Abstract:The forced migration process of German-speaking neurologists and psychiatrists under the Nazis during the 1930s and 40s is often preoccupied solely with "successful" concepts and therapeutic approaches. The case of German-Canadian neurologist Karl Stern (1906-1975) is very instructive, however, since the process of forced migration, for him, proved to be a transitionary process from his former cutting edge work in neuropathology and holist neurology in Germany to clinical psychiatry and the development of the new discipline of geriatric medicine in Canada.

Abstract:The paper is dedicated to the presentation of professor Hugo Steinhaus--co-founder of the Lwów School of Mathematics. It is indicated that had it not been for the scholar, the founding and development of the Lwów School of Mathematics would have been almost impossible. The analyses focus on his undertakings during the Lvov period in the early 1920s and those events that preceded the founding of the school (namely Steinhaus's education at the Göttingen University, various meetings and gatherings, discussions, first fascinations and mathematical dissertations). This paper, however, does not look into the scientific output of Steinhaus, only presents his method of scientific work and highlights the strategy that he chose in order to create the scientific community. An attempt has been also made to justify the effectiveness of the adopted strategy by describing the scientific atmosphere of Lvov and intellectual potential of the students of the school. Steinhaus's activities in the 1930s will be only marginally presented with an impact on particularly interesting cooperation with the alumni of the Lwów School of Mathematics--Marek Kac, Stefan Kaczmarz, Paweł Nikliborec and scholars from other fields of science (as part of the process of the application of mathematics).

Abstract:Keith Brueckner was a theoretical physicist of considerable technical power who came of age as the mysteries of the atomic nucleus were coming into focus. His fundamental contributions to the "many-body problem" had a lasting impact on our understanding of how the macroscopic behavior of matter emerges from the underlying microscopic rules. A passionate and accomplished mountain climber, he listed the American Alpine Club below the National Academy of Sciences on his vitae. During decades of complex interactions between the physics community and the United States government, he helped build structures that allowed him and many others to provide advice on classified matters, but also actively raised funds to support opposition to the war in Vietnam. At the peak of his career, he left the Ivy League to help found and build a new university in a small village filled with Marines and retirees - La Jolla, California.

Abstract:Kurt Goldstein was one of the major proponents of the holistic movement which was opposed to the classical connectionist Wernicke-Lichtheim-Model in aphasiology at the beginning of the 20th century. Influenced by Kant, Husserl and Cassirer, his work goes beyond purely empirical research and approaches traditionally philosophical questions: How can we proceed from empirical data to a theory adequately reflecting reality? How can we understand man as mind and body? What is the relation between language and cognition? Goldstein's concepts of biological knowledge, self-actualization and abstract attitude seek to address these questions. His work thus becomes attractive for philosophers. It was taken up and interpreted by Cassirer, Merleau-Ponty and Gurwitsch.
Karl Gebhardt (1897-1948): a lost man

Abstract:Karl Gebhardt (1897-1948) had a distinguished career as professor of sports medicine before the Second World War. He developed sports for the disabled at a specialised orthopaedic clinic at Hohenlychen and was President of the Red Cross in Germany. During the war, Gebhardt also acted as Heinrich Himmler's personal physician and was responsible for medical experimentation on prisoners in the concentration camps at Auschwitz and Ravensbrück. In his capacity as SS consultant surgeon, he treated Reinhard Heydrich (a high ranking Nazi official, also known as 'the Hangman') after an attempt was made on his life. When Heydrich died, Gebhardt was accused of failing to treat him with sulphonamides. To prove his innocence he carried out a series of experiments on Ravensbrück concentration camp prisoners, breaking their legs and infecting them with various organisms in order to prove the worthlessness of the drugs in treating gas gangrene. He also attempted to transplant the limbs from camp victims to German soldiers wounded on the Russian front. He was tried after the war and executed for these crimes in 1948. This paper explores the paradox of a gifted doctor who was also the perpetrator of inhuman crimes.

