Abstract:Thermal expansion and magnetostriction are directional dependent thermodynamic quantities. For the characterization of novel quantum phases of matter it is required to study materials under multi-extreme conditions, in particular down to very low temperatures, in very high magnetic fields, as well as under high pressure. We developed a miniaturized capacitive dilatometer suitable for temperatures down to 20 mK and usage in high magnetic fields, which exerts a large spring force between 40 to 75 N on the sample. This corresponds to a uniaxial stress up to 3 kbar for a sample with cross-section of (0.5~mm)$^2$. We describe the design and performance test of the dilatometer which resolves length changes with high resolution of $0.02 \mathrmÅ$ at low temperatures. The miniaturized device can be utilized in any standard cryostat, including dilution refrigerators or the commercial physical property measurement system.

New applications for the world's smallest high-precision capacitance dilatometer and its stress-implementing counterpart

Abstract:We introduce a new stress dilatometer with exactly the same size and mass as the world's smallest miniature capacitance dilatometer (height × width × depth = 15 × 14 × 15 mm3, mass: 12 g). To develop this new device, only a single part of the most recently developed mini-dilatometer, the so-called "body," needs to be replaced. Therefore, the new mini-dilatometer with an interchangeable body can be used for high-resolution measurements of thermal expansion and magnetostriction with and without large stress. We also report two novel applications of both mini-dilatometer cell types. Our new setup was installed for the first time in a cryogen-free system (PPMS DynaCool). The first new setup allows the rotation of both dilatometers in situ at any angle between -90° ≥ μ ≥ +90° in the temperature range from 320 to 1.8 K. We also installed our mini-cells in a dilution refrigerator insert of a PPMS DynaCool, in which dilatometric measurements are now possible in the temperature range from 4 to 0.06 K. Because of the limited sample space, such measurements could not be performed so far. For both new applications, we can resolve the impressive length changes to 0.01 Å.

Abstract:Capacitive dilatometers that could be installed in a Quantum Design Physical Properties Measurements System (PPMS) were developed. Two types of dilatometers were constructed. One dilatometer was compact enough to be installed in small magnet bore of various cryostats and had a reference capacitor so that high sensitivity and stability were achieved. The other dilatometer with a movable capacitor supported by a flat spring enabled to measure large strain and exchange samples easily. We measured the thermal expansion and magnetostriction of single crystalline clathrate compound Pr3Pd20Ge6 and polycrystalline hydrogenated La(Fe0.88Si0.12)13 in the temperature range between 2 and 340 K and magnetic field up to 8 T. The dilatometers allowed to detect the strain responses with a sensitivity of 10 ppb. We could measure strain from 10−8 to 10−3 using two dilatometers.

Abstract:An instrument has been constructed to measure a large range of magnetostriction and thermal expansion between room temperature and 4 K in a superconductive split-coil magnet, that allows investigation in magnetic fields up to 12 T. The very small bulk samples (up to 1 mm in size) as well as big ones (up to 13 mm) of the irregular form can be measured. The possibility of magnetostriction investigation in thin films is shown. A general account is given of both electrical and the mechanical aspects of the design of capacitance cell and their associated electronic circuitry. A simple lever device is proposed to increase the sensitivity twice. The resulting obtained sensitivity can be 0.5 Angstrom. The performance of the technique is illustrated by some preliminary measurements of the magnetostriction of superconducting MgB2, thermal expansion of (La0.8Ba0.2)0.93MnO3 single crystal and magnetoelastic behavior of the Ni/Si(111) and La0.7Sr0.3CoO3/SAT0.7CAT0.1LA0.2(001) cantilevers.

Abstract:Thermal expansion and magnetostriction, the strain responses of a material to temperature and a magnetic field, especially properties at low temperature, are extremely useful to study electronic and phononic properties, phase transitions, quantum criticality, and other interesting phenomena in cryogenic engineering and materials science. However, traditional dilatometers cannot provide magnetic field and ultra-low temperature (<77 K) environment easily. This paper describes the design and test results of thermal expansion and magnetostriction at cryogenic temperature using the strain gauge method based on a Physical Properties Measurements System (PPMS). The interfacing software and automation were developed using LabVIEW. The sample temperature range can be tuned continuously between 1.8 and 400 K. With this PPMS-aided measuring system, we can observe temperature and magnetic field dependence of the linear thermal expansion of different solid materials easily and accurately.
A High Resolution Dilatometer Using Optical Fiber Interferometer

