Abstract:Most nanothermite compositions utilise Al as a fuel, due to its low cost, high reactivity and availability. Nevertheless, aluminothermites exhibit high ignition temperature and low active metal content. In this paper, the combustion behaviour of Ti/CuO and Ti/CuO/NC systems is discussed. The compositions were prepared with a wet-mixing/sonication process followed by an electrospray technique and were examined in terms of their mechanical and radiation sensitivity, energetic parameters and morphology. The results exhibited a strong correlation between equivalence ratio and energetic parameters. The performed tests showed the crucial impact the addiction of the chosen energetic binder on the morphology and performance of the compositions. The results of our experiments indicate the occurrence of a different combustion mechanism than the one observed for Al-based nanothermites. In our case, the combustion mechanism involves a limitation by the diffusion of the oxidising agent and its decomposition products into the reactive fuel core.

Abstract:Nanothermite is a reactive system of nanoscale metal-based energetic materials, which is also known as metastable intermolecular composites (MICs). In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) as a new typical polymer semiconductor was firstly employed to replace GO as an additive in nanothermite. For solving the dispersity of g-C3N4 in nanothermite, a simple and novel sol-freeze-drying technology was firstly proposed to prepare Al/MFe2O4/g-C3N4 (M = Cu, Mg, Ni). The as-prepared Al/MFe2O4/g-C3N4 (M = Cu, Mg, Ni) nanothermites present a similar shape to the host container and have high dispersity, ultralight weight (0.035 g·cm−3) and large specific volume (28.19 cm3·g−1). The optimal PVP and g-C3N4 content were determined. Al/MFe2O4/g-C3N4 (M = Cu, Mg, Ni) all have superior combustion performance, lower electrostatic discharge sensitivity (EDS) and better catalytic performance on ammonium perchlorate (AP) and dihydroxy-lammonium 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50). g-C3N4 plays an important role in suppressing unstable combustion and is beneficial to reduce the electrostatic discharge sensitivity of MICs. This work demonstrates that PVP-mediated sol-freeze-drying technology is an effective approach for obtaining g-C3N4-based nanothermite with high dispersity and ultralight characteristic.

Abstract:Efficient energy release and the large-scale preparation of thermite with high energy density are currently crucial issues in the field of explosive systems. In this study, we focused on the utilization of porous metal oxides (pM x O y ) prepared through urea co-precipitation and high-temperature annealing to enhance the ignition and combustion performance of nanothermites. We compared the thermochemical reactivity, ignition, and combustion performance of nAl/pM x O y with those of nanothermites composed of nano metal oxides. We found that the use of pM x O y resulted in significantly increased the reaction exergy and reduced the activation energy of nanothermites, the energy released by the nanothermite containing pM x O y increased by up to 33.4%, while the activation energy decreased by up to 34.8%. Furthermore, the ignition and combustion results show that better semiconductor bridge ignition, pressurization, and combustion performance of nanothermites consisting of high free oxygen ratio and high porosity pM x O y . This improvement can be attributed to the enhanced contact between nAl and pM x O y , as well as the improved oxygen ionic conductivity of pM x O y . We believe that this high-performance nanothermite, which utilizes porous metal oxides exhibiting high interfacial activity, can be extensively employed in various initiating explosive devices. Notably, the simplicity of the batched preparation process further enhances its potential for practical application.

