Abstract:We determine the maximal dimension of compact subvarieties of $\mathcal{A}_g$, the moduli space of complex principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$, and the maximal dimension of a compact subvariety through a very general point of $\mathcal{A}_g$. This also allows us to draw some conclusions for compact subvarieties of the moduli space of complex curves of compact type.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is to determine the maximum dimension of compact sub - varieties in the moduli space \(A_g\) of principally polarized abelian varieties over the complex number field, as well as the maximum dimension of compact sub - varieties passing through very general points of \(A_g\). Specifically, the paper solves the following two core problems: 1. **The maximum dimension of compact sub - varieties passing through very general points**: - The paper proves that for a very general point \(p\) in \(A_g\), the maximum dimension of compact sub - varieties containing \(p\) is equal to \(g - 1\), that is, \(\text{mdim}_c^{\text{gen}}(A_g)=g - 1\). 2. **The maximum dimension of all compact sub - varieties**: - The paper determines the maximum dimension of all compact sub - varieties in \(A_g\) and gives a specific formula: \[ \text{mdim}_c(A_g)= \begin{cases} g - 1 &\text{if } g < 16\\ \left\lfloor\frac{g^2}{16}\right\rfloor &\text{if } g\geq16 \text{ and even}\\ \left\lfloor\frac{(g - 1)^2}{16}\right\rfloor &\text{if } g\geq17 \text{ and odd} \end{cases} \] In addition, the paper also explores the influence of these results on the moduli space \(M_{ct}^g\) of curves of compact type over the complex number field and draws corresponding conclusions. ### Main contributions - **Theorem A**: For a very general point \(p\) in \(A_g\), the maximum dimension of compact sub - varieties containing \(p\) is equal to \(g - 1\). - **Theorem B**: Determines the maximum dimension of all compact sub - varieties in \(A_g\) and gives a specific formula. - **Corollary C**: For the moduli space \(M_{ct}^g\) of curves of compact type, the dimension of the maximum compact sub - variety is \(\left\lfloor\frac{3g}{2}\right\rfloor - 2\) for \(2\leq g\leq23\); and the dimension of the maximum compact sub - variety in \(J(M_{ct}^g)\) does not exceed \(g - 1\) for \(2\leq g\leq15\). ### Method overview - **Proof of Theorem A**: Assume that there exists a compact sub - variety \(X\subset A_g\) with dimension at least \(g\). Through intersection analysis with the product \([E]\times A_{g - 1}\) of a fixed elliptic curve \(E\), using the results of the Ax - Schanuel conjecture, it is proved that the dimension of \(X\) must be less than or equal to \(g - 1\). - **Proof of Theorem B**: First, prove that for any non - compact Shimura sub - variety \(S\subseteq A_g\), the dimension of the Hodge - generic compact sub - variety \(X'\) does not exceed \(g' - 1\). Then, by analyzing the structure of the compact sub - variety \(X\subset A_g\), it is proved that if \(X\) is not Hodge - generic, then it must be contained in some compact Shimura sub - variety or in the product of some Shimura sub - varieties. Finally, by studying the maximum dimension of compact Shimura sub - varieties, the proof of Theorem B is completed. These results not only deepen the understanding of the \(A_g\) moduli space, but also provide an important theoretical basis for further research in related fields.