Abstract:We introduce a high performance differential dilatometer based on an all-fiber Michelson interferometer at cryogenic temperature with $10^{-10}$ resolution in $\delta L/L$. It resolve the linear thermal expansion coefficient by measuring the oscillating changes of sample thickness and sample temperature with the interferometer and in-situ thermometer, respectively. By measuring the linear thermal expansion coefficient $\alpha$ near the antiferromagnetic transition region of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ as a demonstration, we show our dilatometer is able to measure thin samples with sub-pm-level length change resolution and mK-level temperature resolution. Despite there is residual background thermal expansion of a few nm/K in measurement result, our new dilatometer is sitll a powerful tool for study of phase transition in condensed matter physics, especially significant advantages in fragile materials with sub-100$\mu$m thickness and being integrated with multiple synchronous measurements and tuning thanks to the extremely high resolution and contactless nature. The prototype design of this setup can be further improved in many aspects for specific applications.

Abstract:We present high resolution thermal expansion measurement data obtained with high relative sensitivity of $\Delta$L$/$L = 10$^{-9}$ and accuracy of $\pm$2$\%$ using closed cycle refrigerators employing two different dilatometers. The data quality is in excellent agreement with those obtained using wet liquid helium based systems, demonstrating great technological possibilities for future thermal expansion measurements in view of the depleting resource of liquid helium. The cryogenic environment was achieved using two different cryostats that use pulse tube and Gifford-Mcmahon coolers as the cryocoolers. Both the dilatometers employ a spring movement for achieving the parallel movement of the capacitor plates. $Dilatometer \#1$ was built in-house based on a published design while $dilatometer \#2$ was obtained commercially. Cell calibration for $dilatometer \#1$ was done using copper and minimal deviation of the cell effect from the published values were found. Linear thermal expansion coefficient $\alpha$ obtained using both dilatometers was evaluated using two different techniques, namely, numerical differentiation and derivative of a polynomial fit. The resultant $\alpha$ obtained for metals silver and aluminium showed excellent match with published values obtained on systems using wet cryostats. Finite element method simulations were performed for understanding the spring movement in each dilatometer using which the effect of different forces$/$pressures on the displacement of the spring was studied. Finally, we report thermal expansion measurements done on single crystals of two high temperature superconductors YBa$_2$Cu$_{3-x}$Al$_x$O$_{6+\delta}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ along the c-axis and found very good match with published data obtained using wet liquid helium based cryostats.

Abstract:We demonstrate a dynamic scanning capacitance microscope (DSCM) that operates at large bandwidths, cryogenic temperatures and high magnetic fields. The setup is based on a non-contact atomic force microscope (AFM) with a quartz tuning fork sensor with non-optical excitation and read-out for topography, force and dissipation measurements. The metallic AFM tip forms part of an rf resonator with a transmission characteristics modulated by the sample properties and the tip-sample capacitance. The tip motion gives rise to a modulation of the capacitance at the frequency of the AFM sensor and its harmonics, which can be recorded simultaneously with the AFM data. We use an intuitive model to describe and analyze the resonator transmission and show that for most experimental conditions it is proportional to the complex tip-sample conductance, which depends on both the tip-sample capacitance and the sample resistivity. We demonstrate the performance of the DSCM on metal disks buried under a polymer layer and we discuss images recorded on a two-dimensional electron gas in the quantum Hall effect regime, i.e. at cryogenic temperatures and high magnetic fields, where we directly image the formation of compressible stripes at the physical edge of the sample.

