Abstract:Based on the embedded atom method (EAM) and molecular dynamics (MD) method, the mono-crystalline copper with different defects is investigated through tension and nanoindentation simulation. The single-crystal copper nanowire with surface defects is firstly studied through tension. For validation, the tension simulations for nanowire without defect are carried out under different temperatures and strain rates. The defects on nanowires are then systematically studied in considering different defects orientation distribution. It is found that the Young’s modulus is insensitive of surface defects and centro-plane defects. However, the yield strength and yield point show a significant decrease due to the different defects. Specially, the 〖45〗^° defect in surface and in (200) plane exerts the biggest influence to the yield strength, about 34.20% and 51.45% decrease are observed, respectively. Different defects are observed to serve as a dislocation source and different necking positions of the nanowires during tension are found. During nanoindentation simulation, dislocation is found nucleating below the contact area, but no obvious dislocation is generated around the nano-cavity. Comparing with the perfect substrate during nanoindentation, the substrate with nano-cavities emerged less dislocations, it is supposed that the nano-cavity absorbed part of the indent energy, and less plastic deformation happened in the defected substrate.

Abstract:Nanostructured metals with bimodal grain size distribution, composed of coarse grain (CG) and nanograin (NG) regions, have proved to have high strength and good ductility. Here, numerical investigation, based on the mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity theory and the Johnson–Cook failure model, focuses on effects of (1) distribution characteristics of the CG regions and (2) the constitutive relation of the NG with different grain sizes on fracture behavior in a center-cracked tension specimen of bimodal nanostructured Cu. High strain rate simulations show that both of them directly influence load response and energy history, and importantly, they are closely related to the fracture pattern. This study shows that both CG region bridging and crack deflection toughen the bimodal nanostructured Cu significantly, while debonding enhances the overall ductility moderately. Simulations also show that with volume fraction of the CG regions increasing, both structural strength and ductility of the bimodal nanostructured Cu specimen can be improved.

Abstract:Nanostructured (NS) metals with bimodal grain size distribution that consist of coarse grained (CG) and nano-grained (NG) regions have proved to have both high strength and good ductility. In this paper a numerical investigation, using the combination of a mechanism-based strain gradient plasticity theory, a micromechanics composite model, and the Johnson–Cook failure model, is conducted to investigate the effects of the distribution of the CG inclusions and their shape on fracture behavior of a bimodal NS copper. Load–response relations are employed to evaluate the loading history stability, while apparent crack length and strain energy history are used to analyze the fracture resistance. This study shows that both crack bridging in the CG inclusions and crack deflection in the NG matrix can significantly toughen the bimodal NS Cu. Our simulations also show that there exists a critical volume fraction of CG inclusions for some microstructures at which the fracture resistance of the bimodal NS Cu is at its minimal state and thus it should be avoided in material design.
Simulating Size and Volume Fraction-Dependent Strength and Ductility of Nanotwinned Composite Copper

Abstract:This work presents a micromechanical model to investigate mechanical properties of nanotwinned dual-phase copper, consisting of the coarse grained phase and the nanotwinned phase. Both strengthening mechanisms of nanotwinning and the contributions of nanovoids/microcracks have been taken into account in simulations. With the aid of modified mean-field approach, the stress-strain relationship is derived by combining the constitutive relations of the coarse grained phase and the nanotwinned phase. Numerical results show that the proposed model enables us to describe the mechanical properties of the nanotwinned composite copper, including both yield strength and ductility. The calculations based on the proposed model agree well with the results from finite element method (FEM). The predicted yield strength and ductility are sensitive to the twin spacing, grain size, as well as the volume fractions of phases in this composite copper. These results will benefit the optimization of both strength and ductility by controlling constituent fractions and the size of the microstructures in metallic materials.
Microscopic Analysis by EBSD Method on Fatigue Crack Propagation Behaviour in Ultrafine-Grained Copper

Abstract:Fatigue crack propagation behavior of ultrafine-grained copper precessed by equal channel angular pressing, ECAP, was investigated by electron backscatter diffraction, EBSD, technique as well as atomic force microscopy, AFM. The results show that the crack propagation rate, da/dN, was smaller in ECAP-processed specimen than the coarse-grained counterpart at higher stress intensity factor range, ΔK. The decrease in the da/dN in spite of the small grain size is attributed to the grain coarsening at the crack tip during fatigue which results in the increase in the roughness induced crack closure. In the range below ΔK<5MPa√, Region I, large-scale grain coarsening in the limited number of grains is dominant due to the small ΔK and the large number of fatigue cycles to cross the plastic zone, N_p. In the range above ΔK>5MPa√, Region II, small-scale grain coarsening in many grains is dominant due to large ΔK and small N_p. The grain coarsening was introduced as a result of the migration of high angle grain boundary. The large initial transgranular strain and unstable grain boundaries are considered to be the causes of the strain-induced grain boundary migration. The X-ray stress at the crack tip was found to be smaller than δ_<0.2> due to the strain relaxation and grain coarsening.

