Abstract:After a brief historical review of ergodicity and mixing in dynamics, particularly in quantum dynamics, we introduce definitions of quantum ergodicity and mixing using the structure of the system's energy levels and spacings. Our definitions are consistent with the usual understanding of ergodicity and mixing. Two parameters concerning the degeneracy in energy levels and spacings are introduced. They are computed for right triangular billiards and the results indicate a very close relation between quantum ergodicity (mixing) and quantum chaos. At the end, we argue that, besides ergodicity and mixing, there may exist a third class of quantum dynamics which is characterized by a maximized entropy.

Abstract:Quantum channels, pivotal in information processing, describe transformations within quantum systems and enable secure communication and error correction. Ergodic and mixing properties elucidate their behavior. In this paper, we establish a sufficient condition for mixing based on a quantum Markov-Dobrushin inequality. We prove that if the Markov-Dobrushin constant of a quantum channel exceeds zero, it exhibits exponential mixing behavior. We explore limitations of some quantum channels, demonstrating that unistochastic channels are not mixing. Additionally, we analyze ergodicity of a class of mixed-unitary channels associated with finite groups of unitary operators. Finally, we apply our results to the qubit depolarizing channel.

Abstract:The development of classical ergodic theory has had a significant impact in the areas of mathematics, physics, and, in general, applied sciences. The quantum ergodic theory of Hamiltonian dynamics has its motivations to understand thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. Quantum channel, a completely positive trace-preserving map, represents a most general representation of quantum dynamics and is an essential aspect of quantum information theory and quantum computation. In this work, we study the ergodic theory of quantum channels by characterizing different levels of ergodic hierarchy from integrable to mixing. The quantum channels on single systems are constructed from the unitary operators acting on bipartite states and tracing out the environment. The interaction strength of these unitary operators measured in terms of operator entanglement provides sufficient conditions for the channel to be mixing. By using block diagonal unitary operators, we construct a set of non-ergodic channels. By using canonical form of two-qubit unitary operator, we analytically construct the channels on single qubit ranging from integrable to mixing. Moreover, we also study interacting many-body quantum systems that include the famous Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model and show that they display mixing within the framework of the quantum channel.

Abstract:We study the ergodicity and mixing of quantum kicked rotor (QKR) with two distinct approaches. In one approach, we use the definitions of quantum ergodicity and mixing recently proposed in [Phys. Rev. E 94, 022150 (2016)], which involve only eigen-energies (Floquet quasi-energies for QKR). In the other approach, we study ergodicity and mixing with quantum Poincarè section, which is plotted with a method that maps a wave function unitarily onto quantum phase space composed of Planck cells. Classical Poincarè section can be recovered with the effective Planck constant gradually diminishing. We demonstrate that the two approaches can capture the quantum and classical characteristics of ergodicity and mixing of QKR, and give consistent results with classical model at semiclassical limit. Therefore, we establish a correspondence between quantum ergodicity (mixing) and classical ergodicity (mixing).

Abstract:Recently, a number of authors have investigated the conditions under which a stochastic perturbation acting on an infinite dimensional dynamical system, e.g. a partial differential equation, makes the system ergodic and mixing. In particular, one is interested in finding minimal and physically natural conditions on the nature of the stochastic perturbation. I shall review recent results on this question; in particular, I shall discuss the Navier-Stokes equation on a two dimensional torus with a random force which is white noise in time, and excites only a finite number of modes. The number of excited modes depends on the viscosity $\nu$, and grows like $\nu^{-3}$ when $\nu$ goes to zero. This Markov process has a unique invariant measure and is exponentially mixing in time.

