Empirical Studies of the Arts

Abstract:Empirical Studies of the Arts, Ahead of Print. Paul Locher passed away on 20 August 2024. Paul was an outstanding scientist and a central figure in the field of empirical aesthetics. He made important contributions to numerous areas including the study of symmetry, balance, facial attractiveness, museum behaviour, artwork composition and restoration, and aesthetics of food, but in particular to the study of eye movements in aesthetic appreciation of artworks. Indeed, his research on eye tracking is a touchstone for visual perception in empirical aesthetics. Here, a group of Paul's colleagues remember and celebrate him through a set of recollections that honour how he shaped their research and lives. It is hoped that this will offer a glimpse into the wonderful scholar and human being that Paul was, and why he will be sorely missed.

Abstract:The article consists of two parts. The first part (§§ 1–2) investigates the indiscriminate and absolute remembering and forgetting of everything, hypermnesia and amnesia as the extreme terms that research has used and uses for the different phenomena of memory, both in individuals and in social and political forms. In the face of these shifts it is thus indispensable to re-establish a critique of the paradoxical effects of memory aids and, at the same time, to seek new forms of remembrance that by mixing an experiential dimension and public sphere refocus the attention on the connection between latency, tension and experiential triggers of involuntary memory and on the ability to break through the fictions of collective memory. On this basis, the second part of the article (§§ 3–4) analyses how the experience of political and racial deportation during World War II drastically changed the idea of memorial architecture. More specifically, the analysis deals with a kind of memorial device that must represent and memorialise persons whose bodies have been deliberately cancelled. The aim is to present and analyse the artistic and architectonic efforts to refer to those forgotten bodies, on the one hand, and on the other hand to point out how for these new kind of memorials the body of the visitor is asked to participate, both physically and emotionally, in this somehow paradoxical search for lost bodies, offering oneself as a substitute.

Abstract:Abstract: This article takes up the question of how material objects convey meanings across time by examining James’s responses to several Civil War monuments and memorials in The American Scene. Drawing on Edward S. Casey’s analysis of commemoration as a set of practices of public remembering and Paul Ricoeur’s schema of the cycle of mimesis—prefiguration, configuration, and refiguration—as frames within which to understand both the experience of encounters with objects having historical value and the rendering of that experience in writing, Haviland shows how the meanings of those objects travel across time via transformative individual and collective engagements.

Abstract:Abstract This article provides a genealogy of the architectural figuration of human cognition from the ancient world to Renaissance Europe and, finally, to the American Renaissance where it came to possess a striking cultural and literary potency. The first section pursues the two-fold task of elucidating this archetypal trope for consciousness, both its ancient moorings and its eventual transmission into Europe. The second section shows that three of the most prominent writers of the American Renaissance—Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Nathaniel Hawthorne—engaged this mystically inspired architectonic symbolism, employing far older techno-cultural suppositions about interior space. I thereby offer an account of the intellectual and spiritual heritage upon which Romantic writers in the United States drew to articulate cognitive interiority. These Romantics did more than value creativity in contradistinction to Enlightenment rationalism; they were acknowledging themselves as recipients of the ancient belief in cosmogenesis as self-transformation.

Abstract:I had the marvelous good fortune to be Ken Wilson's graduate student at the Physics Department, Cornell University, from 1972 to 1976. In this article, I present some recollections of how this came about, my interactions with Ken, and Cornell during this period; and acknowledge my debt to Ken, and to John Wilkins and Michael Fisher, who I was privileged to have as my main mentors at Cornell. I end with some thoughts on the challenges of reforming education, a subject that was one of Ken's major preoccupations in the second half of his professional life.

Abstract:How do we negotiate time in the present and hold hope for the future, when the literature of your history, of ancestral traumas housed, unmetabolized, in our bodies, has not as yet been narrated into consciousness? What mediating factors might enable us to negotiate historical and recent loss and, furthermore, facilitate mourning? In this essay, I consider the initial and continued impact on me of first listening to, then re-reading, Adrienne Harris' evocative presentation, and later publication of, "You Must Remember This" (2009). These revived experiences shepherded me into reflecting spaces, particularly regarding the significance of ghosts, or duppies , as they are referenced in Jamaican culture. Are duppies , in the cultural collective, empowered as links and potential mediators between past and present – as keepers of ancestral secrets that, if newly learned, or "rememoried," might facilitate subjective and relational transformation? In this regard, the voices of Toni Morrison and Stewart Hall offer contemplative possibilities.

Abstract:This is the first of three issues devoted to the memory of Joe Lichtenberg, who founded Psychoanalytic Inquiry almost 50 years ago with Mel Bornstein. Joe had a restless mind – or perhaps "open" is a better word. He roamed across schools of thought, drawing inspiration from self psychology, relational theory, ego psychology and classical psychoanalysis while resisting the pressure to fix his allegiances to any one school, although self psychology was always an origin point and place of return. He also roamed across disciplines, drawing from infant-research, autism research, contemporary developments in cognitive psychology as well as literary fiction, where learning comes about through empathic immersion in the experiences of others (fictional others in this case), much as it does in clinical work. He also made his mark in multiple domains, creating new psychoanalytic theories, a new psychoanalytic journal based on an original concept, a new institute that included the psychotherapies, and new ways for peers to learn and study together. We needed three issues to do justice to Joe's many contributions to our field.

Abstract:This introduction provides an overview to this special issue honoring the work and legacy of Jeremy D. Safran. Born of the Jeremy Safran Memorial Conference, held on April 2nd, 2023, this issue features a wide range of contributions from leaders in the field, former students, and early career professionals whose work engages and develops central ideas from Safran's work and reflects on his impact on their own clinical work and scholarship. Themes center around the three domains of Safran's major contributions: pedagogy; psychotherapy integration; and Buddhism, spirituality, and psychoanalysis. We observe among the contributions an experiential reconnecting with the deeply relational commitments of our friend and colleague.
Forgetting the wars: Australian war memorials and amnesia

Abstract:This chapter examines the role of forgetfulness in Australian war memorials. It traces the notion of memory and its relationship with national identity and Anzac as a background to understand what part these play in Australian memorialisation. Forgetfulness is a crucial part of the memory process and its role in inducing social or collective amnesia a necessary (if sometimes unsafe) part of war remembrance. Collective amnesia is the product of processes, both official and individual, that mask aspects of war represented in war memorial design and in the rituals that accompany war commemoration in memorial spaces. Memorials are complex sites and I argue that forgetting and amnesia in memorial designs and use is possibly an essential condition of their being. They are contradictory places where the contest of remembering and forgetting is played out. The Stolpersteine remembr~ce program in Europe illustrates this contest.