Abstract:The fracture anisotropy of ultrafine grained pure Cu processed by eight passes of equal channel angular pressing in route B-C was investigated based on elastic-plastic fracture mechanics. For different crack planes and different crack propagation directions, both the global fracture initiation toughness measured by J(IC) and K-IC and the crack growth toughness represented by the non-dimensional tearing modulus T-R were evaluated by accurately determining the J-integral resistance curves. Furthermore, the crack tip opening displacements at fracture initiation were also measured through crack profile analysis to determine the local crack initiation J-integral J(i). The results demonstrate that the specimen orientation has a pronounced influence on the fracture toughness of the ultrafine grained Cu. Among all the tested orientations, the fracture resistance is highest in the transverse direction with K-IC = 99 MPa m(1/2) and T-R = 100, and lowest in the extrusion direction with K-IC = 66 MPa m(1/2) and T-R = 30. The origin causing the anisotropic fracture toughness is discussed based on detailed fracture appearance characterization and microscale crack path analysis.

Abstract:Ultrafine-grained Cu processed by ECAP (Equal Channel Angular Pressing) with the grain size of d = 300 nm was fatigued at low stress intensity factor to investigate the grain coarsening mechanism during fatigue. EBSD (Electron Backscatter Diffraction) and AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) methods were employed for the nanometer-scale analysis. The results show that fatigue damage area around the crack is observed in coarsened grains. Slip damages with the primary and secondary slip system were activated during fatigue. The detailed observation before and after fatigue at the same region revealed that the grain boundary of the coarsened grain moves as a high angle boundary. The initial residual strain in ECAP-processed Cu is considered to be one of the driving factors of the high angle boundary.

Abstract:Tungsten-copper composites are used in harsh environments because of their superior material properties. This work addresses a tungsten-copper composite made of 20 wt.% copper, which was subjected to grain refinement by high-pressure torsion, whereby the deformation temperature was varied between room temperature and 400 °C to tailor the grain size. Deformation was performed up to microstructural saturation and verified by hardness measurement and scanning electron microscopy. From the refined nanostructured material, micro-cantilever bending beams with cross-sections spanning from 5 × 5 to 35 × 35 μm 2 were cut to examine possible size effects and the grain size influence on the fracture behavior. Fracture experiments were performed in situ inside a scanning electron microscope by applying a quasi-static loading protocol with partial unloading steps. Inspection of the fracture surfaces showed that all cantilevers failed in an inter-crystalline fashion. Nevertheless, remaining coarser tungsten grains impacted the resultant fracture toughness and morphology. Cantilevers fabricated from the 400 °C specimen exhibited a fracture toughness of 220 50 . For the room temperature cantilevers, a fracture toughness of 410 50 was observed, which declined to 340 30 for cantilevers < 10 × 10 μm 2 , confirming a size effect. The increased fracture toughness is attributed to the delamination-like structures formed in the room temperature sample.

Abstract:To realize the application of ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials in micro-forming, the micro/meso-deformation and fracture behavior of UFG pure copper processed using equal-channel angular pressing were analyzed by making in/ex-situ observations during tensile testing. The evolution of surface cracks and inner voids was apparent in the in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and synchrotron radiation X-ray tomograms, respectively. The results indicate that the surface-crack evolution of UFG pure copper can be correlated with strain localization when the flow stress decreases after peaking. The effects of grain size and shear texture on damage evolution during the fracture process are also discussed. This work comprehensively explores the plasticity and fracture/failure mechanisms in UFG Cu samples during the micro-forming process.

Abstract:A three-point fracture test was taken out on single notched beams of ultra-high toughness cementitious composites (UHTCC), with three fiber volume fractions of 1.5%, 2.0% and 2.5%, in order to investigate the fracture property of this material. Ductile fracture exhibits for this material. On the basis of nonlinear fracture mechanics, the double-J criterion, that is the starting point of ductile stage, JIC, and the starting point of failure stage, JIF, is applied to estimate the fracture toughness of UHTCC. When J < JIC, there is no macrocrack; J > JIF, the failure crack is localized; and JIC < J ≤ JIF, the deformation develops stably. Based on the experimental results, the JR curve of UHTCC has three stages, with the dividing points of initial cracking and crack localizing. Furthermore, equal fracture energy is required for the equal quantity of crack growth.

