Abstract:Purposeful, intentional, supportive, influential, data driven and kind were how Dr Steven Noel Blair (4 July 1939–6 October 2023) lived his life. Previous tributes have already described his numerous accomplishments, awards and publications, but few have spoken about the full spectrum of his personal life, professional career, and service efforts towards physical activity and public health. He not only advocated for healthier living, but, true to his principles (and the data), he lived it daily. In the quiet spaces of a humble work spreadsheet, where he meticulously tracked his time and effort on projects, service commitments and administration, he also tracked his physical activity for decades weaving a personal narrative into the fabric of scientific inquiry. This was more than a numerical record; it was a testament to his dedication. Abstract:Starting with a recall of the overwhelming feeling, voiced by many thinkers, that the post-WWII era brought about the ‘sense of an ending’ of history as Mitsein (being-in-common), the essay explores the renewed necessity to re-learn to be together in the wake of the worst modern pandemic by appealing to Jean-Luc Nancy’s imagination of a community without community. Nancy’s plea for a singular togetherness will be re-examined in relation to his view that COVID-19 makes us equal and ‘communizes’ us, including in our respective isolations, which we attempt to re-interpret within the critical framework, in memory studies, of what James E. Young called ‘collected memory’. Inflecting Maurice Halbwachs’s original ‘collective memory’ to allow for the many discrete, fragmented memories of disparate individuals united in common moments of remembrance, ‘collected memory’ will be seen as a hyphenated process of ‘re-membering’, a poetic piecing together of disjointed, scattered members and isolated communities gathered in virtual unison through their respective losses. Abstract:Background Despite the prevalence and challenge of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, glimmers of hope arise during lucid moments. Caregivers, often burdened, play a crucial role. The study explored emotional responses to witnessed episodes of unexpected lucidity in deeply forgetful people, aiming to highlight the significance and varying reactions, especially among caregivers of this population. Objective The aim of this study was to elucidate how moments of unexpected lucidity are experienced by those who witness them, and to examine whether caregivers and non-caregivers, as well as different types of caregivers may have different emotional reactions to the episodes. Methods A probability-based sample representative of the United States adult population aged 40 and older with internet access was employed. 5944 respondents completed screening questions regarding whether they knew an individual with dementia and had witnessed unexpected lucidity. Close to 2000 individuals answered questions regarding their emotional reactions to witnessing unexpected lucidity, which we aimed to examine in more detail. Results Both caregivers and non-caregivers showed a tendency towards positive emotions in response to lucid episodes, yet negative emotions were also mentioned. We observed group differences (caregivers versus non-caregivers, different caregiver types) in the emotional responses for some of the examined emotions. Conclusions Caregivers can find inspiration in these fleeting moments. The research aims to guide caregivers and enhance the understanding of the enduring self-identity of deeply forgetful people, promoting compassionate care and recognizing the significance of our shared humanity.

Abstract:Background: Even in severe states of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD), accounts of an unexpected or paradoxical return of awareness and lucidity have been reported in some patients, documented formally, and studied. Objective: A scoping review was undertaken to survey the literature on the topic. Methods: Five databases were searched using pertinent search terms. Results were deduplicated and subsequently screened by title and abstract for relevance. Remaining reports were read and included or excluded using specific inclusion criteria. 30 results consisted of a mix of perspective papers, case reports, qualitative surveys of caregivers, law journal comments, and mechanistic speculation. Results: An equal mix of primary and secondary research was identified. Conclusions: The papers collected in this review provide a valuable methodological outline for researching the topic of lucid episodes in ADRD. The verified legitimacy and simultaneous inexplicability of these events promote philosophical discussion, mechanistic investigations, and sorely needed research in the field of ADRD.

Abstract:This paper seeks to provide both a retrospective and prospective view on the issues surrounding the generation of adverse events within healthcare. It aims to deal with a range of issues around the individual as a means of making mistakes or violating the rules within the organisation. It sets the issue of patient safety into its historical context before highlighting the shift in thinking that accompanied the publication of an Organisation with a Memory (OWAM) by the Department of Health. The paper considers the challenges that surround the shift away from a person‐centric approach to adverse events to one that recognises the importance of latent factors in shaping the conditions in which people can make mistakes and violate. The paper concludes by setting out several propositions for further research and the changes in managerial practice that are needed within healthcare in order to begin to achieve the core aim of OWAM which is to ensure that organisations remember and learn from adverse events.

Abstract:This article investigates cultures of digital memory and forgetting in the European Union. The article first gives some background to key debates in media memory studies, before going on to analyse the shaping of European Commission and European Union initiatives in relation to Google’s activities from the period 2004–present. The focus of inquiry for the discussion of memory is the Google Books project and Europeana, a database of digitized cultural collections drawn from European museums, libraries and archives. Attention is then given to questions of forgetting by exploring the tension between Google’s search and indexing mechanisms and the right to be forgotten. The article ends by reflecting on the scale of the shift in contemporary cultures of memory and forgetting, and considers how far European regulation enables possible interventions in this domain.

Abstract:This is the first of three issues devoted to the memory of Joe Lichtenberg, who founded Psychoanalytic Inquiry almost 50 years ago with Mel Bornstein. Joe had a restless mind – or perhaps "open" is a better word. He roamed across schools of thought, drawing inspiration from self psychology, relational theory, ego psychology and classical psychoanalysis while resisting the pressure to fix his allegiances to any one school, although self psychology was always an origin point and place of return. He also roamed across disciplines, drawing from infant-research, autism research, contemporary developments in cognitive psychology as well as literary fiction, where learning comes about through empathic immersion in the experiences of others (fictional others in this case), much as it does in clinical work. He also made his mark in multiple domains, creating new psychoanalytic theories, a new psychoanalytic journal based on an original concept, a new institute that included the psychotherapies, and new ways for peers to learn and study together. We needed three issues to do justice to Joe's many contributions to our field.

Abstract:This introduction provides an overview to this special issue honoring the work and legacy of Jeremy D. Safran. Born of the Jeremy Safran Memorial Conference, held on April 2nd, 2023, this issue features a wide range of contributions from leaders in the field, former students, and early career professionals whose work engages and develops central ideas from Safran's work and reflects on his impact on their own clinical work and scholarship. Themes center around the three domains of Safran's major contributions: pedagogy; psychotherapy integration; and Buddhism, spirituality, and psychoanalysis. We observe among the contributions an experiential reconnecting with the deeply relational commitments of our friend and colleague.
