Abstract:A top emitting organic light emitting diode‐on‐silicon (OLEDoS) panel with aluminum (Al) anode for high‐resolution microdisplays was proposed and fabricated. The low work function of the Al anode increases the energy barrier of the interface between the anode and hole injection layer (HIL), and has poor hole‐injection properties, which causes the low efficiency of the device. To enhance the hole‐injection characteristics of the Al anode, we applied optimized HIL and hole transportation layer (HTL) materials. The proposed single stack structure white OLED display panel with Al anode was fabricated on CMOS backplane and the white OLED device improved efficiency by up to 20 cd/A at 1000 nit, which is 90% of the level of conventional OLEDs with indium tin oxide (ITO) anode.

Abstract:Top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) using aluminium (Al) and nickel (Ni) as the anode and Al as the semitransparent cathode were developed. Hole injection was largely improved by spin coating poly(ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT) on the metal anode. For top-emitting OLEDs with a configuration of metal anode/PEDOT/NPB/Alq(3)/LiF/Al/Alq(3), both devices using Al and Al/Ni anodes showed efficient green light emission with a narrow emission peak. Current efficiency was increased from 4.32 cd A(-1) to 6.45 cd A(-1) when replacing high work function Ni with low work function At as the anode. A luminance of 20 000 cd m(-2) can be achieved for these top-emitting OLEDs, The device made with the Al/Ni anode showed a low driving voltage and high power efficiency as compared to that made with the At anode. The improvement on light-emitting efficiency was attributed to balanced charge carrier injection and utilization of the high reflective semitransparent Al cathode.

Abstract:It is generally recognized that hole‐transport layers (HTLs) with thickness on the order of tens nanometer are indispensable to high luminance and quantum efficiency in small molecule organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, in this work, without conventional HTLs, a thin polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) layer was introduced as hole‐injection layer, followed by deposition of an emissive layer (EML), Alq 3 doped with 0.7wt% DMQA. And simultaneously, a blocking and electron transport layer of aluminum (III) bis (2‐methyl‐8‐quinolinato) 4‐phenylphenolate (BAlq) ETL was employed to confine holes and excitons in Alq 3 layer. The obtained OLEDs exhibited a luminance of over 88000 cd/m 2 and external quantum efficiency of 5.4% (21.1 cd/A) at voltage of 19.8 V and current density of 418 mA/cm 2 . When the Teflon thickness was 10.0 nm under our conditions, well‐balanced charge injection could be obtained in OLEDs. It was also found that the high performance was related to triplet‐triple annihilation, in which triplet excited tris (8‐hydroxyquinoline) aluminum ( 3 Alq 3 *) excitons go through annihilative reactions with other 3 Alq 3 * excitons to form singlet excited molecules. It provides a new way of obtaining highly efficient and stable OLEDs with well‐balanced charge injection.
Pure Aluminum As the Anode in Top Emission Oled

Abstract:Good performance top emitting organic light emitting diode (TOLED) with pure aluminum metal layer as the bottom anode has been fabricated. The brightness of the device could reach 4500cd/m(2) at applied voltage 12 V. The highest current efficiency is about 6.8cd/A at a driving current density 50mA/cm(2), which is much higher than that of the standard device and nearly twice as high as that of the TOLED with additional high work function silver deposited on aluminum as the anode.

Abstract:High-performance top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (TEOLEDs) integrating the metal/ITO composite anodes were developed. The results revealed that covering the surface of Al anode with ITO layer could effectively improve the charge injection efficiency and balance the hole-electron charge. The effect of the thickness of ITO on the performance of TEOLEDs with Al/ITO anodes was further studied. The TEOLEDs with Al/ITO (5 nm) anode showed optimized performance, with the current efficiency (CE) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) enhanced by 40.0% and 34.5% compared to that of the OELD with pure Al anode, and increased by 93.1% and 33.5% compared to that of bottom-emitting OLEDs. In addition, the full width at half maximum (FWHM) was narrowed to 36 nm due to the micro-cavity effect of the top-emitting structure and the turn-on voltage decreased to as low as 2.3 V owing to the efficient charge injection and well-matched energy level. In addition, TEOLEDs using Ag/ITO as anode exhibited a slow roll-off of CE and EQE and a narrower FWHM of 30 nm, greatly improving the color purity. The strategy is simple and can significantly improve the efficiency of the TEOLEDs, which promotes the applications of OLEDs in the fields of ultra-high-definition displays and micro-displays.

Abstract:A 4,4('),4(')-tris(3-methylphenylphenylamino)triphenylamine thin film doped with Fe3O4 has been demonstrated an efficient p-type hole-injection layer (HIL) in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). The tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum-based OLEDs with the p-type HIL exhibit a very low turn-on voltage of 2.4 V and a high luminance of 29 360 cd/m(2) at 8 V, while it is 3 V and 6005 cd/m(2), respectively, for the nondoped devices. The improvement in the device performance is clarified as arising from the improved hole injection and transport by the results of ultraviolet/visible/near-infrared absorption, x-ray photoelectron spectra and current density-voltage characteristics of hole-only devices.

