Abstract:The utilization of array micro-holes is becoming increasingly prevalent across a range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, electronics, medical and chemical. Advanced sustainable machining technologies offer distinctive advantages and are pivotal for the sustainable manufacturing of array micro-holes. This paper examines sustainable sustainable machining techniques commonly employed in array micro-hole machining, including electrical discharge machining, laser machining, electrochemical machining and composite machining technologies. The paper commences with an elaboration of the processing principles and characteristics of multiple non-traditional machining techniques. It then proceeds to discuss the research progress and current problems of these technologies. Finally, it presents a summary of the development direction of advanced sustainable manufacturing technologies for array micro-holes.

Abstract:Abrasive machining is a widely-employed finishing process for different materials such as metals,ceramics,glass,rocks etc.to achieve close tolerances and good dimensional accuracy and surface integrity.High speed and super-high speed abrasive machining technologies are the newest-developed advanced machining processes to satisfy super-hardness and difficult-to-machining materials machined.In the present paper,high efficiency abrasive machining technologies relating to ultra high speed grinding,high speed point-grinding,high efficiency deep grinding are analyzed.The efficiency and parameters range of these abrasive machining processes are compared.The key technologies and the newest development and current states of high speed and super-high speed abrasive machining are investigated.It is concluded that high speed and super-high speed abrasive machining are a promising technology in the future abrasive machining.

Abstract:Non-conventional machining processes offer significant advantages over conventional ones, especially in terms of the productivity, cost, and surface integrity of the produced parts due to their higher flexibility. Abrasive waterjet machining, in particular, constitutes an ecologically friendly process with a negligible thermal impact on a workpiece, and it has considerable capabilities for obtaining the desired outcome by regulating some of its numerous parameters. Among these parameters, the abrasive type is particularly important due to its hardness, mesh size, and shape, which lead to considerable deviations on the obtained depth, kerf characteristics, and productivity. Thus, in this work, a comprehensive comparison is conducted on the use of garnet and silicon carbide particles for the slot milling of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy under different conditions. The capabilities of both abrasive materials are evaluated by statistical analysis regarding the depth of penetration, kerf width, kerf taper angle, and material removal rate (MRR), which are obtained under the same process conditions. Finally, a multi-objective optimization based on grey relational analysis (GRA) is performed for several different practical cases. It was found that, although silicon carbide is more efficient in optimizing individual process outputs, the use of a garnet abrasive can lead to considerably better trade-offs between two or more objectives of the machining process.

Abstract:Nowadays, high requirements imposed by mechanical components make it necessary to develop modern production methods. Additive technologies have been dynamically developing in recent years, showing many advantages associated with the fabrication of elements with complex geometries and structures. One of the areas where the potential of additive technologies is exploited is the rapid tooling sector, which is based on the rapid production of tools and components used in various manufacturing methods. Currently, apart from industrial additive fabrication using metal and plastic powders, desktop and low-cost devices for additive manufacturing are gaining more and more importance in the production of functional elements. This paper presents the experimental results obtained from testing the micro-abrasive acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene ABS tools fabricated by fused filament fabrication (FFF) technology and reinforced with SD 28/20 diamond grains uniformly distributed on the working surface of the tools after they were made. Precision surface grinding operations of 41Cr4 alloy steel were carried out on a portable five-axis CNC milling machine using wheels with continuous and serrated working surfaces. The tool with a serrated working surface enabled a more efficient material removal and produced a better surface finish. In particular, a low wear rate of both FFF-printed tools was confirmed after all experiments. Promising results were obtained, showing the potential for a wider industrial application of the tested tools.

The continuing fall in the price of synthetic diamond as production volumes increase provides a strong incentive for tooling companies to reduce the cost of matrix materials and of their manufacturing processes, with an accompanying need for research in these areas. Diamond wires for the cutting of granite and other rock continues to grow in application and provides another focus for materials and technology advances.

