Abstract:The preparation process of nano-aluminum hydroxide sol by peptizing aluminum hydroxide precipitate produced via carbonation of sodium aluminate was investigated. The reaction, in which the sodium aluminate solution was dropwise added into abundant sodium bicarbonate solution, was analyzed. The XRD results indicated that the amorphous aluminum hydroxide precipitates transformed into pseudo-boehmite because the precipitates dissolved and recrystallized into pseudo-boehmite crystals during the sol preparation. Furthermore, the increase of absorption at 270 run in the UV spectra indicated the presence of Al(OH)(6)(3-) ion during the sodium aluminate solution with caustic ratio of 1.7 was neutralized to 1.3. Comparing with the absorption spectrum of the structure of six hydroxyl groups around Al atom, it could be concluded that the coordination numbers of Al atom with hydroxyl groups changed from four to six during the decomposition of sodium aluminate solution. Besides, the morphology of particles in the sol was also influenced by surfactants and acids used.
Preparation of Pseudoboehmite with Large Pore Volume and High Specific Surface Area from Sodium Aluminate Solution by Hydrothermal Precipitation Using SB Powder as the Seed

Abstract:Pseudoboehmite with large pore volume and high specific surface area was successfully prepared by hydrothermal precipitation of sodium aluminate solution using SB pseudoboehmite(from Condea,Germany)as the seed,combined with dispersing and washing the precipitate with ethanol.Effects of the composition of the sodium aluminate solution(concentration of Al_2O_3 and molar ratio of Na_2O/Al_2O_3)and the precipitation time on the precipitation yield of Al_2O_3 and Na_2O and physico-chemical properties of the precipitates such as pore volume,specific surface area,and Na content were studied.When the sodium aluminate solution with Al_2O_3 concentration of 100[KG-45x]-[KG-20x]140 g/L and Na_2O/Al_2O_3 molar ratio of 1.30[KG-45x]-[KG-20x]1.45 was used,about 30% precipitation yield of Al_2O_3 was obtained at 125 ℃ with a low seed ratio of 1.0.The obtained pseudoboehmite has a large pore volume of 0.84 cm3/g,a high specific surface area of 213.6 m2/g,and a low Na_2O content less than 0.3% after the third precipitation cycle,and some of its properties are even superior to that of the SB powder.This study provides an preparation route for high value pseudoboehmite from the low-cost sodium aluminate solution.

Abstract:Preparation for low sodium and aluminum-trihydroxide-free pseudo-boehmite through neutralization of NaAlO2 aqueous solution by CO2 was investigated. Through systematic study, the formation of the trihydrate was prevented during neutralization at high concentration of NaAlO2 solution or at higher temperature. NH4NO3 solution or dilute nitric acid was helpful to decrease the sodium content significantly in pseudo - boehmite. The quantity of washing medium consumption was greatly lowered by recycle operation mode. Finally, the effect of drying temperature on the peptizing properties was studied.

Abstract:The hydrothermal process was employed to extract alumina from coal fly ash, resulting in the production of sodium aluminate lixivium. The lixivium exhibited a low concentration of Na 2 O and Al 2 O 3 , which was subjected to carbonation to synthesize pseudo-boehmite in this study. During carbonation, the pH of the lixivium was decreased as CO 2 aeration, resulting in the formation of amorphous aluminum hydroxide, which subsequently transformed into pseudo-boehmite as the solution pH reached 10.0–10.5. Further decrease in solution pH below 9.5 caused the conversion of pseudo-boehmite into dawsonite. Monophase pseudo-boehmite was prepared from the lixivium after carbonation at 80–100 °C for 30–120 min with the final solution pH of 10.0–10.5. The resulting pseudo-boehmite exhibited a fibrous morphology and formed porous aggregations, which displayed a BET specific surface area of 445.48 m 2 /g, a cumulative pore volume of 0.76 cm 3 /g, with the majority of pores falling within the mesopore range of 2–50 nm. The pseudo-boehmite would dehydrate and transform into γ-Al 2 O 3 while maintaining its original morphology after calcination at 450–700 °C, making the product promisingly use as a precursor for preparing mesopore γ-Al 2 O 3 of widespread applications in industrial catalysis.

