Abstract:This study investigates the change in the acoustic emission (AE) parameters emitted in rubberized concrete under abrasion action at a sub-freezing temperature (−20°C). Seven concrete mixtures were developed with two coarse-to-fine aggregate ratios (C/F) (2.0 and 0.7), various crumb rubber (CR) content (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%), and different rubber particle sizes [4.5 mm CR and 0.4 mm powder rubber (PR)]. Rotating cutter tests were conducted on three 100 mm cubic samples from each mixture at −20°C and 25°C while monitored via an AE system. AE parameters such as amplitude, number of hits, and signal strength were collected and underwent two parameter-based analyses: b-value and intensity analysis approaches, resulting in three additional parameters: b-value, severity (Sr), and the historic index [H(t)]. Results showed that testing concrete samples under abrasion at cold temperature,−20°C, resulted in a decrease in the emitted number of hits, cumulative signal strength (CSS), Sr, H(t), and an increase in b-values compared to testing at 25°C. Furthermore, incorporating rubber particles was found to decrease the AE signals’ amplitudes significantly at 25°C and slightly at −20°C, which manifested the higher wave attenuation occurrence at ambient temperature compared to cold temperature. AE analysis also showed a decrease in the abrasion resistance for mixtures with higher C/F, higher CR content, and larger rubber particle size. These decreases were more noticeable at 25°C compared to −20°C. Finally, the study developed two damage classification charts to estimate the ranges of abrasion mass loss percentage and wear depth in terms of the intensity analysis parameters: Sr and H(t).

Abstract:A summary of observations on acoustic emissions made during uniaxial compression testing of several brittle rock types (granite, limestone and tuff) will be presented. Acoustic emission observations include statistical parameters; i.e., cumulative events, energy and frequency characteristics, etc. Using the servo-control and high-stiffness testing machine, observation results show not only the brittleness features but also AE characteristics in both pre- and post-peak region.

Abstract:The tension damage function is an important component in concrete constitutive models. However, it is difficult to experimentally establish the complete tensile response due to the brittle behavior of concrete. This paper utilizes an acoustic emission (AE) monitoring method to determine the strain energy release within the fracture process zone (FPZ) of concrete. A total of 12 specimens with three different concrete strengths were subjected to three-point bending tests. The fracture mode, micro cracking initiation and propagation, strain energy release and macro-crack development of the specimens were identified by the AE technique. Based on the definition of the proposed tension damage function, an empirical expression was developed by using the strain test data in the FPZ and the monitored AE energy data. The proposed model is validated using experimental data from uniaxial monotonic and cyclic loading tests as well as comparison with existing models in the literature. The results show that the proposed model can reliably predict the strength, softening branch, unloading and stiffness degradation of concrete in uniaxial tension.

Abstract:Rock mass containing central locked segments is susceptible to freeze–thaw weathering and could result in rock instability and even serious geological hazards. This work conducts uniaxial compression and acoustic emission synchronization tests to experimentally investigate the rock bridge deformation and failure characteristics of central locked samples drilled from plateaus in China. The influences of freeze–thaw cycles and rock bridge angle on the fracturing and acoustic emission pattern were characterized. Results show that the physical and mechanical parameters deteriorate in varying degrees with the increase of freeze–thaw cycles. The compression stress curves display as fluctuation trend and multiple stress drops, indicating that the rock bridge improves the plastic properties of samples. The points of stress drops are in good agreement with sudden increment of acoustic emission count curve. The acoustic emission count and released acoustic emission energy decrease with the increase of freeze–thaw cycles. The damage model established based on acoustic emission parameters reflects the process of crack propagation and coalescence of central locked sample subjected to freeze–thaw cycles during uniaxial compression. Damage variable evolution rate decreases with increasing of freeze–thaw cycles. The damage evolution rate and the associated crack growth rate is the smallest for a rock with bridge angle of 30 °.

