Abstract:Considering homogeneous four-dimensional space-time geometries within real projective geometry provides a mathematically well-defined framework to discuss their deformations and limits without the appearance of coordinate singularities. On Lie algebra level the related conjugacy limits act isomorphically to concatenations of contractions. We axiomatically introduce projective quantum fields on homogeneous space-time geometries, based on correspondingly generalized unitary transformation behavior and projectivization of the field operators. Projective correlators and their expectation values remain well-defined in all geometry limits, which includes their ultraviolet and infrared limits. They can degenerate with support on space-time boundaries and other lower-dimensional space-time subspaces. We explore fermionic and bosonic superselection sectors as well as the irreducibility of projective quantum fields. Dirac fermions appear, which obey spin-statistics as composite quantum fields. The framework systematically formalizes and generalizes the ambient space techniques regularly employed in conformal field theory.

Abstract:We explore finite-field frameworks for quantum theory and quantum computation. The simplest theory, defined over unrestricted finite fields, is unnaturally strong. A second framework employs only finite fields with no solution to x^2+1=0, and thus permits an elegant complex representation of the extended field by adjoining i=\sqrt{-1}. Quantum theories over these fields recover much of the structure of conventional quantum theory except for the condition that vanishing inner products arise only from null states; unnaturally strong computational power may still occur. Finally, we are led to consider one more framework, with further restrictions on the finite fields, that recovers a local transitive order and a locally-consistent notion of inner product with a new notion of cardinal probability. In this framework, conventional quantum mechanics and quantum computation emerge locally (though not globally) as the size of the underlying field increases. Interestingly, the framework allows one to choose separate finite fields for system description and for measurement: the size of the first field quantifies the resources needed to describe the system and the size of the second quantifies the resources used by the observer. This resource-based perspective potentially provides insights into quantitative measures for actual computational power, the complexity of quantum system definition and evolution, and the independent question of the cost of the measurement process.

Functional formulation of quantum theory of a scalar field in a metric with Lorentzian and Euclidean signatures

Abstract:We study the Schrödinger equation in quantum field theory (QFT) in its functional formulation. In this approach quantum correlation functions can be expressed as classical expectation values over (complex) stochastic processes. We obtain a stochastic representation of the Schrödinger time evolution on Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) states by means of the Wiener integral. We discuss QFT in a flat expanding metric and in de Sitter space-time. We calculate the evolution kernel in an expanding flat metric in the real time formulation. We discuss a field interaction in pseudoRiemannian and Riemannian metrics showing that an inversion of the signature leads to some substantial simplifications of the singularity problems in QFT.

Abstract:We propose a general construction of quantum states for linear canonical quantum fields on a manifold, which encompasses and generalizes the ``standard'' procedures existing in textbooks. Our method provides pure and mixed states on the same footing. A large class of examples finds a simple and unified treatment in our approach. Applications discussed here include thermodynamical equilibrium states for Minkowski fields and quantum field theory in the Rindler's and in the open de Sitter universes. Our approach puts the above examples into perspective and unravels new possibilities for quantization. We call our generalization ``extended canonical quantization'' as it is suited to attack cases not directly covered by the standard canonical approach.

Application of Tomita-Takesaki theory in algebraic euclidean field theories

Abstract:The construction of the known interacting quantum field theory models is mostly based on euclidean techniques. The expectation values of interesting quantities are usually given in terms of euclidean correlation functions from which one should be able to extract information about the behavior of the correlation functions of the Minkowskian counterpart. We think that the C*-algebraic approach to euclidean field theory gives an appropriate setup in order to study structural aspects model independently. A previous paper deals with a construction scheme which relates to each euclidean field theory a Poincaré covariant quantum field theory model in the sense of R. Haag and D. Kastler. Within the framework of R. Haag and D. Kastler, the physical concept of PCT symmetry and spin and statistics is related to the Tomita-Takesaki theory of von Neumann algebras and this important aspects has been studied by several authors. We express the PCT symmetry in terms of euclidean reflexions and we explicitly identify the corresponding modular operator and the modular conjugation of the related Tomita-Takesaki theory. Locality, wedge duality, and a geometric action of the modular group of the von Neumann algebra of observables, localized within a wedge region in Minkowski space, are direct consequences.

