Abstract:We establish strong invariance principles for sums of stationary ρ-mixing random variables with finite and infinite second moments under weaker mixing rates.Some earlier results are improved.As applications,some results of the law of the iterated logarithm with finite and infinite variance are obtained,also a conjecture raised by Shao in 1993 is solved.

Abstract:This text is written based on the author's publications during the period from 1991 to 2001. The work is devoted to the theory of Markov intertwining operators and joinings of measure-preserving group actions, as well as to their applications to study asymptotic properties of dynamical systems. Special attention is paid to Rokhlin's problems on multiple mixing and multiple spectrum. The development of these topics over the past twenty years has not been discussed. In fact many results on joinings have frozen in time, many questions have remained open without losing their relevance, but probably have ceased to excite interest due to difficulties. For example, it is not known whether the minimal self-joinings of order 2 imply all orders? Is there a non-trivial pairwise independent joining for a weakly mixing system of zero entropy? What can be said about such joinings for transformations with small local rank? These questions are ripe for a long time, and the author reminds the reader about them, combining his story with numerous partial and related results.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of common conditional expectation to investigate Birkhoff's ergodic theorem and subadditive ergodic theorem for invariant upper probabilities. If in addition, the upper probability is ergodic, we construct an invariant probability to characterize the limit of the ergodic mean. Moreover, this skeleton probability is the unique ergodic probability in the core of the upper probability, that is equal to all probabilities in the core on all invariant sets. We have the following applications of these two theorems: $\bullet$ provide a strong law of large numbers for ergodic stationary sequence on upper probability spaces; $\bullet$ prove the multiplicative ergodic theorem on upper probability spaces; $\bullet$ establish a criterion for the ergodicity of upper probabilities in terms of independence. Furthermore, we introduce and study weak mixing for capacity preserving systems. Using the skeleton idea, we also provide several characterizations of weak mixing for invariant upper probabilities. Finally, we provide examples of ergodic and weakly mixing capacity preserving systems. As applications, we obtain new results in the classical ergodic theory. e.g. in characterizing dynamical properties on measure preserving systems, such as weak mixing, periodicity. Moreover, we use our results in the nonlinear theory to obtain the asymptotic independence, Birkhoff's type ergodic theorem, subadditive ergodic theorem, and multiplicative ergodic theorem for non-invariant probabilities.

Abstract:A new proof of the mixing property of the increments of Rosenblatt processes is given. The proof relies on infinite divisibility of the Rosenblatt law that allows to prove only the pointwise convergence of characteristic functions. Subsequently, the result is used to prove weak consistency of an estimator for the self-similarity parameter of a Rosenblatt process, and to prove the existence of a random attractor for a random dynamical system induced by a stochastic reaction-diffusion equation driven by additive Rosenblatt noise.

Abstract:The famous Rokhlin Problem asks whether mixing implies higher order mixing. So far, all the known examples of zero entropy, mixing dynamical systems enjoy a variant of the mixing via shearing mechanism. In this paper we introduce the notion of locally uniformly shearing systems (LUS) which is a rigorous way of describing the mixing via shearing mechanism. We prove that all LUS flows are mixing of all orders. We then show that mixing smooth flows on surfaces and smooth time-changes of unipotent flow are LUS. We also introduce the notion of quantitative LUS. We show that polynomially mixing systems that are polynomially LUS are in fact polynomially mixing of all orders. As a consequence we show that Kochergin flows on $\mathbb{T}^2$ (for a.e. irrational frequency) as well as smooth time-changes of unipotent flows are polynomially mixing of all orders.

Abstract:Recently, a number of authors have investigated the conditions under which a stochastic perturbation acting on an infinite dimensional dynamical system, e.g. a partial differential equation, makes the system ergodic and mixing. In particular, one is interested in finding minimal and physically natural conditions on the nature of the stochastic perturbation. I shall review recent results on this question; in particular, I shall discuss the Navier-Stokes equation on a two dimensional torus with a random force which is white noise in time, and excites only a finite number of modes. The number of excited modes depends on the viscosity $\nu$, and grows like $\nu^{-3}$ when $\nu$ goes to zero. This Markov process has a unique invariant measure and is exponentially mixing in time.

