Abstract:The mechanical properties of concrete undergoing the action from cryogenic temperatures(CTs) and CTs back to normal temperatures cycle(CTCs) are discussed by the tests.From the test results it can be shown that the compressive strength and elastic modulus of concrete increase with the decline in the CTs,and reach their ultimate values at about-130℃,but there are reverse results for the temperature action from CTs back to normal temperatures.The peak strain has little change with the decline in the CTs for the temperature action whether under CTs or CTCs.The shrinkage strain at CTs has little change at first and then increases linearly with the decline in the CTs,and the residual strain for the CTCs action has a similar changing regularity.These research results can provide references to the design of concrete structures at CTs circumstances.

Abstract:Formation of ice plays a key role in the behavior of concrete materials at low temperatures in cold and wet regions. The internal stresses generated during the freeze-thaw process could cause serious damage and other durability problems to concrete structures. However, just concerning the stage while the temperature is below 0 degrees C, ice could reduce the stress concentration in the porous matrix by filling the capillary pores and result in a significant increase of elastic modulus and strength, which is usually beneficial for concrete under mechanical loads (either static or fatigue). Meanwhile, pore pressures at low temperatures will also play an important role in either accelerating or delaying the microcracking. In order to establish a mesoscale approach [which usually treats concrete as a composition of coarse aggregate, mortar, and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) between them] based on the rigid-body spring method (RBSM) for the aforementioned issues, in the first stage, the ice-strengthened elastic properties of the mortar are estimated based on multiscale continuous micromechanics. Then a mesoscale model based on RBSM is developed to simulate the nonlinear mechanical behavior under uniaxial compression, tension, and splitting for concrete, in which the ice-strengthened elastic properties in mortar and ITZ, as well as the pore pressures caused by ice formation, are taken into consideration. The range and tendency of the simulated strength values agree well with experimental data. (C) 2017 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:In recent years the application of concrete material in environment with very low temperatures is on the rise. However, systematic knowledge on the mechanical behavior of concrete at low temperatures are not readily available for most researchers and engineers. In the 1970s to 1980s the cryogenic behavior of concrete was intensively studied by researchers from western countries, but after that relevant research activities decreased until it regains researchers’ interests in recent years. Boosted by the rapid development of economy in China, Chinese researchers start to focus on this topic again and have contributed some new knowledge in this respect. To help researchers and engineers design, analyze and construct concrete structures in the cryogenic environment, this paper presents a literature review on the mechanical properties of concrete subjected to low temperatures and cryogenic freeze-thaw cycles. First the effects of low temperatures on the main properties of concrete including compressive strength, tensile strength, elastic modulus, etc., are reviewed and the existing mathematical models are summarized and compared. In the second part, the concrete damage induced by cryogenic freeze-thaw cycles is discussed, and emphasis is put on the mechanism of cryogenic freeze-thaw damage. The complied conclusions by the review paper can facilitate and safeguard the application of concrete structures at very low temperatures.

Abstract:In cold regions, concrete structures suffer from low temperatures, where damage will initiate due to the expansion of ice formation and accumulate with water supply to keep penetrating into the pores and cracks. Meanwhile, it is found that the mechanical properties of cementitious materials can be enhanced owing to the pores filled by ice. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the freezing process, in which the freezing action can have both strengthening and damaging effects on the mechanical properties of concrete material, depending on several environmental and material factors. Besides, if temperature remains negative, the capacity of cementitious materials in service with ice presented inside pores and cracks are also important. However, there is still lack of effective evaluation methods for the mechanical properties of frozen concrete. In this study, cementitious materials with/without air entraining agent (AEA) of different water-to-cement ratios (W/C) are prepared and tested at low temperatures (−10, −20, −30 and −40 °C). The results show that the mechanical properties of the materials (compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, dynamic elastic modulus) are closely related to electrical resistivity, which is further explained by the impact of air voids and pore structures from a multiscale scheme. It proves that the change of resistivity could be adopted as the index to evaluate the performance of frozen concrete, and an empirical model is derived based on the experiment results.

Abstract:As construction projects in cold regions continue to increase, it has become necessary to understand the performance of concrete at low temperatures. Conducting uniaxial compressive tests on non-standard prismatic concrete specimens under low-temperature conditions and analyzing the test results allows for a comprehensive understanding of the strength variations of concrete with different strength grades at temperatures of 20 °C, 0 °C, −20 °C, −30 °C, and −40 °C. When the temperature decreases from 20 °C to 0 °C, the compressive strength of the specimens decreases, while the elastic modulus and peak strain increase. As the temperature continues to decrease, the compressive strength of the specimens increases, the elastic modulus continues to grow, and the peak strain decreases. The rising segments of the curves can be fitted using a cubic polynomial, and as the temperature decreases further, the parameters of the fitting curve gradually decrease. For concrete, being the most widely used material in the construction field, understanding its performance in low-temperature environments has become a significant research topic in the field of materials engineering and construction.

