Abstract:We reported a simple, robust, and highly sensitive temperature sensor using intrinsic Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed by means of bending a tapered microfiber, embedded in polydimethylsiloxane. The outer temperature perturbations modulate the refractive index of the polymer through thermo-optic and thermal expansion effects of the polymer. This leads to a phase difference between interfering guided modes through the bent-microfiber, which ultimately results prominent wavelength shift in the transmission spectrum. The sensor exhibits a linear temperature response with a sensitivity as high as -6.25nm/°C over the temperature range from 24° to 40 °C. The sensitivity of the sensor increases as wavelength increases.

Abstract:A fibre-optic strain sensor based on a gourd-shaped joint multimode fibre (MMF) sandwiched between two single-mode fibres (SMFs) is described both theoretically and experimentally. The cladding layers of the two MMFs are reshaped to form a hemisphere using an electrical arc method and spliced together, yielding the required gourd shape. The gourd-shaped section forms a Fabry-Perot cavity between the ends of two adjacent but non-contacting multimode fibres' core. The effectiveness of the multimode interference based on the Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) formed within the multimode inter-fibre section is greatly improved resulting in an experimentally determined strain sensitivity of -2.60 pm/με over the range 0-1000 με. The sensing characteristics for temperature and humidity of this optical fibre strain sensor are also investigated.

Abstract:An integrated all-fiber sensor based on ring-core fiber (RCF)-embedded long-period fiber grating (LPFG) cascaded RCF-Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for measuring curvature and temperature is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The RCF-embedded LPFG section is fabricated by periodically embedding hundreds of micrometers sized RCF into SMF by employing the mature, low-cost cleaving splicing method (CSM). Due to the large core diameter mismatch, the energy within the core is exceeded into the cladding mode more effectively, and the periodic refractive index modulation gives our sensor has a compact size with only three-period SMF-RCF structures and a total length of 2.8 mm. To measure curvature and temperature simultaneously, an RCF-based MZI with an RCF length of 1 mm is cascaded behind LPFG by employing the CSM. Thus, there are two dips corresponding to LPFG and MZI occur in the transmission spectrum. The dips show different responses to curvature and temperature changes. The maximum curvature and temperature sensitivities of the two dips are 26.61, -1.67 nm/m(-1), 0.053 nm/.C, and 0.059 nm/degrees C, respectively. By utilizing a 2 x 2 matrix, simultaneous measurement of curvature and temperature can be achieved. The integrated all-fiber sensor has a compact size, low cost, and high sensitivity possessing more competitivity in complex, harsh applications.

Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer, composed of two core-offset tapered joints (COTJ-MZI), is proposed and experimentally verified for high sensitivity strain sensing. The COTJ-MZI is handily fabricated by core-offset fusion splicing and tapering based on all single-mode fiber (SMF). The fiber cores form stepped cores within the COTJs. The transmission spectra with different core-offset values and interference lengths are obtained and theoretically analyzed. Benefitting from the stepped cores in the COTJ structure, the mode coupling points are able to be modulated easily by the applied strain. A strain sensitivity of −108.0 pm/$\mu \varepsilon $ (0-$400~\mu \varepsilon$ ) and −47.6 pm/$\mu \varepsilon $ (400-1200 $\mu \varepsilon$ ) is achieved. In addition, the temperature response is also characterized as low as 23.3 pm/°C. With the advantages of low cost and high sensitivity, the COTJ-MZI sensor is competitive candidates in the field of strain measurement.

Abstract:In this article, an in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (ILMZI)-based temperature sensor of a sandwich-like composite structure was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Using simple cleaving and splicing operations, ILMZI was formed by compactly sandwiching a section of four-hole microstructure optical fiber (FHMF) of ultrashort length between two segments of multimode fibers and single-mode fibers in turn. Due to the large thermo-optic coefficient difference between the silica and air modes in FHMF, the sensor achieves a comparable sensitivity of 67.29 pm/degrees C over a wide dynamic range of 20.8 degrees C-100.4 degrees C. Because the sensing area length is only a few hundred micrometers, the long-term stability and anti-interference of the sensor are greatly enhanced. In addition, the large airhole design confines the propagation mode in silica medium by total internal reflection, reducing the interaction between the liquid sample and the sensing element, making the sensor inert to the ambient refractive index. The maximum response deviation of the sensor under microvibration disturbances is 3.51 x 10(-4) nm/degrees C, and the maximum cross-sensitivity under strain disturbances is only 0.0018 degrees C/mu epsilon. The proposed sensor is excellent in performance, easy in fabrication, simple in structure, and low in cost, which can be expected to be used in practical temperature sensing applications without any additional packaging.

