Abstract:K. Alex Müller started his scientific career in 1958 when he was about thirty-one years old. After his wife passed away and being in his nineties, his interest in physics gradually faded. In those years shortly before he passed away, on January 9, 2023, he was no longer interested in superconductivity or ferroelectricity, he had become essentially devoted to philosophy and psychology. It is of note that altogether his research in physics comprised sixty years of activity. Almost in the middle of this period, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in ceramic copper oxides in 1987. This discovery made him truly famous. While most researchers are familiar with his Nobel Prize work, many are not aware of the fact that K. Alex Müller was already an acclaimed scientist before that and highly respected in the field of perovskite oxides, ferroelectricity, structural phase transitions, Jahn-Teller physics, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and, especially so in the properties of SrTiO3.

Abstract:Alex Müller and Georg Bednorz are widely recognized for their trailblazing discovery of high-temperature superconductivity and their groundbreaking research on SrTiO3. In comparison, their substantial contributions to inventing the high-Tc superconducting field-effect transistor remain relatively unknown. Nevertheless, their efforts were crucial in developing the electric field effect into a valuable tool for studying a broad spectrum of complex materials. This article provides a brief overview of these developments and of the current status in this field, with a particular focus on Alex Müller's visionary role in advancing the field following the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity.

Abstract:In my short essay in honor of Karl-Alex Mueller, I would like to deal with some aspects that have been on my mind since the beginning of my own research. Some of the facts and questions mentioned here have been known or clarified for a long time, others not. For example, I think that the fact that superconductivity occurs almost spontaneously in many cuprates close to the optimum doping level has been insufficiently (or not at all) investigated. Much research has been done in the regions outside the optimal doping, be it underdoped or overdoped. I would like to deviate from the "mainstream" for a moment and ask whether these regions are really so relevant for the occurrence of superconductivity, or whether they simply serve to interfere with it - a thought which I am sure has been expressed by others and which would certainly lead (or had already led) to lively discussions with Karl-Alex Mueller.

Abstract:Six months ago I was asked to write a personal history of my engagement with the high-Tc problem of the cuprate superconductors, in rather informal and autobiographical style. As the work proceeded I realized that it was impossible and would have been dishonest to separate out my rather amusing but seminal early fumblings from the complete restructuring of the problem which I have achieved during the past decade. But the result became considerably too long, by over half, for its intended recipient. The assignment had left me with no obligation to deal with all the fascinating but irrelevant phenomenology which I had more or less instinctively ignored on my way, but that feature also fails to endear the article to any conceivable editorial board containing knowledgeable experts on the subject. Also, their purpose was for it to serve as a (quote) introduction to the more technical debates, but its message is that almost all of these are not relevant. They are not, on the whole, focused on achieving understanding of the crucial experimental anomalies, many, if not most, of which are now understood. The key to the problem is a new method of dealing with the constrained Hilbert space which follows from the necessity of Gutzwiller projection.

This "marvellous meeting", as Lars quoted in one of his reminiscence article, was organised by Alan Luther. Abstract:This paper is dedicated to the memory of Professor K. Alex Muller. After describing our personal and scientific encounters since 1974, I concentrate on the many puzzles whinch appeared in our discussions and collaborations, involving the interplay between theory and experiments on the critical behavior of cubic perovskites which undergo (second or first) order transitions to a lower symmetry phases (trigonal or tetragonal). The conclusion, reached only very recently, is that (although beginning with the same cubic symmetry) the two types of transitions belong to two distinct universality classes: under [100] stress, the cubic to trigonal transition exhibits a tetracritical phase diagram, with cubic exponents, while the cubic to tetragonal transition exhibit an intermediate bicritical phase diagram, but asymptotically the bicritical point turns into a triple point, with three first order lines. To test these conclusions, it is suggested to measure the effective critical exponents as the temperature approaches criticality.

Abstract:It is a honor to write a contribution on this memorial for Sandro Massidda. For both of us, at different stages of our life, Sandro was first and foremost a friend. We both admired his humble, playful and profound approach to life and physics. In this contribution we describe the route which permitted to meet a long-standing challenge in solid state physics, i.e. room temperature superconductivity. In less than 20 years the Tc of conventional superconductors, which in the last century had been widely believed to be limited to 25 K, was raised from 40 K in MgB2 to 265 K in LaH10. This discovery was enabled by the development and application of computational methods for superconductors, a field in which Sandro Massidda played a major role.

Abstract:One can safely say that the pioneering work of Dr. Ulrich Kogelschatz and his team on the physics and chemistry of the dielectric barrier discharge was foundational and remain of great relevance to the present day. Kogelschatz and his team made some of the early high-resolution measurements of the current pulses associated with filaments and conducted simulations to elucidate the chemical processes taking place in DBD plasmas. On the engineering/technology side, he contributed to the development of DBD-based excimer lamps, to the optimization of DBD-based ozone generators and to many other advancements. His numerous papers on the physics and applications of DBD have educated a generation of researchers involved with such devices. I consider myself one of those students who learned a lot from him, both from his writings and from personal interaction. In this perspective, I first briefly summarize the working of barrier discharges and some of Kogelschatz's contributions to this field. Then, I highlight some of the most valuable interactions I had the privilege to have with him, who I considered to be a mentor and a dear friend for many years. Please note that I use the formal title "Dr. Kogelschatz" in the title and sub-titles but in the text, I use Ulrich (or Uli) as that is how I addressed him in person.

He was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Arizona, well-known for his important contributions in completely integrable systems. He was a fellow of the American Mathematical Society, an awardee of the Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics and one of the founding editors of Physica D. He was held in great esteem by his collaborators and students.