Abstract:Surface engineering of energetic particles can offer significant applications; the emergence of surface modification with polydopamine (PDA) can propose novel material science. Even though, nanothermites (metal oxide/metal) can offer surplus heat output; the reaction rate is comparatively-low as it is limited to the interplaner distance between particles. Intimate mixing between metal oxide/metal could be accomplished via surface modification. This study reports on the facile synthesis of MnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) of 5 nm average particle size. On the other hand, Al NPs in the shape of plates of 100 nm particle size were employed. Surface modification of Al NPs with PDA was conducted via in situ polymerization. Colloidal MnO2 NPs integrated into PDA/Al during the polymerization process. DPA layer was effectively-deposited on the aluminium surface and effectively-anchored MnO2 NPs. SEM micrographs of developed MnO2/PDA/Al nanocomposite demonstrated the successful bonding of MnO2 to Al surface via strong PDA chemical bonding. From FTIR spectra, the sharp peaks at 1544 cm−1 and 1389 cm−1 attributed to the C=O and C–O bonds, respectively, and could be due to bond formation between Mn and oxygen in C=O, and C–O in PDA. The developed MnO2/PDA/Al demonstrated the uniform distribution of MnO2 NPs on Al nano-plates. This work dropped the light toward the green production of novel nanothermite hybrid with durable chemical bonding. MnO2/PDA/Al hybrid can offer superior combustion characteristics with intimate mixing between the oxidizer and metal fuel to the molecular level.

Abstract:One of the groups of pyrotechnic compositions is thermite compositions, so-called thermites, which consist of an oxidant, usually in the form of a metal oxide or salt, and a free metal, which is the fuel. A characteristic feature of termite combustion reactions, apart from their extremely high exothermicity, is that they proceed, for the most part, in liquid and solid phases. Nanothermites are compositions, which include at least one component whose particles size is on the order of nanometers. The properties of nanothermites, such as high linear burning velocities, high reaction heats, high sensitivity to stimuli, low ignition temperature, ability to create hybrid compositions with other high-energy materials allow for a wide range of applications. Among the applications of nanothermites, one should mention igniters, detonators, microdetonators, micromotors, detectors, elements of detonation chain or elements allowing self-destruction of systems (e.g., microchips). The aim of this work is to discuss the preparation methods, research methods, direction of the future development, eventual challenges or problems and to highlight the applications and emerging novel avenues of use of these compositions.

Abstract:The objective of this study is to enhance the mixing uniformity and contact efficiency between nano-Al and oxidizers through structural control, while suppressing the "pre – ignition fusion" effect of nanothermites. We employed biotemplate approach, utilizing Lycopodium japonicum Thunb. spores (LP) and Papilio maackii wings (PW) as sacrificial templates, to successfully fabricate hierarchically structured Al/PW-CuO and Al/LP-CuO nanothermites. At a stoichiometric ratio of Ф = 1.5, Al/PW-CuO exhibited the highest heat release of 2278.00 J/g, whereas Al/LP-CuO also achieved a substantial heat release of 1969.08 J/g. These outstanding performances are attributed to the unique structures of PW-CuO and LP-CuO, especially the spine-like plate structure of PW-CuO, which provides more reaction sites, thereby enhancing spatial utilization and heat release efficiency. This study provides new insights for the design and application of highly active nanoenergetic materials.

Abstract:To improve the pressure output ability of nanothermites to meet the needs in many fields, with the more volatile advantage of metal fluoride products (AlF3), this paper proposes the scheme of nanothermites (Al/CuF2). The energy release process of Al/CuF2 with different equivalent ratios under slow and fast heating rates has been studied. Under the slow heating rates, it was found that the equivalent ratio (Φ) has a significant influence on the energy release process. When Φ ≤ 1, the product is dominated by Cu. With the increase of the equivalent ratio, Al2Cu gradually appeared in the product, indicating that the increase of Al powder contributed to the enhancement of the alloy reaction. On the other hand, to further investigate the actual application of the Al/CuF2 mixture, combustion experiments in a closed container and in open air were carried out and compared with those of Al/CuO. In accordance with our design concept, AlCuF2 shows more excellent gas release ability. Al/CuF2 (Φ = 3) has the most excellent pressure output capacity (2.67 MPa), which increases by 107% compared to 1.29 MPa (Al/CuO). In addition, Al/CuF2 displays more excellent ignition performances in terms of shorter delay time and less ignition energy. Therefore, Al/CuF2 composite particles, as a novel nanothermite design, are expected to be widely used in the gas generator, micropropulsion, and other military and civilian fields.