Abstract:The family of pairwise independently determined (PID) systems, i.e., those for which the independent joining is the only self joining with independent 2-marginals, is a class of systems for which the long standing open question by Rokhlin, of whether mixing implies mixing of all orders, has a positive answer. We show that in the class of weakly mixing PID one finds a positive answer for another long-standing open problem, whether the multiple ergodic averages 1/N∑_n = 0^N - 1f_1( T^nx)...f_d( T^dnx),N →∞ almost surely converge.

Abstract:The celebrated Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem asserts that, for an ergodic map, orbits of almost every point equidistributes when sampled at integer times. This result was generalized by Bourgain to many natural sparse subsets of the integers. On the other hand, the behaviour of orbits of \textbf{all} points in a dynamical system is much less understood, especially for sparse subsets of the integers. We generalize a method introduced by A. Venkatesh to tackle this problem in two directions, general $\mathbb{R}^d$ actions instead of flows, and weak mixing, rather than mixing, actions. Along the way, we also establish some basic properties of weak mixing and show weak mixing for the time 1-map of a weak mixing flow. The main examples are equidistribution along $\{(n^{1+\epsilon_i})_{i=1}^d\}$, which is a direct generalisation of Venkatesh's example, and equidistribution along random subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for horosperical action.

Abstract:We utilize an ergodic theory framework to explore sublinear expectation theory. Specifically, we investigate the pointwise Birkhoff's ergodic theorem for invariant sublinear expectation systems. By further assuming that these sublinear expectation systems are ergodic, we derive stronger results. Furthermore, we relax the conditions for the law of large numbers and the strong law of large numbers under sublinear expectations from independent and identical distribution to $\alpha$-mixing. These results can be applied to a class of stochastic differential equations driven by $G$-Brownian motion (i.e., $G$-SDEs), such as $G$-Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes. As byproducts, we also obtain a series of applications for classical ergodic theory and capacity theory.

Abstract:A classical result in ergodic theory says that there always exists a topological model for any factor map ${\it\pi}:(X,{\mathcal{X}},{\it\mu},T)\rightarrow (Y,{\mathcal{Y}},{\it\nu},S)$ of ergodic systems. That is, there are some topological factor map $\hat{{\it\pi}}:(\hat{X},\hat{T})\rightarrow ({\hat{Y}},{\hat{S}})$ and invariant measures $\hat{{\it\mu}}$, $\hat{{\it\nu}}$ such that the diagram $$\begin{eqnarray}\displaystyle & & \displaystyle \nonumber\end{eqnarray}$$ is commutative, where ${\it\phi}$ and ${\it\psi}$ are measure theoretical isomorphisms. In this paper, we show that one can require that in the above result $\hat{{\it\pi}}$ is either weakly mixing or finite-to-one. Also, we present some related questions.

Abstract:This text is an introduction to the author's cohomological approach, based on Hodge theory, to (effective) unique ergodicity and weak mixing of translation flows. Compared to earlier expositions, it emphasizes the analogy between the two problems by introducing a point of view on weak mixing based on the appropriate twisted cohomology. In particular, a new cohomological proof, based on Hodge theory for the twisted cohomology, of Veech's classical criterion for weak mixing is presented here for the first time. The exposition also aims to give a general introduction to the ergodic theory of translation flows and related systems and includes references to background material and related developments in the theory, as well as several exercises, open problems and conjectures.

Abstract:The following question due to Thouvenot is well-known in ergodic theory. Let $S$ and $T$ be automorphisms of a probability space and let $ S \otimes S $ be isomorphic to $T \otimes T $. Could $S$ be not isomorphic to $T$? Our note contains a simple answer to this question and a generalization of Kulaga's result on the corresponding isomorphism for some class of flows (see <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1101.4975" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1101.4975">arXiv:1101.4975</a>). We show that the isomorphism of weakly mixing flows $ S_t \otimes S_t $ and $ T_t \otimes T_t $ implies the isomorphism of the flows $S_t$ and $T_t$, if the latter has an integral weak limit.

Abstract:We consider skew products over subshifts of finite type in which the fibers are copies of the real line, and we study their mixing properties with respect to any infinite invariant measure given by the product of a Gibbs measure on the base and Lebesgue measure on the fibers. Assuming that the system is accessible, we prove a quantitative version of Krickeberg mixing for a class of observables which is dense in the space of continuous functions vanishing at infinity.