Matter relative to quantum hypersurfaces

Abstract:We explore the canonical description of a scalar field as a parameterized field theory on an extended phase space that includes additional embedding fields that characterize spacetime hypersurfaces $\mathsf{X}$ relative to which the scalar field is described. This theory is quantized via the Dirac prescription and physical states of the theory are used to define conditional wave functionals $|\psi_\phi[\mathsf{X}]\rangle$ interpreted as the state of the field relative to the hypersurface $\mathsf{X}$, thereby extending the Page-Wootters formalism to quantum field theory. It is shown that this conditional wave functional satisfies the Tomonaga-Schwinger equation, thus demonstrating the formal equivalence between this extended Page-Wootters formalism and standard quantum field theory. We also construct relational Dirac observables and define a quantum deparameterization of the physical Hilbert space leading to a relational Heisenberg picture, which are both shown to be unitarily equivalent to the Page-Wootters formalism. Moreover, by treating hypersurfaces as quantum reference frames, we extend recently developed quantum frame transformations to changes between classical and nonclassical hypersurfaces. This allows us to exhibit the transformation properties of a quantum field under a larger class of transformations, which leads to a frame-dependent particle creation effect.

Abstract:A mathematically well-defined, manifestly covariant theory of classical and quantum field is given, based on Euclidean Poisson algebras and a generalization of the Ehrenfest equation, which implies the stationary action principle. The theory opens a constructive spectral approach to finding physical states both in relativistic quantum field theories and for flexible phenomenological few-particle approximations. In particular, we obtain a Lorentz-covariant phenomenological multiparticle quantum dynamics for electromagnetic and gravitational interaction which provides a representation of the Poincare group without negative energy states. The dynamics reduces in the nonrelativistic limit to the traditional Hamiltonian multiparticle description with standard Newton and Coulomb forces. The key that allows us to overcome the traditional problems in canonical quantization is the fact that we use the algebra of linear operators on a space of wave functions slightly bigger than traditional Fock spaces.

Abstract:In these lecture notes, I review how to use large N techniques to solve quantum field theories in various dimensions. In particular, the case of N-dimensional quantum mechanics, non-relativistic cold and dense neutron matter, and scalar field theory in four dimensions are covered. A recurring theme is that large N solutions are fully non-perturbative, and can be used to reliably access quantum field theory for parameter regions where weak-coupling expansions simply fail.

Abstract:We develop a general framework for quantum field theory on noncommutative spaces, i.e., spaces with quantum group symmetry. We use the path integral approach to obtain expressions for $n$-point functions. Perturbation theory leads us to generalised Feynman diagrams which are braided, i.e., they have non-trivial over- and under-crossings. We demonstrate the power of our approach by applying it to $\phi^4$-theory on the quantum 2-sphere. We find that the basic divergent diagram of the theory is regularised.

Abstract:We construct a mathematical version of quantum field theory. It assigns to a multidimensional variational principle an associative algebra which is a quantization of the Poisson algebra of classical field theory observables. For free scalar field and for the Dirichlet principle, this construction yields free algebraic quantum field theory and free field representation in two dimensional conformal field theory.
On topology changes in quantum field theory and quantum gravity

Abstract:Two singularity theorems can be proven if one attempts to let a Lorentzian cobordism interpolate between two topologically distinct manifolds. On the other hand, Cartier and DeWitt-Morette have given a rigorous definition for quantum field theories (qfts) by means of path integrals. This article uses their results to study whether qfts can be made compatible with topology changes. We show that path integrals over metrics need a finite norm for the latter and for degenerate metrics, this problem can sometimes be resolved with tetrads. We prove that already in the neighborhood of some cuspidal singularities, difficulties can arise to define certain qfts. On the other hand, we show that simple qfts can be defined around conical singularities that result from a topology change in a simple setup. We argue that the ground state of many theories of quantum gravity will imply a small cosmological constant and, during the expansion of the universe, will cause frequent topology changes. Unfortunately, it is difficult to describe the transition amplitudes consistently due to the aforementioned problems. We argue that one needs to describe qfts by stochastic differential equations, and in the case of gravity, by Regge calculus in order to resolve this problem.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new framework for quantum field theory in terms of consistency conditions. The consistency conditions that we consider are "associativity" or "factorization" conditions on the operator product expansion (OPE) of the theory, and are proposed to be the defining property of any quantum field theory. Our framework is presented in the Euclidean setting, and is applicable in principle to any quantum field theory, including non-conformal ones. In our framework, we obtain a characterization of perturbations of a given quantum field theory in terms of a certain cohomology ring of Hochschild-type. We illustrate our framework by the free field, but our constructions are general and apply also to interacting quantum field theories. For such theories, we propose a new scheme to construct the OPE which is based on the use of non-linear quantized field equations.

