A brilliant and reflective researcher, kind and disciplined mentor, public-spirited scientist, and wonderful colleague, Jim Greeno endowed our profession with wisdom, social value, and selfless citizenship. He began his training in laboratory behaviorism and philosophy of science, helped shape cognitive psychology, transformed vague ideas into testable theory with powerful computational tools, and contributed greatly to our understanding of the situational determinants of thought, learning, and action. He held positions at Indiana University, University of Michigan, University of Pittsburgh, University of California-Berkeley, and Stanford and cofounded the Institute for Research on Learning with John Seely Brown and David Kearns. Abstract:A 14-year boy is given a microscope by his parents. It is not a toy – but a real microscope. He deploys it to rediscover the biology he had known before, but now in a magnified world. With extraordinary intellectual gifts he then, and manifestly later becomes absorbed by the idea that all this, however mysterious at first glance, might be subject to rational understanding, with painstaking study. Thus, was the genesis of one of the greatest cell biologists of the 20 th century, Joseph Grafton Gall, who died 12 September 2024, at 96. He had been professionally active up until only a few years ago. There was no one like him in the modern era of cell biology and there will not be another figure like him anytime soon.

Since two rather comprehensive autobiographical accounts and two long biographical interviews already exist, the present work focusses on Davis's scientific achievements, including work on computably enumerable sets, universal Turing machines, the hyperarithmetical hierarchy, neural networks, Hilbert's Tenth Problem, and automated reasoning.

Abstract:Leonid Keldysh -- one of the most influential theoretical physicists of the 20th century -- passed away in November 2016. Keldysh is best known for the diagrammatic formulation of real-time (nonequilibrium) Green functions theory and for the theory of strong field ionization of atoms. Both theories profoundly changed large areas of theoretical physics and stimulated important experiments. Both these discoveries emerged almost simultaneously -- like Einstein, also Keldysh had his \textit{annus mirabilis} -- the year 1964. But the list of his theoretical developments is much broader and is briefly reviewed here.

Abstract:On Saturday 26 September, around 4am, John Barrow died aged 67, with his wife Elizabeth and son Roger at his side. From a scientific perspective, it is hard to conceive a more premature end. During lockdown alone, whilst undergoing chemotherapy and in the full knowledge that his cancer was inoperable, John managed to co-author 11 scientific papers and write a new book ("One Plus One"). Even by his own standards of productivity, this is staggeringly impressive, an achievement he was openly proud of. From a broader perspective, with a wife, 3 children and 5 young grandchildren, many strong friendships, and so much more to offer the world, he departed far too soon.

Abstract:The Goldberg-Sachs theorem is an exact result on shear-free null geodesics in a vacuum spacetime. It is compared and contrasted with an exact result for pressure-free matter: shear-free flows cannot both expand and rotate. In both cases, the shear-free condition restricts the way distant matter can influence the local gravitational field. This leads to intriguing discontinuities in the relation of the General Relativity solutions to Newtonian solutions in the timelike case, and of the full theory to the linearised theory in the null case. It is a pleasure to dedicate this paper to Josh Goldberg.