After calcination at different temperatures, γ-Al2O3 supports with different pore vol-ume and different pore size are prepared at different conditions.

Abstract:Pseudo-boehmite and its derivative gamma-Al2O3 were prepared from polyaluminum chloride by sol-gel method. The samples were characterized by XRD, TEM and N-2, adsorption-desorption techniques. Effects of pH value, preparation temperature and species of pluronic surfactants on the physical properties of pseudo-boehmite were investigated. Results show that alumina hydrate is mainly pseudo-boehmite prepared at pH value near 8.5 and at temperature value near 70 degrees C. With the increase of pluronic surfactants molecular weight, the degree of crystallinity of pseudo-boehmite and its derivative gamma-Al2O3 increases. It is proved that phases of products do not change after adding the pluronic surfactants L64, L65 and F68. The gamma-Al2O3 phases are obtained after 6 hours calcination of the pseudo-boehmite at 500 degrees C. L65 is the most suitable for increasing surface area of gamma-Al2O3, surface area of 231 m(2).g(-1), pore volume of 0.28 cm(3).g(-1) and pore size of 4.52 nm was obtained.

Abstract:Mesoporous alumina with pseudo-boehmite phase was prepared by using the cation-anion double hydrolysis method from mixed aqueous solution of aluminum sulfate and sodium aluminate. The effect of synthetic conditions on the crystal structure and textual properties of pseudo-boehmite was investigated, such as synthetic temperature, pH value and the addition of sodium silicate. With the assistance of characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms (BET) and (27)Al magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR), the relationship between textural properties of the mesoporous alumina samples and their synthetic conditions was discussed. The results displayed that an increase in synthesis temperature promoted the formation of higher crystalline pseudo-boehmite with the increase of its surface area and pore volume. Pure pseudo-boehmite phase could be obtained in the pH value range from 6.0 to 9.0, while bayerite phase occurred when the pH value was over 10.0. The introduction of sodium silicate could greatly improve the pore volume (1.20 cm(3)/g) and surface area (480.2 m(2)/g) of pseudo-boehmite. Interestingly, pure pseudo-boehmite phase was obtained at very high pH value without formation of bayerite phase when sodium silicate was initially added into the aluminum hydroxide colloid.

Abstract:Pseudoboehmite and its derivative were prepared from polyaluminum chloride. EDX, XRD and low temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption were employed to characterize the samples obtained. The effects of alkaline, polyethylene glycol (PEG) surfactant with different molecular weights on phase and surface area of pseudoboehmite were investigated. The results show that NH(3)center dot H(2)O and NaOH can be used as alkaline solution to prepare pure pseudoboehmite. gamma-Al(2)O(3) can be obtained in the range of 450 to 750 degrees C. Surface area and pore volume decrease but the diameter increases with the increase of calcination temperature. With the increase of PEG molecular weight, the surface area and pore volume of gamma-Al(2)O(3) first increases, then decreases. PEG1000 is most suitable for increasing surface area of gamma-Al(2)O(3) and surface area of 396 m(2).g(-1) can be obtained.

Abstract:The conversion mechanism of neutralization of NaAlO 2 solution by CO 2 for preparation of PB (pseudo-boehmite) was discussed. Experimental results proved that there were two parallel reactions during precipitation, which could produce aluminium hydroxide. The two kinds of reaction were the neutralization and the hydrolysis of NaAlO 2 solution. PB could be prepared through neutralization and the product of the hydrolysis of NaAlO 2 solution was aluminium trihydroxide. Besides, if the end pH was too low, side-reaction would occur which produced dawsonite.