Abstract:We continue studies on quantum field theories on noncommutative geometric spaces, focusing on classes of noncommutative geometries which imply ultraviolet and infrared modifications in the form of nonzero minimal uncertainties in positions and momenta. The case of the ultraviolet modified uncertainty relation which has appeared from string theory and quantum gravity is covered. The example of euclidean $\phi^4$-theory is studied in detail and in this example we can now show ultraviolet and infrared regularisation of all graphs.

Abstract:International Journal of Geometric Methods in Modern Physics, Ahead of Print. We review some recent results on the mathematical foundations of a quantum theory over a scalar field that is a quadratic extension of the non-Archimedean field of [math]-adic numbers. In our approach, we are inspired by the idea — first postulated in [I. V. Volovich, [math]-adic string, Class. Quantum Grav. 4 (1987) L83–L87] — that space, below a suitably small scale, does not behave as a continuum and, accordingly, should be modeled as a totally disconnected metrizable topological space, ruled by a metric satisfying the strong triangle inequality. The first step of our construction is a suitable definition of a [math]-adic Hilbert space. Next, after introducing all necessary mathematical tools — in particular, various classes of linear operators in a [math]-adic Hilbert space — we consider an algebraic definition of physical states in [math]-adic quantum mechanics. The corresponding observables, whose definition completes the statistical interpretation of the theory, are introduced as SOVMs, a [math]-adic counterpart of the POVMs associated with a standard quantum system over the complex numbers. Interestingly, it turns out that the typical convex geometry of the space of states of a standard quantum system is replaced, in the [math]-adic setting, with an affine geometry; therefore, a symmetry transformation of a [math]-adic quantum system may be defined as a map preserving this affine geometry. We argue that, as a consequence, the group of all symmetry transformations of a [math]-adic quantum system has a richer structure with respect to the case of standard quantum mechanics over the complex numbers.

Abstract:The goal of the present note is to understand whether it is possible to define interacting quantum field theory in global anti de Sitter space-time with Lorentzian signature, in its covering space-time (whose time coordinate is not periodic) and in its Poincare patch. We show that in global anti de Sitter space-time there are certain problems to define quantum field theory properly. This is due to an additional UV singularity of the Feynman propagator which is sitting on the light-cone emanating from the antipodal point of the source. There is no such singularity in flat space-time. At the same time quantum field theory in Poincare region of the AdS space-time can be well defined and is related to the one in Euclidean AdS via the analytical continuation. In principle one can also define and analytically continue quantum field theory in the covering anti de Sitter space-time. However, to do that one has to use an unusual $i\epsilon$-prescription in the Feynman propagator, which cannot be used in loop calculations in non-stationary situations.

Abstract:Non-Abelian Gauss law is interpreted in terms of area bits described in a local frame which fit together into closed surfaces and the Non-Abelian Stokes law in terms of length bits described in a local frame which fit together into closed loops. A new equation relating the area variables and the phase space variables (or equivalently, angular momentum variables of the lattice Yang-Mills theory and phase space variables of the continuum theory) is obtained. Canonical quantization applied to these variables implies area quantization. A complete orthonormal basis of states satisfying the Gauss constraint is obtained.It has the interpretation of quantized area bits with undefined orientations and edges but fitting together into closed surfaces.

Abstract:In fundamentally discrete approaches to quantum gravity such as loop quantum gravity, spin-foam models, group field theories or Regge calculus observables are functions on discrete geometries. We present a bra-ket formalism of function spaces and discrete calculus on abstract simplicial complexes equipped with geometry and apply it to the mentioned theories of quantum gravity. In particular we focus on the quantum geometric Laplacian and discuss as an example the expectation value of the heat kernel trace from which the spectral dimension follows.

Abstract:The present work is a review of a series of papers, published in the last ten years, comprising an attempt to find a suitable avenue from geometry to quantum. It shows clearly that, any non-symmetric geometry admits some built-in quantum features. These features disappear completely once the geometry becomes symmetric (torsion-less). It is shown that, torsion of space-time plays an important role in both geometry and physics. It interacts with the spin of the moving particle and with its charge. The first interaction, {\bf{Spin-Torsion Interaction}}, has been used to overcome the discrepancy in the results of the COW-experiment. The second interaction, {\bf{Charge-Torsion Interaction}}, is similar to the Aharonov-Bohm effect. As a byproduct, a new version of Absolute Parallelism (AP) geometry, the Parameterized Absolute Parallelism (PAP) geometry, has been established and developed. This version can be used to construct field theories that admit some quantum features. Riemannian geometry and conventional AP-geometry are special cases of PAP-geometry.