Abstract:We report the fabrication of a vacuum-deposited light-emitting device which emits light from its top surface through an Al cathode using p-type doped silicon as the anode material. Enhanced hole injection is clearly demonstrated from the p-Si anode as compared to the indium–tin–oxide (ITO) anode. The mechanisms of hole injection from both the p-Si and ITO anodes into the organic layer are investigated and a possible model based on anode surface band bending is proposed. During the operation of the organic light-emitting device, the surface band bending of the anode plays a very important role in modifying the interfacial barrier height between the anode and the organic layer.

Abstract:The effective reflective anode remains a highly desirable component for the fabrication of reliable top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (TE-OLEDs) which have the potential to be integrated with complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) circuits for microdisplays. This work demonstrates a novel laminated anode consisting of a Cr/Al/Cr multilayer stack. Furthermore, we implement an ultra-thin titanium nitride (TiN) layer as a protective layer on the top of the Cr/Al/Cr composite anode, which creates a considerably reflective surface in the visible range, and meanwhile improves the chemical stability of the electrode against the atmosphere or alkali environment. Based on [2-(2-pyridinyl-N)phenyl-C](acetylacetonate)iridium(III) as green emitter and Mg/Ag as transparent cathode, our TE-OLED using the TiN-coated anode achieves the maximum current efficiency of 71.2 cd/A and the maximum power efficiency of 66.7 lm/W, which are 81% and 90% higher than those of the reference device without TiN, respectively. The good device performance shows that the Cr/Al/Cr/TiN could function as a promising reflective anode for the high-resolution microdisplays on CMOS circuits.

Abstract:Traditionally, n-type silicon is not regarded as a good anode of organic light emitting diode (OLED) due to the extremely low hole concentration in it; however, when doped with Au element which acts as carrier generation centers, it can be, as shown in our previous work. In this study, we demonstrate a new kind of carrier generation centers in n + -type silicon, which are the defects produced by 5 MeV electron irradiation. The density of carrier generation centers in the irradiated n + -Si anode can be controlled by tuning the electron irradiation time, and thus hole injection current in the OLEDs with the irradiated n + -Si anode can be optimized, leading to their much higher maximum efficiencies than those of the OLEDs with non-irradiated n + -Si anode. For a green phosphorescent OLED with the irradiated n + -Si anode, the current efficiency and power efficiency reach up to 12.1 cd/A and 4.2 lm/W, respectively.

Abstract:Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) require several organic layers, including carrier injection layers, charge transport layers, and light-emitting layers (EML). Recently, many panel companies have been using layers with a dual function of charge transport and blocking to simplify the layer structure. At the same time, efficient charge injection into the EML is required to improve the device characteristics. In particular, the hole injection properties are important in devices using phosphorescent emitters because it is a major factor in forming the broad recombination zone. This study reports the factors influencing the device performances using three OLEDs with different electron-blocking layers (EBL). By adjusting the EBL’s energy levels, it is possible to form a broad recombination zone and reduce hole accumulation and polaron-induced stress at the interface. In addition, the wide dispersion of exciton formation reduces the overcrowding of exciton which induces exciton quenching and relieves an efficiency roll-off at high luminance. Consequently, the external quantum efficiency of N-([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-N-(9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)-11,11-dimethyl-11H-benzo[b]fluoren-3-amine with a relatively deep HOMO level is increased by more than 2% with a relaxed roll-off of 7% at 3000 cd/m2 and a device lifetime is increased fivefold compared to those of N-([1,1′-biphenyl]-4-yl)-N-(9,9-dimethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)-11,11-dimethyl-11H-benzo[b]fluoren-2-amine with a relatively shallow HOMO level.

Abstract:We find that hole injection can be enhanced simply by selecting a lower-resistivity p-Si anode to match an electron injection enhancement for organic light emitting diodes with ultrathin-SiO2-layer-passivated p-Si anode (Si-OLED). For a Si-OLED with ordinary AlQ electron transport layer, the optimized resistivity of the p-Si anode is 40 Omega cm; for that with n-doped Bphen electron transport layer, it decreases to 5 Omega cm. Correspondingly, the maximum power efficiency increases from 0.3 to 1.9 lm/W, even higher than that of an indium tin oxide control device (1.4 lm/W). This passivated p-type silicon is a hole injection tunable anode material for OLED. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:Top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (TOLEDs) employing highly reflective Ag as anode and semitransparent LiF∕Al∕Ag as cathode were fabricated. The hole injection efficiency of Ag anode can be significantly improved with surface modification using a CF4 plasma. With C545T-doped Alq3 emitter, the top-emitting device shows a low turn-on voltage of 2.65V. The optimized microcavity TOLED shows a current efficiency enhancement of 65% and a total outcoupling efficiency enhancement of 35%, compared with a conventional OLED. No color variation was observed in the forward 140° forward viewing cone. Strong dependence of efficiency on Ag cathode thickness was observed, in good agreement with numerical simulations.