Abstract:Metal/oxide-based nanothermite is a kind of metastable intermolecular composites (MICs) whose application performance can be adjusted purposefully by varying properties of oxidizers. Herein, four new MCo2O4/GO/Al (M = Cu, Mg, Zn, Ni) nanothermites were prepared in this work, in which the bimetallic composite oxides of spinel MCo2O4 were employed to replace single metal oxides as oxidizer. The positively charged MCo2O4 and Al nanoparticles were successfully self-assembled by the encapsulation of negatively charged GO. MCo2O4/GO/Al nanothermites present a dense layer stacked structure and uniform distribution, with a favorable interfacial contact between the bimetallic oxide and fuel at the nanoscale. MCo2O4/GO/Al nanothermites release higher energy of about 2500–3400 J g−1, much higher than that of corresponding thermite with single metal oxide. CuCo2O4/GO(2.5 wt%)/Al has the shortest pressure rise time (27.18 ms), largest energy output (3422 J g−1) and peak pressure (6.03 MPa), exhibiting a more violent combustion reaction and higher reactivity. The introduction of GO significantly improves the safety, and the electrostatic discharge sensitivity (EDS) of CuCo2O4/GO(5 wt%)/Al can reach 0.56 mJ, largely higher than that of CuCo2O4/Al without GO (0.04 mJ). MCo2O4/GO/Al nanothermites also have different catalytic performances on energetic components of cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX), ammonium perchlorate (AP) and dihydroxy-lammonium 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (TKX-50), indicating the selectivity of catalyst. This study proves that spinel MCo2O4 is a superior oxidizer for Al-based nanothermite system.

Abstract:To improve the thermal and combustion properties of nanothermites, a design theory of changing the state of matter and structural state of the reactants during reaction was proposed. The Al/MoO 3 /KClO 4 (Kp) nanothermite was prepared and the Al/MoO 3 nanothermite was used as a control. SEM and XRD were used to characterize the nanothermites; DSC was used to test thermal properties; and constant volume and open combustion tests were performed to examine their combustion performance. Phase and morphology characterization of the combustion products were performed to reveal the mechanism of the aluminothermic reaction. The results show that the Al/MoO 3 /Kp nanothermite exhibited excellent thermal properties, with a total heat release of 1976 J·g − 1 , increasing by approximately 33% of 1486 J·g − 1 of the Al/MoO 3 nanothermite, and activation energy of 269.66 kJ·mol − 1 , which demonstrated higher stability than the Al/MoO 3 nanothermite (205.64 kJ·mol − 1 ). During the combustion test, the peak pressure of the Al/MoO 3 /Kp nanothermite was 0.751 MPa, and the average pressure rise rate was 25.03 MPa·s − 1 , much higher than 0.188 MPa and 6.27 MPa·s − 1 of the Al/MoO 3 nanothermite. The combustion products of Al/MoO 3 nanothermite were Al 2 O 3 , MoO, and Mo, indicating insufficient combustion and incomplete reaction, whereas, the combustion products of Al/MoO 3 /Kp nanothermite were Al 2 O 3 , MoO, and KCl, indicating complete reaction. Their "coral-like" morphology was the effect of reactants solidifying after melting during the combustion process. The characterization of reactants and pressure test during combustion reveals the three stages of aluminothermic reaction in thermites. The excellent thermal and combustion performance of Al/MoO 3 /Kp nanothermite is attributed to the melt and decomposition of Kp into O 2 in the third stage. This study provides new ideas and guidance for the design of high-performance nanothermites.

Abstract:The performances of nanothermites largely rely on a meticulous design of nanoarchitectures and the close assembly of components. Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) NiO/Al nanothermite film has been successfully fabricated by integrating colloidal crystal template (CCT) method and controllable magnetron sputtering. The as-prepared NiO/Al film shows uniform structure and homogeneous dispersity, with greatly improved interfacial contact between fuel and oxidizer at the nanoscale. The total heat output of 3DOM NiO/Al nanothermite has reached 2462.27J·g−1 at optimal the deposition time of 20min, which is significantly more than the values of other NiO/Al structural systems that have been reported before. Intrinsic reduced ignition temperature (onset temperature) and less gas production render the wide applications of 3DOM NiO/Al nanothermite. Moreover, this design strategy can also be readily generalized to realize diverse 3DOM structured nanothermites.

