Abstract:Purposeful, intentional, supportive, influential, data driven and kind were how Dr Steven Noel Blair (4 July 1939–6 October 2023) lived his life. Previous tributes have already described his numerous accomplishments, awards and publications, but few have spoken about the full spectrum of his personal life, professional career, and service efforts towards physical activity and public health. He not only advocated for healthier living, but, true to his principles (and the data), he lived it daily. In the quiet spaces of a humble work spreadsheet, where he meticulously tracked his time and effort on projects, service commitments and administration, he also tracked his physical activity for decades weaving a personal narrative into the fabric of scientific inquiry. This was more than a numerical record; it was a testament to his dedication. Abstract:Professor Marjorie Perloff was a distinguished scholar, poetry critic, and theorist. Her profound insights and unique perspectives on modern and contempo-rary American poetry have earned her high recognition in the international academic community. She was not only an Emeritus Professor at Stanford University and the University of Southern California but also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the American Philosophical Society. Her research spanned multiple fields, with outstanding achievements particularly in avant-garde poetry and modernist and postmodernist theory. Her works, including The Poetics of Indeterminacy: Rimbaud to Cage, Radical Artifice: Writing Poetry in the Age of Me-dia, Infrathin: An Experiment in Micropoetics, have not only provided new perspec-tives for understanding modern poetry but also advanced the development of poetry theory, establishing leading theories such as the poetics of indeterminacy and micro-poetics. Professor Perloff also served as the long-term president of China-American Association for Poetry and Poetics, actively promoting cultural exchange between China and the United States and fostering deep cooperation in the field of poetry research. Though Professor Perloff passed away, she has left behind us a valuable academic legacy. We will always keep her in our hearts.

Abstract:We note, with sadness, the passing of Dr. Robert Rosenthal, a longtime member of the Board of Consulting Editors of Social Behavior and Personality: an international journal . SBP’s Editor-in-Chief, Dr Robert A. C. Stewart was privileged to have Dr. Rosenthal as one of his professors while a graduate student at Harvard University in 1964–1965. He well remembers Dr. Rosenthal’s easy, inviting manner as a person. Having chosen to join our Board in the early years of the journal, Dr. Rosenthal was to remain, over the decades, a valued member of our advisory team until his death early this year.

Empirical Studies of the Arts

Abstract:Empirical Studies of the Arts, Ahead of Print. Paul Locher passed away on 20 August 2024. Paul was an outstanding scientist and a central figure in the field of empirical aesthetics. He made important contributions to numerous areas including the study of symmetry, balance, facial attractiveness, museum behaviour, artwork composition and restoration, and aesthetics of food, but in particular to the study of eye movements in aesthetic appreciation of artworks. Indeed, his research on eye tracking is a touchstone for visual perception in empirical aesthetics. Here, a group of Paul's colleagues remember and celebrate him through a set of recollections that honour how he shaped their research and lives. It is hoped that this will offer a glimpse into the wonderful scholar and human being that Paul was, and why he will be sorely missed.

Abstract:Paul Bishop commenced his life in universities at Macquarie University in the School of Earth Sciences. He graduated with First Class Honours in Physical Geography and then went on to complete a PhD in 1984. When I joined the Department of Geography at University of Sydney in 1985, it was a pleasure to meet Paul. He had an adjoining office with another tutor, Peter Cowell, and it was obvious that they both brought intellectual vigour and enthusiasm to physical geography. Together they had what Peter called self-indulgent fun engaging in philosophical questioning of many topics besides sharing a love for classical music. Sadly Paul recently died (age 72) and the lights that he shone on those he worked with have gone out; but he cannot be forgotten. Our deepest condolences to his partner, Geraldine Perriam.

Abstract:Herb Bolotin was an excellent physicist and educator with a sense of fun and unique humor. He came to Australia as the Chamber of Manufacturers Professor of Physics at the University of Melbourne in 1971, a position he held until retirement in 1995. He established nuclear structure research using the new 5U Pelletron accelerator in Melbourne, and his group became regular users of the 14UD Pelletron Accelerator at the Australian National University (now part of the Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility). Upon retirement in 1996 Herb changed direction and worked successfully on bone densitometry as Emeritus Professor at Melbourne and then as Adjunct Professor at RMIT. He published in this field until 2009. He died suddenly on July 8th 2020.

Abstract:William Kruskal (Bill) was a distinguished statistician who spent virtually his entire professional career at the University of Chicago, and who had a lasting impact on the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and on the field of statistics more broadly, as well as on many who came in contact with him. Bill passed away last April following an extended illness, and on May 19, 2005, the University of Chicago held a memorial service at which several of Bill's colleagues and collaborators spoke along with members of his family and other friends. This biography and the accompanying commentaries derive in part from brief presentations on that occasion, along with recollections and input from several others. Bill was known personally to most of an older generation of statisticians as an editor and as an intellectual and professional leader. In 1994, Statistical Science published an interview by Sandy Zabell (Vol. 9, 285--303) in which Bill looked back on selected events in his professional life. One of the purposes of the present biography and accompanying commentaries is to reintroduce him to old friends and to introduce him for the first time to new generations of statisticians who never had an opportunity to interact with him and to fall under his influence.