Abstract:The method of neutralization of NaAlO2 solution with CO2 (the CO2 method) is one of the most economic techniques for commercial preparation of pseudo boehmite (PB) and γ-Al2O3 support, which produces alumina by using bauxite as raw material because NaAlO2 solution is an intermediate product and CO2 is the exhaust gas in alumina production. Based on the understanding of neutralization reaction mechanism of the CO2 method, loosely packed, fibrous particulate PB is prepared by breaking down the restriction of end pH, and the resulting PB is used for different γ;-Al2O3 supports. By reducing the end pH to < 9 rapidly during neutralization with the CO2 method, PB with loosely packed, fibrous particles was obtained. Using different PB obtained by the CO2 method, γ-Al2O3 supports with pore volume of 0.43-0.74 mL/g and pore peak of 4.9-19.3 nm were prepared at the calcining temperature of 600°-900°C.

Abstract:A facile hydrothermal method was developed to synthesize boehmite nanorods with a length of 50-2000 nm, a diameter of 6-20 nm, and a preferential growth along [100] by treating the Al(OH)(3) gel in acidified sulfate solutions at 240 degrees C. Studies on the hydrothermal treatment of AI(OH)3 gel in sulfate solutions showed that the morphology and the composition of the hydrothermal products were connected with the sulfate concentration and the pH of the hydrothermal solution. The aspect ratio of the boehmite nanorods increased to 300 as the initial H2SO4 concentration increased to 0.043 mol.L-1, whereas boehmite nanorods and (H3O)Al-3(SO4)(2)(OH)(6) cubic particles coexisted in the case of the initial H2SO4 concentration >= 0.054 mol.L-1. Sole boehmite nanoflakes with a diameter of about 50 nm were formed under alkaline conditions (pH 10.5) despite the existence of the sulfate. The chemical and Raman analyses indicated that SO42- in acidified solutions adsorbed on the boehmite surface via H-bonds. On the basis of the above results, the growth of boehmite along the [100] direction was attributed to the selective adsorption of SO42- on the (010) and (001) planes of boehmite.

Abstract:Mesoporous pseudoboehmite with novel pore properties was prepared via the direct precipitation method using aluminum nitrate nonahydrate as the inorganic alumina precursor and different surfactants containing bis (2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate sodium salt (AOT), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB.), and tert-octylphenoxypolyethoxyethanol (Triton X-100) as the structure-directing agents. The as-synthesized mesoporous products were characterized by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron Microscope (TEM) imaging. Pure pseudoboehmite could be obtained when the final pH was between 8 and 10.5, and the presence of different surfactant. micelles played an important role in the Morphology.: and growth of pseudoboehmite. In addition, the pore properties could:he enhanced Significantly by the presence of transition metal ions. Particularly, when nickel nitrate was added to the aluminum nitrate solution at the molar ratio of 0.0040, the specific surface area, the pore volume; and the average pore diameter of pseudoboehmite. reached significantly large values of 381 m(2)/g, 1.18 cm(3)/g and 9 Inn, respectively.

Abstract:The morphology and particle size of boehmite play a decisive role on the application of alumina that derived from it. In this paper, we employed pseudoboehmite that produced from Al2 (SO4)3•18H2O and NH3•H2O at 70 °C, pH 7.5 as precursor to synthesize boehmite, and utilized different seeding when preparing pseudoboehmite and boehmite. To identify the influence of seeding on the microstructure of pseudoboehmite and boehmite, the products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and BET. The results indicate that the pseudoboehmite seeding has a significant influence on the morphology and particle size of pseudoboehmite to which we should pay high attention. However, the boehmite seeding does not play the role of crystal nucleus as expected. The further intrinsic mechanism study is ongoing.

