Abstract:These are the notes from a course of five lectures at the 2009 Park City Math Institute. The focus is on elliptic curves over function fields over finite fields. In the first three lectures, we explain the main classical results (mainly due to Tate) on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in this context and its connection to the Tate conjecture about divisors on surfaces. This is preceded by a "Lecture 0" on background material. In the remaining two lectures, we discuss more recent developments on elliptic curves of large rank and constructions of explicit points in high rank situations.

Abstract:The past decade has witnessed two important new developments in the study of linear series on algebraic varieties. First, vector bundles have emerged as powerful tools for analyzing linear series on curves and surfaces. More recently, the viewpoints and techniques of higher dimensional geometry have started to play a central role. The purpose of these lectures is to provide a down-to-earth introduction to some of these new ideas and methods. The present notes, written with the assistance of G. Fernandez del Busto, are a considerably expanded version of a course given at the 1993 Regional Geometry Institute on Higher Dimensional Complex Geometry at Park City, Utah. While I hope they may be of interest to any geometers wishing to learn about recent work on linear series, I have particularly attempted to aim the discusion at a novice audience. My hope is that with a little faith and effort, these notes should be accessible to anyone having finished the standard introductory texts in algebraic geometry. The underlying theme of the lectures is the search for higher dimensional generalizations of the most basic facts about linear series on curves. But in an attempt to keep things elementary we work more or less exclusively on surfaces. Thus we end up discussing one central result -- viz. Reider's theorem -- from many points of view. Sticking to the case of surfaces allows one to eliminate many technical complexities, and I hope that parts of these lectures might therefore serve as a useful first introduction to the powerful cohomological techniques (involving $Q$-divisors) of contemporary

Abstract:We establish a connection between the theory of Ulrich sheaves and $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory. For instance, we prove that the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of a morphism between projective varieties, that is relatively oriented by an Ulrich sheaf, is constant on the target even when it is not $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. Further if an embedded projective variety is the support of a symmetric Ulrich sheaf of rank one, the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of all its linear projections can be read off in an explicit way from the free resolution of the Ulrich sheaf. Finally, we construct an Ulrich sheaf on the secant variety of a curve and use this to define an arithmetic version of Viro's encomplexed writhe for curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. This can be considered to be an arithmetic analogue of a link invariant.

Abstract:These lecture notes are based on the second course in a series of lectures at the Spring school "Non-archimedean geometry and Eigenvarieties" in March 2023 in Heidelberg. The objective of the first three courses was to give an introduction to the theory of adic spaces. Building up on the theory of Huber pairs presented in John Bergdall's lecture we explain the construction of adic spaces. We study some important classes of adic spaces such as rigid analytic spaces and formal schemes and show the connections between them. In the course of the lecture we will illustrate the respective concepts with the fundamental examples of the open and closed disc and the affine line.

Abstract:We compute equivariant Euler characteristics of locally free sheaves on curves, thereby generalizing several results of Kani and Nakajima. For instance, we extend Kani's computation of the Galois module structure of the space of global meromorphic differentials which are logarithmic along the ramification locus from the tamely ramified to the weakly ramified case.

Abstract:Let $\Lambda$ be a complete noetherian local ring with finite residue field of characteristic $p$ and $K/\mathbb{Q}_p$ a $p$-adic field. We show that, by deformation of the structure sheaf on the (transversal) prismatic site of a bounded $p$-adic formal scheme $\mathfrak{X}$, the category of prismatic $(\Lambda,F)$-crystals on $\mathfrak{X}$ is equivalent to $\Lambda$-étale local systems on the generic adic fiber of $\mathfrak{X}$ and that the cohomology of $(\Lambda,F)$-crystals recovers the pro-étale cohomology of the corresponding local systems. The proof follows the strategy used in \cite{bhatt2023prismatic} and \cite{marks2023prismatic}. From this we construct an isomorphism between Iwasawa cohomology of a $p$-adic Lie extension of $K$ and prismatic cohomology. Following \cite{wu2021galois}, we then reprove Dee's classical result \cite{article} on the equivalence between families of Galois representations and étale $(\varphi,\Gamma)$-modules.

Brill-Noether loci of pencils with prescribed ramification on moduli of curves and on Severi varieties on $K3$ surfaces

Abstract:Under the assumption that the adjusted Brill-Noether number $\widetilde{\rho}$ is at least $-g$, we prove that the Brill-Noether loci in $\mathcal{M}_{g,n}$ of pointed curves carrying pencils with prescribed ramification at the marked points have a component of the expected codimension with pointed curves having Brill-Noether varieties of pencils of the minimal dimension. As an application, the map from the Hurwitz scheme to $\mathcal{M}_g$ is dominant if $n+\widetilde{\rho} \geq 0$ and generically finite otherwise, settling a variation of a classical problem of Zariski. In the second part of the paper, we study the analogous loci of curves in Severi varieties on $K3$ surfaces, proving existence of curves with non-general behaviour from the point of view of Brill-Noether theory. This extends previous results of Ciliberto and the first named author to the ramified case. We apply these results to study correspondences and cycles on $K3$ surfaces in relation to Beauville-Voisin points and constant cycle curves.

Abstract:We compute Joyce's (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2111.04694" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2111.04694">arXiv:2111.04694</a>) enumerative invariants $[\mathcal{M}^{\mathrm{ss}}_{(r,d)}]_{\mathrm{inv}}$ for semistable rank $r$ degree $d$ coherent sheaves on a complex projective curve. These invariants are a generalization of the fundamental class of the moduli of semistable sheaves. We express the invariants as a regularized sum, which is a way to assign finite values to divergent series, and we obtain explicit expressions for the invariants. From these invariants, one can extract cohomology pairings on the moduli of semistable sheaves. When $r$ and $d$ are coprime, formulae for such pairings were found by Witten and proved by Jeffrey and Kirwan. Our results provide a new point of view on this classical problem, and can be seen as a generalization of this to the case when $r$ and $d$ are not coprime.

Abstract:This is a course of lectures given for students of the Regional Mathematical Center of the Novosibirsk State University from October 20 to November 3, 2017. The course is devoted to some geometric problems of ramified coverings of the Riemann sphere. A special attention is payed to compact surfaces of genus one (complex tori). In the first section we give a short introduction to the theory of elliptic functions. Section 2 is devoted to one-parametric families of holomorphic and meromorphic functions. We recall the role of such families on Loewner's equation in solving some problems of the theory of univalent functions. Further we deduce a system of ODEs expressing dependence of critical points of a family of rational functions from their critical values. This gives an approximate method to find a conformal mapping of the Riemann sphere onto a given simply-connected compact Riemann surface over the sphere. Thereafter a similar problem is solved for elliptic functions uniformizing complex tori over the Riemann sphere. The corresponding system of ODEs also contains a differential equation for the modules of complex tori. In Section 3 we apply complex tori in some problems connected to Pade-Hermit approximations. We study the partition of a 3-sheeted Riemann surface into sheets induced by some abelian integrals (so-called Nattall's partition). In the symmetric case we describe the structure of trajectories of quadratic differentials connected with the abelian integrals.

Abstract:We give a new geometric characterization of the motivic ramification filtration of reciprocity sheaves, by imitating a method used by Abbes and (Takeshi) Saito to study the ramification of torsors under finite étale groups. This new characterization is used to define characteristic forms for reciprocity sheaves. We obtain applications on pseudo-rational singularities and on questions regarding the representability of certain cohomology groups of reciprocity sheaves in the triangulated category of motives with modulus introduced by Kahn-Miyazaki-Saito-Yamazaki.