Abstract:We review a new form of entropy suggested by us, with origin in mixing of states of systems due to interactions and deformations of phase cells. It is demonstrated that this nonextensive form also leads to asymmetric maximal entropy configurations unlike Shannon entropy. We discuss how, beginning with quantum entanglement of microsystems with one another and with the environment, one can obtain classical stochasticity for our form of entropy.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of common conditional expectation to investigate Birkhoff's ergodic theorem and subadditive ergodic theorem for invariant upper probabilities. If in addition, the upper probability is ergodic, we construct an invariant probability to characterize the limit of the ergodic mean. Moreover, this skeleton probability is the unique ergodic probability in the core of the upper probability, that is equal to all probabilities in the core on all invariant sets. We have the following applications of these two theorems: $\bullet$ provide a strong law of large numbers for ergodic stationary sequence on upper probability spaces; $\bullet$ prove the multiplicative ergodic theorem on upper probability spaces; $\bullet$ establish a criterion for the ergodicity of upper probabilities in terms of independence. Furthermore, we introduce and study weak mixing for capacity preserving systems. Using the skeleton idea, we also provide several characterizations of weak mixing for invariant upper probabilities. Finally, we provide examples of ergodic and weakly mixing capacity preserving systems. As applications, we obtain new results in the classical ergodic theory. e.g. in characterizing dynamical properties on measure preserving systems, such as weak mixing, periodicity. Moreover, we use our results in the nonlinear theory to obtain the asymptotic independence, Birkhoff's type ergodic theorem, subadditive ergodic theorem, and multiplicative ergodic theorem for non-invariant probabilities.

Many-body quantum chaos in mixtures of multiple species

Abstract:We study spectral correlations in many-body quantum mixtures of fermions, bosons, and qubits with periodically kicked spreading and mixing of species. We take two types of mixing, namely, Jaynes-Cummings and Rabi, respectively, satisfying and breaking the conservation of a total number of species. We analytically derive the generating Hamiltonians whose spectral properties determine the spectral form factor in the leading order. We further analyze the system-size (L) scaling of Thouless time t* , beyond which the spectral form factor follows the prediction of random matrix theory. The L dependence of t* crosses over from lnL to L2 with an increasing Jaynes-Cummings mixing between qubits and fermions or bosons in a finite-size chain, and it finally settles to t*∝O(L2) in the thermodynamic limit for any mixing strength. The Rabi mixing between qubits and fermions leads to t*∝O(lnL) , previously predicted for single species of qubits or fermions without total-number conservation. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.L032201 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:Ergodic theory provides a rigorous mathematical description of chaos in classical dynamical systems, including a formal definition of the ergodic hierarchy. How ergodic dynamics is reflected in the energy levels and eigenstates of a quantum system is the central question of quantum chaos, but a rigorous quantum notion of ergodicity remains elusive. Closely related to the classical ergodic hierarchy is a less-known notion of cyclic approximate periodic transformations [see, e.g., I. Cornfield, S. Fomin, and Y. Sinai, Ergodic Theory (Springer-Verlag New York, 1982)], which maps any "ergodic" dynamical system to a cyclic permutation on a circle and arguably represents the most elementary form of ergodicity. This paper shows that cyclic ergodicity generalizes to quantum dynamical systems, and provides a rigorous observable-independent definition of quantum ergodicity. It implies the ability to construct an orthonormal basis, where quantum dynamics transports any initial basis vector to have a sufficiently large overlap with each of the other basis vectors in a cyclic sequence. It is proven that the basis, maximizing the overlap over all such quantum cyclic permutations, is obtained via the discrete Fourier transform of the energy eigenstates. This relates quantum cyclic ergodicity to energy level statistics. The level statistics of Wigner-Dyson random matrices, usually associated with quantum chaos on empirical grounds, is derived as a special case of this general relation. To demonstrate generality, we prove that irrational flows on a 2D torus are classical and quantum cyclic ergodic, with spectral rigidity distinct from Wigner-Dyson. Finally, we motivate a quantum ergodic hierarchy of operators and discuss connections to eigenstate thermalization. This work provides a general framework for transplanting some rigorous concepts of ergodic theory to quantum dynamical systems.

