Abstract:In conjunction with our research article in this issue of Chem, this essay is in memory of Professor Wei Jiang, a rising star in supramolecular chemistry who passed away on December 25th, 2022, from pancreatic cancer. We briefly summarize his research on bionic molecular recognition in water with diverse naphthotubes and their applications in multiple disciplines. Furthermore, we share the kind words of a few acquaintances of Prof. Jiang’s.

Abstract:Our respectful old friend Professor Ting-Peng Liang (in short, TP) whom we loved suddenly passed away on May 20, 2021. But we cannot forget his smile and passion, and his inerasable footprints in PACIS, PAJAIS, and AIS Community. He was the founder of PACIS, founding editor-in-chief of PAJAIS, and past president of AIS to list just a few. He was the pioneer who received the first AIS Fellow and the first LEO Award from Asia Pacific. Abstract:Our mentor of the past two decades, a dear friend and colleague, Dr Hal Weil, died on July 29, 2011 at his Rancho Mirage, California home. This was only 2 weeks after his full time presence in his beloved office at our Institute and 3 days after he completed his National Institutes of Health (NIH) and United States patent applications for an 'Intelligent Alarm System'. The world of critical care medicine and resuscitation medicine has lost a great leader and mentor. He will be dearly missed by all of us, and especially by those who were trained and continuously mentored by him.

Abstract:Electrochemistry intersected nanoscience 25 years ago when it became possible to control the flow of electrons through single molecules and nanostructures. Many surprises and a wealth of understanding were generated by these experiments. Professor Nongjian Tao was among the pioneering scientists who created the methods and technologies for advancing this new frontier. Achieving a deeper understanding of charge transport in molecules and low-dimensional materials was the first priority of his experiments, but he also succeeded in discovering applications in chemical sensing and biosensing for these novel nanoscopic systems. In parallel with this work, the investigation of a range of phenomena using novel optical microscopic methods was a passion of his and his students. This article is a review and an appreciation of some of his many contributions with a view to the future.

Abstract:It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death on February 13, 2014 of Professor Toshisuke Hirano, who was a “father of AOAFST”. At the occasion of the 10th Asia-Oceania Symposium on Fire Science and Technology (10th AOSFST), we share the memories of Prof. Hirano and renew his will on the progress of fire science. In this article, his achievements are summarized, such as the activities in academic societies, achievements on scientific researches, major awards received, and so on. The eulogies given by Prof. Wan-Ki Chow (Hong Kong), Prof. Bogdan Dlugogorski (Australia) and Prof. Patrick van Hees (Sweden), and Prof. Jinhua Sun (China) are included in this article.