Abstract:Four-point bending tests of self-compacting concrete with different rubber contents were conducted, and the acoustic emission (AE) technique was used to monitor the fracture process. The evolution law of rise angle (RA), average frequency (AF), and AE intensity was analyzed, and the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) was used for clustering analysis of crack mode in different loading stages. The results clarify that the safe regions of self-compacting rubberized concrete (SCRC) were proposed based on AE intensity. Both the slope of the cumulative RA–AF curve and the average value of RA and AF had a quantitative relationship with rubber content. Rubber content had little effect on crack mode. The failure process of SCRC with rubber contents of 0%–30% was dominated by the tensile crack mode, and the maximum proportion of shear cracks appeared in the postpeak loading stage (40%–20%), which can be considered as warning value of concrete bending failure. The results can provide a theoretical reference for the early warning of SCRC failure.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of the freeze-thaw cycles on the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete members. The variation of the concrete stress-strain relationship due to frozen-thawed deterioration was considered. The temperature distribution was calculated based on the heat conduction theory, and the damaged region affected by freeze-thaw cycles was determined. By using Reponse-2000 program, the flexural behaviour of a reinforced concrete slab was analyzed and predicted. The analytical results show that with increase of number of freeze-thaw cycles, the yield moment, the ultimate moment and the curvature ductility decreased, while the relative depth of neutral axis and the midspan deflection increased.

Abstract:Insufficient research has been done on the mechanical and thermal properties of rubber concrete in the presence of fire. In this paper, we do detailed numerical modeling of the rubber concrete's thermomechanical behavior under dynamic conditions at high temperatures (800°C) using different percentages of rubber aggregate (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%). The novelty of this work lies in its analysis of the temperature profiles over time in rubber concrete. This analysis is carried out using finite difference models developed with the MATLAB tool to predict thermomechanical parameters such as elastic modulus, thermal strain, tensile strength, and compressive strength. In addition, the dynamic behavior of the rubber concrete under impact loading was predicted, including stress and velocity change as a function of time at elevated temperatures. By the equations of motion and transient conduction, the mathematical model developed is based on density, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and thermal expansion. The comparison between numerical and experimental results, and the analysis of the influence of the percentage of rubber aggregates on thermomechanical parameters, as well as the influence of temperature on the evolution of stress and velocity as a function of time, have shown the effectiveness of the mathematical and numerical model developed.

Abstract:Eco-friendly recycled tire-derived rubberized concrete is an environmentally conscious alternative employed in civil engineering for diverse purposes, enhancing the characteristics of concrete. In this paper, the research focuses on examining the drying shrinkage, creep, impact, and post-impact and creep behavior of concrete incorporating rubber. Four groups of cylindrical samples, each with a diameter of 150 mm and a length of 300 mm, were subjected to a consistent load corresponding to 0.25 of the bearing load capacity determined through compression tests on identical concrete mixtures. The testing spanned a year, during which measurements were taken for total strain, dependent strain, creep, and shrinkage. The concrete mixtures were formulated with crumb rubber in place of fine aggregate sand, with varying percentages (0%, 10%, 20%, and 30%). To emphasize distinctions in outcomes across mixtures with different crumb rubber proportions, tests for compression, indirect tension, flexural strength, and impact resistance were carried out at intervals of 28 days, three months, six months, and one year. The examination and contrast of the four combinations demonstrated notable effects on both concrete creep and impact energy due to the addition of rubber particles. Despite this, shrinkage showed minimal influence. In general, there was a decrease in the compressive strength of rubberized concrete. The concrete compressive strength decreased by 25–35%, 45–50%, and 55–65% for rubberized concrete incorporating 10%, 20%, and 30% crumb rubber, respectively. Furthermore, it was observed that creep negatively affects the impact resistance of non-rubberized concrete. Nevertheless, including rubber helps mitigate the effect of creep on the impact resistance, resulting in a reduction ranging from 6% to 12% across rubber percentages from 10% to 30%.