Abstract:Boltzmann's ergodic hypothesis furnishes a possible explanation for the emergence of statistical mechanics in the framework of classical physics. In quantum mechanics, the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) is instead generally considered as a possible route to thermalization. This is because the notion of ergodicity itself is vague in the quantum world and it is often simply taken as a synonym for thermalization. Here we show, in an elementary way, that when quantum ergodicity is properly defined, it is, in fact, equivalent to ETH. In turn, ergodicity is equivalent to thermalization, thus implying the equivalence of thermalization and ETH. This result previously appeared in [De Palma et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 220401 (2015)], but becomes particularly clear in the present context. We also show that it is possible to define a classical analogue of ETH which is implicitly assumed to be satisfied when constructing classical statistical mechanics. Classical and quantum statistical mechanics are built according to the familiar standard prescription. This prescription, however, is ontologically justified only in the quantum world.

$ε$-Uniform Mixing in Discrete Quantum Walks

Abstract:We study whether the probability distribution of a discrete quantum walk can get arbitrarily close to uniform, given that the walk starts with a uniform superposition of the outgoing arcs of some vertex. We establish a characterization of this phenomenon on regular non-bipartite graphs in terms of their adjacency eigenvalues and eigenprojections. Using theory from association schemes, we show this phenomenon happens on a strongly regular graph $X$ if and only if $X$ or $\overline{X}$ has parameters $(4m^2, 2m^2\pm m, m^2\pm m, m^2\pm m)$ where $m\ge 2$.

Equilibration of Quantum Chaotic Systems

Abstract:The quantum ergordic theorem for a large class of quantum systems was proved by von Neumann [Z. Phys. 57, 30 (1929)] and again by Reimann [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 190403 (2008)] in a more practical and well-defined form. However, it is not clear whether the theorem applies to quantum chaotic systems. With a rigorous proof still elusive, we illustrate and verify this theorem for quantum chaotic systems with examples. Our numerical results show that a quantum chaotic system with an initial low-entropy state will dynamically relax to a high-entropy state and reach equilibrium. The quantum equilibrium state reached after dynamical relaxation bears a remarkable resemblance to the classical microcanonical ensemble. However, the fluctuations around equilibrium are distinct: The quantum fluctuations are exponential while the classical fluctuations are Gaussian.

Abstract:A discrete quantum process is represented by a sequence of quantum operations, which are completely positive maps that are not necessarily trace preserving. We consider quantum processes that are obtained by repeated iterations of a quantum operation with noise. Such ergodic quantum processes generalize independent quantum processes. An ergodic theorem describing convergence to equilibrium for a general class of such processes was recently obtained by Movassagh and Schenker. Under irreducibility and mixing conditions, we obtain a central limit type theorem describing fluctuations around the ergodic limit.

Abstract:Motivated by a model presented by S. Gudder, we study a quantum generalization of Markov chains and discuss the relation between these maps and open quantum random walks, a class of quantum channels described by S. Attal et al. We consider processes which are nonhomogeneous in time, i.e., at each time step, a possibly distinct evolution kernel. Inspired by a spectral technique described by L. Saloff-Coste and J. Zúñiga, we define a notion of ergodicity for nonhomogeneous quantum Markov chains and describe a criterion for ergodicity of such objects in terms of singular values. As a consequence we obtain a quantum version of the classical probability result concerning the behavior of the columns (or rows) of the iterates of a stochastic matrix induced by a finite, irreducible, aperiodic Markov chain. We are also able to relate the ergodic property presented here with the notions of weak and uniform ergodicity known in the literature of noncommutative $L^1$-spaces.

Abstract:Mixing dynamical maps describing open quantum systems can lead from Markovian to non-Markovian processes. Being surprising and counter-intuitive, this result has been used as argument against characterization of non-Markovianity in terms of information exchange. Here, we demonstrate that, quite the contrary, mixing can be understood in a natural way which is fully consistent with existing theories of memory effects. In particular, we show how mixing-induced non-Markovianity can be interpreted in terms of the distinguishability of quantum states, system-environment correlations and the information flow between system and environment.