Abstract:This study is mainly focused on the relationship between the microstructure and fracture toughness of ultrafine-grained Cu produced by equal channel angular pressing. Crack initiation toughness (KIC) and crack growth toughness (TR) are quantitatively evaluated along different crack planes to identify the crack plane with minimum toughness. The results show that grain elongation plane (GEP), making an angle of 29° with the extrusion direction, exhibits the lowest fracture toughness (KIC = 54 MPa m1/2 and TR = 6), while the crack extending normal to GEP confronts the greatest fracture resistance. Both KIC and TR increase monotonically with the inclination angle between the crack plane and the GEP. The preferential micro-void nucleation and growth along the deformation-induced elongated grain boundaries lead to the formation of finely dimpled fracture facets on the fracture surface and favorable crack extension. The presence of distributed regions with elongated grains efficiently contributes to enhancement of fracture toughness by promoting microscopic crack deflections and crack path tortuosity.

Abstract:The application of high-density pulsed electric current (HDPEC) is one of the effective methods for the modification of material properties in metals. To evaluate fracture behavior modified by HDPEC, critical fracture parameters such as fracture strength, fracture toughness, and fracture profile of crack tip are important criteria. This work investigates the finite element analysis (FEA) based evaluation of improved fracture characteristics by the application of HDPEC in a SUS 316 austenite stainless steel. Tensile tests were first conducted to deduce the modified material properties with different conditions of HDPEC. A series of theoretical considerations was employed to estimate the modified fracture toughness. The relationship between critical fracture strength and critical crack length was numerically determined based on the estimated fracture toughness. The results in FEA showed that critical von Mises stress on the singularity at the crack tip increases as the effect of HDPEC increases. The evolution of increased fracture toughness with respect to conditions of HDPEC was specified. Crack opening profiles were simulated to assist the explanation. The evaluation of fracture parameters in this study proposes that the modified material properties by HDPEC play a positive role to resist crack propagation.

Abstract:This study investigates the effect of microstructural variations on the mechanical properties of CuZn35Mn2Al1Fe1-C-GS brass alloy. Specimens taken from positions with different cooling rates in a large cast component exhibit coarse-grained (approximately 5 mm) and fine-grained (approximately 1 mm) microstructures. Fine-grained samples demonstrate at least a 7% increase in Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) and up to a 33% higher long crack threshold ΔKth,lc . Hardness measurements are similar between microstructures. The NASGRO model and cyclic R-curve are applied to fit crack propagation data, and fractographic analysis reveals distinct fracture mechanisms. The results indicate that a fine-grained microstructure enhances tensile strength and crack resistance, providing valuable insights for the design and maintenance of heavy machinery components made from cast brass.

Abstract:Ultrafine-grained (UFG) materials can effectively solve the problem of size effects and improve the mechanical properties due to its ultra-high strength. This paper is dedicated to analyzing the deformation behavior and microstructural evolution of UFG pure copper based on T-shape upsetting test. Experimental results demonstrate that: the edge radius and V-groove angle have significant effects on the rib height and aspect ratio λ during T-shape upsetting; while the surface roughness has little effect on the forming load in the first stage, but in the second stage the influence becomes significant. The dynamic recrystallization temperature of UFG pure copper is between 200 °C and 250 °C.

Abstract:Using classical molecular dynamics simulation, the fracture behavior is investigated for functionally graded joint interfaces between copper and aluminum under tension at nano-scale. Results show that the fracture of a pristine functionally graded Cu/Al interface is ductile accompanied by voids nucleation and the time when voids begin to grow just corresponds to the maximum interface strength which is 25% higher than that of an ordinary Cu/Al interface without a functionally graded zone. It is found that the aluminum lattice is the most dangerous area to accommodate a crack where a ductile-to-brittle transition occurs. The interface strength has a linear dependency on initial crack length and a tilted crack results in a weaker degradation of the interface strength as compared with a horizontal one. Results in this paper may shed light on both design and application of material interfaces in many fields such as coating and electronic packing.

