Abstract:A novel and simple two-frequency Brillouin fiber laser is presented. It is based on a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity with fiber Bragg gratings as reflectors. The model of stimulated Brillouin scattering in fiber grating-based Fabry-Perot resonator is investigated. The laser allows conversion efficiency of close to 100% and suppresses the higher-order Stokes waves. The theoretical prediction is presented and the experimental demonstration is realized.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a femtosecond laser plane-by-plane (Pl-b-Pl) technology for inscription of high-quality fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The spherical aberration (SA) was introduced to elongate the focal volume, and then combined with the scanning process, an expanded rectangular refractive index modification (RIM) region can be achieved. Such RIM regions exhibit a length of 15 µm and a width of 14 µm. Note that it consists of a negative region and a positive region. We have systematically studied the influence of the overlap between the RIM region and fiber core on the spectrum of FBG. After optimizing, the core of a conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) is covered completely by using the positive RIM region, resulting in a significant enhancement of the coupling strength coefficient (i.e., 3177.6 m-1). A 500 µm long FBG assembled by using these RIM regions can achieve a high reflectivity of 95.83%. Moreover, the cladding mode resonances in transmission spectrum are suppressed thoroughly, since the localized effect in RIM region was avoided. In addition, this FBG exhibits a high birefringence of 2.13 × 10-4. Therefore, the proposed fabrication method can be used to inscribe high-quality FBGs that could be used in many fields such as communication, fiber laser, polarization-selective filtering and multi-parameter sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate a narrow-linewidth high-order-mode (HOM) Brillouin random fiber laser (BRFL) based on a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) and distributed Rayleigh random feedback in a half-open linear cavity. The single-mode operation of the laser radiation with sub-kilohertz linewidth is achieved thanks to distributed Brillouin amplification and Rayleigh scattering along kilometer-long single mode fibers whilst a few mode fiber-based LPFGs enable the transverse mode conversion among a broadband wavelength range. Meanwhile, a dynamic fiber grating (DFG) is embedded and incorporated to manipulate and purify the random modes, which hence suppresses the frequency drift resulting from random mode hopping. Consequently, the random laser emission with either high-order scalar or vector modes can be generated with a high laser efficiency of 25.5% and an ultra-narrow 3-dB linewidth of 230 Hz. Furthermore, the dependence of the laser efficiency and frequency stability on the gain fiber length are also experimentally investigated. It is believed that our approach could provide a promising platform for a wide range of applications such as coherent optical communication, high-resolution imaging, highly sensitive sensing, etc.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Brillouin fiber laser (BFL) is proposed based on the hybrid fiber ring cavity composed of two types of fibers with different Brillouin shifts. Single mode fiber (SMF) and truewave fiber (TWF) are used in our experiments. Bi-directional dual-wavelength Brillouin lasing is achieved in the hybrid fiber ring cavity. The lasing lights along the two directions come from the Stokes waves generated in the two fibers, respectively, with different Brillouin shifts, however, they share the same fiber ring cavity. The BFL based on the hybrid fiber ring cavity provides a simple possible way to realize Brillouin fiber optical gyroscopes (BFOGs) without lock-in effect.

Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated an unprecedented high-efficiency Brillouin random fiber laser (BRFL) by fiber length optimization in a half-open linear cavity. In terms of the trade-off between Brillouin gain saturation and weak distributed Rayleigh feedback strength, optimal laser efficiency associated to proper fiber length in a BRFL was theoretically predicted. As a proof-of-concept, a unidirectional-pumped BRFL with a half-open linear cavity was experimentally conducted, in which a fiber Bragg grating at one end of gain fiber served as a high-reflection mirror while Rayleigh scattering enabled distributed feedback for random lasing resonance. Results show that the optimal fiber length of ∼3.4 km in the BRFL offers sufficient Rayleigh scattered random feedback whilst alleviating the Brillouin gain saturation to a large extent. Consequently, an optimal laser efficiency of 77.0% in the BRFL was experimentally demonstrated, which reaches the state-of-the-art high record. Laser characteristics, including the linewidth, statistics and frequency jitter were also systematically investigated. It is believed that such efficient BRFL could provide a promising platform for inspiring new explorations of laser physics as well as potentials in long-haul coherent communication and fiber-optic sensing.

