Abstract:This study aims to understand the quantum superposition and observer effect in the Copenhagen interpretation and to explore the interaction between human consciousness and artificial intelligence (AI) involved in the creation of quantum memories by applying the many worlds interpretation of quantum physics to Refik Anadol’s Quantum Memories. According to the Copenhagen interpretation, the act of observation itself determines the state of an object. Furthermore, from the perspective of the many worlds interpretation of quantum physics, when we observe and interact with something, we create a new being or universe. Anadol said that his project was inspired by the many worlds interpretation of quantum physics. The intersection between human consciousness, AI, and the aesthetics of probability that can be experienced through his work presents a new form of memory from a quantum physics perspective.

Abstract:As the preface to the special issue for the conference ``Quantum Information and Probability: from Foundations to Engineering'' (QIP23), I wrote these notes with recollection about Växjö conferences. These conferences covered 25 years of my life (2000-24) and played the crucial role in evolution of my own views on the basic problems of quantum foundations. I hope to continue this conference series as long as possible. Up to my understanding, this is the longest conference series on quantum foundation in the history of quantum physics. These notes contain my recollections of conversations with the world's leading experts on quantum foundations. I think that such notes may have the historical value. My own views on quantum foundations are specific and they evolved essentially during 25 years. Finally, I discovered the practically forgotten pathway in physical foundations developed by von Helmholtz, Hertz, Boltzmann, and Schrödinger and known as the Bild conception. A scientific theory is a combination of two models, observational and causal. Coupling between these models can be tricky. A causal model can operate with hidden quantities which can't be identified with observables. From this viewpoint, Bell's coupling of subquantum and quantum models is very special and the violation of the Bell inequalities doesn't close (local) ways beyond quantum mechanics.

Empirical Studies of the Arts

Abstract:Empirical Studies of the Arts, Ahead of Print. Paul Locher passed away on 20 August 2024. Paul was an outstanding scientist and a central figure in the field of empirical aesthetics. He made important contributions to numerous areas including the study of symmetry, balance, facial attractiveness, museum behaviour, artwork composition and restoration, and aesthetics of food, but in particular to the study of eye movements in aesthetic appreciation of artworks. Indeed, his research on eye tracking is a touchstone for visual perception in empirical aesthetics. Here, a group of Paul's colleagues remember and celebrate him through a set of recollections that honour how he shaped their research and lives. It is hoped that this will offer a glimpse into the wonderful scholar and human being that Paul was, and why he will be sorely missed.

Abstract:K. Alex Müller started his scientific career in 1958 when he was about thirty-one years old. After his wife passed away and being in his nineties, his interest in physics gradually faded. In those years shortly before he passed away, on January 9, 2023, he was no longer interested in superconductivity or ferroelectricity, he had become essentially devoted to philosophy and psychology. It is of note that altogether his research in physics comprised sixty years of activity. Almost in the middle of this period, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in ceramic copper oxides in 1987. This discovery made him truly famous. While most researchers are familiar with his Nobel Prize work, many are not aware of the fact that K. Alex Müller was already an acclaimed scientist before that and highly respected in the field of perovskite oxides, ferroelectricity, structural phase transitions, Jahn-Teller physics, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and, especially so in the properties of SrTiO3.

Abstract:Michel Barat passed away in November 2018 at the age of 80 after a rich career in atomic and molecular collisions. He had participated actively in formalizing the electron promotion model, contribuing to low energy reactive collisions at the frontier of chemistry. He investigated electron capture mechanisms by highly charged ions (HCI), switched to collision induced cluster dissociation and finally to UV laser induced fragmentation mechanisms of biological molecules. During this highly active time he created a laboratory, organized ICPEAC and participated actively in the administration of research. This paper covers the 10 years when he mentored my scientific activity in the blossoming field of electron capture by HCI. In spite of an impressive number of open channels, Michel found a way to capture the important parameters and to simplify the description of several electron capture processes; orientation propensity, electron promotion, true double electron capture, transfer ionisation, transfer excitation, formation of Rydberg states, and electron capture by metastable states. Each time Michel established fruitful collaborations with other groups.

Alexander Raskatov, a composer and close friend of Ekimovskiy, shares his memories of the difficult period of the 1990s, joint trips to the House of Composers' Creativity "Ruza," and worldly situations. Through the prism of episodes from his personal life—"human moments, touching, and complex," the image of Victor Alekseevich—the main things in his personality and creativity—are highlighted; the panorama of uneasy but friendly relations between the ACM members is revealed.

Abstract:A university student is called in Hungarian 'hallgató', i.e., listener, a person who listens. Attila Császár has been professor at ELTE, Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, where he has taught theoretical chemistry, spectroscopy, and special courses about quantum nuclear motion theory. In his courses, we, at that time students, did not listen but were actively involved in discussions about the quantum mechanics of molecular rotations and vibrations. A question was never wrong, our imagination was never limited, and this also meant that we sometimes had to continue in the library after the class to prepare for the next week.

Abstract:Two themes are coming to the forefront in this decade: Cognitive impairment of an aging population and the quantum leap in developing artificial intelligence (AI). Both can be described as growing exponentially and presenting serious challenges. Although many questions have been addressed about the dangers of AI, we want to go beyond the fearful aspects of this topic and focus on the possible contribution of AI to solve the problem of chronic disorders of the elderly leading to cognitive impairment, like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Lewy body dementia. Our second goal is to look at the ways in which modern neuroscience can influence the future design of computers and the development of AI. We wish to honor the memory of Dr. John von Neumann, who came up with many breakthrough details of the first electronic computer. Remarkably, Dr. von Neumann dedicated his last book to the comparison of the human brain and the computer as it stood in those years of the mid-1950s. We will point out how his ideas are more relevant than ever in the age of supercomputers, AI and brain implants.

Abstract:Leonid Keldysh -- one of the most influential theoretical physicists of the 20th century -- passed away in November 2016. Keldysh is best known for the diagrammatic formulation of real-time (nonequilibrium) Green functions theory and for the theory of strong field ionization of atoms. Both theories profoundly changed large areas of theoretical physics and stimulated important experiments. Both these discoveries emerged almost simultaneously -- like Einstein, also Keldysh had his \textit{annus mirabilis} -- the year 1964. But the list of his theoretical developments is much broader and is briefly reviewed here.