Abstract:<p>In this study, acoustic emission (AE) was used to monitor the whole process of tensile and fracture of the self‐compacting rubber concrete (SCRC) under four‐point bending. The AE activities of SCRC during the stretching and fracture process were analyzed by statistical methods to correlate the process of crack propagation with changes in mechanical properties. And by comparing the tensile and fracture properties, the change patterns of crack mode, the cumulative events and energy of AE in the bending process of SCRC with different rubber particles content, the influence of the incorporated rubber particles on the propagation of microcracks, and the macroscopic fracture mechanism were analyzed. Studies showed that with the incorporation of rubber particles, the ductility of the concrete before and after cracking was improved. Due to the weak bonding surface between the rubber particles and the matrix, the microcracks began to propagate at low‐stress levels and developed steadily throughout the stretching process. As the rubber content increased, more rubber components participated in the tensile and fracture process. Because of the elastic stretching of rubber particles, the tensile deformation capacity and fracture properties of the concrete have been improved. And in the whole process of tensile and fracture, the cracking of the weak cemented surface of the matrix and the pulling of the rubber particles were more likely to cause shear mode cracks.</p>

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of high temperature (25-800 degrees C) on mechanical properties of concrete, uniaxial compression test is carried out to study the relationship between compressive strength and temperature, and the crack development in concrete specimen is monitored based on the acoustic emission (AE) phenomenon to reflect the change of internal cracks of concrete specimen under load. The test results show that the compressive strength of concrete is not obvious when the temperature is below 400 degrees C, but decreases with the increase of temperature and to 20% of that at room temperature when the temperature reaches 800 degrees C. The AE activity in the whole loading process and the cumulative counts and AE energy increase sharply to the critical point C until the specimens are completely damaged. The higher the temperature is, the more seriously the specimens are damaged and the less the acoustic emission signal is generated at the dynamic loading stage. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Tension is the main mechanical form for concrete structures. The characteristics of concrete failure process under tension is an important part of concrete failure mechanism study [1], because tension of concrete is weak and concrete tends to crack. The post-peak softening response of concrete in direct tension seems primarily related to widening of a single crack, and the post-cracking resistance of concrete may be due to discontinuities in cracking at the submicroscopic level and to bridging of cracked surfaces by aggregates. Acoustic emission, a kind of real-time technique, detects microcrack activities in high sensitivity, thus it is widely used in concrete study. In this paper, the development and evolution of microcracks are studied by analyzing the AE signals of concrete specimens under uniaxial tension.

Abstract:Expansive soil in the seasonally frozen region undergoes a long-term cycle of freezing and thawing. The complex and diverse crack shape that results from repeated swell-shrink distortion of expansive soil poses a serious threat to engineering. Expansive soil-rubber mixture (ESR) improves swelling-shrinkage characteristic and the mechanical properties of expansive soil. Using ESR and expansive soil as test objects, we investigate the effect of rubber powder on the characteristics of expansive soil crack evolution under freeze-thaw cycles. Image processing technologies are used to provide quantitative analysis of the crack images obtained from the test. The results showed that after freeze-thaw cycles, the cracks in the expansive soil specimens had a grid-like and bifurcated pattern with 90° and 120° bifurcations, but the cracks in the ESR specimens had a jagged and dendritic distribution. Comparing ESR and expansive soils, adding 5% rubber powder effectively lowers the complexity of crack evolution and surface crack ratios. The interlocking action of the rubber particles resists the freezing tension on the soil particles, effectively restricting the deformation and opening of the soil particles, decreasing water evaporation and the formation of cracks. In addition, the fractal dimension of ESR and the surface crack ratios satisfy the unique functional relationship under freeze-thaw cycling conditions. Consequently, adding 5% rubber powder to expansive soils might be a realistic and creative strategy for minimizing crack formation in the soil in the seasonal frozen region.

Abstract:In cold regions, concrete structures suffer from low temperatures, where damage will initiate due to the expansion of ice formation and accumulate with water supply to keep penetrating into the pores and cracks. Meanwhile, it is found that the mechanical properties of cementitious materials can be enhanced owing to the pores filled by ice. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the freezing process, in which the freezing action can have both strengthening and damaging effects on the mechanical properties of concrete material, depending on several environmental and material factors. Besides, if temperature remains negative, the capacity of cementitious materials in service with ice presented inside pores and cracks are also important. However, there is still lack of effective evaluation methods for the mechanical properties of frozen concrete. In this study, cementitious materials with/without air entraining agent (AEA) of different water-to-cement ratios (W/C) are prepared and tested at low temperatures (−10, −20, −30 and −40 °C). The results show that the mechanical properties of the materials (compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, dynamic elastic modulus) are closely related to electrical resistivity, which is further explained by the impact of air voids and pore structures from a multiscale scheme. It proves that the change of resistivity could be adopted as the index to evaluate the performance of frozen concrete, and an empirical model is derived based on the experiment results.

