Abstract:Carlo Cercignani was known all over the world for his works on the Boltzmann equation and on kinetic theory. There was however another aspect of his scientific life, which is not much known. Namely, his interest for the foundations of physics, in particular for the possibility of understanding quantum mechanics through classical mechanics, which he shared with several people in Milan. A review of such researches is given here, together with some personal recollections of him.

Abstract:Ugo Fano has been a leader in theoretical Physics in the XX century giving key contributions to our understanding of quantum phenomena. He passed away on 13 February 2001 after 67 years of research activity. I will focus on his prediction of the quantum interference effects to understand the high-energy photoabsorption cross section giving the Fano lineshapes. The Fano results led to the theoretical understanding of shape resonances (known also as Feshbach resonances) that should be better called Fano resonances. Finally I will show that today this Fano quantum interference effect is behind several new physical phenomena in different fields.

A Memory of Majorana Fermions through Quantum Quench

Abstract: We study the sudden quench of a one-dimensional p-wave superconductor through its topological signature in the entanglement spectrum. The long-time evolution of the system and its topological characterization depend on a pseudomagnetic field ${\bs R}_{\mbox{\text eff}}(k)$, which connects both the initial and the final Hamiltonians, hence exhibiting a memory effect. In particular, we explore the robustness of the Majorana zero-mode associated with the entanglement cut in the topologically nontrivial phase and identify the parameter space in which the mode can survive in the infinite-time limit.

Abstract:The broad debate on foundational issues in quantum mechanics, which took place at the famous 1957 Chapel Hill conference on \textit{The Role of Gravitation in Physics}, is here critically analyzed with an emphasis on Richard Feynman's contributions. One of the most debated questions at Chapel Hill was whether the gravitational field had to be quantized and its possible role in wave function collapse. Feynman's arguments in favor of the quantization of the gravitational field, based essentially on a series of gedanken experiments, are here discussed. Then the related problem of the wave function collapse, for which Feynman hints to decoherence as a possible solution, is discussed. Finally, another topic is analyzed, concerning the role of the observer in a closed Universe. In this respect, Feynman's many-worlds characterization of Everett's approach at Chapel Hill is discussed, together with later contributions of his, including a kind of Schrödinger's cat paradox, which are scattered throughout the 1962-63 Lectures on Gravitation. Philosophical implications of Feynman's ideas in relation to foundational issues are also discussed.

Enrico Fermi: a little-known conference dating back to the early years of solid-state physics

Abstract:In April 1925, Enrico Fermi was only 23 years old and he had graduated less than three years earlier. Despite his age, Fermi was invited at the University of Rome by Federigo Enriques to give several lectures on the recent advances in physics at the Italian Mathematics Seminar. Enriques was also the editor of "Periodico di Matematiche", an important Italian journal concerned primarily with secondary school math teachers. Some of the articles published by "Periodico di Matematiche" correspond to the lectures which Fermi gave during seminars and meetings of Italian mathematicians. Here we propose an English translation for one of these articles, entitled "Sopra la teoria cinetica dei corpi solidi" and discussing the kinetic theory of solids. We believe that this Fermi's work offers a twofold interesting perspective: on one side, it allows us to explore the problems related to the structure of matter of emerging at the time as seen by the eyes of a bright, young physicist. On the other hand, it shows us the undoubtedly high scientific level of the articles read in Italy by the secondary school math teachers in the Twenties.

Abstract:In memory of the famous physicist Bruno Pontecorvo, whereof is just occurred the centenary anniversary of the birth and the twentieth anniversary of the death, this paper traces the scientific and human adventure of the italian scientist, from the pioneering studies of nuclear physics together with his master Enrico Fermi, to the excellent results in particle physics, in particular his research and insights about the neutrino. As much attention is paid to the human experience, his relationship with politics and the choice to embrace the Soviet socialist model. A short portrait to commemorate a scientist symbol of the twentieth century.

Abstract:I share some reminiscences of the late Steven Weinberg. Then I discuss a topic in quantum field theory which he taught me: the role of state wave functionals in deriving the $i\epsilon$ term of the Feynman propagator when using the functional formalism. This is perhaps a curiosity for in-out scattering amplitudes on flat space backgrounds, but it is has much greater significance for the in-in amplitudes of the Schwinger-Keldysh formalism in cosmology. It also touches on the fate, about which Weinberg wondered, of the large logarithms one sometimes finds in quantum corrections from inflationary particle production.

Abstract:This contribution will be published in '50 years of the renormalization group', dedicated to the memory of Michael E. Fisher, edited by Amnon Aharony, Ora Entin-Wohlman, David Huse, and Leo Radzihovsky, World Scientific. These personal remembrances come in three parts. The first contains a brief personal perspective on Michael E. Fisher's contributions to science. The second tells how I came to work with Michael and describes events while I was under his supervision during my graduate years at Cornell University. The third part summarizes recent work, done in collaboration with Suraj Shankar, on thermalized buckling of isotopically compressed thin (perhaps atomically thin) sheets of materials such as graphene or MoS$_2$. These investigations were inspired by Michael's beautiful work on the effect of constraints at critical points, with fluctuations at all length scales, which leads to 'Fisher renormalization' of critical exponents. [1] Thin fluctuating sheets embedded in three dimensions, when they are tensionless as in a cantilever or 'diving board' geometry, are automatically at a critical point everywhere in a low temperature flat phase. However, when we consider thin sheets supported on multiple sides in various ways, Fisher's ideas lead to the inequivalence of isotensional and isometric thermodynamic ensembles, which triggers dramatic differences in some of the critical exponents associated with the two types of boundary conditions. [2] Readers not interested in my experiences while a student at Cornell University may only want to read parts I and III. There are also some concluding remarks.

Abstract:We scan Paul K. Feyerabend's work in philosophy of physics and of science more generally for insights that could be useful for the contemporary debate on the foundations of quantum mechanics. We take as our starting point what Feyerabend has actually written about quantum mechanics, but we extend our analysis to his general views on realism, objectivity, pluralism, and the relation between physics and philosophy, finding that these more general views could in fact offer many interesting insights for physicists and philosophers working on quantum foundations.

Abstract:Joseph Polchinski (1954-2018), one of the the leading theoretical physicists of the past 50 years, was an exceptionally broad and deep thinker. He made fundamental contributions to quantum field theory, advancing the role of the renormalization group, and to cosmology, addressing the cosmological constant problem. Polchinski's work on D-branes revolutionized string theory and led to the discovery of a nonperturbative quantum theory of gravity. His recent, incisive reformulation of the black hole information paradox presents us with a profound challenge. Joe was deeply devoted to his family, a beloved colleague and advisor, an excellent writer, and an accomplished athlete.