Abstract:Abrasive water jet (AWJ) machining process is one of the most sought-after machining technologies for the processing of advanced hard-to-cut materials. It involves parameters, such as abrasive size, shape, density, pressure, standoff distance (SOD), abrasive concentration, feed rate, etc., which govern the quality of machining. It is very crucial to understand the influence of these parameters on the quality attributes. Due to the complex nature of the process that involves complex process parameters, the accurate prediction of response by experimental methods is difficult. In this scenario, numerical methods are helpful in understanding the mechanisms of material removal. Thus, a comprehensive summary of these research trends is needed. In this article, a bibliometric analysis is carried out on scientific publications pertaining to AWJ machining (AWJM) using numerical simulation tools. Citation and bibliographic coupling analyses have been carried out to identify the current research trends, the important journals, authors, institutions, and countries engaged in research on AWJM using numerical simulation. The analysis revealed Shandong University to have the maximum number of affiliated researchers working in this area. The International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture was the leading journal based on CiteScore, SJR rank and SNIP ranks, and the largest volume of articles was published by this journal. The critical topics of research and international collaborative opportunities were identified through the analysis of keywords, Sankey and network diagrams. The present article would be valuable for academia and industry, aiding them in updating their knowledge on the latest developments in AWJM.

Abstract:Abstract Recently, mechanical micro-milling is one of the most promising micro-manufacturing processes for productive and accurate complex-feature generation in various materials including metals, ceramics, polymers and composites. The micro-milling technology is widely adapted already in many high-tech industrial sectors; however, its reliability and predictability require further developments. In this paper, micro-milling related recent results and developments are reviewed and discussed including micro-chip removal and micro-burr formation mechanisms, cutting forces, cutting temperature, vibrations, surface roughness, cutting fluids, workpiece materials, process monitoring, micro-tools and coatings, and process-modelling. Finally, possible future trends and research directions are highlighted in the micro-milling and micro-machining areas.

Abstract:<p>Nowadays, advanced machining techniques are widely used for solving various issues in manufacturing operations that include machining high strength materials, production of complex shaped profiles, better surface features, capable of high levels of precision, miniaturization, reduction of waste and secondary operations and lower production time. Among the various advanced machining techniques, abrasive water jet (AWJ) machining has received more attention from researchers and practicing engineers in manufacturing industries due to its capability of extensive operations and excellent quality of the cutting edge obtained during this process much superior to others, is reported by previous researchers. AWJ process is classified into abrasive water injection jet and abrasive slurry jet on the basis of the different ways of mixing between abrasive and water. This study explores the researches made on Injection type AWJ machining process as it is widely accepted by researchers and Industries for solving various issues. Review articles on AWJ have been collected from the year of 1960–2019. Hence, this study provides a detailed report on AWJ machining process (majority of discussion on metals and their compounds) through demonstration of various studies on subjects that include performance and surface characteristics, hybrid processes, versatile operations, micro machining and medical applications. A literature survey of recent trends and their applications of AWJ process has also been documented. Optimization studies have been discussed with various techniques used in the AWJ machining process. This has been referred to in this paper. In addition, future opportunties in AWJ have been discussed including a demand for requirements in various fields. The entire collection of results are of help in finding the niche applications for manufacturing operations in future. The outcome of this paper would also support present and future researchers in the identification of the significant process parameters, work materials and advanced techniques for getting better results in AWJ machining process.</p>

Abstract:This novel implementation will analyse the cutting performance of hardstone aluminium nitride with regards to roughness of the surface and material erosion in hot abrasive jet machining (HAJM). Forty five sets of tests have been carried out taking into account five machining constraints (compressed air pressure, compressed air velocity, abrasive temperature, abrasive grain size and percentage concentration of hot abrasives). To optimise the model and determine the conditions for maximising the erosion rate and minimising the surface roughness, a particle swarm optimisation (PSO) was used with experimental investigation as well as predictive modelling. The results were validated experimentally, and the results were well-established between test results and PSO forecasts. The nature of the produced target profile was obtained through CFD simulation in HAJMing. In addition, HAJMed surface microstructures were analysed with microscopic images. The results of RSM data have been validated by testing and RSM prediction. In addition, a multi-objective optimisation problem based on the empirical models was used and the multi-objective particle swarm optimisation (PSO) were determined. In AlN ceramic materials, the RSM with PSO determined the optimal machining restriction for an exact HAJMing condition.
Determinant of Dynamics and Interfacial Forces in Ultraprecision Machining of Optical Freeform Surface through Simulation-Based Analysis