Abstract:Nanothermites have a wide application in many civil and defense applications, including propulsion and detonations systems, micro-electromechanical (MEMs) and other systems that require fast energy release rate and low ignition temperature. Since traditional ignition methods are commonly based on surface excitation (spot ignition), possessing a risk of undesired ignition, safe and selective microwave (MW)-based igniting systems can interact with an ignitable material (typically a thermite) over its full volume at once . Unfortunately, thermites have low susceptibility to MW due to the presence of Al 2 O 3 oxide shell on Al particles, which would commonly require a high ignition power of MW radiation and long ignition delay times. In this work, Ti 3 C 2 MXene was introduced as a MW susceptor into Al/CuO energetic nanocomposite. The samples were ignited using a MW probe, showing that the introduction of MXene into Al/CuO/MXene could significantly reduce a power required for its MW ignition, as well as shorten the ignition delay time versus the parent Al/CuO nanothermite. Presence of MXene could modulate and control a heat release, gas production and combustion performance of the Al/CuO/MXene composites, substantially extending safety, flexibility and adaptability of new nanothermites to various operational requirements.
Pushing the Limits of Energy Performance in Micron-Sized Thermite: Core–Shell Assembled Liquid Metal-Modified Al@Fe2O3 Thermites

Abstract:Thermites are a class of significant energetic materials widely used in aerospace propulsion, explosion, pyrotechnics, thermal batteries, and power generation. Although nanothermites exhibit fast reaction rates and high energy density, micron-sized thermites remain of practical importance over nanothermites due to their low electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitivity, lower cost, and smaller dead mass. Herein, we develop micron-sized core-shell gallium-based liquid metal-modified Al@Fe2O3 (GLM-Al@Fe2O3), which exhibits high energy density and low laser ignition energy. At an equivalence ratio of 1.3, the differential scanning calorimetry results show that the total heat release of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 reaches 2555 J.g(-1), which is much higher than that of the control sample (1424 J.g(-1)) prepared by a similar process. The density of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 (f = 1.3) was characterized by a gas pycnometer analyzer, and its volumetric energy density could reach 9.96 kJ.cm(-3). Laser-ignited combustion performance of GLMAl@Fe2O3 was markedly reinforced in terms of the decreased ignition energy. Additionally, the ESD ignition threshold of GLM-Al@Fe2O3 is higher than 1 J, which revealed that the as-prepared GLM-Al@Fe(2)O(3)was insensitive to electrostatic discharge. The facile and efficient strategy in this work provides inspiration to enhance the energy output performance and maintain the ESD safety of micron-sized thermites, which could show great potential in various civilian and military applications.
A novel nano-thermite system with BiOF as fluorine-containing oxidant for enhanced energy release performance

Abstract:The reduced diffusion distance of nano-thermite results in an exceptionally high energy release rate and intense exothermic reactions upon ignition, which has drawn significant interest from researchers in the field of energetic materials. With the deepening of research, metal fluorides are gradually favored by researchers because of their unique reaction characteristics. This paper presents the synthesis of a new fluorine-containing oxidant, BiOF, and its use in the preparation of a novel nano-thermite with n-Al. BiOF crystals exhibit a unique microscopic morphology and are interlaced into "nanoflower" microspheres, which allows for good interfacial contact between the oxidant and fuel during the recombination process. The resulting n-Al/BiOF system displays excellent ignition and combustion performance, with a combustion temperature higher than the boiling point of its main combustion products, AlF 3 and Bi. Compared with n-Al/CuO and n-Al/MoO 3 systems, n-Al/BiOF exhibits a higher flame propagation rate under confinement. In addition, the ignition threshold of the n-Al/BiOF system is also smaller than that of the n-Al/CuO and n-Al/MoO 3 systems. Furthermore, the paper examines the reaction mechanism of the n-Al/BiOF system through thermal reaction path analysis and combustion and thermal analysis product characterization. The paper discovers a "pre-ignition" reaction mechanism before the ignition temperature, where the strongly electronegative fluorine in BiOF corrodes the Al 2 O 3 shell, promoting the release of aluminum energy. The synergistic and effective interaction between oxygen, fluorine, and fuel aluminum in the n-Al/BiOF system results in efficient energy release performance, making BiOF a promising candidate for n-Al based reactive materials in propellants, explosives, and pyrotechnic products.