Abstract:A novel scanning near‐field optical dilatometer is presented, which is contactless and capable of generating maps of both positive and negative thermal expansion coefficients of 2D materials and nanostructured thin‐films at the nanoscale. This dilatometer is based on super‐resolution scanning near‐field optical microscopy (SNOM) and, therefore, has resolution well beyond the diffraction limit of light, even if it is all‐optical in nature. To date, there are very few experimental techniques, if any, that are suitable for the purpose of acquiring quantitative maps of the thermal expansivity of 2D materials and nanostructured thin films with nanoscale lateral resolution in spite of huge demand for nanoscale thermal management, for example in designing integrated circuitry for power electronics. Besides, contactless analytical tools for determining the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) are highly desirable because probes in contact with the sample significantly perturb any thermal measurements. Here, ω‐2ω near‐field thermoreflectance imaging is presented as a novel, all‐optical, and contactless technique to map the TEC at the nanoscale with precision. Testing of this technique is performed on nanogranular films of gold and multilayer graphene (ML‐G) platelets. With ω‐2ω near‐field thermoreflectance, it is demonstrated that the TEC of Au is higher at the metal‐insulator interface, with an average of (17.12 ± 2.30) ×10−6 K−1 in agreement with macroscopic techniques. For ML‐G, the average TEC is (−5.77 ± 3.79) x10−6 K−1 and is assigned to in‐plane vibrational bending modes. A vibrational‐thermal transition from graphene to graphite is observed, where the TEC becomes positive as the ML thickness increases. The nanoscale method here reported demonstrates results in excellent agreement with its macroscopic counterparts, as well as superior capabilities to probe 2D materials and interfaces.

Abstract:Thermal expansion offers deep insights into phase transitions in condensed-matter physics. Utilizing an advanced ac temperature dilatometer with picometer resolution, this study clearly resolves the antiferromagnetic and structural transition in BaFe2As2 . The implementation of temperature oscillation reveals a hysteresis near the transition temperature, TN , with unprecedented resolution. Unexpectedly, we find that the hysteretic width exhibits a universal dependence on the parameters of temperature oscillation and the sample's longitudinal dimension, which, in turn, reveals a finite transition speed. Our quantitative analysis shows that this phase boundary propagates at a mere 188 μm/ s—a speed 7 orders of magnitude slower than acoustic waves. It suggests a hidden thermodynamic constraint imposed by the electronic degrees of freedom. Our research not only sheds light on the dynamics of phase transitions between different correlated phases, but also establishes high-precision dilatometry as a powerful tool for material studies. Compact computer controlled biaxial tensile device for low-temperature transport measurements of layered materials

Abstract:Biaxial tensile device for transport study of layered materials is described. The device is mounted on the standard 24 pin zero force connector and can be moved between various setups. Compact design of the device makes it suitable for a wide range of studies. In our case, it is placed inside a 50 mm diameter chamber in closed-circle refrigerator and is used in the temperature range 9 K - 310 K. A sample is glued in the center of a polyimide cruciform substrate, the ends of which are connected to a tension system driven by four computer-controlled stepper motors providing tensile force up to 30 N. Computer simulation results and their experimental verification show that tensile strain along one axis depends on the tensile load along perpendicular direction, and this dependence turns out to be relatively strong and exceeds 40%. The operation of the device is demonstrated by studying the effect of deformation on the electrical conductivity of a layered compound 2H-NbS2.

A universal platform for magnetostriction measurements in thin films

Abstract:We present a universal nanomechanical sensing platform for the investigation of magnetostriction in thin films. It is based on a doubly-clamped silicon nitride nanobeam resonator covered with a thin magnetostrictive film. Changing the magnetization direction within the film plane by an applied magnetic field generates a magnetostrictive stress and thus changes the resonance frequency of the nanobeam. A measurement of the resulting resonance frequency shift, e.g. by optical interferometry, allows to quantitatively determine the magnetostriction constants of the thin film. We use this method to determine the magnetostriction constants of a 10nm thick polycrystalline cobalt film, showing very good agreement with literature values. The presented technique can be useful in particular for the precise measurement of magnetostriction in a variety of (conducting and insulating) thin films, which can be deposited by e.g. electron beam deposition, thermal evaporation or sputtering.

