Abstract:I share some reminiscences of the late Steven Weinberg. Then I discuss a topic in quantum field theory which he taught me: the role of state wave functionals in deriving the $i\epsilon$ term of the Feynman propagator when using the functional formalism. This is perhaps a curiosity for in-out scattering amplitudes on flat space backgrounds, but it is has much greater significance for the in-in amplitudes of the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism in cosmology. It also touches on the fate, about which Weinberg wondered, of the large logarithms one sometimes finds in quantum corrections from inflationary particle production.

Abstract:As a tribute to Steven Weinberg, we summarize the immense impact that he had on the understanding of the mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking and on the physics of the Higgs boson. In particular, four landmark contributions to this field are highlighted. A first one is his early work with Goldstone and Salam on spontaneously broken continuous symmetries that paved the way to the Higgs mechanism. A second towering breakthrough is his model of leptons which later became the Standard Model of particle physics and for which he was awarded the Nobel prize with Glashow and Salam. A third seminal work is the so-called Weinberg-Linde lower bound on the Higgs boson mass that was derived from the requirement of the stability of the electroweak vacuum. Finally, we will summarize his important contributions in model-building of new physics with extended Higgs sectors and their possible impact in flavor physics and CP-violation. The historical aspects as well as the contemporary way of viewing these four major topics are summarized and their impact on today Higgs physics, and more generally particle physics, is highlighted.

Abstract:In this special issue, dedicated to Martin A. Conway, we have assembled a series of papers by individuals' whose work was affected by Martin's own research. We specifically solicited empirical papers that are somehow connected to the influence that Martin had on the authors' own work or papers that review or summarise a body of their work that was influenced by Martin and his work. Martin's research, predominantly work on autobiographical memory, has had an immense impact on our understanding of human memory and will continue to influence much of memory research in the future.

Abstract:In this article we reflect on the enduring and pervasive influence of Walter Kintsch. His theories and empirical research formed the bedrock of decades of national and international research on text and discourse processing, as well as cognitive science more broadly. His orientation was interdisciplinary, drawing on and contributing to the fields of cognitive psychology, cognitive science, text linguistics, computational modeling, and education sciences. He mentored dozens of students and colleagues who collaborated with him on research over his 60-year career. He was always interested in new ideas and not afraid to cast aside old ideas that were misleading or that had outlived their relevance and utility. This article highlights Walter's legacy contributions woven in with personal stories that exemplify some of the qualities that made Walter a legend in the field.

A Distinguished Scholar, Poetry Critic, and Theorist: in Memory of Marjorie Perloff

Abstract:Professor Marjorie Perloff was a distinguished scholar, poetry critic, and theorist. Her profound insights and unique perspectives on modern and contempo-rary American poetry have earned her high recognition in the international academic community. She was not only an Emeritus Professor at Stanford University and the University of Southern California but also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Philosophical Society. Her research spanned multiple fields, with outstanding achievements particularly in avant-garde poetry and modernist and postmodernist theory. Her works, including The Poetics of Indeterminacy: Rimbaud to Cage, Radical Artifice: Writing Poetry in the Age of Me-dia, Infrathin: An Experiment in Micropoetics, have not only provided new perspec-tives for understanding modern poetry but also advanced the development of poetry theory, establishing leading theories such as the poetics of indeterminacy and micro-poetics. Professor Perloff also served as the long-term president of China-American Association for Poetry and Poetics, actively promoting cultural exchange between China and the United States and fostering deep cooperation in the field of poetry research. Though Professor Perloff passed away, she has left behind us a valuable academic legacy. We will always keep her in our hearts.

Abstract:Purposeful, intentional, supportive, influential, data driven and kind were how Dr Steven Noel Blair (4 July 1939–6 October 2023) lived his life. Previous tributes have already described his numerous accomplishments, awards and publications, but few have spoken about the full spectrum of his personal life, professional career, and service efforts towards physical activity and public health. He not only advocated for healthier living, but, true to his principles (and the data), he lived it daily. In the quiet spaces of a humble work spreadsheet, where he meticulously tracked his time and effort on projects, service commitments and administration, he also tracked his physical activity for decades weaving a personal narrative into the fabric of scientific inquiry. This was more than a numerical record; it was a testament to his dedication. The records start with tracking his daily miles run and strength training, then transitioning to tracking his daily steps...

Abstract:Leo Breiman was a unique character. There will not be another like him. I consider it one of my great fortunes in life to have know and worked with him. Along with John Tukey, Leo had the greatest influence on shaping my approach to statistical problems. I did some of my best work collaborating with Leo, but more importantly, we both had great fun doing it. I look back on those years when we worked closely together with great fondness and regard them as among the happiest and most fruitful of my professional career.