Abstract:As a promising and sustainable construction material, alkali-activated concrete (AAC) may be exposed to harsh cryogenic environments. However, the mechanical and fracture properties of AAC at cryogenic temperatures remain unexplored. This study focuses on the mechanical and fracture performances, i.e., compressive strength, elastic modulus, splitting tensile strength, fracture energy, characteristic length and fracture toughness of AAC with two strength grades exposed to cryogenic temperatures as low as −160 °C. According to the test results, the mechanical and fracture properties of the AAC enhanced dramatically as temperature decreased. Due to the high moisture content and water-accessible porosity, the mechanical and fracture properties of AAC with lower strength grades were more susceptible to low temperatures. Compared to ordinary Portland cement-based concrete (OPC) with similar strength grades, AAC exhibited superior mechanical and fracture characteristics at comparable temperatures. Based on the test data, empirical relations were proposed to correlate the mechanical/fracture performances of AAC and temperatures.

Abstract:This study focuses on the cryogenic mechanical property of carbon fibre reinforced epoxy resin composite (CFRP) unidirectional laminate, and the cryogenic evolution mechanism is discussed from the microstructural perspective of resin free volume and intermolecular forces. The primary transition temperature (147 degrees C) and the secondary transition temperature (-25 degrees C) is identified through dynamic mechanical analysis. As the cryogenic condition (-196 degrees C) is significantly lower than the temperature of main-chain segmental and micro-structure unit motion, the resin molecular segments are frozen, free volume fraction and resin toughness are reduced, thus the brittleness increases. These effects reduce the cryogenic failure strain of CFRP at break by 43.7% compared to room temperature, resulting in a smoother fracture surface morphology. Resin molecules under cryogenic condition have higher packing density, stronger intermolecular forces, which increase the strength and modulus of both resin and CFRP.

Abstract:The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of concrete depends on temperature, the internal structure of concrete, and the moisture content in concrete. An analytical model was developed to characterize the CTE of concrete under low temperatures. Three pore configurations are defined as pores with water and pores with ice. The effective strain of concrete is a combination of three processes during the cooling process, each containing a different configuration of pores. A general multiphase model for the effective expansion (and contraction) of concrete with a certain amount of ice was developed. The model can predict effective strain at different temperatures, which can reflect the influences of concrete pore size distribution and volume fractions of different phases. The predictions by the present model were compared with some available experimental data, and they agreed very well. (C) 2017 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:To study the strength increasing rule of LWSCC in the process of freezing construction, some specimens were placed in cryogenic boxes at different subzero temperatures for curing, and the others were used as a control group for standard curing. After standard curing for 28 days, the specimens were placed in cryogenic boxes at different subzero temperatures for 1 day, and then the specimens were subjected to quasi-static loading and split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) dynamic impact tests. Results showed that LWSCC had a stronger anti-freezing ability than the ordinary concrete and the strength growth was sensitive to the curing temperature. As the curing temperature decreased, the increasing rates of the compressive and tensile strengths became slow. The quasi-static and dynamic mechanical experiments showed that the strength of LWSCC was substantially enhanced when subjected to cryogenic temperatures after standard curing. Cryogenic LWSCC exhibited an obvious strain rate effect and impact resistance. A two-factor incremental model of the dynamic stress intensity factors and the dynamic constitutive equation of LWSCC in cryogenic temperatures were constructed. The conclusions obtained in the study provide a theoretical basis for the design of impact-resistant structures in cold areas.

Abstract:Mechanical properties at low temperature (-5°C, -20°C and -30°C) including compression strength, flexure strength, splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity of concrete with fly ash were investigated. In order to remain the temperature of the specimens unchanged during the test, a new insulation device was designed. In addition, the effects of curing ages on mechanical properties of concrete were studied. The results showed, at low temperature, all of the mechanical properties were improved; as the temperature decreases, the growth ratio increased continuously. The relative growth ratios of compression strength and flexure strength achieved the maximum value when the temperature decreased from -5°C to -20°C, and the relative growth ratios of splitting tensile strength and modulus of elasticity kept increasing during the whole process of cooling. At -35°C, all of the mechanical properties were improved at each curing age.

Abstract:Carbon fibre reinforced concrete (CFRC) is a new kind of composite material which is made by adding appropriate amount of shear carbon fibre into ordinary concrete. Compared with ordinary concrete, carbon fibre can better adapt to the harsh environment in cold regions and overcome adverse conditions. As a result, it can be widely used in infrastructure construction along the “Belt and Road” in China. In this paper, through analysing many experiments, charts, and theoretical analyses, the frost resistance, crack resistance, and compressive resistance of CFRC have been analyzed and introduced and verified its excellent performance of CFRC. On this basis, the feasibility of CFRC's application in cold regions is discussed. The results show that compared with ordinary materials, it is stronger in adapting to the harsh environment in the cold zone and has a broad development prospect and considerable potential in the future cold zone engineering construction.