Abstract:Fabrication of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and lasers on silicon substrates is a feasible route to integrate microelectronic chips with optical devices for telecommunications. However, the efficiency of Si-anode based OLEDs is restricted by the imbalance of hole–electron injection because a p-type Si anode owns better hole injection ability than ITO. We have used fluorinated tris-(8-hydroxy-quinolinato) aluminum (FAlq3) derivatives to prepare Si-anode based OLEDs. We observed that, when tris-(5-fuloro-8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum (5FAlq3) is used as the electron-transporting material instead of Alq3, the cathode electron injection is enhanced due to its lower lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) compared to the Alq3. The device can keep the relative carrier balance even when a Si anode capable of stronger hole injection was used. Further optimization of the device structure by introducing 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (BCP) as a hole blocking layer showed significant increase in the device power efficiency from 0.029 to 0.462lm/W. This indicates that use of fluorinated Alq3 derivatives is an effective way to improve the performance of Si-anode based OLEDs.

Abstract:Top‐emitting organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) are of interest for numerous applications, in particular for displays with high fill factors. To maximize efficiency and luminance, molecular p‐doping of the hole transport layer (p‐HTL) and a highly reflective anode contact, for example, made from silver, are used. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is attractive for thin film encapsulation of OLEDs but generally requires a minimum process temperature of 80 °C. Here it is reported that the interface between the p‐HTL and the silver anode of top‐emitting OLEDs degrades during an 80 °C ALD encapsulation process, causing an over fourfold reduction in OLED current and luminance. To understand the underlying mechanism of device degradation, single charge carrier devices are investigated before and after annealing. A spectroscopic study of p‐HTLs indicates that degradation is due to the interaction between diffusing silver ions and the p‐type molecular dopant. To improve the stability of the interface, either an ultrathin MoO3 buffer layer or a bilayer HTL is inserted at the anode/organic interface. Both approaches effectively suppress degradation. This work shows a route to successful encapsulation of top‐emitting OLEDs using ALD without sacrificing device performance.

High Luminance Organic Light-Emitting Diodes with Efficient Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Hole Injectors

Abstract:We report high luminance organic light-emitting diodes by use of acid functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (o-MWCNTs) as efficient hole injector electrodes with a simple and solution processable device structure. At only 10 V, the luminance can reach nearly 50,000 cd/m2 with an external quantum efficiency over 2% and a current efficiency greater than 21 cd/A. The investigation of hole-only devices shows that the mechanism for hole injection is changed from injection limited to bulk limited because of the higher effective work function of the anode modified by the o-MWCNTs. We expect the enhancement of the local electric field brought about by both the dielectric inhomogeneities within the o-MWCNT containing anode and the high aspect ratio carbon nanotubes, improves hole injection from the anode to organic active layer at much lower applied voltage.
Enhanced light emission from top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes by optimizing surface plasmon polariton losses

Abstract:We demonstrate enhanced light extraction for monochrome top-emitting organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). The enhancement by a factor of 1.2 compared to a reference sample is caused by the use of a hole transport layer (HTL) material possessing a low refractive index (1.52). The low refractive index reduces the in-plane wave vector of the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) excited at the interface between the bottom opaque metallic electrode (anode) and the HTL. The shift of the SPP dispersion relation decreases the power dissipated into lost evanescent excitations and thus increases the outcoupling efficiency, although the SPP remains constant in intensity. The proposed method is suitable for emitter materials owning isotropic orientation of the transition dipole moments as well as anisotropic, preferentially horizontal orientation, resulting in comparable enhancement factors. Furthermore, for sufficiently low refractive indices of the HTL material, the SPP can be modeled as a propagating plane wave within other organic materials in the optical microcavity. Thus, by applying further extraction methods, such as micro lenses or Bragg gratings, it would become feasible to obtain even higher enhancements of the light extraction.

Abstract:A top-emission organic light-emitting diode (TEOLED) with a p-type silicon anode and a semitransparent samarium/gold cathode has been constructed and studied. With a structure of Al∕p-Si∕SiOx∕N,N′-bis-(1-naphthl)-diphenyl-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine(NPB)∕Tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum(Alq)∕LiF∕Al, we have found that compared to indium-tin-oxide, the p-Si anode enhances the unbalance between electron- and hole-injection, which is a disadvantage factor for the light-emitting efficiency of the TEOLED. Selecting p-Si wafers with suitable electric resistivities and inserting an ultrathin low temperature grown SiOx layer of about 1.5nm between the anode and NPB can effectively restrict hole-injection. Moreover, a low work function Sm∕Au cathode was used to enhance electron-injection. The electroluminescence efficiency of the TEOLED depends on the thickness of the Sm layer in the cathode. A current efficiency of 0.55cd∕A and a power efficiency of 0.07lm∕W have been reached.

Abstract:This letter reports that the 1.54μm electroluminescence efficiency of the organic light emitting diode (OLED) with a structure of nanometer thick polycrystalline silicon (NTPS)/NPB/ErQ/AlQ/Al is two orders of magnitude higher than that of the OLED with a structure of thick crystalline silicon/NPB/ErQ/Al, which is similar to the OLED reported in literature [Curry et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 77, 2271 (2000)]. Such an improvement is mainly attributed to the fact that hole injection is controlled by NTPS anode and holes are blocked by AlQ to match electron injection, and a higher light out coupling as well.