Combustion Characteristics of Physically Mixed 40 nm Aluminum/Copper Oxide Nanothermites Using Laser Ignition

Abstract:This paper reports on the ignition and flame propagation characteristics of aluminum/copper oxide (Al/CuO) nanothermite at different packing density, manufactured from 40 nm commercial Al and CuO nanopowders. A 3.5 W continuous wave laser was used to ignite the samples in argon at atmospheric pressure, and a high speed camera captured the flame propagation. The high speed images revealed that the fast laser heating creates significant material ablation, followed by heat transfer along the heated surface. The bulk ignition occurs near the edge of the top surface, followed by the self-sustained burning. Lightly pressed powders (90% porosity) ignited in ~0.1 ms and the burning front propagated at around 200 m/s, while the dense pellets (40-60% porosity) ignited in ~1 ms and the burning front propagated at around 10 m/s. These results indicate that the reaction mechanism changes from mass convection to heat diffusion with increasing the packing density. The ignition and burn speeds of these Al/CuO nanothermites at different equivalence ratios (ERs), along with SEM images of pre- and post-combustion, illustrate that the homogeneity of the mixture is a critical parameter for optimizing the performance. The Al rich mixtures show significantly lower ignition delays and higher burn speeds.

Abstract:A study of the combustion processes of Ti/CuO and Ti/CuO/NC nanothermites prepared via electrospraying was conducted in this work. For this purpose, the compositions were thermally conditioned at 350, 550 and 750 ∘C, as selected based on our initial differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetry (DSC/TG) investigations. The tested compositions were analysed for chemical composition and morphology using SEM-EDS, Raman spectroscopy and XRD measurements. Additionally, the thermal behaviour and decomposition kinetics of compositions were explored by means of DSC/TG. The Kissinger and Ozawa methods were applied to the DSC curves to calculate the reaction activation energy. SEM-EDS analyses indicated that sintering accelerated with increasing equivalence ratio and there was a strong effect on the sintering process due to cellulose nitrate (NC) addition. The main combustion reaction was found to start at 420–450 ∘C, as confirmed by XRD and Raman study of samples annealed at 350 ∘C and 550 ∘C. Moreover, increasing the fuel content in the composition led to lower Ea, higher reaction heats and a more violent combustion process. Conversely, the addition of NC had an ambiguous effect on Ea. Finally, a multi-step combustion mechanism was proposed and is to some extent in line with the more general reactive sintering (RS) mechanism. However, unusual mass transfer was observed, i.e. to the fuel core, rather than the opposite, which is typically observed for Al-based nanothermites.

Abstract:Nanothermite composites containing metallic fuel and inorganic oxidizer are gaining importance due to their outstanding combustion characteristics. In this paper, the combustion behaviors of copper oxide/aluminum nanothermites are discussed. CuO nanorods were synthesized using the surfactant-templating method, then mixed or self-assembled with Al nanoparticles. This nanoscale mixing resulted in a large interfacial contact area between fuel and oxidizer. As a result, the reaction of the low density nanothermite composite leads to a fast propagating combustion, generating shock waves with Mach numbers up to 3.