Abstract:Fracture test of three-point flexure was taken on ultra-high toughness cementitious composites (UHTCCs), which is a strain-hardening material, to investigate its ductile fracture performance. On the basis of nonlinear fracture mechanics, a double J-integral criterion was introduced to evaluate its fracture property. Moreover, its J(R) curve was studied and simplified. The results showed that the J(R) curve had three stages, with the two separations as the initial cracking point and the crack localizing point. In the stable stage, equal energy was required for equal quantity of crack growth. Moreover, the crack covering area was applicable to describe the crack growth of UHTCC. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In this paper, we present the dynamic response of commercially pure copper subjected to combined tension-torsion loads representative of real case impact scenarios. Experiments were conducted both quasi statically, at a strain rate equal to 10−3 s−1, and dynamically at strain rates in the region between 500 s−1 and 1000 s−1. All high rate experiments were conducted using a novel Split Hopkinson Tension-Torsion Bar instrumented with high-speed photographic equipment. The dynamic combined loading experiments demonstrate the capability of the apparatus to generate longitudinal and torsional stress waves which are synchronised upon loading of the specimen. The presented data show that dynamic equilibrium conditions and nearly steady strain rates were achieved during the experiments. Additionally, the analyses of the loading paths show that nearly proportional strain loading was attained during testing.The measured experimental results illustrate, for the first time, the failure stress locus of the material over a wide range of stress states including pure torsion, shear-dominated combined tension-shear, tension-dominated combined tension-shear and plain tension. The quasi-static and dynamic failure envelopes are herein presented in the normal stress vs shear stress space to motivate the development of accurate and effective constitutive models. To conclude, the Drucker-Prager criterion was employed to approximate the failure loci and to assess the rate sensitivity of the material. A moderate asymmetry of the uniaxial ultimate stresses in tension and compression is predicted both at quasi-static and dynamic strain rates.

Abstract:In this paper, a series of low-temperature CVN (Charpy V-notch impact test) and DWTT (drop-weight tear test) experiments were carried out to deal with the intensifying contradiction of strength and toughness of ultra-high-strength pipeline steel. The fracture behavior and toughening mechanisms of ultra-high-strength pipeline steel were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and backscattered electron diffraction systems. The results show that DWTT fractures in ultra-high-strength pipeline steel had a variety of unconventional morphological features compared to CVN fractures, including ridge protrusion in ductile fracture conditions and a large-size fracture platform in brittle fracture conditions. Therefore, DWTT fractures contained more information about the material fracturing process, and could better reflect the actual process of material fracturing. In ultra-high-strength pipeline steel, fine-grained granular bainite caused cracks to undergo large deflections or frequent small transitions, which consumed additional energy and improved toughness. In contrast, large-sized granular bainite, which consisted of low-angle grain boundaries, did not effectively prevent crack propagation when it encountered cracks, which was not conducive to improved toughness. Moreover, the M/A constituents in large-sized granular bainite aggregated, cracked, or fell off, which could easily lead to the formation of microcracks and was also detrimental to toughening.

Abstract:Because the growth behaviors of fatigue cracks are crucial for the safe assessment of structural components, the crack propagation behaviors of coarse-grained copper (CG Cu) subjected to cyclic torsion combined with different axial static stresses were studied. The crack bifurcation behavior is related to the strain amplitude applied. When the strain amplitude is lower, both the type and the magnitude of axial stress have no significant effect on the direction in which the primary crack branches, which is mainly determined by the position of the maximum normal plane. However, when the strain amplitude is higher, the bifurcated crack deviates visibly from the maximum normal plane, which can be attributed to the high degree of plastic deformation and microcracks caused by slip bands along longitudinal direction.

Abstract:The characterization of frictional behavior in ductile metals is a crucial aspect of materials science, as it relates to the plastic deformation of the material. However, due to the intricate dislocation evolution at the submicron/nanometer scale, the isolation of the basic plastic mechanisms remains challenging. In this study, nanoscratching technology is employed to investigate submicron/nanometer-level plastic deformation in individual grains of polycrystalline copper. To achieve this, a crystal plastic constitutive model for copper materials is developed by incorporating geometrically necessary dislocation effects. The calibration of the constitutive model is conducted with great precision and specificity, leveraging mechanical responses, surface accumulation morphology, and indentation size effects from nanoindentation experiments of 110-oriented single crystal copper. Through the combination of crystal plastic finite element simulation and nanoscratching experiments, the plastic flow of the material is thoroughly analyzed. The results demonstrate that the anisotropic scratching behavior is influenced by different orientations of individual grains, taking into account both statistical storage dislocations and geometrically necessary dislocations. The insights gleaned from this study offer a valuable contribution to our understanding of the plastic mechanisms of metals at a small scale, enhancing the design and performance of advanced materials for a wide range of applications.
