Abstract:These are notes that accompany a short course given at the School on Algebraic Geometry 1999 at the ICTP, Trieste. A major goal is to outline various approaches to moduli spaces of curves. In the last part I discuss the algebraic classes that naturally live on these spaces; these can be thought of as the characteristic classes for bundles of curves.

Abstract:The purpose of these notes is to give an introduction to Deligne-Mumford stacks and their moduli spaces, with emphasis on the moduli problem for curves. The paper has 4 sections. In section 1 we discuss the general problem of constructing a moduli "space" of curves. In section 2 we give an introduction to Deligne-Mumford stacks and their moduli spaces. In section 3 we return to curves and outline Deligne and Mumford's proof that the stack of stable curves is a smooth and irreducible Deligne-Mumford stack which is proper over Spec Z. In section 4 we explain how to use geometric invariant to construct moduli spaces for quotient stacks. Finally, we briefly outline Gieseker's geometric invariant theory construction of the moduli scheme of projective curves defined over an algebraically closed field. These notes are a slightly revised version of notes which the author has circulated privately for several years, and are based on lectures the author gave at the Weizmann Institute in July 1994. Curvatures of Moduli Space of Curves and Applications

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract: We develop a moduli theory of algebraic varieties and pairs of non-negative Kodaira dimension. We define stable minimal models and construct their projective coarse moduli spaces under certain natural conditions. This can be applied to a wide range of moduli problems in algebraic geometry.

Abstract:This is a survey paper about moduli spaces that have a natural structure of a (possibly incomplete) locally symmetric variety. We outline the Baily-Borel compactification for such varieties and compare it with the compactifications furnished by techniques in algebraic geometry. These differ in general, but we show that a reconciliation is possible by means of a generalization of the Baily-Borel technique for a class of incomplete locally symmetric varieties. Abstract:First, I will quickly recall some of the basic elements of the minimal model program. Then, I concentrate on the interactions between the minimal model program and some moduli problems. In particular, I explain the construction of moduli spaces of varieties of general type via the minimal model program. Abstract. The Hecke symmetry is a salient feature of Shimura varieties. In the more recent past these symmetries have led to the notion of leaves, a global structure on the reduction of modular varieties of PEL type defined by Oort, and conjecturally for all Shimura varieties with good reduction. The Hecke symmetry also led to the notion of canonical coordinates on leaves, generalizing the classical Serre-Tate coordinates. We will discuss some recent works related to the Hecke symmetry : (1) -adic and p-adic monodromy of leaves, and irreducibility of leaves (joint work with F. Oort). One of the methods for showing that the p-adic monodromy is big is inspired by H. Hida. (2) CM lifting modulo Hecke symmetry (joint work with B. Conrad and F. Oort). Abstract. In this lecture we explain how to attach a p-adic representation to a vector bundle with strongly semistable reduction of degree zero on a p-adic curve. We also discuss higher dimensional generalizations. This is a report on joint work with Annette Werner. Abstract. Since the proof of Iwasawa's main conjecture in the classical case (the- orem of Mazur and Wiles), automorphic forms on GL(2) have played an essential role to understand GL(1)-problems. After the breakthrough by A. Wiles ((1)), there has been a substantial progress in the class field theory for GL2. In this talk, open problems in classical Iwasawa theory are discussed from this perspective, based on Galois deformations.
Secular dynamics of the three body problem: application to the upsilon Andromedae planetary system

Abstract:(abbreviated) We use a semi-numerical approach to study the secular behavior of a system composed of a central star and two massive planets in eccentric co-planar orbits. We show that the secular dynamics of this system can be described using only two parameters, the ratios of the semimajor axes and the planetary masses. The main dynamical features of the system are presented in geometrical pictures that allows us to investigate a large domain of the secular phase space of this three-body problem without time-expensive numerical integrations of the equations of motion, and without any restriction on the magnitude of the planetary eccentricities. We show that three different regimes of secular motion with respect to the secular angle $\Delta\varpi$ are possible: they are circulation, oscillation (around 0 and $180^\circ$), and high eccentricity libration in a nonlinear secular resonance. The first two regimes are a continuous extension of the classical linear secular perturbation theory; the last is a new feature, hitherto unknown, in the secular dynamics of the three-body problem.

Abstract:This survey paper is about moduli spaces in algebraic geometry for which a period map gives that space the structure of a (possibly incomplete) locally symmetric variety and about their natural compactifications. Non-linear bi-algebraic curves and surfaces in moduli spaces of Abelian differentials

Abstract:The strata of the moduli spaces of Abelian differentials are non-homogenous spaces carrying natural bi-algebraic structures. Partly inspired by the case of homogenous spaces carrying bi-algebraic structures (such as torii, Abelian varieties and Shimura varieties), Klingler and Lerer recently showed that any bi-algebraic curve in a stratum of the moduli space of Abelian differentials is linear provided that the so-called condition $(\star)$ is fulfilled. In this note, we construct a non-linear bi-algebraic curve, resp. surface, of Abelian differentials of genus $7$, resp. $10$.

Abstract:We describe the invariants of plane quartic curves -- nonhyperelliptic genus 3 curves in their canonical model -- as determined by Dixmier and Ohno, with application to the classification of curves with given structure. In particular, we determine modular equations for the strata in the moduli space $\Me_3$ of plane quartics which have at least seven hyperflexes, and obtain an computational characterization of curves in these strata.

Abstract:It is a classical fact going back to F. Klein that an elliptic curve $E$ over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ is defined by a homogeneous polynomial in $3$ variables with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(j_{E})$, where $j_{E}$ is the $j$-invariant of $E$, and $\mathbb{Q}(j_{E})$ is the field of moduli of $E$. The general definition of field of moduli goes back to T. Matsusaka and G. Shimura. With few exceptions, it coincides with the intersection of the fields where the curve is defined. We prove that every smooth plane curve of degree prime with $6$ is defined by a homogeneous polynomial with coefficients in the field of moduli. Furthermore, we show that most plane curves in arbitrary degree, and more generally most algebraic cycles in $\mathbb{P}^{2}$ with finite automorphism group, descend to a Brauer-Severi surface over the field of moduli.

Abstract:The modular curves serve as excellent objects for testing conjectures in arithmetic geometry. They possess a natural geometric definition in contrast with rather nontrivial structure. On the other hand, they are well-studied from the perspective of number theory. Furthermore, there is a well-developed and powerful analytic technique available. We will use the square of the modular curve as the experimental object to investigate the arithmetic properties of the periods of mixed Hodge structures. There is an additional reason for this study: this square is naturally associated with a family of (Hecke) curves. These curves form components of the Neron-Severi locus, allowing for the interpretation of the square of the moduli curve as the moduli space of split (i.e., the product of two elliptic curves) abelian surfaces.

Their aim is to explain and prove the modular symbols algorithm in as elementary and as explicit terms as possible, and to enable the devoted student to implement it over any ring (such that a sufficient linear algebra theory is available in the chosen computer algebra system). Abstract:For any almost-simple group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero, we describe the automorphism group of the moduli space of semistable $G$-bundles over a connected smooth projective curve $C$ of genus at least $4$. The result is achieved by studying the singular fibers of the Hitchin fibration. As a byproduct, we provide a description of the irreducible components of two natural closed subsets in the Hitchin basis: the divisor of singular cameral curves and the divisor of singular Hitchin fibers.