Abstract:We present a high resolution method for measuring magnetostriction in millisecond pulsed magnetic fields at cryogenic temperatures with a sensitivity of $1.11\times10^{-11}/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$. The sample is bonded to a thin piezoelectric plate, such that when the sample's length changes, it strains the piezoelectric and induces a voltage change. This method is more sensitive than a fiber-Bragg grating method. It measures two axes simultaneously instead of one. The gauge is small and versatile, functioning in DC and millisecond pulsed magnetic fields. We demonstrate its use by measuring the magnetostriction of Ca$_3$Co$_{1.03}$Mn$_{0.97}$O$_6$ single crystals in pulsed magnetic fields. By comparing our data to new and previously published results from a fiber-Bragg grating magnetostriction setup, we confirm that this method detects magnetostriction effects. We also demonstrate the small size and versatility of this technique by measuring angle dependence with respect to the applied magnetic field in a rotator probe in 65 T millisecond pulsed magnetic fields.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates an optical technique to measure magnetostrictive strain in a cryogenic environment using a Fabry–Pérot resonator spaced by crystal samples. Optical measurement techniques are calibration-free and highly sensitive. This technique was used to measure the magnetostrictive strain of neodymium gallate at a temperature of 49 mK to be λ = 1.3 × 10−5 at 3 T, with a sensitivity of 3.0 × 10−8. We highlight the interesting properties of the crystal’s magnetic ordering. The sensitivity of this technique was limited by the wavemeter used to measure the laser frequency, and significant improvements in the sensitivity should be possible.

A compact ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope with dilution refrigeration

Abstract:We have designed and built a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) setup for operation at millikelvin temperatures in ultra high vacuum. A compact cryostat with an integrated dilution refrigerator has been built, that allows measurements at a base temperature of 25 mK in magnetic field up to 7.5 T with low mechanical and electronic noise. The cryostat is not larger than conventional helium bath cryostats (23 and 13 liters of nitrogen and helium respectively), so that the setup does not require a large experimental hall and fits easily into a standard lab space. Mechanical vibrations with running dilution circulation were kept below 300 fm/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ by mechanically decoupling the STM from the cryostat and the pumping system. All electronic input lines were low-pass filtered, reducing the electronic temperature to below 100 mK, as deduced from the quasiparticle peaks of superconducting aluminium. The microscope is optically accessible in the parked position, making sample and tip exchange fast and user-friendly. For measurement the STM is lowered 60 mm down so that the sample ends in the middle of a wet superconducting magnetic coil.

Abstract:We report on the development of a capacitance measuring system which allows measurements of capacitance in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61~T. By using this system, magnetic-field responses of various physical quantities such magnetostriction, magnetic-field-induced change in complex dielectric constant, and magneto-caloric effect can be investigated in pulsed-magnetic-field conditions. Here, we examine the validity of our system for investigations of these magnetic-field-induced phenomena in pulse magnets. For the magnetostriction measurement, magnetostriction of a specimen can be measured through a change in the capacitance between two aligned electrodes glued on the specimen and a dilatometer. We demonstrate a precise detection of valley polarization in semimetallic bismuth through a magnetostriction signal with a resolution better than 10$^{-6}$ of the relative length change. For the magnetic-field-induced change in complex dielectric constant, we successfully observed clear dielectric anomalies accompanied by magnetic/magnetoelectric phase transitions in multiferroic Pb(TiO)Cu$_4$(PO$_4$)$_4$. For the measurement of magneto-caloric effect, a magnetic-field-induced change in sample temperature was verified for Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ with a capacitance thermometer made of a non-magnetic ferroelectric compound KTa$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$ ($x$ = 0.02) whose capacitance is nearly field-independent. These results show that our capacitance measuring system is a promising tool to study various magnetic-field-induced phenomena which have been difficult to detect in pulsed magnetic fields.

Abstract:A conduction calorimeter where the sample is pressed between two identical heat fluxmeters, each having 50 chromel–constantan thermocouples, is described. The fluxmeters were built to obtain linear heat conduction and with enough rigidity to apply a controlled uniaxial stress on the sample. The method of measurement, together with the fact that the sensors themselves apply the stress to the sample, allow us to obtain absolute values of the specific heat. The specific heat of strontium titanate ferroelastic crystal is measured without stress and under an applied uniaxial stress on the face (110). The measurements were carried out while cooling the sample at a constant rate of 0.06 K/h. The data obtained at intervals of 0.02 K are compared with those obtained with an unannealed and an annealed sample, respectively.

Abstract:An autosomal dominant immune response gene could be demonstrated in congenic resistant strains of mice which is linked to the H‐2 locus and controls the antibody response to soluble calf collagen. High responsiveness was associated with the H‐2 alleles, b and f, low responsiveness with the H‐2 alleles, d, k, m and r. Studies with calf procollagen, which contains an additional carrier moiety, indicated that these genetic differences might be expressed at the level of T cells.
