Abstract:In these notes, we introduce various approaches (GIT, Hodge theory, and KSBA) to constructing and compactifying moduli spaces. We then discuss the pros and cons for each approach, as well as some connections between them.

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:In this survey we provide an overview of some recent developments in the construction of moduli spaces using stack-theoretic techniques. We will also explain the analogue of Harder-Narasimhan stratifications for general stacks, known as $\Theta$-stratifications. As an application of the ideas exposed here, we address the moduli problem of principal bundles over higher dimensional projective varieties, as well as its different compactifications by the so-called principal $\rho$-sheaves. We construct a stratification by instability types whose lower strata admits a proper good moduli space of ``Gieseker semistable" objects and a new Gieseker-type Harder-Narasimhan filtration for these objects. Detailed proofs of the latter results will appear elsewhere.

Abstract:We exhibit the first non-trivial concrete examples of Gromov-Hausdorff compactifications of moduli spaces of K\"ahler-Einstein Fano manifolds in all complex dimensions bigger than two (Fano K-moduli spaces). We also discuss potential applications to explicit study of moduli spaces of K-stable Fano manifolds with large anti-canonical volume. Our arguments are based on recent progress about the geometry of metric tangent cones and on related ideas about the algebro-geometric study of singularities of K-stable Fano varieties.

Abstract:It is a folklore theorem that the Kuranishi slice method can be used to construct the moduli space of semistable Higgs bundles on a closed Riemann surface as a complex space. The purpose of this paper is to provide a proof in detail. We also give a direct proof that the moduli space is locally modeled on an affine GIT quotient of a quadratic cone by a complex reductive group.

Abstract:The moduli space of complex cubic surfaces has three different, but isomorphic, compact realizations: as a GIT quotient, as a Baily--Borel compactification of a ball quotient, and as a compactified $K$-moduli space. From all three perspectives, there is a unique boundary point corresponding to non-stable surfaces. From the GIT point of view, to deal with this point, it is natural to consider the Kirwan blowup, while from the ball quotient point of view it is natural to consider the toroidal compactification. Both these spaces have the same cohomology and and it is therefore natural to ask whether they are isomorphic. Here we show that this is in fact not the case. Indeed, we show the more refined statement that both spaces are equivalent in the Grothendieck ring, but not $K$-equivalent. Along the way, we establish a number of results and techniques for dealing with singularities and canonical classes of Kirwan blowups and toroidal compactifications of ball quotients.

Abstract:We construct a compactification of the moduli spaces of abelian differentials on Riemann surfaces with prescribed zeroes and poles. This compactification, called the moduli space of multi-scale differentials, is a complex orbifold with normal crossing boundary. Locally, our compactification can be described as the normalization of an explicit blowup of the incidence variety compactification, which was defined in [BCGGM18] as the closure of the stratum of abelian differentials in the closure of the Hodge bundle. We also define families of projectivized multi-scale differentials, which gives a proper Deligne-Mumford stack, and our compactification is the orbifold corresponding to it. Moreover, we perform a real oriented blowup of the unprojectivized moduli space of multi-scale differentials such that the $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb R)$-action in the interior of the moduli space extends continuously to the boundary.

To do so, we fix certain invariants; these choices are encoded in the notion of Q {\mathbb {Q}} -stable pair . We show that these choices give a proper moduli space with projective coarse moduli space and they prevent some pathologies of the moduli space of stable pairs when the coefficients are smaller than 1 2 \frac {1}{2} . Lastly, we apply this machinery to provide an alternative proof of the projectivity of the moduli space of stable pairs.

Compactifications of the Eisenstein ancestral Deligne-Mostow variety

Abstract:All arithmetic non-compact ball quotients by Deligne-Mostow's unitary monodromy group arise as sub-ball quotients of either of two spaces called ancestral cases, corresponding to Gaussian or Eisenstein Hermitian forms respectively. In our previous paper, we investigated the compactifications of the Gaussian Deligne-Mostow variety. Here we work on the remaining case, namely the ring of Eisenstein integers, which is related to the moduli space of unordered 12 points on $\mathbb P^1$. In particular, we show that Kirwan's partial resolution of the moduli space is not a semi-toroidal compactification and Deligne-Mostow's period map does not lift to the unique toroidal compactification. We give two interpretations of these phenomena in terms of the log minimal model program and automorphic forms. As an application, we prove that the above two compactifications are not (stacky) derived equivalent, as the $DK$-conjecture predicts. Furthermore, we construct an automorphic form on the moduli space of non-hyperelliptic curves of genus 4, which is isogenous to the Eisenstein Deligne-Mostow variety, giving another intrinsic proof, independent of lattice embeddings, of a result by Casalaina-Martin, Jensen and Laza.

Abstract:First, I will quickly recall some of the basic elements of the minimal model program. Then, I concentrate on the interactions between the minimal model program and some moduli problems. In particular, I explain the construction of moduli spaces of varieties of general type via the minimal model program. Abstract. The Hecke symmetry is a salient feature of Shimura varieties. In the more recent past these symmetries have led to the notion of leaves, a global structure on the reduction of modular varieties of PEL type defined by Oort, and conjecturally for all Shimura varieties with good reduction. The Hecke symmetry also led to the notion of canonical coordinates on leaves, generalizing the classical Serre-Tate coordinates. We will discuss some recent works related to the Hecke symmetry : (1) -adic and p-adic monodromy of leaves, and irreducibility of leaves (joint work with F. Oort). One of the methods for showing that the p-adic monodromy is big is inspired by H. Hida. (2) CM lifting modulo Hecke symmetry (joint work with B. Conrad and F. Oort). Abstract. In this lecture we explain how to attach a p-adic representation to a vector bundle with strongly semistable reduction of degree zero on a p-adic curve. We also discuss higher dimensional generalizations. This is a report on joint work with Annette Werner. Abstract. Since the proof of Iwasawa's main conjecture in the classical case (the- orem of Mazur and Wiles), automorphic forms on GL(2) have played an essential role to understand GL(1)-problems. After the breakthrough by A. Wiles ((1)), there has been a substantial progress in the class field theory for GL2. In this talk, open problems in classical Iwasawa theory are discussed from this perspective, based on Galois deformations.
A combinatorial model for the moduli of bordered Riemann surfaces and a compactification

Abstract:We construct a combinatorial moduli space closely related to the KSV-compactification of the moduli space of bordered marked Riemann surfaces. The open part arises from symmetric metric ribbon graphs. The compactification is obtained by considering sequences of non contractible subgraphs. This leads to a partial real blow-up of rational cells that together form a compact orbi-cell space. For genus zero the constructed space gives an orbi-cell decomposition of the corresponding analytic moduli space decorated by real numbers and a compactification of this space. In higher genus the relation is more involved, as we briefly explain. The spaces we construct are of interest in their own right as they are constructed directly from an interesting class of graphs.

Abstract:We determine the maximal dimension of compact subvarieties of $\mathcal{A}_g$, the moduli space of complex principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, and the maximal dimension of a compact subvariety through a very general point of $\mathcal{A}_g$. This also allows us to draw some conclusions for compact subvarieties of the moduli space of complex curves of compact type.