Abstract:Concrete building structures in cold regions are frequently exposed to low-temperature environments and inevitably subjected to impact loads during service. This study aimed to investigate the water–ice phase transformation process of concrete at low temperature and its response to impact loads ranging from 20 °C to −30 °C, using nuclear magnetic resonance and a split Hopkinson pressure bar. Concrete mesoscopic model, with mortar, aggregates, interfacial transition zones (ITZs), and ice particles, was developed to carry out numerical simulation. Under impact loads, the dynamic compressive strength of concrete exhibited an exponential strain rate strengthening effect, with an average increase of 18% at −30 °C compared with 20 °C. Based on the T 2 spectrum, bound water in the concrete took up above 80% of the pore water, while 50% of the pore water remained unfrozen at −30 °C. The concrete was primarily damaged by compression, with a tensile damage rate of less than 10%. The damage of each phase material is sensitive to the strain rate, but not to the low-temperature. Numerical simulations of concrete mesoscopic models can be used to analyze the damage evolution and crack propagation mechanisms of concrete at low temperatures, providing a reference for understanding the dynamic failure mechanisms of composite materials.

Abstract:This study focuses on the influence of cryogenic temperature on the interface of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs). Results of interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (G(HC)) at -196 degrees C increased by 15.3% and 27.6% compared to the condition at room temperature (RT). By measuring the IFSS at -196 degrees C, a new experimental method was designed based on microbond test. The layer shear fracture morphologies of CFRP were observed by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. In order to study the interlaminar fracture mechanism, the interface and resin fracture hybrid model was built, and the shear-lag theory of interfacial toughness was adopted to analyze the energy release rate (G(dc)) of microbond. The results showed that the G(dc) value was increased by 11.5% from RT to -196 degrees C temperature. A higher G(HC) of CFRP was dominated by the higher IFSS and resin energy absorption at -196 degrees C.
Experimental study on compressive strength of concrete exposed to cryogenic temperature

Abstract:Through the low temperature splitting test on concrete given mix proportion,the change law of concrete tensile mechanical properties was investigated with different low temperature conditions.The results show that under different low temperature conditions,splitting tensile failure patterns of concrete cube specimens are similar;although low-temperature tensile strength of concrete has large discreteness,it basically experiences damage stage,rapid growth stage and steady fluctuation stage.The tensile strength of concrete reached a minimum value at about-10℃,and the tensile strength drops 5.7％ compared with that at normal temperature;at about-120℃,the tensile strength reaches the maximum value with the increase of 42.6％ compared with that at normal temperature.With the decrease of temperature,the ratio of tension and compression of concrete decreases,and the brittleness increases.According to the test results and the existing research results,the calculation formula of the relative tensile strength of concrete under low temperature can provide reference for engineering practice.

Abstract:The CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy (HEA) exhibits higher yield strength, ultimate strength and ductility at lower temperature. To further clarify the effect of the testing temperature on microstructure evolution, in-situ synchrotron-based high-energy X-ray diffraction tensile tests were carried out from 298 K down to 123 K. The enhanced yield strength of the alloy at cryogenic temperatures can be attributed to the greater lattice distortion prior to plastic deformation. Higher strain hardening rate leads to the simultaneously enhanced strength and ductility of the studied HEA below room temperature. Both dynamic Hall-Petch hardening (twinning) and dislocation hardening provide high work hardening capacity for this alloy during the plastic deformation at cryogenic temperatures. The increased dislocation density and nano-twins at cryogenic temperatures can be attributed to the decrease in the stacking fault energy as the deformation temperature decreases. These studies could provide an in-depth understanding for the strengthening mechanisms of the HEA in different temperature conditions and guide the exploration of HEAs with superb mechanical properties at cryogenic environments.

Abstract:Mechanical behaviors of UHTCC after freezing and thawing were investigated, and compared with those of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC), air-entrained concrete (AEC) and ordinary concrete (OC). Four point bending tests had been applied after different freezing-thawing cycles (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 and 300 cycles, respectively). The results showed that residual flexural strength of UHTCC after 300 freezing-thawing cycles was 10.62 MPa (70% of no freezing thawing ones), while 1.58 MPa (17% of no freezing thawing ones) for SFRC. Flexural toughness of UHTCC decreased by 17%, while 70% for SFRC comparatively. It has been demonstrated experimentally that UHTCC without any air-entraining agent could resist freezing-thawing and retain its high toughness characteristic in cold environment. Consequently, UHTCC could be put into practice for new-built or retrofit of infrastructures in cold regions.