Abstract:This article assembles a distributed feedback (DFB) cavity on the sidewalls of the optical fiber by using very simple fabrication techniques including two-beam interference lithography and dip-coating. The DFB laser structure comprises graduated gratings on the optical fiber sidewalls which are covered with a layer of colloidal quantum dots. Directional DFB lasing is observed from the fiber facet due to the coupling effect between the grating and the optical fiber. The directional lasing from the optical fiber facet exhibits a small solid divergence angle as compared to the conventional laser. It can be attributed to the two-dimensional light confinement in the fiber waveguide. An analytical approach based on the Bragg condition and the coupled-wave theory was developed to explain the characteristics of the laser device. The intensity of the output coupled laser is tuned by the coupling coefficient, which is determined by the angle between the grating vector and the fiber axis. These results afford opportunities to integrate different DFB lasers on the same optical fiber sidewall, achieving multi-wavelength self-aligned DFB lasers for a directional emission. The proposed technique may provide an alternative to integrating DFB lasers for applications in networking, optical sensing, and power delivery.

Abstract:An amplified feedback DFB laser with extended modulation bandwidth is experimentally demonstrated in this paper. All the three sections of laser cavity, including DFB section, phase section and amplified feedback section, have the same active layer, which can avoid the butt-joint re-growth process. The gratings in both DFB section and amplified feedback section are fabricated by the Reconstruction Equivalent Chirp technique, which can significantly decrease the difficulties in realizing precise grating structure. An enhanced -3 dB bandwidth of 19 GHz is realized by means of a normal low-frequency wafer. 16-QAM signals with the rate of 30 MSymbol/s and the center frequency of 15 GHz are transmitted via 10 km radio-over-fiber link employing the as-fabricated directly modulated DFB laser, and the average error vector magnitude of the whole link is 4.38%.

Abstract:<p>A narrow-linewidth erbium-doped fiber laser based on the fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) fabricated was proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A pair of FBGs with reflectivity of 92% and 10%, respectively, at the center wavelength of 1580 nm were inscribed in standard SMF-28 fibers without hydrogen loading by femtosecond laser point-by-point directly writing method, which was used as mirrors for wavelength selection of fiber laser, gratings full width at half maximum (FWHM) was less than 0.15 nm. A simple linear-cavity fiber laser was realized based on gain medium, pump source and FBGs. When gain medium of Er-doped fiber is selected 8 m, a stable single wavelength of 1579 nm laser with a 3 dB linewidth of 0.06 nm was obtained. Its output power is 24.1 mW when the maximum pump power is 600 mA, and its single wavelength of 1579 nm is consistent with the central wavelength of the fabricated FBGs. This type of laser source shows real promise for applications in coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry and high resolution fiber sensor systems.</p>

Abstract:Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) have great significance in the development of high-power fiber laser systems. Fabrication sources, fibers, and fabrication technology would affect the performance of FBGs directly. In this research, a scanning exposure method for fabricating FBGs in different types of photosensitive fibers with a 213nm solid-state laser source was proposed. The Q-switched Nd: YVO4 laser fifth harmonic source was compared with the traditional excimer lasers and the impacts of lengths, center wavelengths, titled angles, and apodization on the reflection and transmission spectra of FBGs were discussed. The scanning fabrication system, which can realize the tilting of phase mask and the adjustment and monitoring of tension, was built according to the characteristics that the output spot diameter of the fabrication source was sub-millimeter. While the high quality of fabrication was guaranteed, FBGs with lengths of 3mm~20mm, center wavelengths shift of 0nm~4.2nm, and tilted angles of 0~21 were obtained, and all the parameters were simultaneously adjusted and controlled, the deepest transmission loss of about -70dB. FBGs fabricated were of good stability and repeatability, especially in hydrogen fibers whose stability was independent of high-temperature annealing (1500C) which was different from the fabrication results of excimer laser sources. Then the unconformity between experimental results and theoretical simulation was discussed and the optimization schemes were proposed. The experimental results and analysis provided a better experimental scheme for UV laser fabricating FBGs and the experimental basis for further optimizing the fabrication technology and further analyzing the microscopic mechanism of optical fiber photosensitivity.