Abstract:Thermite has become a hot research topic in the field of energetic materials in recent years due to its high combustion efficiency and fast energy release rate. However, during its preparation process, agglomeration between components is prone to occur, which seriously affects its reaction performance. In order to change the contact mode between raw materials and improve the agglomeration phenomenon of nano-thermite components, Al/Fe 2 O 3 was prepared by the sol–gel method and compared with samples prepared by the mechanical ball milling method with characterization and experiments. In an effort to analyze the effects of preparation methods on the morphology characteristics and thermodynamic properties of the samples, the samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, and DSC. Meanwhile, combustion tests were used to investigate the combustion characteristics of samples. The results show that compared with mechanical ball milling method, the samples prepared by the sol–gel method are more evenly distributed and the activation energy of the first stage is lower. In addition, the combustion process of the samples prepared by the sol gel method is more uniform and stable, with higher peak combustion pressure and pressurization rate of constant volume combustion. However, due to the incomplete conversion of Fe (NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O during the preparation process, the combustion temperature is lower. The research results could provide valuable references for the modification and formulation design of thermites.

Abstract:Nano‐thermite has become a subject of significant interest in the composite energetic materials field due to its high energy release rate. To cater to diverse engineering needs, thermite formulations are often customized to fulfill specific criteria. This study investigates the potential of metal nickel (Ni) as an additive to modify nano‐thermite formulations, selected for its optimal calorific values and chemical reactivity. The base materials, nano‐aluminum (Al) and iron oxide (Fe2O3), are blended with varying mass ratios of Ni (1 %, 3 %, 5 %, 7 %, 9 %) using the wet ball milling method. Pre‐reaction and post‐reaction morphological and compositional alterations in the resultant thermite samples are scrutinized through SEM and XRD characterization tests. Moreover, DSC analysis and combustion experiments were conducted to examine the pyrolysis and combustion behaviors of the evaluated samples. The results reveal a reduced exothermic peak on the DSC curves with the introduction of Ni, making the liquid‐solid (L‐S) phase reaction more challenging compared to the Al/Fe2O3 thermite. Intriguingly, Ni addition progressively decreases the combustion temperature of thermites as the Ni's mass ratio increases, with a peak efficiency at 7 % in the perforation tests on stainless‐steel plates. This research further reveals that the thermite reaction mechanism is a combined consequence of the "pre‐ignition‐fusion" and "fusion‐diffusion" mechanisms. These insights can provide valuable guidance for designing thermite formulations for potential applications in storage, management, and pyrotechnic cutting areas.

Abstract:Nanothermites are attracting much attention because of the high energy density, self-sustained exothermic reaction, and high combustion temperature. However, they suffer from sintering and incomplete combustion, leading to poor reactivity and low energy utilization efficiency. In order to enhance the energy output and combustion performance of nanothermites, ammonium perchlorate (AP) was introduced into the Al/CuO nanothermites. The nanothermites with varied content of AP were prepared by electrospray. The morphological characterization of the nanothermites confirms that the nanoparticles are homogeneously mixed without agglomeration. Heat release, specific impulse, and peak pressure of gaseous products exhibit remarkable enhancement with increasing AP content. Specifically, the nanothermites with 7.5 wt % AP produce specific impulse and heat energy of ∼2.7 and ∼1.4 times higher than those of Al/CuO-based nanothermites without AP. Abstract:This work investigates the reaction dynamics of metastable intermolecular composites through high speed spectrometry, pressure measurements, and high-speed color camera pyrometry. Eight mixtures including Al/CuO and Al/Fe2O3/xWO3 (x being the oxidizer mol. %) were reacted in a constant volume pressure cell as a means of tuning gas release and adiabatic temperature. A direct correlation between gas release, peak pressure, and pressurization rate was observed, but it did not correlate with temperature. When WO3 was varied as part of the stoichiometric oxidizer content, it was found that Al/Fe2O3/70% WO3 achieved the highest pressures and shortest burn time despite a fairly constant temperature between mixtures, suggesting an interplay between the endothermic Fe2O3 decomposition and the higher adiabatic flame temperature sustained by the Al/WO3 reaction in the composite. It is proposed that the lower ignition temperature of Al/WO3 leads to the initiation of the composite and its higher flame temperature enhances the gasification of Fe2O3, thus improving advection and propagation as part of a feedback loop that drives the reaction. Direct evidence of such gas release promoting reactivity was obtained through high speed pyrometry videos of the reaction. These results set the stage for nanoenergetic materials that can be tuned for specific applications through carefully chosen oxidizer mixtures.