Abstract:The acoustic emission (AE) method is a nondestructive test method used when monitoring the damage propagation by detecting high-frequency elastic waves produced by the refraction process. Self-compacting concrete (SCC) is a special type of concrete that does not require vibration, has excellent fluidity, and is resistant to segregation. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the functioning of the AE technique, which is frequently used in normal concrete, in the behavior of SCC. For this purpose, simultaneous monitoring of SCCs under uniaxial compression load was performed with the AE method. In the concrete production, CEM I 42.5 R cement was used as binder, and fly ash (FA) and marble powder (MP) were used as mineral additives. The mineral additives used in the mixture were replaced with cement at a rate of 20%. In addition to the compressive strength of SCCs, crack analysis, AE amplitude, AE energy, ringing counts, and cumulative count results were investigated as a result of AE measurements. With the AE parameters obtained as a result of the simultaneous measurement, the behavior of SCCs under uniaxial load was successfully monitored. It has been observed that the behavior of SCC using different mineral additives changes according to the mineral additive type. Although the differences in compressive strengths are small, it has been demonstrated that the AE method can be followed successfully in different concrete types and different contents and the behavioral differences are revealed.

Abstract:Basalt fiber and crumb rubber, as excellent road material modifiers, have great advantages in improving the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of concrete. Acoustic emission (AE) is a nondestructive testing and real-time monitoring technique used to characterize the fracture behavior of concrete specimens. The object of this paper is to investigate the effects of crumb rubber replacement rate, basalt fiber content and water–binder ratio on the mechanical properties and fracture behavior of crumb rubber basalt fiber concrete (CRBFC) based on orthogonal test. The fracture behavior of a CRBFC specimen under three-point flexural conditions was monitored by AE technology and the relative cumulative hit (RCH) was defined to characterize the internal damage degree of CRBFC. The experimental results showed that, considering the mechanical strength and fracture damage behavior of CRBFC, the optimal crumb rubber replacement rate, basalt fiber content and water–binder ratio are 10%, 2 kg/m3 and 0.46, respectively. In addition, it was found that AE parameters can effectively characterize the fracture behavior of CRBFC. The fracture stages of CRBFC can be divided according to the cumulative AE hits and counts. AE amplitude value can be used as an early warning of CRBFC specimen fracture. Moreover, the fracture mode can be identified by RA and average frequency (AF) values variation during the loading process.

Abstract:Studying how soft rocks behave dynamically in water-rich settings is vital for ensuring sustainable coal extraction from deep water-saturated soft rock mines. A dynamic disturbance loading system utilizing creep-impact dynamics was employed to analyze the mechanical traits and acoustic emission behaviors of both dry and fully saturated soft rock. Expanding on uniaxial compression tests as a foundational framework, additional experiments involving dynamic disturbances and acoustic emission observations were carried out on the aforementioned soft rock samples. These experiments encompassed a spectrum of cyclic disturbance amplitudes ranging from 2 kN to 10 kN. Experimental results indicated the following: (1) during dynamic disturbance, the hysteresis loop exhibits a "sparse to dense" variation. When subjected to the same number of disturbances, the hysteresis loop takes on a pointed leaf-like shape, which increases with the amplitude of the disturbances. (2) The pinnacle of intensity and the elastic modulus of the samples, when exposed to diverse amplitudes of disturbances, can be categorized into a strengthening phase and weakening phase. The reinforcement effect is highest for both samples under the effect of a perturbation of 4 amplitudes. (3) Under the action of disturbances at various amplitudes, the acoustic emission signals from the samples can be classified into four stages. In all stages, the maximum acoustic emission signals exhibited by the desiccated samples surpass those emanated from the saturated samples. In the fluctuation period (II), dry and saturated samples exhibit a cyclic strengthening effect, which becomes more pronounced as the amplitude increases. The study results offer theoretical support for understanding deformation and instability mechanisms in roadways of deep water-saturated soft rock mines, which is essential for ensuring sustainable coal resource development.