Abstract:This study delves into the intricacies of ultraprecision machining, particularly in the context of machining optical freeform surfaces using Diamond Turning Machines (DTMs). It underscores the dynamic relationship between toolpath generation, hydrostatic bearing in DTMs, and the machining process. Central to this research is the innovative introduction of Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) to replace the traditional materials used in designing linear bearings. This strategic substitution aims to dynamically enhance both the accuracy and the quality of the machined optical freeform surfaces. The study employs simulation-based analysis using ADAMS to investigate the interfacial cutting forces at the tooltip and workpiece surface and their impacts on the machining process. Through simulations of STS mode ultraprecision machining, the interfacial cutting forces and their relationship with changes in surface curvatures are examined. The results demonstrate that the use of MMC material leads to a significant reduction in toolpath pressure, highlighting the potential benefits of employing lightweight materials in improving the dynamic performance of the system. Additionally, the analysis of slideway joints reveals the direct influence of interfacial cutting forces on the linear slideways, emphasising the importance of understanding and controlling these forces for achieving higher-precision positioning and motion control. The comparative analysis between steel and MMC materials provides valuable insights into the effects of material properties on the system's dynamic performance. These findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge and suggest a potential shift towards more advanced precision forms, possibly extending to pico-engineering in future systems. Ultimately, this research establishes a new standard in the field, emphasising the importance of system dynamics and interfacial forces in the evolution of precision manufacturing technologies.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to understand the abrasive wear mechanism for producing a nano scale groove on a bulk material through nano machining. A nano indenter equipped with a nano scratching attachment was used for nano machining operation and in situ observation of the machined surfaces. Two different tools (Berkovich and Conical) with the same tip radius (100nm) but different edge geometries were used to machine both Copper and Nickel coatings. It was found that the percentage of elastic recovery was lower for Cu than Ni during this nano machining operations. Hence, the deformation mechanism in nano machining operation was identified as elasto-plastic in nature as opposed to the well established completely plastic mode of conventional machining operations. The pile up volume due to plastic deformation was utilized to distinguish between the ploughing and cutting modes of abrasive wear mechanisms. The results reveal that the ploughing mechanism was dominant for Cu and the cutting mechanism was dominant for Ni machining. Moreover, both mechanisms ploughing and cutting were the dominant modes of abrasive wear using the Berkovich tip compared to the Conical tip for producing a nano scale groove through nano machining.

It has been widely used for processing different types of materials in different fields. This review elaborates on the basic principles and characteristics of abrasive water jet processing, the mechanism of erosion, the simulation of the processing, the influence of process parameters in machining removal, and the optimization of improvements, as well as introduces the current application status, new technology, and future development direction of abrasive water jet technology. This review can provide an important information reference for researchers studying the machining processing of abrasive water jet technology.

Abstract:Although abrasive flow technology is a non-conventional approach to finishing in precision machining, it offers particular advantages when machining micro-hole workpieces. This paper combines theoretical, numerical, and experimental methods to study the use of abrasive flow technology in this way. The nature of the collision of abrasive particles with a workpiece is analyzed to reveal the exact mechanisms involved in removing material using an abrasive flow. The experimental results show the importance of the plowing effect of the abrasive grains on the surface of the workpiece. The results are discussed in relation to the surface morphology of the workpiece before and after the application of the abrasive flow. After abrasive flow machining the surface roughness values were greatly reduced, achieving measures of between 0.418 and 0.285 μm in some areas. It is concluded that abrasive flow technology holds great promise for the production of high-quality workpiece surfaces in precision engineering. The results of this research offer particular insights for the further development of abrasive flow technology.

Abstract:Metal matrix composite (MMC) materials are increasingly used in industrial sectors such as energy, structural, aerospace, and automotive. This is due to the improvement of properties by the addition of reinforcements. Thus, it is possible to obtain properties of higher strength, better rigidity, controlled thermal expansion, and elevated wear resistance. However, due to the extreme hardness achieved during their manufacture, these composites pose a challenge to the conventional machining industry due to the rapid deterioration experienced by cutting tools. This article therefore proposes the use of an unconventional machining method that is becoming increasingly widely used: abrasive water jet cutting. This process is characterized by high production rates, absence of wear, and environmental friendliness, among other advantages. Experimental tests were carried out in order to analyze results that minimize the formation of defects in the machining of metal matrix composite consisting of aluminium matrix with silicon carbide (Al-SiC MMC). To this end, results were analyzed using Scanning Optical and Electron Microscope (SOM/SEM) techniques, the taper angle was calculated, and areas with different surface quality were detected by measuring the roughness.