We apply this in particular to the case when X is the projectivization of the so-called canonical extension of the tangent bundle of a projective manifold M with Y being the projectivization of itself.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is point out connections between scattering theory, double operator integrals, Kreins spectral shift function, integration theory, bimeasures, Feynman path integrals, harmonic and functional analysis and many other applications to quantum physics made since the last 50 years or so. The starting point is Kluvaneks Integration Structures which he hoped to apply to quantum physics and is now bearing fruit from the contributions of many authors, especially former Soviet mathematical physicists in the intervening years. Soon, a practical quantum field theory in four space-time dimensions satisfying the Wightman axioms may be proved to exist. This is the aim of one of the Clay Prizes. At the moment, only toy models exist in fewer than four space-time dimensions.

Abstract:The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries have long been considered as a formative period for modern Irish political traditions such as nationalism, republicanism and unionism. For Europe it was the time of a turnover in science moving from observation to experiment and from speculation to fact. Richard Kirwan was a well known natural philosopher in Europe and a respected man of science in his time. Throughout all the wars, he was connected with his colleagues in a network reaching across Europe and even to America. Using a few examples, this article is intended to provide an insight how the network worked in a time that was marked by political conflicts and revolutionary events in both science and social life.

Abstract:Peter J. Huber was born on March 25, 1934, in Wohlen, a small town in the Swiss countryside. He obtained a diploma in mathematics in 1958 and a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1961, both from ETH Zurich. His thesis was in pure mathematics, but he then decided to go into statistics. He spent 1961--1963 as a postdoc at the statistics department in Berkeley where he wrote his first and most famous paper on robust statistics, ``Robust Estimation of a Location Parameter.'' After a position as a visiting professor at Cornell University, he became a full professor at ETH Zurich. He worked at ETH until 1978, interspersed by visiting positions at Cornell, Yale, Princeton and Harvard. After leaving ETH, he held professor positions at Harvard University 1978--1988, at MIT 1988--1992, and finally at the University of Bayreuth from 1992 until his retirement in 1999. He now lives in Klosters, a village in the Grisons in the Swiss Alps. Peter Huber has published four books and over 70 papers on statistics and data analysis. In addition, he has written more than a dozen papers and two books on Babylonian mathematics, astronomy and history. In 1972, he delivered the Wald lectures. He is a fellow of the IMS, of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1988 he received a Humboldt Award and in 1994 an honorary doctorate from the University of Neuchâtel. In addition to his fundamental results in robust statistics, Peter Huber made important contributions to computational statistics, strategies in data analysis, and applications of statistics in fields such as crystallography, EEGs, and human growth curves.

Abstract:I first met Rudolf Kalman in Vienna, Austria, in the spring of 1972. I had recently finished my Ph.D. at the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, and I was invited to give a talk on my recent results in stochastic control theory at a small workshop that Kalman also attended. Apparently, Kalman was favorably impressed with my talk because he took me out for dinner the same evening and immediately invited me to come to Florida for the coming academic year. Kalman had just moved from Stanford to the University of Florida, and this is how I became his first postdoctoral associate at his new Center for Mathematical Systems Theory in the fall of 1972.
Generalized complex Stein manifold

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a generalized complex (GC) Stein manifold and provide complete characterizations in three fundamental aspects. First, we extend Cartan's Theorem A and B within the framework of GC geometry. Next, we define $L$-plurisubharmonic functions and develop an associated $L^2$ theory. This leads to a characterization of GC Stein manifolds using $L$-plurisubharmonic exhaustion functions. Finally, we establish the existence of a proper GH embedding from any GC Stein manifold into $\mathbb{R}^{2n-2k} \times \mathbb{C}^{2k+1}$, where $2n$ and $k$ denote the dimension and type of the GC Stein manifold, respectively. This provides a characterization of GC Stein manifolds via GH embeddings. Several examples of GC Stein manifolds are given.

Abstract:We provide an explanation of the main ideas underlying Götze's main result in using Stein's method. We also provide detailed derivations of various intermediate estimates. Curiously, we are led to a different dimensional dependence of the constant than that given Götze's paper. We would like to dedicate this to Charles Stein on the occasion of his 90th birthday.