Abstract:A novel offset-core single micro-tapered fiber-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with high strain sensi-tivity is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. This novel structure is fabricated only by using ordinary single mode fiber (SMF) and a fiber fusion splicer, of which the offset-core distance is about 12 mu m and micro -tapered fiber length is about 490 mu m. A high strain sensitivity of-34.61 pm/mu epsilon is obtained, which is 10 times higher than that (3 pm/mu epsilon) of common inline optic-fiber MZI and 6 times higher than that (6 pm/mu epsilon) of common inline optic-fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI). In addition, the length (-490 mu m) of this novel MZI is much smaller than that of an ordinary inline optic-fiber MZI (-2 cm) with advantages of high sensitivity, low-cost, and easy fabrication. The novel optic-fiber MZI proposed in this paper enriches the manufacturing methods for fiber-optic MZIs, which has a good application prospect for strain sensing.

Abstract:A Z-shape fiber structure fabricated by CO2 laser is proposed here for the simultaneous measurement of axial strain and temperature. The Z-shape structure is fabricated by simply exposing a single mode fiber (SMF) to the focused CO2 laser that causes the unbalanced residual stress relaxation between the upper surface and lower surface of the fiber. The laser irradiation also gives rise to efficient coupling between the core mode and cladding modes. Then, a Mach-Zehnder interferometer is prepared. Experiments and theoretical analyses have been carried out to verify the feasibility of applying the proposed structure to simultaneous strain and temperature measurement. Experimental results indicate that the sensitivities of strain and temperature obtained by the two resonant dips are 129.78 pm/με, 43.57 pm/°C, and 51.05 pm/με, 62.1 pm/°C, respectively. Thanks to its highly sensitive spectral response, the proposed sensor will have attractive potential applications in dual parameter fiber sensing.

Abstract:This paper presents the design of a strain-sensitive, dual ball-shaped tunable zone (DBT) taper structure for light intensity modulation. Unlike conventional tapered optical fibers, the DBT incorporates a central light field modulation zone within the taper. By precisely controlling the fusion parameters between single-mode fiber (SMF) and polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF), the ellipticity of the modulation zone can be finely adjusted, thereby optimizing spectral characteristics. Theoretical analysis based on polarization mode interference (PMI) coupling confirms that the DBT structure achieves a more uniform spectral response. In cantilever beam strain tests, the DBT exhibits high sensitivity and a highly linear intensity–strain response (R2 = 0.99), with orthogonal linear polarization mode interference yielding sensitivities of 0.049 dB/με and 0.023 dB/με over the 0–244.33 με strain range. Leveraging the DBT's light intensity sensitivity, a temperature-compensated intensity difference and ratio calculation method is proposed, effectively minimizing the influence of light source fluctuations on sensor performance and enabling high-precision strain measurements with errors as low as ±6 με under minor temperature variations. The DBT fiber device, combined with this innovative demodulation technique, is particularly suitable for precision optical sensing applications. The DBT structure, combined with the novel demodulation method, is particularly well-suited for high-precision and stable measurements in industrial monitoring, aerospace, civil engineering, and precision instruments for micro-deformation sensing.

Abstract:An in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with a micro-cavity (MC) exploited for strain and temperature simultaneous measurement. The research is carried out experimentally and simulatively. The MC fabricated by splicing a hollow quartz tube between two single-mode fibers serves as a light splitter for the two arms of MZI beams and a Fabry–Pérot interferometer (FPI) component at the same time. Thus both functions of the MZI and FPI were implemented in a single sensor. With aid of the different response of the MZI and FPI to the strain and temperature, this device can achieve a simultaneous measurement and the strain/temperature cross-sensitivity issue has been alleviated. Such a composite interference structure, possess the characteristics of easy making, high performance-price ratio provides a promising approach to implement strain and high-temperature simultaneous measurement.

