable cycling of lithium metal anodes is achieved with a high CE of 99.3% for 1000 cycles and ultralong cycle life of 2,000 h, with traditional ether electrolytes. In-situ optical microscopy insights into the interfacial evolution of the lithium electrode employing gel as electrolyte reveals the uniform Li plating/stripping behavior and the eliminated bubble phenomenon observed in Celgard system, yielding in-depth comprehensions of the precipitation mechanism and interfacial establishment in gel-based LMBs.

Abstract:Lithium-metal anodes with high theoretical capacity and ultralow redox potential are regarded as a "holy grail" of the next-generation energy-storage industry. Nevertheless, Li inevitably reacts with conventional liquid electrolytes, resulting in uneven electrodeposition, unstable solid electrolyte interphase, and Li dendrite formation that all together lead to a decrease in active lithium, poor battery performance, and catastrophic safety hazards. Here, we report a unique nonporous gel polymer electrolyte (NP-GPE) with a uniform and dense structure, exhibiting an excellent combination of mechanical strength, thermal stability, and high ionic conductivity. The nonporous structure contributed to a uniform distribution of lithium ions for dendrite-free lithium deposition, and Li/NP-GPE/Li symmetric cells can maintain an extremely low and stable polarization after cycling at a high current density of 10 mA cm-2. This work provides an insight that the NP-GPE can be considered as a candidate for practical applications for lithium-metal anodes.
Dendrite-Free Solid-State Li Metal Batteries Enabled by Bifunctional Polymer Gel Electrolytes

Abstract:Gel electrolytes have attracted great attention due to the high ionic conductivity and superior mechanical strength. However, poor interfacial stability between Li metal and gel electrolytes hinders their practical application. Here, a double polymer network gel electrolyte (DPNGE) is prepared via photopolymerizing branched acrylate on the poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) matrix to solve this issue. This DPNGE possesses an enhanced ionic conductivity of 9.5 × 10–4 S cm–1 at room temperature and a wide electrochemical stability window up to 5.0 V. The assembled Li/DPNGE/LiFePO4 batteries demonstrated a 153.7 mA h g–1 initial discharge capacity at 0.5 C and keep 92.7% capacity retention after more than 500 cycles. Moreover, a systematic analysis confirms that we construct a stable solid electrolyte interphase layer for homogeneous deposition and a stable cycle.