Abstract:As an important intermediate product in new techniques for extracting alumina from coal fly ash, boehmite is obtained by the reaction between ammonium aluminum sulfate and ammonia. The reactive crystallization kinetics of boehmite is investigated using a continuous steady-state method. The Mydlarz and Jones (MJ3) models are in considerable agreement with the experimental results by a non-linear regression method; furthermore, crystal nucleation and growth rate equations are proposed. The results revealed that the suspension density and agitation rates present considerable influence on nucleation. Additionally, high levels of supersaturation are not conducive for crystal growth, and the supersaturation index for crystal growth was small due to its poor water solubility. Moreover, the maximum d 0.5 (average particle size) was 27.968 μ m under the agitation condition and the feed rates of 250 r/s and 0.5 g/10 min. Fast crystal growth speed is associated with the crystal structure’s high AlO 6 -unit and bulk-oxygen content. Our study on crystal nucleation and growth kinetics will be beneficial to the industrial production of boehmite.

Abstract:Alkali lime sintering method was used to prepare aluminum hydroxide from a coal gangue powder collected from the Sandao valley of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous.The weight ratio of Al2O3/SiO2 in the powder increased from 0.86 to 2.21 after treated with alkaline solution.The influences of different conditions,e.g.temperates of 1100,1200,1250 and 1300℃,Na2O/Al2O3 mole ratio from 0.94 to 1.0,and CaO/SiO2 mole ratio from 1.90 to 2.10,on the quality of clinker were investigated.The results indicated that the best quality clinker was obtained in the conditions of 1200℃,Na2O/Al2O ratio is 1.0 and CaO/SiO2 ratio is 2.1,in which the resolution ratio of alumina is up to 94%.By adding boehmite and certain methanol solution,the resolution ratio of alumina from sodium aluminate can be up to 88.9% after 5 hours at the temperature of 30℃.The scanning electron microscopy results show that the obtained product is slice shaped.

Abstract:In this study, adding sugar alcohols to the aluminum-water reaction enables the one-step boehmite synthesis with energy savings and cost reduction. The obtained boehmite formed as stacked layers of embroidery, with particle size decreasing as the sugar alcohol concentration increased. The boehmite obtained in the sugar alcohol system possesses a substantial number of pores, a higher density of active sites, and a lower proportion of AlO6 coordination bonds, exhibiting a specific surface area beyond 100 m2 g−1, greater than the boehmite obtained through the hydrothermal method (3.46 m2 g−1). This study proposes that sugar alcohols undergo a complexation reaction on the aluminum surface, directly forming aluminum oxo complexes (boehmite) without generating an intermediate. Subsequently, boehmite crystal growth preferentially along the (120), (031), and (200) crystal faces. This low-energy and non-polluting method for preparing high-purity (>99.99 %) boehmite with high activity holds significant potential for applications in adsorbents, carriers, and high-performance alumina materials.

Abstract:Boehmite (gamma-AlOOH) powder was first prepared by Sol-Freeze Drying method using cheap AlCl(3.)6H(2)O as raw materials, and then gamma-Al2O3 nanopowder with the average diameter of 6nm and alpha-Al-2 O-3 nanopowder with the mean diameter of 30nn were obtained by the calcination of the above gamma-AlOOH powder at 500 and 1100 degrees C, respectively. The potential-pH diagrams of Al-H2O system at 25 and 90 degrees C were presented, separately. Thermodynamic analysis of the main reactions in the process of thermal decomposition of Al(OH)(3) was also made using Temkin-Schwarzman's method and by means of regression analysis. Investigations of the potential-pH diagrams of Al-H-2 O system and thermodynamic analysis of the thermal decomposition of AI(OH)(3) provide a certain guide for the formation of boehmite sol and the heat treatment of boehmite powder, respectively.

Abstract:γ-Alumina single-crystalline nanorods have been successfully synthesized by thermal decomposition of boehmite precursor which was prepared by solvothermally treating AlCl3 ⁎ 6H2O, NaOH, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate in water and dimethylbenzene mixed solvents. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Our experiments show that the surfactant plays an important role in the morphology and assembly of boehmite. Photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of the boehmite nanorods was also investigated.