Abstract:In this paper, an all-single-mode fiber strain sensor based on a bent structure Mach-Zehnder interferometer (BS-MZI) is proposed. This sensor consists of two identical bent structures, one of which excites the cladding modes, and the other couples them back to the core. Interference occurs when the cladding and the core modes meet each other. Therefore, the bent structures function as an MZI. The bent structures are fabricated by releasing the pulse of the CO2 laser along the specific designed paths. The fiber shaping method based on CO2 laser polishing is flexible, which is demonstrated in detail. The unique geometrical shape of the bent structures brings high strain sensitivity to the sensor. As a consequence, the sensor with a length of 9.6 mm exhibits an ultrahigh strain sensitivity, which reaches 165 pm/μϵ. Experimental results show that the strain responses of the BS-MZIs are highly correlated with their interference lengths and the modulated lengths. Its temperature-strain cross-sensitivity is as low as 0.21 μϵ/°C. Moreover, the sensor exhibits high stability and repeatability in strain measurement, which makes it a promising sensor in strain measurement.

Abstract:The relationship between metabolic rate and body mass follows a power function: B } m b where B is the basal metabolic rate, m is the species mass, and b is the allometric exponent. Older models based on a consideration of surface to volume ratios predict an exponent b 5 2/3, whereas more recent models based on efficient transport and fractal design predict an exponent b 5 3/4. We analyzed 22 published allometric exponents to address the following questions: (1) Is the published allometric exponent correlated with number of species, average mass, or range of mass in the study? (2) What is the mean and confidence interval for published exponents, and do they vary among taxa? (3) Given the published exponent data, what is the likelihood that b 5 2/3 vs. 3/4? We found that published exponents were not correlated with sample size, average mass, or log(difference in mass). For mammals and birds, the allometric exponents were tightly clustered, with means of 0.72 and 0.73, respectively. The reptile data spanned a wider range but had a mean of 0.74. Likelihood analysis suggests that b 5 3/4 is significantly more probable than b 5 2/3. We built a linear regression simulation with experimental error in mass and showed that such measurement error systematically lowers estimates of the allometric exponent. Measurement error probably contributes to the observation that published allometric ex- ponents often fall short of b 5 3/4 as predicted by theoretical models.

Abstract:This study presents a simple Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) to obtain the bimodal characteristics that realize simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature through cascading an ultra-long-period fiber grating and a knob-shaped taper. We obtain the multi-dip feature from the MZI, and the Dips 2 and 5 are selected from 11 interference dips. Experimental results indicated that the wavelength sensitivities of Dips 2 and 5 are − 0.54 nm mε−1 and 0.058 nm °C−1, and − 0.53 nm mε−1 and 0.055 nm °C−1 to strain and temperature, respectively. The depth sensitivities are − 3.3 dB mε− 1, − 0.015 dB °C−1 and −5.8 dB mε−1, and 0.06 dB °C−1 for Dips 2 and 5, respectively. It is concluded that the proposed structure is suitable for simultaneous strain and temperature measurements.

Abstract:In this article, a high sensitivity, low temperature-crosstalk strain sensor based on a microsphere embedded Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) is reported and experimentally demonstrated. The sensor is fabricated by embedding a microsphere inside a tapered hollow-core fiber (HCF) whose ends are enclosed by two standard single-mode fibers (SMFs). The reflections occurring at the SMF/HCF interface and the surfaces of the microsphere, result in a three-beam interference. The cavity length of the formed FPI can be flexibly changed by controlling the diameter of the tapered HCF and the size of the embedded microsphere, and the maximum extinction ratio (ER) of the reflection spectrum is greater than 11 dB. This novel microsphere embedded FPI structure significantly enhances the sensing performance of traditional FPIs for strain measurement, providing a high strain sensitivity of 16.2 pm/mu epsilon with a resolution of 1.3 mu epsilon. Moreover, it is demonstrated that this strain sensor has a very low temperature-strain cross-sensitivity of 0.086 mu epsilon/degrees C, which greatly enhances the potential for applications in the field of precision strain measurement. Abstract:In this paper, a novel high-sensitivity strain sensor based on Mach-Zehnder interference is drawn up and implemented. A single-mode fiber (SMF)-splitter-PCF-combiner-SMF structure is required for the sensor. The beam splitter and beam combiner, for example, have both used MMF and an air spherical cavity, respectively. When the symmetric structure of the air spherical cavity is utilized, the strain sensor has a maximum sensitivity of −8.15 pm/μɛ. The device has the benefits of high sensitivity, small size, and good repeatability, making it a possible application in strain shift measurement.

