Abstract:These notes cover the lectures of the first named author at 2021 IHES Summer School on "Enumerative Geometry, Physics and Representation Theory" with additional details and references. They cover the definition of Khovanov-Rozansky triply graded homology, its basic properties and recent advances, as well as three algebro-geometric models for link homology: braid varieties, Hilbert schemes of singular curves and affine Springer fibers, and Hilbert schemes of points on the plane.

Abstract:This is a survey paper about moduli spaces that have a natural structure of a (possibly incomplete) locally symmetric variety. We outline the Baily-Borel compactification for such varieties and compare it with the compactifications furnished by techniques in algebraic geometry. These differ in general, but we show that a reconciliation is possible by means of a generalization of the Baily-Borel technique for a class of incomplete locally symmetric varieties. Szemberg, held March 23-27, 2009 at the Pedagogical University of Cracow under the sponsorship of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) present a number of open problems on the theory of smooth projective algebraic surfaces, and put into historical context recent work on a range of topics, including Mori dream spaces and the finite generation of the Cox ring, Seshadri constants, and the resurgence of homogeneous ideals and the problem of which ordinary powers of homogeneous ideals contain given symbolic powers of those ideals. Abstract:The past decade has witnessed two important new developments in the study of linear series on algebraic varieties. First, vector bundles have emerged as powerful tools for analyzing linear series on curves and surfaces. More recently, the viewpoints and techniques of higher dimensional geometry have started to play a central role. The purpose of these lectures is to provide a down-to-earth introduction to some of these new ideas and methods. The present notes, written with the assistance of G. Fernandez del Busto, are a considerably expanded version of a course given at the 1993 Regional Geometry Institute on Higher Dimensional Complex Geometry at Park City, Utah. While I hope they may be of interest to any geometers wishing to learn about recent work on linear series, I have particularly attempted to aim the discusion at a novice audience. My hope is that with a little faith and effort, these notes should be accessible to anyone having finished the standard introductory texts in algebraic geometry. The underlying theme of the lectures is the search for higher dimensional generalizations of the most basic facts about linear series on curves. But in an attempt to keep things elementary we work more or less exclusively on surfaces. Thus we end up discussing one central result -- viz. Reider's theorem -- from many points of view. Sticking to the case of surfaces allows one to eliminate many technical complexities, and I hope that parts of these lectures might therefore serve as a useful first introduction to the powerful cohomological techniques (involving $Q$-divisors) of contemporary

Abstract: We develop a moduli theory of algebraic varieties and pairs of non-negative Kodaira dimension. We define stable minimal models and construct their projective coarse moduli spaces under certain natural conditions. This can be applied to a wide range of moduli problems in algebraic geometry.

Abstract:We survey some recent developments at the interface of algebraic geometry, surface topology, and the theory of ordinary differential equations. Motivated by "non-abelian" analogues of standard conjectures on the cohomology of algebraic varieties, we study mapping class group actions on character varieties and their algebro-geometric avatar -- isomonodromy differential equations -- from the point of view of both complex and arithmetic geometry. We then collect some open questions and conjectures on these topics. These notes are an extended version of my talk at the April 2024 Current Developments in Mathematics conference at Harvard.

Abstract:It is often noted that many of the basic concepts of differential geometry, such as the definition of connection, are purely algebraic in nature. Here, we review and extend existing work on fully algebraic formulations of differential geometry which eliminate the need for an underlying manifold. While the literature contains various independent approaches to this, we focus on one particular approach that we argue to be the most natural one based on the definition of \emph{algebraifold}, by which we mean a commutative algebra $\mathcal{A}$ for which the module of derivations of $\mathcal{A}$ is finitely generated projective. Over $\mathbb{R}$ as the base ring, this class of algebras includes the algebra $C^\infty(M)$ of smooth functions on a manifold $M$, and similarly for analytic functions. An importantly different example is the Colombeau algebra of generalized functions on $M$, which makes distributional differential geometry an instance of our formalism. Another instance is a fibred version of smooth differential geometry, since any smooth submersion $M \to N$ makes $C^\infty(M)$ into an algebraifold with $C^\infty(N)$ as the base ring.Over any field $k$ of characteristic zero, examples include the algebra of regular functions on a smooth affine variety as well as any function field.

Abstract:We shall describe a simple generalization of commutative rings. The category GR of such "rings", contains the ordinary commutative rings (fully faithfully), but also the "integers" and "residue field" at a real or complex place of a field ; the "field with one element" (the initial object of GR ); the "arithmetical surface" ( the sum in the category GR of the integers with them self: Z(x)Z ) . We shall show that this geometry "see" the real and complex places of a number field (there is an Ostrowski theorem that the valuation sub-GR of a number field correspond to the finite and infinite primes; there is a compactification of the spectrum of the integers ). One can develop algebraic geometry using GR following Grothendieck paradigm . Quillen's homotopical algebra replaces homological algebra . There is an analogue of Quillen's cotangent bundle - in particular there is a theory of non-additive derivations, with modules of Kahler differentials which satisfy all the usual exact sequences - we compute explicitly the differentials of the integers Z over the initial object F1 . Finally we associate with any topological compact valuation GR a meromorphic function - its "zeta" : for the p-adic integers we get the p-local factor of zeta, for the "real integers" we get the gamma factor.

Abstract:We give scheme-theoretic descriptions of the category of fibre functors on the categories of sheaves associated to the Zariski, Nisnevich, étale, rh, cdh, ldh, eh, qfh, and h topologies on the category of separated schemes of finite type over a separated noetherian base. Combined with a theorem of Deligne on the existence of enough points, this provides an algebro-geometric description of a conservative family of fibre functors on these categories of sheaves. As an example of an application we show that direct image along a closed immersion is exact for all these topologies except qfh. The methods are transportable to other categories of sheaves as well.

Abstract:These are notes of a graduate course on semisimple Lie algebras and Chevalley groups (over arbitrary fields). Standard references for these topics are the lectures notes by Steinberg (1967) and the book by Carter (1972). The aim of this text is to give a self-contained introduction based on Lusztig's recent simplified approach, which is inspired by the general theory of ``canonical'' bases. Many constructions are of a purely combinatorial nature and, hence, can be implemented on a computer. We explicitly incorporate such algorithmic methods in our treatment. This is the first part of a planned book project.
