Abstract:Roberto Saracco passed away in early December 2023. As a long-time volunteer, Roberto had been a visionary for the IEEE Communications Society, for IEEE and for industry. His visions of future technology later came to pass in reality. For many years his daily blog reported news on innovations, technology, challenges and impact drawing a significant readership. Along these lines he has produced over 20 ebooks on technology evolution and impact that are available through IEEE. His presentations on technology trends were always extremely popular. As a ComSoc leader, he greatly extended the Society's reach to sister societies around the world.

Abstract:W. N. ('Chris') Christiansen was an innovative and influential radio astronomy pioneer. The hallmarks of his long and distinguished career in science and engineering, spanning almost five decades, were his inventiveness and his commitment to, and success with, large-scale projects. These projects were the outcome of his innovative skill as physicist and engineer. Paralleling this was his equal commitment to forging strong international links and friendships, leading to his election as Vice-President of the International Astronomical Union for the years 1964 to 1970, as President of the International Union of Radio Science, URSI, from 1978 to 1981, and subsequently as Honorary Life President in 1984, and as Foreign Secretary of the Australian Academy of Science from 1981 to 1985. Major subsequent developments in radio astronomy and wireless communications on the global scene stand as a legacy to Chris's approach to his work and to the development of those who worked with him.

Abstract:William Frederick Meggers, honored as the Dean of American Spectroscopists by the US National Bureau of Standards (NBS), dedicated over five decades of his career to NBS, which later became the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 1988 under the United States Department of Commerce. Throughout his extensive tenure, spanning over half a century, Meggers made significant contributions to the fields of spectroscopy, atomic physics, and photographic techniques. Retiring officially at the age of 70 in 1958 as Chief of the Spectroscopy Section of the NBS organization, his impact endured. He was notably recognized as the first recipient of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy Gold Medal and remains immortalized through the Meggers Award, an annual accolade bestowed for the most outstanding paper published in the journal Applied Spectroscopy.

I have had the distinct pleasure of collaborating with the esteemed past Editor-in-Chiefs, Dr. Antonio Sanchez-Esguevillas, Dr. Tarek S. El-Bawab, and Dr. Osman Gebizlioglu, over the past seven years. Their dedication and hard work in upholding the quality and integrity of IEEE Communications Magazine have been inspiring. Thanks to the strong leadership and great efforts of the past Editor-in-Chiefs, editors, reviewers, readers, and ComSoc publications staff, IEEE Communications Magazine has reached a great achievement with an impact factor of 11.2 as of 2023.