Abstract:A dynamic interferometer based on the fiber-Bragg -grating laser diode (FBG-LD) is proposed in this paper. The theoretical model of the FBG-LD base on the mode-structure model of the external cavity lasers is established, illustrating that the mode hopping probability lowers with the decreased reflectivity of the chip AR end. The random wavelength hopping of 10-2 pm level of the FBG-LD is observed, hardly influencing the dynamic interferometry, which is proven theoretically and experimentally. A Twyman-Green dynamic interferometer with the FBG-LD is constructed for the wavefront measurement of the triple-reflection system. According to the experimental results, it is clear that the interferogram contrast with FBG-LD is improved significantly in the extremely low reflectivity of 0.043.

Abstract:A distributed feedback (DFB) fiber laser based on a 32-mm long pi-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating inscribed using the femtosecond point-by-point technique in a single-mode erbium-doped optical fiber (CorActive EDF-L 1500) is demonstrated. The lasing power of the DFB laser reaches 0.7 mW at a wavelength of 1550 nm when pumped with a laser diode at a wavelength of 976 nm and power of 525 mW. The width of the lasing spectrum is 17 kHz. It is shown that the pi-phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating fs-inscribed in a non-PM fiber provides the selection of the single polarization mode of the DFB laser. DFB laser formation in a highly doped non-photosensitive optical fiber (CoreActive SCF-ER60-8/125-12) is also demonstrated.

Abstract:A fast and wideband wavelength-swept laser (WSL) utilizing the reconstruction-equivalent-chirp (REC) technique, integrated with 24 DFB lasers, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Additionally, a high-speed FBG sensing system using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) is proposed and demonstrated, achieving stable high-speed sweeping with a wavelength coverage of 50.4 nm and a sweeping frequency of up to 5.85 kHz without mode hopping. The FBG sensing system has a solid-state design without moving parts, enabling real-time, high-speed, and stable monitoring of temperature, pressure, strain, and displacement. Furthermore, the system is cost-effective and anticipated to have diverse industrial applications.

Abstract:A highly efficient dual-wavelength ytterbium-doped fiber linear cavity laser is experimentally demonstrated. Two cascaded fiber Bragg gratings are used as the wavelength selection component. Stable dualwavelength operation and wavelength-switching modes can be realized by appropriately adjusting the polarization state of the intra-cavity light and the reflectivity of the laser cavity. For dual-wavelength operation, the power difference between the two wavelength lasers (1029.7 and 1040.4 nm) can be less than 0.6 dB and the signal-to-amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) ratio is more than 52 dB. The slope efficiency of the laser is as high as 63.9%.

Abstract:A random erbium-doped fiber laser based on fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and single-mode fiber (SMF) was designed and realized experimentally in this study. For the proposed random fiber laser (RFL), the 10 km long SMF was used to generate Rayleigh scattering (RS) emissions, along with FBG to provide randomly distributed feedback in the cavity. In the experiment, the RFL laser threshold is 55 mW, as the pump power is increasingly improved to 175 mW. The RS effect is gradually apparent, and 1531.59nm laser beam was formed. The signal-to-noise ratio was 38.4 dB. The FBG was stretched for sensing applications, and the lasing wavelength was adjusted from 1531.59 to 1533.83 nm when the grating was stretched from 0 to 2000 με.
