Abstract:The famous Rokhlin Problem asks whether mixing implies higher order mixing. So far, all the known examples of zero entropy, mixing dynamical systems enjoy a variant of the mixing via shearing mechanism. In this paper we introduce the notion of locally uniformly shearing systems (LUS) which is a rigorous way of describing the mixing via shearing mechanism. We prove that all LUS flows are mixing of all orders. We then show that mixing smooth flows on surfaces and smooth time-changes of unipotent flow are LUS. We also introduce the notion of quantitative LUS. We show that polynomially mixing systems that are polynomially LUS are in fact polynomially mixing of all orders. As a consequence we show that Kochergin flows on $\mathbb{T}^2$ (for a.e. irrational frequency) as well as smooth time-changes of unipotent flows are polynomially mixing of all orders.

Unsolved problems on joinings, multiple mixing, spectrum, and rank

Abstract:The note is devoted to multiple mixing, spectrum, rank and self-joinings of measure-preserving transformations. We recall famous open problems, discuss related questions and some known results. A hypothetical example of an automorphism of the class $MSJ(2)\setminus MSJ(3)$ has Lebesgue spectrum, infinite rank and does not have multiple mixing. If its spectrum is simple, then we get a solution to the problems of Banach, Rokhlin and del Junco-Rudolph. The existence of such an example, of course, seems unlikely, but any facts confirming the impossibility of this amazing situation have not yet been discovered. They not found even under the condition that its local rank is positive, which ensures the finite spectral multiplicity.

Abstract:We consider skew products over subshifts of finite type in which the fibers are copies of the real line, and we study their mixing properties with respect to any infinite invariant measure given by the product of a Gibbs measure on the base and Lebesgue measure on the fibers. Assuming that the system is accessible, we prove a quantitative version of Krickeberg mixing for a class of observables which is dense in the space of continuous functions vanishing at infinity.

Abstract:This text is written based on the author's publications during the period from 1991 to 2001. The work is devoted to the theory of Markov intertwining operators and joinings of measure-preserving group actions, as well as to their applications to study asymptotic properties of dynamical systems. Special attention is paid to Rokhlin's problems on multiple mixing and multiple spectrum. The development of these topics over the past twenty years has not been discussed. In fact many results on joinings have frozen in time, many questions have remained open without losing their relevance, but probably have ceased to excite interest due to difficulties. For example, it is not known whether the minimal self-joinings of order 2 imply all orders? Is there a non-trivial pairwise independent joining for a weakly mixing system of zero entropy? What can be said about such joinings for transformations with small local rank? These questions are ripe for a long time, and the author reminds the reader about them, combining his story with numerous partial and related results.

Abstract:We extend a technique for lower-bounding the mixing time of card-shuffling Markov chains, and use it to bound the mixing time of the Rudvalis Markov chain, as well as two variants considered by Diaconis and Saloff-Coste. We show that in each case Theta(n^3 log n) shuffles are required for the permutation to randomize, which matches (up to constants) previously known upper bounds. In contrast, for the two variants, the mixing time of an individual card is only Theta(n^2) shuffles.

Abstract:Motivated by work of Dolgopyat and Nándori, we establish a general method for upgrading limit theorems for Birkhoff sums and cocycles over dynamical systems to mixing limit theorems under mild ergodicity and hyperbolicity assumptions. Building on previous work of Al-Saqban and Forni, we apply this method to obtain mixing limit theorems for particular subbundles of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle. In forthcoming work of Arana-Herrera and Honaryar these results are applied to study the arithmetic/homological complexity of long simple closed geodesics on negatively curved surfaces.

Abstract:We extend the notion of spectral independence (introduced by Anari, Liu, and Oveis Gharan [4]) from the Boolean domain to general discrete domains. This property characterises distributions with limited correlations and implies that the corresponding Glauber dynamics is rapidly mixing.As a concrete application, we show that Glauber dynamics for sampling properq-colourings mixes in polynomial-time for the family of triangle-free graphs with maximum degree Δ providedq≥ (α*+δ)Δ whereα*≈ 1.763 is the unique solution toα*= exp (1/α*) andδÞ 0 is any constant. This is the first efficient algorithm for sampling properq-colourings in this regime with possibly unbounded Δ. Our main tool of establishing spectral independence is the recursive coupling by Goldberg, Martin, and Paterson [25].

Abstract:Considering a Markov chain defined on a cycle, near-quadratic improvement of mixing is shown when only a subtle perturbation is introduced to the structure and non-reversible transition probabilities are used. More precisely, a mixing time of $O(n^{\frac{k+2}{k+1}})$ can be achieved by adding $k$ random edges to the cycle, keeping $k$ fixed while $n\to\infty$. The construction builds upon a biased random walk along the cycle.

Abstract:We study topological mixing properties and the maximal equicontinuous factor of rank-one subshifts as topological dynamical systems. We show that the maximal equicontinuous factor of a rank-one subshift is finite. We also determine all the finite factors of a rank-one shift with a condition involving the cutting and spacer parameters. For rank-one subshifts with bounded spacer parameter we completely characterize weak mixing and mixing. For rank-one subshifts with unbounded spacer parameter we prove some sufficient conditions for weak mixing and mixing. We also construct some examples showing that the characterizations for the bounded spacer parameter case do not generalize to the unbounded spacer parameter case.

Abstract:The theory of influences in product measures has profound applications in theoretical computer science, combinatorics, and discrete probability. This deep theory is intimately connected to functional inequalities and to the Fourier analysis of discrete groups. Originally, influences of functions were motivated by the study of social choice theory, wherein a Boolean function represents a voting scheme, its inputs represent the votes, and its output represents the outcome of the elections. Thus, product measures represent a scenario in which the votes of the parties are randomly and independently distributed, which is often far from the truth in real-life scenarios. We begin to develop the theory of influences for more general measures under mixing or correlation decay conditions. More specifically, we prove analogues of the KKL and Talagrand influence theorems for Markov Random Fields on bounded degree graphs with correlation decay. We show how some of the original applications of the theory of in terms of voting and coalitions extend to general measures with correlation decay. Our results thus shed light both on voting with correlated voters and on the behavior of general functions of Markov Random Fields (also called ``spin-systems") with correlation decay.

Abstract:In the problem ${\rm Mix}(H)$ one is given a graph $G$ and must decide if the Hom-graph ${\rm {\bf Hom}}(G,H)$ is connected. We show that if $H$ is a triangle-free reflexive graph with at least one cycle, ${\rm Mix}(H)$ is ${\rm coNP}$-complete. The main part of this is a reduction to the problem ${\rm NonFlat}({\rm{\bf H}})$ for a simplicial complex ${\rm{\bf H}}$, in which one is given a simplicial complex ${\rm{\bf G}}$ and must decide if there are any simplicial maps $\phi$ from ${\rm{\bf G}}$ to ${\rm{\bf H}}$ under which some $1$-cycles of ${\rm{\bf G}}$ maps to homologically non-trivial cycle of ${\rm{\bf H}}$. We show that for any reflexive graph $H$, if the clique complex ${\rm{\bf H}}$ of $H$ has a free, non-trivial homology group $H_1({\rm{\bf H}})$, then ${\rm NonFlat}({\rm{\bf H}})$ is ${\rm NP}$-complete.