Abstract:Optical fiber sensors for strain measurement have been playing important roles in structural health monitoring for buildings, tunnels, pipelines, aircrafts, and so on. A highly sensitive strain sensor based on helical structures (HSs) assisted Mach-Zehnder interference in an all-solid heterogeneous multicore fiber (MCF) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Due to the HSs, a maximum strain sensitivity as high as −61.8 pm/με was experimentally achieved. This is the highest sensitivity among interferometer-based strain sensors reported so far, to the best of our knowledge. Moreover, the proposed sensor has the ability to discriminate axial strain and temperature, and offers several advantages such as repeatability of fabrication, robust structure and compact size, which further benefits its practical sensing applications.

Abstract:A optical fiber strain sensor based on in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer is proposed. The in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer is fabricated by simply splicing a section of thin-core fiber between two single-mode fibers (SMFs). When the light couples into the thin-core fiber, part of the light couples into the core of the thin-core fiber and propagates as the core mode. While part of the light couples into the cladding of the thin-core fiber, and many cladding modes are excited. The lights at the core mode and the cladding modes in the thin-core fiber are prone to interference when recoupling into the SMF. By interrogating the wavelength shifts of the interference spectrum, the strain sensor is demonstrated. A strain sensitivity of -1.83 pm/με is achieved within the measurement range from 0 to 2000 με. The experimental results agree well with theoretical analyses. This strain sensor has the advantages of small size, simple fabrication, and high sensitivity.

Abstract:An axial strain and temperature sensor based on a tapered seven-core fiber (SCF) operating at the dispersion turning point (DTP) is proposed. The tapered SCF sensor with DTP was fabricated by the one-step tapering method, and its axial strain characteristics and temperature characteristics were simulated and experimentally investigated. The experimental results show that the tapered SCF sensor operates near DTP with the highest axial strain sensitivity and temperature sensitivity, consistent with the simulation results. The maximum axial strain sensitivity of the tapered SCF sensor is 391.2 pm/με in the range of 0–300 με, and the maximum temperature sensitivity is 6.44 nm/°C in the range of 30-70°C. The sensor is highly sensitive to axial strain and temperature. It is promising for measuring physical quantities such as weak strain and temperature.

Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on S-taper embedded in long-period grating (LPG) for simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature is proposed. The LPG is written using CO2 laser in a single-mode fiber. Then an S-taper is made by putting the LPG in a fusion splicer and applying off-axis pull at the middle point. The spectral characteristics of strain and temperature are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The experimental results show that the maximum strain sensitivity is 53.6 pm/mu epsilon within a strain range of 0 to 373.13 mu epsilon. In additionally, the proposed sensor has a maximum temperature sensitivity of 70 pm/degrees C when the temperature varies from 30 degrees C to 90 degrees C. Abstract:A novel all-fibre highly sensitive strain sensor based on polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fibre (PMPCF) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The sensing structure is formed by splicing a segment of PMPCF between two segments of thin core fibres (TCFs). Since the responses of the resonance dips induced by different order cladding modes interference with core mode are different, the strain sensitivity can be obtained by monitoring the shifts of the resonance dips. The experimental results show that the sensitivity of strain of the MZI is 4.03 pm/µϵ within the strain range from 0 µϵ to 1600 µϵ, respectively. And the temperature characteristics are also researched. This type of sensor has outstanding advantages of convenient manufacture, high-cost efficiency and insensitivity to temperature, so it has potential application prospects in physical, biological and chemical sensing.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally investigate a spiral-polished single-multi-single-mode (SP-SMS) fiber sensor for the simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature. This special spiral shape on a multimode fiber is fabricated by a high-frequency CO2 laser, which excites higher order cladding modes in the interference process and leads to high strain sensitivity. Experimental results show that the strain sensitivity for the proposed structure in the transmission spectrum of two marked interference dips is − 17 pm/με and − 1 pm/με in the range of 0–600 με. Moreover, temperature sensitivities of 10 pm/℃ and 13.3 pm/℃ are obtained in the range of 30–150 ℃. Furthermore, the proposed sensor is inexpensive, is easy to fabricate and has a compact structure.
